This document discusses one health approaches to livestock health and pandemics. It identifies seven drivers of zoonotic disease emergence including increased demand for animal protein and unsustainable agricultural intensification. One health is defined as an integrated approach to balancing human, animal, and ecosystem health. It discusses initiatives at ILRI focused on one health, as well as principles of ecohealth like systems thinking. The document advocates for joint surveillance, early detection, and timely responses to diseases in animals to reduce impacts on humans. It proposes mapping disease drivers and intervening in ecosystems and animal populations to improve human health.
