In the first year of North Carolina's 1:1 Learning Initiative, which provided laptops to students and teachers in 8 schools, the schools made progress implementing critical components of an effective 1:1 computing environment. These included providing teachers with professional development, establishing necessary infrastructure, policies and staff, and engaging parents. However, implementation timelines differed between the traditional high school, which was better prepared, and Early College High Schools, which faced more challenges preparing within a compressed timeline. Lessons learned indicate the importance of extensive preparation and groundwork before distributing laptops to ensure successful integration of technology to support teaching and learning.
