INTRODUCTION
Textbooks are as universal as formal schooling and almost as old. They have been used
to aid teaching and in some cases, to be the teacher for centuries. Textbooks are not just
teaching and learning object but are political documents that hold content that reflects
the vision of a specific group. A textbook or course book is a manual of instruction in
any branch of study. Textbooks are produced according to the demands of educational
institutions. A textbook is written according to the syllabus and give the outline of the
course. Therefore it helps the teacher to decide about the limits and depth of the content
to be presented to the students while teaching.
The mathematics text books is an important source for learning mathematics it plays a
key role in effective teaching and learning. A textbook should stimulate reflective
thinking and develop problem-solving ability among students. The text books should
present real learning situations, which are challenging and interesting for the students
and should not render itself as a means of rote learning. Text books and teachers guide
occupy a unique place in the teaching learning process. Text books are indispensable
part of primary and secondary education. The textbooks are a teaching instrument. It is
not only a source of information, but a source of study, a set of unit plans and learning
guide. It helps to revive and reinforce the language material already taught. In the
absence of any other instructional material, the text book becomes a potent tool in the

hand of a teacher to teach the skill of a language and the more so of a foreign language.
THE MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOK
The mathematics textbooks is another important source of learning Mathematics and it
plays a key role in effective teaching and learning. Therefore it is important that these
textbooks do not merely supply information and facts, but also enables the student to
understand and appreciate concepts and principles and their relevance in our day to day
life. A text books should stimulate effective thinking and develop problem- solving
ability among students .The textbooks should present real learning situations which are
challenging and interesting for the students and should not render itself as a means of
role learning .Thus textbooks should enrich the quantity of teaching and learning
process.

NEED FOR A GOOD TEXTBOOK IN MATHEMATICS
A mathematics textbook is very useful for a teacher in the following ways.
A textbook provides insight to the teacher in planning the lesson, in selecting the
problems to be worked out, the methods of teaching to be adopted and the teaching
aids to be used. A textbook is written by experienced teachers of mathematics. By
using textbooks, a teacher of mathematics, specially a beginner, can avail the

experience and expertise of the authors. The logical and psychological sequence
followed in a textbook helps the teacher in presenting the subject matter in an orderly
and systematic sequence. A good textbook presents a variety of worked out examples
on each topic. This helps the teacher in getting acquainted with different types of
problems and the methods to solve them. This gives him more self- confidence while
teaching. The well- graded exercises provided after every topic in the textbook help in
assigning suitable homework and assignments to the students to suit their intellectual
capacity. A textbook saves a lot of time for the teacher as he need not spend time to
prepare problems and the solutions as they are readily available in the textbooks. A
mathematics textbook provides the teacher with the basic information considered
essential in attaining the objectives of mathematics education and this helps the teacher
to plan appropriate learning experiences.
A textbook is an important aid for learning mathematics. It is useful for the students in
the following ways:
The textbooks helps the pupils to relate, what they are learning, to life. It helps to foster
the right study attitude among the students since the textbook presents definite and
concrete details in a scientific and intensive manner which could arouse the students’
interest and curiosity. The textbooks provides important source of materials for
reviewing and recapitulating the lessons taught in the class. It places within the reach
of the pupil the theoretical development, worked out with much thought and a wide
view of the bearings of the subject. This helps in meaningful learning. The textbook

helps in pre- preparation of the lesson and gets the student acquainted with lessons
to be taught. It provides adequate materials for drill and practice and thus help in fixing
the mathematical principles and formulae in the minds of the students. It saves time
and labour of the students as they need not copy the illustrative problems, exercise
problems and homework problems. It encourages self- study and independent work
among the students. Textbooks help in clearing the doubts and misunderstanding
relating to mathematical concepts, formulae and principles. It also helps correcting
the mistakes that occur while copying the formulae and problems from the blackboard.
New learning activities such as individual projects, laboratory experiments and
demonstrations suggested in the textbook can be carried out the activity at his own rate
of comprehension. The textbook helps in the extensive study of the subject as it
presents different problems and various approaches to problem – solving.

QUALITIES OF MATHEMATICS TEXT BOOKS
Textbook is a very useful device helpful in teaching learning process. Textbook is a
economical device as it contains the intellectual deposit of specific experiences that
have been developed into generalizations. A good book is the precious life, blood of a
master spirit. Mathematics textbook is an instructional asset that has a valuable place in
the modern class room and in the scientific teachings of mathematics.
The important qualities of good mathematics textbook are as follows.
9.
9
A mathematics textbook should be written accordance with the aims and objectives
of teaching the subject in that particular class.
It should be well illustrated.
There should be diagrams and figures wherever needed.
The textbook should be written in simple and understandable language.
It should be free from mistakes.
It should be written within the group of the children.
It should provide sufficient materials to motivate the students to solve problem.
The students should get adequate opportunity of learning through initiative and
independent efforts.
The problems should relative to the real life needs and physical and social
environment of the learners.
10.
10
It should faster the right attitude towards self study and self reliance among pupils
and it should be done by promoting project works, field works and laboratory
works.
It should be done by promoting project works, field work and laboratory works.
It should promote the use of analytic, synthetic, inductive-deductive, problem-
solving and heuristic approaches to teaching
11.
11
The content should be up- to-date.
The exercises should aim of all levels of students. It should be challenging for
intelligent students and should give opportunity for average or below average
students also.
It should satisfy individual difference in students and should meet the varying
abilities, interest and attitudes.
12.
12
It should promote logical and psychological arrangement of contents.
For many mathematics teachers, the text book is their primary
guide to implementing the curriculum. Mathematics textbooks have three basic
propositions. First good textbooks can play a central role in improving
mathematics education for all students. Secondly the quality of mathematics
textbook should be judged mainly on their effectiveness in helping students to
achieve important mathematics learning goals for which there is a broad national
consensus; and third an in-depth analyses of much more than a textbooks content
coverage would be required to evaluate whether there is potential for students
actually learning the desired the desired subject matter.
Though the mathematics textbook is an indispensable tool for both the
teacher and the pupil, a teacher has to use certain discrimination and take

13
precautions while using it “Few tools have been so misused as textbooks in
teaching.” Many teachers follow them blindly. But a good resourceful teacher
of mathematics will always seek ways and means to adapt the material, the
problems and exercises given in the textbook to suit the previous knowledge,
level of achievement, power of comprehension and assimilation, and the interest
and attitude of his students. A textbook is not an end in itself but it is a means to
an end. The teacher can use it as a teaching aid to supplement the classroom
teaching and not as a substitute for teaching. A teacher should supplement the
classroom teaching with explanation, illustrations through further researches.

CONCLUSION
Inspire of the good qualities of a textbook, mastering in math is possible for
whenever needed. And they can very well master in math if they get the right
home help at the right time. Every teacher of mathematics uses a textbook. An
average teacher uses it as “his stock in hand “but a good teacher uses it as “a
helper”. The text book that is considered “as store house of basis information”
can facilitate a teacher to do wonder in his subject .The textbook should not be
teaching. The effective use of the textbooks lies in intelligently and carefully adapting
them to the needs of the students. The greater the capacity, knowledge and professional
training and experience of the teacher, the less he needs to depend on the textbook.
Nevertheless, however good a teacher may be, he does not have the time to work
entirely without a textbook. While using the textbook, the teacher should students
to think for themselves thereby enabling them to avoid rote memorization. The
students can copy the exercise problems and homework problem from the textbook
and refer to illustrative examples and theoretical definition and principles for better
understanding and clarification. A textbook can be a good reference book both for the
teacher and the students and if used in a proper way, textbook would definitely prove
quite useful and helpful to the teachers and students.
