Human-centered	Research	Question
How	can	we	augment	an	individual’s
ability	to	make	informed	choices	and
participate	in	an	emerging	biomedical
knowledge	ecosystem?
Some	Key	Issues
• Tip	of	the	Iceberg
• Complexity
• Silos
• Unconnected	Dots
• Inexperience
• Trust

AI	Alone	Will	Not	Solve	Our	Problems
• The	world	is	complex,	we	need	all	the	cognitive	capacity	we	can	get
• Algorithms	can	harness	an	expanding	mass	of	information	to	govern
and	inform	our	choices	but	are	often	developed	in	a	nontransparent
manner	that	obstructs	the	ability	to	identify	biases	or	evaluate
appropriate	use
• Algorithms	are	limited	to	explicit	knowledge,	miss	deeper
sensemaking
Towards	a	Collaborative	Solution	Space
• We	need	algorithms	that	augment	collective	sensemaking,	working
with	humans
• Collective	sensemaking requires	a	journey	of	impedance	matching	of	framings
(which	are	silo-like)
• Ditto	for	connecting	dots	which	may	reside	in	different	contexts	and	framings
• Collectivities	include	stakeholders,	and	thus	emoto-cognitive	journeys
• There	is	a	need	to	both	open	the	doors	and	to	create	new	platforms
for	connection,	understanding,	and	shared	wisdom-creation.
