The document is a statement of intent for two media products - magazine covers and a website - on current affairs topics. It discusses using theoretical frameworks like representation and audience to communicate meaning. For the magazines, it will feature a male model wearing a mask on the Covid magazine and a female American model on the US election magazine. Pricing, fonts, colors, and layouts are chosen to appeal to a young audience and match the style of similar magazines. For the website, content and design elements like drop-down menus, hyperlinks, and consistent use of red and blue will also target and inform a young audience. User feedback supported consistency across the magazine and website through shared design elements.

Statement of Intent
OLIVIA FINNIGAN
For my magazine front covers, I am going to incorporate a female in one magazine and a male in another
magazine to represent two different social groups. I have chosen to represent a female in my US election
magazine and a male in my Covid magazine to present seriousness and informative content. In my Covid
magazine,my model will wear a mask to conventionally convey the current social climate of Covid-19. My
magazines will be £2.50 each as I believe that this is a reasonable price for a young audience who are
mostly students. Furthermore, the female model i have chosen to include in the US election magazine is
American, which indicates that she would have an interest in the US election and US news. I have also
chosen for my models to be ages 16-25 to target a young audience and to hopefully to encourage
younger people to read current affair magazines. I will also refer to content in my skyline and contents
page that will target a younger audience. For example, entertainment, arts and books and education will
certainly attract a young adult audience. Furthermore , my magazine will be produced and distributed by
Dennis Publishing and my magazine links to other magazines produced by Dennis as majority of them
are current affair magazines. Furthermore, I have also decided to use a serif font type for majority of my
texts which most Dennis products also do. Some of the products also include skylines which I have been
inspired to include in my magazine front covers. Additionally, the serif font types that I intent to use
portray a sense of traditionalism and seriousness. I also intent to use the colours blue, white and red
across my media products to symbolise the Union flag to imply that my magazine is a British magazine. I
also intend to take mid shots to emphasise both the model and the surroundings. It is important to have
an environment portrayed in my image so that text does not blend in. I am also planning on only having a
main cover line and a subtitle to create a balanced layout and then to have further information and
content in the skyline at the top of my magazine. In my US election magazine, I am thinking of having a
poster in blue to represent the Democratic party in support for Biden. To conclude, I created an online
survey where relatives and friends completed in regard to my magazine. More than half said they liked a
magazine with a skyline and 75% said that Covid-19 and the US election are good topics to depict in my
main front covers to interest a mainstream, young audience.

On the other hand, for my website i also intend to target a young audience in an educating and
informative way to further follow the idea of current affairs. I wil do this by using targeting content such
as education, jobs and Covid-19 which can appeal to a young audience as they can relate to the content. I
am also going to make my website easy to use using drop down menus to create an organised and
logical website. I am planning on taking photos of people to represent lockdown and Covid-19 in my
magazine so I will get the models to wear protective gloves or a mask to create a counter typical
representation of a person in our current political and social climate. Furthermore, The Week website is a
product produced by Dennis publishing and their website includes a drop-down menu, homepage,
magazine archives, podcast and search menu which I will include in my website to produce a successful
product. I also intend to create hyperlinks and hover boxes so that my audience can easily read more
content and information, directing them to the correct page. Additionally, to create a consistent house
style between my magazine and website, I am going to consistently use red or blue boxes around
subtitles and headings. For example, in my contents page the headings will be highlighted in a red box,
and I will follow this style in my website on my homepage and magazine archive menu. On my images i
will also create hover boxes to directly take the user to the specific page to read more content, and I will
again create this text when you hover other an image in a blue box to follow the geometric pattern and
house style. I am also going to use red and blue across my contents pages and website to intensify the
house style. in my headings I will use capitalised sans serif font type to make the headings easy to find in
both my contents page and website. I will also use lines in my website to separate certain images and
content to create a more organised and logical layout. To conclude, I created an online survey where
relatives and friends completed in regard to my website. Nearly 100% of people said they thought that
using red and blue highlighted boxes across my magazine and website was a great idea to show
consistency throughout my work. Also, some people also said they would like to see more menu's about
current trending topics such as Coronavirus, climate change and Brexit which I think I will now create in
my website.

To create an appropriate and consistent brand style, I am going to mainly use serif font types and a red,
blue and white colour scheme across my magazine and website. I have chosen serif font types to convey
traditionalism, seriousness and sophistication which reflects current affairs and news. I am also going to
follow a geometric design across my products. For example, I am going to create a rectangular coloured
skyline across my front pages, and then across my content pages and website, my headings will be
highlighted in a red box, in capitalised sans serif font type to further emphasise the geometric pattern. My
images across my contents page and website will also all be in a square format to again follow a
geometric pattern to create house style.
