Of Mice And Men Critical Essay
Writing a critical essay on the topic of "Of Mice and Men" can present both challenges and
opportunities. On one hand, the novel provides a rich tapestry of themes, characters, and social
commentary, offering a plethora of material for analysis. On the other hand, the popularity and
scholarly attention given to this work mean that crafting a unique and insightful essay requires a
deep understanding of the text and the ability to offer fresh perspectives.
One of the difficulties lies in striking a balance between summarizing the plot and delving into
critical analysis. It's crucial to avoid mere retelling and focus on interpreting the events,
characters, and symbolism within the context of the novel's broader themes. The challenge is to
go beyond surface-level observations and uncover the nuances that make the work a timeless
piece of literature.
Moreover, expressing a coherent and well-structured argument is essential. Connecting ideas
seamlessly and providing evidence to support one's interpretations can be demanding, requiring a
thorough understanding of literary devices, historical context, and the author's intentions. The
task also involves navigating the complexities of social issues presented in the novel, such as the
American Dream, loneliness, and the harsh realities of the Great Depression.
Additionally, maintaining an original voice and avoiding clichГ©s or overused analyses is
crucial. Given the extensive academic discourse surrounding "Of Mice and Men," finding a
unique perspective can be challenging but is essential for producing a standout essay.
In conclusion, crafting a critical essay on "Of Mice and Men" demands a combination of literary
insight, analytical skill, and the ability to synthesize information. While it may be challenging,
the process offers a rewarding opportunity to engage deeply with a classic work of literature and
contribute to the ongoing conversation about its significance.

Social Orientation And Social Mobility
Before people started to define each other by their social classes, there were other
forms of stratification. For example the social position of a person was fixed by
law, custom or inherited status. These positions were reinforced by a set of norms
that controlled the relationship between the members of each group. These groups
were seen to be closed as there was no room for social mobility, they were
predetermined. This soon changed due to industrialisation and became more open ,
the newer system was then characterised by competition and a higher chance of
social mobility. A social position of a person was changed from being fixed by the
law to class, to make distinctions between the groups it was focused on property and
economic status. Social mobility would be achieved through education, for example
a person could receive a promotion at work, in which gaining more money, this
would then mean that you could go up a social class. (Childs, 2006 PAGE
NUMBER) In 2006 there was a call for a classless society which would mean that
everyone would have the same chances and access to higher education would remove
traditional class barriers, giving better opportunities to everyone.
There have been three explanations for the persistence of social inequalities and these
are the functionalist model, the libertarian model and egalitarian model.
The functionalist perspective has its origins in the works of Emilie Durkheim, the
model argues that social inequality is an essential
Issue Reparation Essay
The issues reparations bring are multifaceted and complex, ranging from how
reparations will be paid to dealing with varying public responses. A thorough
investigation is required to fully identify the problems and provide any solutions. The
issue of reparations is not singular to the current debates in the US. Both in other
countries and in the US before, some semblance of reparations have transpired.
After the Second World War, both the United States and Canada enacted legislation
for reparations for the interned Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians (Wood).
Canada s laws focused on rebuilding the affected communities, while the USA
focused on reconciliation and education to hopefully prevent a repetition of Executive
Order 9066. Canada created the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation which then

40 (Coates). The bill, which was re introduced every session of congress since 1989,
would initiate a four step plan towards reparations (Conyers). The injustice and
inhumanity of slavery would be acknowledged, a commission would be established
to research the effects of slavery economically and socially, then the commission
would look into the effects of those forces on current day African Americans, as
well as recommend appropriate remedies to Congress based on this research. This
four tiered plan would be capable of implementing reparations after studious
research, backed by the government and therefore the people. However, this bill
has never made it past this early stage, despite the 28 years put into making it an
accessible debate topic. Even outside of politics the issue isn t widely debated or
discussed. How has such a well thought out plan not been given any recognition or
The Endless Steppe Essay
Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.
(Johann von Goethe) The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig is a novel about a
family s determination to survive. In the novel it tells of how determination, the
human ability to adopt, and happiness can hold a family together and help them
even preserver over all odds. In addition, The Endless Steppe tells of Reisa, Ryia,
and Esther tales of how they overcame these ordeals and survived in Siberia in their
own way. The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find
happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this
in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced

The second person that illustrated the theme of the book was Esther s mother
Raya. Raya showed this by always keeping a positive attitude, which raises the
spirits around her. For instance, in the novel her husband went off to war, his
entire battalion was wiped out and everyone had given up hope of him returning
except for her. She kept saying, Be sure to get some farmer s cheese, the kind he
adores. Her positive attitude paid off in the end after everyone thought she was
grief ridden she proved them wrong when he returned. In addition, her positive
attitude did pay off again when he husband was thought to be lost in a when he did
not return for work. Everyone was starting to be worried and lose hope but she
continued to hope and believe and tell the others to and he returned again. That is
how Raya illustrated the theme of the book by maintaining her positive attitude and
encouraging others around her with it. The third person that illustrated the theme of
the book was Esther. Esther showed the theme of the book by the ability to accept
change and her love for her family, which held them together. For instance, when she
was forced for her home on the train she was scared and she did not know what the
future held for her but she pursued on. She even did not even complain in situations
that other people would. In addition, she also had to endure not having her own
space, new roommates, even different schools, and making new friend. However,

Banning Alcohol From Mainstream Consumption
Let s travel back in time, for a second, to the 1840 s. Hundreds upon thousands of
Americans flocked to the western half of the country, fleeing their homes and
risking their very lives for a chance to strike it rich. Some were triumphant, others
failed, and everyone learned a little something along the way... Now, fast forward a
few decades to the twentieth century. The United States government just enacted an
amendment into the Constitution, banning alcohol from mainstream
consumption. A collective of citizens grew irate and resisted, beginning a
movement that would effect the country for years to come. So what do the Gold
Rush and Prohibition have to do with the Internet? Well, they re essentially what
the Internet has been like for me. As both a creator and consumer, cyberspace has
turned making and viewing art into both a prospect and, in some instances, a
protest. Five, even ten years ago, nobody could have imagined the kind of force
the digital age would usher. As information was exchanged, people soon figured
out that they had a virtual library at their fingertips. I don t even have to think
about leaving the house to find out which watercolor brand was the best money
could buy a quick Google search could yield plenty of answers to that question.
(About 1,040,000 results, to be exact!) I see myself a miner, and the Internet gives
me the tools I need to create my works. It s no coincidence creators have made it this
way. I could conduct research for a concept
Martin Luther King Principles Essay
Principles prompt activity, impel motion, direct choices. A principled person
always has a place to stand, knows where he or she is coming from and likely to
end up. Principles always lead the person who possesses them somewhere, for
some purpose, to do something (Byron). Principles serve as the foundation for a
system or belief. To most people, it makes sense that a religion would have a set of
principle beliefs; much less often, however, are the principles of an individual
acknowledged
Martin Luther King Jr. was a prime example of an individual whose strong
principle foundation gave him the means to stand up for his beliefs. Within King s
writing, Letter from Birmingham Jail, he makes a blanket claim of his stance by
stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Injustice anywhere is a
threat to justice everywhere. Simply put, King stands for justice. His principle
belief that every person no matter their race deserve equal access to means propels
him to take action. He realized that there were consequences for his belief
particularly jail. Despite knowing this was where he would undoubtedly end up, he
stood behind his belief that humans of all races deserved to feel dignified and
accepted in society, as well as have equal opportunities for voice and action
(involvement in various outlets).
Having discussed King s general set of principle beliefs, one can now compare them
with those of the Catholic Social Teachingbeginning with The Principle of
Providing a Positive Environment for Nursery Children
This document is designed for a Childcare and Education Student to explain how
Oak Tree Nursery Class provides a positive environment for its children.
Here at Oak tree Nursery Class we strive to make sure the children are cared for
within a positive environment. A positive environment means that as well as ensuring
the physical environment is a safe and pleasant one, we also need to make sure the
children and their families feel welcome and wanted when they enter Oak Tree
Nursery class. We aim to do this by;
Treating each child as an individual and meeting their individual needs by
acknowledging parents wishes and beliefs.

Children, unlike adults are willing to try anything if given the chance and so
allowing a child to taste test food is an ideal way to introduce new and healthy foods.
Food and meal times can provide children with many learning opportunities,
particularly by allowing a child to participate at meal times. However, food can also
be a source of frustration and a cause of arguments between to food provider and the
child. Building on positive experiences with food will help reduce such
Ethical And Moral Issues Relevant
Background of the Case:
In this case, I saw as a bioethicist that there was a child brought into to hospital
saying that the child had an asthma attack. But the doctor, Dr. Kildaire, checked the
child and found out that the child had burns on the child s chest. She assumes that the
burns are due to child abuse. She asked the child, but the child does not communicate
well in English, the doctor assumes he is Vietnamese. The doctor wants to let the
police and Child Protective Services know about this case, but she came to the Ethics
Committee and now it is up to us to make our decision.
Ethical or Moral Issues Relevant in the Case:
Social contract theory does apply to this case in a small variation which is
explained by Kymlicka by, One approach stresses a natural equality of physical
power, which makes it mutually advantageous for people to accept convections
that recognize and protect each other s interests and possessions (17). This would
relate to the case because the doctor is trying to protect the child. The most basic
principle is Principles of Bioethics which involves four main principles, (1) respect
the capacity of individuals to choose their own vision of the good life and act
accordingly; (2) foster the interests and happiness of other persons and of society at
large; (3) refrain from harming other persons; and (4) act fairly, distribute benefits
and burdens in an equitable fashion and resolve disputes by means of fair procedures

Isolation
Both Poets write about the isolation of the individual in their poetry Compare and
contrast two poems, one by each poet, taking account of the methods which each
poet uses to write about the isolation of the individual. Both poets write about the
isolation of the individual in their poems An Old Man s Winter s Night and Man And
Dog. Frost depicts an elderly individual who is isolated form others because of the
harshness of the natural environment around him. Whilst Thomas depicts a nomadic
individual who wanders the countryside and who, In contrast to Frosts character

In Man and Dog even though the individual is isolated, he recognises that others
are worse off than he is, he recognises that things could be a lot worse for him and
this is conveyed through the line, Many a man sleeps worse tonight than I shall .
In AOMWN this contrasts to, What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze , the
alliteration shows that the man is at odds with his environment, that this is not a
place for a vulnerable old man and this further isolates him from others. In addition
to this each poet describes a different response to isolation, Frost depicts an
individual who is comfortable being isolated and makes the most of the situation
which he finds himself in whereas Thomas depicts an individual who no longer
wants to be isolated from others. In Man and Dog the line, I ll get no shakedown
with that bedfellow from farmers , the man cuts himself off from others, he chooses
his isolation. In contrast to this in AOMWN the litote, A light he was to no one but
himself implies that it is not by choice that the man chooses to be isolated, but rather
through his inability to communicate to others. In addition to this in Man and Dog a

nature, he makes the best of his isolation and is

Explain factors that may influence communication amp; interpersonal interactions in
health and social care environments.
I will be explaining the barrier which may have influenced the case study of Mr and
Mrs Singh s meeting with the MDT and how environmental factors influenced the
interaction within the meeting.
I am going to be looking at environmental factors such as, noise, setting, seating,
lighting, space and time.
Case Study
Mrs Singh has recently had major surgery and the meeting is aimed at organising a
discharge package for Mrs Singh.
Mrs Singh would most probably not feel 100% and may feel unwell and unable to
give her full attention and feel like her decisions could be the wrong one.
It states in the case ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would give of the impression that she is an aggressive person at the least and
give the impression of not being bothered about Mrs. Singh s situation. For her
having to raise her voice to be heard over the environmental noise it is most
obvious that the setting in which they are in is a bad one and it must be very loud
and busy. As the MDT begin to discuss Mrs Singh. Alot of medical terminology is
used. This is Jargon and Mrs And Mrs singh will be confused and unsure of what is
being spoke about them also, they both speak minimal English which would be even
more difficult for them to comprehend and convert into what they would recognize.
On a positive note the MDT would get their own points over quicker to one another
because they would all understand what is being said and decided. Although Mr.
and Mrs Singh have no say and wouldn t understand because of the language and
Jargon used. They would no longer feel part of the meeting and feel to agree on
everything that has been spoken and decided for them. Time is very limited and the
doctors need to leave very shortly, they would no longer understand what is being
said and they would not be able to ask any questions as they would of felt
rushed. They would not understand the decision and outcome made for them.
This then led to Mrs Singh being uninterested due to all of them environmental
factors which have confused her. They both nod their heads intermittently, this

My Reflection Of My Writing And Communication
Writing is essential to communicating on many levels, and it can display your level
of understanding or lack of understanding communicating. Whether is Facebook,
Twitter, an email to your co works, or a professional document you will be judged by
your writing style based on if it s good or bad. If your writingstyle full of miss
spelled words, bad grammar, and horrible flow you will fail to get your point
across clearly and people will think you are uneducated. This class is step one on
my journey improving my writing and learning as much as possible about the
English language. Just like anything else you have to start with the basics and I
feel like I accomplished that over this last eight weeks. The first bad habit this
class help me correct was mixing up future, past tense, and current situations in one
paragraph. My papers didn t have good flow because I didn t maintain parallelism,
I was just all over the place. Some of my papers read like a bad scary movie, just
jumping all over the place. That can confuse the reader because the document
become hard to follow. Parallelism add smooth flow to your paper, it can keep the
reader eyes on your document. Additionally this method helps the writer maintain
consistency, and a balanced flow of ideas. Parallelism is most important when you
are trying to persuade your audience. Run on and fragments are something most of
us struggle with. Social media is full of run on and fragments and it drive my wife

The Father Of Pan, The Greek God Of Nature
Pan is the Greek god of Nature. He was born father Hermes and his mother, who is
one of
Dryops daughters. When Pan was born and his mother and nurse saw that he had
horns ,ears, tail, and legs of a goat they both ran away to escape Pan s monstrous
appearance. Then Hermes saw his child. He was over joyed and to Pan to Olympus
and proudly introduced his son to the immortals. After that Pan grow up and went to
the forest in Arcadia there he had worshiper.
Pan s main domain was nature, but he mostly stay in Arcadia. Also most of his
follower lived there. Arcadia was a group of mountain dwelling people separated
from other Greeks. Also it is said that if the hunter were disappointed with the chase
they would scourge the statue of Pan.
Being a rustic god Pan was never worshiped in temples or any built building. He
was worshiped in Natural sitting like cave or grottos; these are often called the
caves of Pan. It is said when Pan is lonely he lets out a whale that send fear though
any mortal that hears it, this is part of the reason why panic is dedicated to pan.
There is another thing with pan he is associated with fertility and spring, but he is
also associated with a mother goddess either Rhea or Cybele.
Unlike some other gods Pan was ugly. Also he lived in the mortal world. He hunted
for his food in the mountain and he pursued quite a wild life himself, but he also
spent his time playing with the woodland nymphs he also talked to them too. He also
had another side to him. This
Community Policing And Public Security
Topic: Community Policing
Name
Affiliated institute In every corner of the world, security to the public has always
been a concern. It is a responsibility of the government to provide security to its
people. To ensure that there is a reliable security to the public, the government must
streamline some approaches to security threats and effectively prevent or counter
them. It is a common understanding that in most of the times in our lives, we
happen to interact with the people who break the law or we witness an action which
supposes to be punishable by the law. In the event that we have information that
would improve the state s security levels, we should willingly give it to the police.

When a place is secure to live or visit, will obviously develop, since the members
will actively involve themselves in developmental activities. Although police is
the body mandated with the provision of security to the public, it is not possible
for the police to provide reliable security while working alone. Community
policing gives every member of the public a role to play in ensuring their land is
safe to live in. The security is accorded through the combined efforts by both the
police and the members of the public. The members of the public play a role by
providing/ reporting any security concern to the police, and working with them hand
in hand to restore/ maintain peace in the society. Gramckow and Jacoby (1993:30)
concluded that community policing is a good strategy to address the concerns and
problems of communities, since it is decentralized, proactive, and deals with crime
prevention and the fear of crime. Since the police stay within the community, it
becomes easy for faster response in cases of emergency. Whenever the police are
called upon for help, they can turn up within a short while.
Positive relationship between police and members of the public
It is common that police are not regarded as good people in the face of the members
of the public. This is usually due to the nature of their work, as they work to enforce
the law. Community policing has played a major role in changing how the
community perceived the
My Life Is Not Well Known By Many
Her name was not well known by many. She was quiet, soft spoken most times. She
feared perfection in the past. She wanted to prove to everyone, including her father
that she could achieve their expectations. She constantly reminds herself that
nobody is perfect. Even if she did know that, she could still feel everyone analyzing
her; analyzing how imperfect she was. She only allowed certain people into her
life out of fear of those people leaving once they saw her true identity. She did not
allow most people to be welcomed into her life, so it would not cause as much
heartbreak if they decided to leave her behind. Her life was not as horrible as it could
have been. Other people had worse problems than she would ever have. All she...

The Theory Of Induction And Induction
Introduction
Induction machines are classified into two which includes motors and generators.
The basic principles of these motors can be applied and hence develop equations
describing its behaviour. The most common motors include squirrel cage, wound
rotor ranging from few horsepower to thousands as the case may be. Squirrel Cage
Rotor consist of a bare copper, slightly longer than the rotor, while a wound rotor has
a 3 phase windings, and are evenly distributed in the slots, usually connected in 3
wye. The resistors are mainly used during the start up period under normal running
conditions.

Induction Motor tolerate a level of unbalance. The variable speed drive are also
affected as a result of the voltage unbalance which consist of three phase rectifier

generating and industrial stations, hence it can be classified BOV (Balanced

phase voltage not equal to each other, therefore the positive sequence component is
greater than rated voltage and finally UBUV (Unbalanced Under voltage), voltages
are not equal, and hence the positive sequence component is lesser

Background Of Method Acting
Method acting has impacted many actresses and actors since the 1930 s. Method
acting is a technique of acting where an actor takes a part and completes emotional
identification, which is based on the system by Stanislavsky. Method acting takes a
lot of devotion and emotional bravery. You have to understand the history and the
development of method actingto understand the goal. If completing the method in a
scene very well then the audience will feel your emotions clearly and that means you
have created a emotional, truthful performance. Method acting is very important but
first we have to know who created method acting.
C. Stanislavsky was a Russian stage actor and director who developed the lifelike
performance technique known as the Stanislavsky method or method acting. When
he was 14 he joined a theatrical group that was put together by his family. Also, in
the 1800 s he became a better actor and began to produce and direct plays.
Stanislavsky was important figure in theater history because he trained so many
actors with his method and proposed that actor training should include something
more physical and vocal training. He said that if theater was going to be meaningful
then it needed to move beyond what people thought the average theater performance
was going to be. Stanislavsky used his method to revolutionize how we perform
because actors need to use emotions to make the acting very real and so the audience
can be drawn in more. His method changed acting very
Aldo Leopold Summary
Aldo Leopold takes the stance of both a sportsman, and a conservationist. He wants
to see the joining and collaboration of sportspersons and conservationist to help
preserve and/or regain wildlife. Although he speaks as a sportsman as well as
conservationist, he makes it clear that he does not condone all the past actions of
sportspersons (p. 453). He points out that both the sportsmen and wildlife
protectionists have made blunders in the past regarding the welfare of wildlife, but
he states that the worthiness of any cause is not measured by its clean record, but
by its readiness to see the blots when they are pointed out, and to change its mind (p.
453). He feels that the two groups are too divided, focusing on the other s past

She begins her writing with the very bold statement: Hunting is an act of violence (p.
454). She makes it very clear from square one that she does not support hunting. She
then goes on to attack the claim that hunting is a sport, saying that hunting cannot be
a sport because the animal has not consented to the game (p.455). She then goes on to
describe the three types of hunters: the happy hunter, who hunts for psychological
need, the holist hunter, who hunts for ecological need, and the holy hunter, who
hunts for spiritual needs (p.456 8). Kheel disputes each hunter s reasoning. She says
that the happy hunter s need and desire to hunt is immoral because it pays no
consideration to the animal (p.456 7). As for the holist hunter, Kheel says that he or
she overlooks the vast differences between human predation and natural predation (p.
457 8). In nature, predators prey on the weak, sick, old, and young, but human hunters
prey on the fittest individuals in the ecosystem, taking out the strongest members of a

Parli Self Evaluation
Parli Self Evaluation This was the first time during my collegiate career giving a
parli debate, so I thought it was very challenging to say the least. Some of the
Improvements I could make were actually practicing the debate itself. I could also
practice body language and making eye contact with the audience. Lastly, I could
improve on my writingskills so I understand what I am trying to say when debating
against the other team. A. A strong point that I feel like I done well on was how I
used the proper format for debate. This allowed me to have a well laid out topic to
present for the audience. This allowed the audience to follow along with what I was
discussing. Overall, I felt like the parli debate was very challenging and I did not

Dizzy Gelespie (John Birks Gillespie) Essay
The people of today, raised by the sounds of The Beatles and Pearl Jam have
forgotten all about the musicians that paved the way for these artists, and the musical
styles that evolved into rock and roll, rhythm and blues and rap or hip hop.
Unfortunately the music that once dominated the night clubs, restaurants, and radio
stations is now heardonly in elevators or when we go to a grandparents house to
visit. What is left of jazzare small portions of the music that people take and sample
with in a new song. Jazz and its historical figures have mistreated and forgotten by
today s society. One of the figure most forgotten is John Birks Gillespie, known to
the jazz world as quot;Dizzy quot; Gillespie.

Gillespie admired the style and work of Roy Elridge so much that he started to
sound like Elridge. Some time later Gillespie was hired in a band because he
played with Elridge=s style so well. In his studies he would transcribe or learn the
notes and phrases that Elridge would play during his solos (Powis, 58). Although to
become a Jazz musician, Gilllespie did not idolize only jazz musicians, he also greatly
enjoyed listening to and examining the styles of musicians like Stravinsky, a
virtuoso composer of the classic period, and Maurice Ravel another composer,
famous for works like quot;Bolero quot;, a piece that consisted of a phrase that
repeated over and over, each time getting louder and thicker (Powis, 58).
Dizzy unfortunately was to be later recognized by many for his many
distinguishable trademarks instead of the musical proficiency he worked so hard
for. He was famous for his sense of humor. At a performance Dizzy asked the
audience if he could introduce the band. The audience replied swiftly quot;yes quot;.
He than began introducing the saxophone player to the drummer and the trumpet
player to the trombonist and so forth (Wastrous, January 17). He also expressed his
incredible humor within his music as well. In his own interpretation of the spiritual,
quot;Swing Low Sweet Chariot, quot; Gillespie develops the song into quot;Swing

There where accounts that had the same debit and credit amounts just a few days
apart. At the end of the last quarter in 2009, there were 22 sales recorded. At the
end of the previous quarters there was not a high amount of sales which leads one
to think that the sales were booked at the end of the year to make the company
meet their goal. There was also a high number of invoices with no bill of landing.
With a high number of no bill of landings, false billing is presumed. With a bill of
landing of a lesser weigh than that which was invoiced, leads to the full order not
being shipped, and over charging of the customer or that special arrangements have
been made with the customer to receive a discount for early billing. There was also
5 times where invoices where invoiced before they were shipped. This leds to the

The Importance Of A Post-Secondary Education

He said that success in high school would directly lead to success in college. Simple
enough, and true in some aspects; however, when I reflected on this idea, it was
mostly inaccurate. High school since its inception was always meant to harbor
good work ethic and habits; however, in practice this doesn t always play out the
way it was meant to. In high school, you can go through the majority of your four
year experience without much effort and can still succeed. The homework isn t too
intensive and teachers give out several opportunities if students miss their mark. This
isn t bad practice to guide students through their four or even more years of their
college journey however, it can lead to a difficult switch during their freshman year
of college.
One of the exceptions to this is Timothy McGee. While Mr. McGee doesn t just
hand you the credit he does do his best to help you succeed and graduate so you
can get out of high school and into college where you will be taking the classes you
want to take when you wish to take them. McGee is a great teacher and will always

The dictionary defines architecture as the art and science of designing and erecting
buildings (dictionary.com).
Since the beginning of civilization, architects have been designing structures and

Nineteenth Century: Iron, Glass and Steel
The nineteenth century saw some changes from the previous artistic periods. This
period contained practical ideas, still with a sort of creative though.
Buildings and towers were built with steel and iron beams and supports. Glass
covered steel/iron webs to create walls, large window, and sunroofs .
A famous architect from this time period is Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
He built the Eiffel Tower, Bon MarchГѓ Department Store, The Nice
Observatory and The Garabit Bridge.
Following this period was the modern period. Many of the styles and ideas were
carried to the Modern period, and built into designs in a whole different perspective,
as now there were different architectures with different ideas and dreams.

It was created to replace the great basilica (temple), which had been designed by
Constantine the Great. This temple had been built over the apostle, St. Peter s grave.
Construction of the church began in 1507, and the materials used to create St. Peter s

Nationalism In Australia Essay
Nationalism can be both positively and negatively influential when shaping a view of
the world. It excludes and includes, builds and tears down nations and creates and
breaks relations with other nations. Nationalism is a constant issue throughout history
and is more identifiable today than previously. The most common examples of
Nationalism generally refer to the negative representations such as demonstrations
against immigration or politicians arguing for the removal or prevention of
immigrants entering into the country. Nationalism whether it is positive or negative
is still relevant in both national and international politics.
Nationalism has existed as long as the idea of a nation has existed. A broad definition

An event similar to the goal of these parties to remove Islam from Australia was the

The Goals Of Social Media
How many times have you read or been told that in order to keep yourself
accountable to your goals, that you should announce them to the people around you?
This is something that we see in many books and articles and we see people
following this information as they post their goals on social media. However, how
many times do we actually see them accomplish these goals?
New studies are actually showing that announcing your goals is one of the worst
things that you can do if you really want to achieve them.
Why?
The reason is because of naysayers. Those people who do not want to see you
succeed for whatever reason.

That scares them.
How to Deal with Naysayers
The fact is that you are not going to change the people around you. There is no way
for you to make them believe in you.
However, you can change yourself and how you deal with the negativity that they
bring into your life.
The first thing that you need to remember is that you more to yourself than you do to
the naysayers. What is it that you owe these people, which is forcing you to prove
them right?
Really think about what I am saying. These people do not pay your bills, they do not
raise your children and they are not in control of anything in your life. Remaining in
a situation where you are unhappy just to make them happy seems a little silly.
Ask yourself, what could they lose by you finding happiness and reaching your goals.
These people might even try to convince you that you are fine just the way that you
are in order to stop you from making the changes that you want to make. You see,
they are stealthy, most of them won t make it obvious that they are trying to hold you
back, but instead will try to convince you that they care about you, just as you are.
It is important for you to remember that these people need for you to fail. You see, if
you fail, they can continue to tell themselves that there is no point in trying to get
healthy because if you weren t successful they won t be either.
It is just another way for them to come up with an excuse, a reason that they shouldn t

Reducing Food Waste At Trine University
Almost everyone encounters food every day, and a lot of times, it is taken for
granted. According to worldfooddayusa.org in 2009, 2.3 billion tons of food was
wasted worldwide, and in the U.S. alone 20 pounds of food is wasted per person
each month. The amount of food wasted is ridiculously high and needs to be
stopped. If Trine University takes steps towards preventing foodwaste, it could not
only save the university money, but also save the environment in the process. There
are simple solutions to help solve the food waste issue at Trine University, like
creating a voting system for food choices, lowering the portion size, and recycling
unused or extra food. Taking steps to prevent food waste will benefit the university,
the economy.
To begin with, over filling plates in the cafeteria is a common problem leading to
an increase in food waste at Trine University. Getting a portion too big to finish in
one sitting will leave food being sent to the trash instead of being eaten by someone
else. The article Portion Size Me: Plate Size Induced Consumption Norms and Win

that visual consumption plays when preparing meals on different sized dinnerware.
Study one in the article states, We contend that dinnerware provides a visual anchor
of an appropriate fill level, which in turn, serves as a consumption norm (Wansink and

Abraham Lincoln s Assassination Of The United States
On April 14, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes
Booth while at Ford s Theater. This is a widely known fact but many of the events
leading up to his death are obscure. Why was he assassinated? What was really
supposed to happen that dreadful night? What made the south so mad? How did this
affect the future of the United States? All of these questions have answers, the only
thing you have to do is look.
Let s start by getting to know our late president. Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth
President of the United States, was elected on November 6, 1860. He only received
40% of the popular vote, none of which was from the South. Lincoln became
president during the highest conflict between North and South in ... Show more

He was also a Confederate sympathizer, vehement in his denunciation of Lincoln, and
was strongly opposed to the abolition of slavery in the United States. Booth and a
group of co conspirators originally plotted to kidnap Lincoln but later planned to kill
him, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William H. Seward in a
bid to help the Confederacy s cause. Although Robert E. Lee s Army of Northern
Virginia had surrendered four days earlier, Booth believed the American Civil War
was not yet finished because Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston s army was
still fighting the Union Army. Of the conspirators, only Booth was completely
successful in carrying out his part of the plot. Booth shot Lincoln once in the back
of the head, and the President died the next morning. Seward was severely
wounded but recovered. Vice President Johnson was never attacked at all.
Following the assassination, Booth fled on horseback to southern Maryland,
eventually making his way to a farm in rural northern Virginia 12 days later, where
he was located. Booth s companion gave himself up, but Booth refused and was
shot by Boston Corbett, a Union soldier, after the barn in which he was hiding was
set ablaze. Eight other conspirators or suspects were tried and convicted, and four

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night By Dylan Thomas
Written by Dylan Thomas, the poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was
published in 1951, two years before his early death at age 39. Referred to as a
villanelle, this poem contains five three lined stanzas and one four lined stanza. In
the first stanza, the unrevealed speaker is telling an unknown person not to give into
death peacefully, but to fight against it as he or she expresses, rage, rage against the
dying of the light (line 3). In this first stanza, Thomas uses a metaphor to compare
dying of the light to death. In the next stanza, the speaker acknowledges that wise
men near death know that their death is inevitable because their words had forked no
lightning, but still encourages them not to give into death (4 5).... Show more content

To illustrate, anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase, is identified
through the repeated use of do not go gentle into that good night (1,6,12,18).
Similarly, Thomas also repeats the phrase Rage, rage against the dying of the light to
create the same effect (3,9,15,19). Given that the poem is a villanelle, by definition, it
follows a pattern in which the first and third lines are alternated at the end of the
stanzas and both repeated at the end of the last stanza. By way of repetition, Thomas
seems to be emphasizing the message the lines express, which is to not die peacefully
but to fight against death, showing an unwillingness to give up. The repetition and
strict structure by which the poem follows also helps the poem flow and sound
pleasing to the ears (euphony). Furthermore, Thomas repeats this message, but with
each stanza he applies it to a new subject: wise men...good men...wild men...grave
men...my father (4,7,10,13,16). Interestingly, by changing the subject, Thomas gives
the impression that the message is meant for all people, no matter what they are
dealing with or who they may be. In addition, Thomas uses exact rhyme to help with
flow and unity between the stanzas. For example, the two repeated phrases rhyme
with night and light, while the middle lines of the tercets rhyme with day and they (1
3,5 6,9,12,15,18 19). By staying true to the strict villanelle form, the five three lined
stanzas follow an
Comparison Of The Hundred Year s War Between England
And...
There are many events that took place between England and France that built up to
what is known as the Hundred Year s War. William of Normandy s conquest of the
duchy of Aquitaine allowed England to have claim over lands in France. This
increased tension between the English king, Edward III, and the French king, Phillip
VI, that would inevitably create a war that lasted one hundred and sixteen years
(Fiero 175).
King Edward III maintained that he held claim to the French throne. When Edward
III was only fifteen years old, Charles IV of France died without a male heir. This
left the succession of the French throne to Edward III through his mother Isabella,
sister to Charles IV and daughter of Phillip VI. Edward III s claim on the French
Similarities And Differences Of The 13 Colonies
The 13 Colonies are broken down into 3 parts, Middle, Southern, and New England
Colonies. There were many similarities and differences between all of the 13
Colonies. Many of them ranging from their climate and geography to the role
women and African Americans played. A variety of people came from all around the
world to the 13 Colonies for many different reasons. In the Middle Colonies, there
was a very diverse population. It was composed of Dutch, French, Germans, Scottish,
and Irish. The Southern Colonies were very different though, people from there came
from England. They were adventurers, merchants, nobles, farmers, traders, and slaves.
They all went to the Southern Colonies for economic opportunities and they heard of
gold in this region. Like the Southern Colonies, the New England colonists came
from England too and were also farmers. Their reasoning is different though, the

On July 1, 1946 the first atomic bomb test since the end of World War II occurred
over the island of Bikini Atoll. Lieutenant General Roy S. Geiger, United States
Marine Corps observed the test and recognized that atomic bombs could render
amphibious assaults useless due to the dense concentration of troops, ships, and
supplies at the beachheads. To reduce the possibility of nuclear bombs being used
to combat amphibious assaults, dispersion would be crucial; however, this would
lead to a slower consolidation of forces ashore. New ways to achieve dispersion
without sacrificing speed were studied and the helicopter was deemed the most

crucial to the amphibious doctrine because it had a greater lifting capacity than its

shoulders. Christy wasn t appointed or elected. No one challenged her as she took
on the position of leader in the group; therefore I assumed that no one had a
problem with it. The leadership style that I thought the group conformed to was
the democratic style. Christy, being the leader, approached us as a group about the
views that were laid out on the table, and we chose which idea that was consistent
with our presentation style. Each member was allowed to express his or her
opinions freely, and I had enough trust in Christy to know which idea would or

Because of social media, people are being conditioned to crave external feedback

Letterman Digital Arts Center, San Francisco
George Lucas Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, CA is at the top of every Star
Wars fan s fantasy trip list. Who wouldn t want to hang out on a property that has a
library under a stained glass dome, a 300 seat theater, its own fire station, Lake
Ewok and a swimming pool that is rumored to resemble R2 D2? But, there s one
catch, it s nearly impossible to get an invite to the private property. It has even been
said that Lucas turned down a request from then President Reagan to tour the grounds.
So, what s the next best thing? A visit to the Letterman Digital Arts Center at the
Presidio Trust in San Francisco, home to Lucasfilm Ltd., Industrial Light and Magic,
LucasArts, and the George Lucas Educational Foundation. The buildings aren t open
to the public either, but fans are welcome to visit the lobby of Building B to see
some of the Star Wars memorabilia on display, tour the famous gardens, or take

Gun Industry Research Paper
Guns are a part of American culture, and guns are also a part of the economy in the
US. While not a large industry, the small arms and hunting industries contribute
roughly $29B annually to the US economy. While many industries have externalities,
the gun industry s externalities are particularly damaging: 31,000 deaths and 70,000
injuries per year . Guns were invented as military weapons, and while huntingand
recreation are part of today s industry, guns primary use remains human combat. In
the 20th century, the arms industry split into two industries: a hugely profitable
defense industry which sells only to the government, and a tiny small arms industry
accessible to ordinary American citizens. Despite causing a $15B loss every year to
The City Of Branson s Fiscal Year Runs
Budget Process Goals
The City of Branson s fiscal year runs January 1 through December 31. Typically, the
budget preparation process begins in mid July when budget documents and
instructions are distributed by the Finance Department to the each city department.
The various departments have approximately three weeks to assess any budget goals,
capital and personnel requests, and to complete projections for the current fiscal year.
By mid August, the Finance Department completes a preliminary review of the
departments budget, personnel and capital requests. The City Administrator then
meets with the Finance Director to review any requests, and schedules one on one
meetings with each department head.
As the first organization in Missouri to implement Priority Based Budgeting, prior to
their administrative review each department head is encouraged to perform a review
of programs offered by their department and to establish what programs are not
meeting the results identified by the board. The purpose of this process is to allow
for reallocation of resources to programs that are determined to need more funding, in
place of simply incrementally increasing the departmental line item budget. Aside
from simply eliminating the programs that are not achieving desired results, the
directors are encouraged to develop solutions to how the identified programs may
perform more efficiently. Examples include identifying programs that may be:

Essay on Appearance vs. Reality in Peter Shaffer s Amadeus
Appearance vs. Reality in Peter Shaffer s Amadeus
In the world of the 18th century, appearance was everything; and appearance often
conflicted with reality. Such is the case in Peter
Shaffer s, Amadeus, which follows Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s musical career.
Mozart s career was enveloped in deceit and falsity, appearing to be brought on by
poor choices he made, when all along he was being sabotaged by Salieri. When
Mozart arrives in Vienna, Antonio Salieri pretends to welcome him. He even writes
a welcome March for Mozart, to be played as the young, rebellious musician enters
the court. However, Salieri hates Mozart from the beginning. Salieri is nice to

So shameful I can hardly speak of it even now...A design childish, cruel beyond all
justifying to hasten the man towards madness or even death. Unable to stop myself,
I got me a cloack of grey yes and a mask of grey. And appeared myself to the
demented creature as the figure from his dreams. Yes! I, Antonio Salieri, First Royal
Kappelmeister to the Empire, stalked in this guise through the freezing night, into
that dingy alley where he lived. Stationed myself beneath his window. And waited.
(Amadeus, 79)
Mozart sees him standing below his window, and invites the ghastly figure up to his
room. Salieri begins tramping up the stairs with feet of stone and enters the place
where Mozart lives. The poor musician is half mad and ranting about his incomplete
Mass. The conversation continues... Mozart: ...Is it not good? Salieri: What else
would it be? Mozart: Signore?...Signore...Salieri? Why? It s a game, yes?...Good
game!...Has it been you, all the time? Salieri: All the time: yes...All the time. Ten

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Part Timers
Part Timers According to Singapore Employment (Part Time Employees)
Regulations (2009), part timers are defined as employees who work for less than
35 hours a week. Advantages Using part timers can help to keep labour costs
down, especially benefit cost. For instance, part timers are not entitled to flexible
benefits such as dental and holiday subsidy, etc. Breaks and vacations for a part
timer can be covered by another by staggering their job hours so that there are no
job disruptions. Thirdly, the company may be able to attract a pool of staffs that
have a wealth of knowledge from prior working experiences. For example, retirees
who have relevant experience in the industry are able to serve as effective mentors to
younger staff. Disadvantages... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These extra trainings incur both time and monetary costs as a more experienced
full time worker may need to allocate time to serve as a mentor to the part timers.
They may not possess the same level of security as full time workers as they can
leave any time since they are often not bound by contract and are paid by the hour.
There is a greater inclination for part timers to leave when they are offered a full
time job or a job that pays a high salary. Since part timers are not entitled to the
same amount of compensation and benefits as compared to full timers, it s not
surprising that they have less loyalty towards their job. Casual Labour Casual
employees are probably the most flexible of the three groups. Their working hours
may be arranged in a non regular pattern and usually paid by the hour. Many
organisations keep a file of casual employees they can contact when required.
Red Bull Marketing Plan
How Red Bull woke up the teen market
It looks (and tastes) like medicine, but it still conquered the soft drinks trade. Now
the edgy pick me up is moving into the grown up world of motor racing. John Arlidge

The Observer, Sunday 5 December 2004

At this time of year fallen leaves shroud the carefully planned suburbs of Milton
Keynes. Mist drifts in from the fields. The posh car firms Mercedes, Volkswagen,
Audi whose UK head offices ring the Buckinghamshire town are gearing down for
the winter. But last week the end of year gloom was lifted by the arrival of a most
unlikely new inhabitant.
A bronzed and energetic Austrian, who has made a billion pound fortune selling a

The health and energy drinks market is the fastest growing sector of the burgeoning
soft drinks market, doubling in size every year to reach ВЈ1.5bn last year. Red Bull is
the market leader and its revenues rose 10 per cent to ВЈ1bn last year, on sales of
1.5bn cans. Vodka and Red Bull is still the most popular alcoholic drink for under 20s.
The pick me up s anti brand brand status explains its rapid success, argues Nirmalya
Kumar, senior analyst at the London Business School. Red Bull has never done
anything in a conventional way. It has not used normal advertising, nor marketing.
When it sponsors events or sports, it tends to go for minority ones.
While the no logo generation is happy, the premium price on cans more than ВЈ1,
compared with 50p for Coke or Pepsi has kept the money flowing in to the firm s
Alpine HQ. But what is an irreverent Austrian doing in one of Britain s newest
towns and why is he spending a fortune buying his way into a big brand sport in
crisis?
Frustrated by the dominance of business interests over sport and the continued
dominance of Ferrari, some of the big F1 teams are threatening to leave the F1
circus and form a new competition. Some observers say Red Bull is keeping pace
with its core market as it gets older. Formula One has the kind of dangerous, edgy,
masculine image that suits Red Bull, says Richard Hall, chairman of the drinks
consultancy Zenith International. The early adopters who made it what
The Anglo-Saxon Generation
Imagine fifty years or more from now, when the modern American civilization would
cease to exist. What would that generation think of this generation? What would be
left for them to examine and infer about this generation? Artifacts and burial sites
are one of the many treasures of the past that archaeologists use to help them figure
out what the past generation was like. What if all they saw were very violent
movies? Would they think that this generation was one that was ruled by violence?
Archeologists have found remains of the earlier societies, like the Anglo Saxons, and
they can infer what the society did and valued. Based on the poem From Beowulfand
the artifacts found in their burial site, people can infer what the upper class Anglo
Saxonswere like.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This bonded their community and made it more sturdy and long lasting. When
Beowulf died, his warriors [placed] his ashes, along all of the dragon s treasure, in a
huge burial tower by the sea, where it can be seen by voyagers (From Beowulf 49,
1). Gold was an important valuable since their greatest king was buried with the
dragon s mixture of gold and other valuable treasures. Anglo Saxons valued strength
and their warriors so much that their kings showered [their warriors] with tons of
bling swords, armor, rings, you name it (00:48 00:49 www.shmoop.com, 2). Since
they valued gold and wealth, getting inexhaustible amount of gold and other
extravagant objects that the kings might have given them were a big deal. Overall,
the Anglo Saxon s had many values within their culture that without most of them,
the society and its artifacts might not have lasted for so long. The artifacts and poems
that they have left behind for the generations that have formed after them could see
what kind of civilization they were. According to the remnants, they mostly valued
loyalty, strength, and wealth. Those are the morals and ethics that kept the society
Should College Students Take General Education Classes
More and more college students seems to be asking the question of why are general
education courses like math and history still mandatory to graduate. In this twenty
first century, fast paced world we live in college students are focused more on career
planning. In countries like Europe college students are not required to take general
educationclasses and are more focused on their majors. The argument can be made
that colleges should not require students to take general education courses. This
decision in turn would help collegestudents with finances, time and energy. In Today
s world everybody is trying to save a dollar. With this being said college students are
hit hard with tuition, books and other expenses. College students could
How The Hays-Code Style Affected Disney s Films
The Hays code drove Fleischer studioВґs style into a cuter, child like genre.
Furthermore, the studio was trying to compete with Disney, so they stopped
producing what they did best. The two films, GulliverВґs travel and Mr. Bugs Goes
to Town exemplify their post code style, and their intents to compete with Snow
White. The studio even produced a collection of shorts called Color Classics that
were too similar to DisneyВґs Silly Symphonies. These films didn t contain anything
that could offend the public, and some of the Color Classic shorts are exciting to
watch. However, Betty BoopВґs surrealistic films left a gap. Myron Waldman
declares that if the code hadn t changed Betty, the studio would eventually change
into a more realistic art style instead of cute. In the other hand, Disney had a few
censorship issues, since most of his films were originally for children. However, he
was also affected by the code to a certain extent. Disney had some issues... Show

Once Iwerks left Disney in 1930 he formed his own studio that starred Willie
Whopper and Flip the frog. UB Iwerks films were characterized by containing very
explicit material. Flip said damn and made obscene noises when there were problems.
IwerkВґs cartoons contained references to sex, drugs, and alcohol. One of the most
shocking gags appears in Willie WhopperВґs Spite Flight (1933). Willie goes to
heaven in his airplane, this bothers to Saint Peter, so he gives them the finger
(fig8). Iwerks had to do major changes when the code was enforced. Furthermore,
the MGM didn t renew his contract, so he went from animating wild shorts to
making cute films for children. Iwerks is another example of how the code pushed
studios towards a specific genre and oppressed creativity. However, It is true that
the code wasn t the only reason for the changes. Flip and Willie weren t that popular
as Mickey or Betty. Iwerks realized that people weren t interested anymore in his
The Starry Night Essay
In Phaedo, Socrates tells of the form Beauty existing as itself by itself along with a
Good and a Great (Phaedo, 100b). He explains that is something is described as
beautiful, it is only described as so because something beautiful shares the same
meaning as the Beautiful (Phaedo, 100c). He also tells, But I simply, naively, and
perhaps foolishly cling to this, that nothing else makes it beautiful other than the
presence of, or the sharing in, or however you may describe its relationship to that
Beautiful we mentioned, for I will not insist on the precise nature of the relationship,
but that all beautiful things are beautiful by the Beautiful (Phaedo, 100d). In telling
this, Socrates is saying that the beautiful does not exist by itself, but instead, it itself
is Beauty. In order to make sense of Socrates s definition of Beauty, I think that one
must understand the difference between the beautiful and the Beautiful. The beautiful
coincides with the visible because the idea of beauty is subjective to the human
viewing the beautiful object. The Beautiful corresponds with the the invisible because
it is objective and perfect, and Beauty is a concept that never changes.... Show more

The Starry Night cannot possibly be beautiful only because it shares in that
Beauty. This work of art may not inspire the sense of wonder and pleasure in all
humans who view the painting, but rather, the viewing of art is subjective. One
could have the opinion that this piece of art is merely one man s view of beauty
that does not coincide with the universal form of Beauty. Artwork may never reach
the form of the Beautiful in the sense that it cannot be perfected and is only an
outward projection of the artist s inner mind. So one may say the artist s inner mind
is imperfect and composed of many parts, which complies with the visible and the

Canada is a country that is rich in natural resources and maintains an economy that is
service based. The natural resources allow Canada to support its own manufacturing
and maintain a strong export base. Although Canada does have a manufacturing
portion to its economy, the service industry is the largest area of Canada s economic
growth.
Product Canada seems to mimic the United States when it comes to skin care.
However, the French side of Canada has always valued having beautiful skin and
using skin care products to maintain their beauty. Like most of the world, Canadians
wait until they see lines or wrinkles before they start worrying about revising the
condition. Today people know that they live in their skin, the largest organ in the
human body that protects them from the elements and holds all other components
together. They also realize that they have to start protecting their skin earlier in life
from overexposure to the sun through the use of products that protect and moisturize
the skin to help maintain its health.
As consumers become more educated in the products they use and hold companies
that produce them more accountable they are demanding products that are more
natural. One example

Of Mice And Men Critical Essay

  • 1. Of Mice And Men Critical Essay Writing a critical essay on the topic of "Of Mice and Men" can present both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, the novel provides a rich tapestry of themes, characters, and social commentary, offering a plethora of material for analysis. On the other hand, the popularity and scholarly attention given to this work mean that crafting a unique and insightful essay requires a deep understanding of the text and the ability to offer fresh perspectives. One of the difficulties lies in striking a balance between summarizing the plot and delving into critical analysis. It's crucial to avoid mere retelling and focus on interpreting the events, characters, and symbolism within the context of the novel's broader themes. The challenge is to go beyond surface-level observations and uncover the nuances that make the work a timeless piece of literature. Moreover, expressing a coherent and well-structured argument is essential. Connecting ideas seamlessly and providing evidence to support one's interpretations can be demanding, requiring a thorough understanding of literary devices, historical context, and the author's intentions. The task also involves navigating the complexities of social issues presented in the novel, such as the American Dream, loneliness, and the harsh realities of the Great Depression. Additionally, maintaining an original voice and avoiding clichГ©s or overused analyses is crucial. Given the extensive academic discourse surrounding "Of Mice and Men," finding a unique perspective can be challenging but is essential for producing a standout essay. In conclusion, crafting a critical essay on "Of Mice and Men" demands a combination of literary insight, analytical skill, and the ability to synthesize information. While it may be challenging, the process offers a rewarding opportunity to engage deeply with a classic work of literature and contribute to the ongoing conversation about its significance. • 2. Social Orientation And Social Mobility Before people started to define each other by their social classes, there were other forms of stratification. For example the social position of a person was fixed by law, custom or inherited status. These positions were reinforced by a set of norms that controlled the relationship between the members of each group. These groups were seen to be closed as there was no room for social mobility, they were predetermined. This soon changed due to industrialisation and became more open , the newer system was then characterised by competition and a higher chance of social mobility. A social position of a person was changed from being fixed by the law to class, to make distinctions between the groups it was focused on property and economic status. Social mobility would be achieved through education, for example a person could receive a promotion at work, in which gaining more money, this would then mean that you could go up a social class. (Childs, 2006 PAGE NUMBER) In 2006 there was a call for a classless society which would mean that everyone would have the same chances and access to higher education would remove traditional class barriers, giving better opportunities to everyone. There have been three explanations for the persistence of social inequalities and these are the functionalist model, the libertarian model and egalitarian model. The functionalist perspective has its origins in the works of Emilie Durkheim, the model argues that social inequality is an essential
  • 3. Issue Reparation Essay The issues reparations bring are multifaceted and complex, ranging from how reparations will be paid to dealing with varying public responses. A thorough investigation is required to fully identify the problems and provide any solutions. The issue of reparations is not singular to the current debates in the US. Both in other countries and in the US before, some semblance of reparations have transpired. After the Second World War, both the United States and Canada enacted legislation for reparations for the interned Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians (Wood). Canada s laws focused on rebuilding the affected communities, while the USA focused on reconciliation and education to hopefully prevent a repetition of Executive Order 9066. Canada created the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation which then gave more than $17 million to housing for the elderly and to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 40 (Coates). The bill, which was re introduced every session of congress since 1989, would initiate a four step plan towards reparations (Conyers). The injustice and inhumanity of slavery would be acknowledged, a commission would be established to research the effects of slavery economically and socially, then the commission would look into the effects of those forces on current day African Americans, as well as recommend appropriate remedies to Congress based on this research. This four tiered plan would be capable of implementing reparations after studious research, backed by the government and therefore the people. However, this bill has never made it past this early stage, despite the 28 years put into making it an accessible debate topic. Even outside of politics the issue isn t widely debated or discussed. How has such a well thought out plan not been given any recognition or
  • 4. The Endless Steppe Essay Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. (Johann von Goethe) The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig is a novel about a family s determination to survive. In the novel it tells of how determination, the human ability to adopt, and happiness can hold a family together and help them even preserver over all odds. In addition, The Endless Steppe tells of Reisa, Ryia, and Esther tales of how they overcame these ordeals and survived in Siberia in their own way. The second person that illustrated the theme of the book was Esther s mother Raya. Raya showed this by always keeping a positive attitude, which raises the spirits around her. For instance, in the novel her husband went off to war, his entire battalion was wiped out and everyone had given up hope of him returning except for her. She kept saying, Be sure to get some farmer s cheese, the kind he adores. Her positive attitude paid off in the end after everyone thought she was grief ridden she proved them wrong when he returned. In addition, her positive attitude did pay off again when he husband was thought to be lost in a when he did not return for work. Everyone was starting to be worried and lose hope but she continued to hope and believe and tell the others to and he returned again. That is how Raya illustrated the theme of the book by maintaining her positive attitude and encouraging others around her with it. The third person that illustrated the theme of the book was Esther. Esther showed the theme of the book by the ability to accept change and her love for her family, which held them together. For instance, when she was forced for her home on the train she was scared and she did not know what the future held for her but she pursued on. She even did not even complain in situations that other people would. In addition, she also had to endure not having her own space, new roommates, even different schools, and making new friend. However, even through all
  • 5. Banning Alcohol From Mainstream Consumption Let s travel back in time, for a second, to the 1840 s. Hundreds upon thousands of Americans flocked to the western half of the country, fleeing their homes and risking their very lives for a chance to strike it rich. Some were triumphant, others failed, and everyone learned a little something along the way... Now, fast forward a few decades to the twentieth century. The United States government just enacted an amendment into the Constitution, banning alcohol from mainstream consumption. A collective of citizens grew irate and resisted, beginning a movement that would effect the country for years to come. So what do the Gold Rush and Prohibition have to do with the Internet? Well, they re essentially what the Internet has been like for me. As both a creator and consumer, cyberspace has turned making and viewing art into both a prospect and, in some instances, a protest. Five, even ten years ago, nobody could have imagined the kind of force the digital age would usher. As information was exchanged, people soon figured out that they had a virtual library at their fingertips. I don t even have to think about leaving the house to find out which watercolor brand was the best money could buy a quick Google search could yield plenty of answers to that question. (About 1,040,000 results, to be exact!) I see myself a miner, and the Internet gives me the tools I need to create my works. It s no coincidence creators have made it this way. I could conduct research for a concept
  • 6. Martin Luther King Principles Essay Principles prompt activity, impel motion, direct choices. A principled person always has a place to stand, knows where he or she is coming from and likely to end up. Principles always lead the person who possesses them somewhere, for some purpose, to do something (Byron). Principles serve as the foundation for a system or belief. To most people, it makes sense that a religion would have a set of principle beliefs; much less often, however, are the principles of an individual acknowledged Martin Luther King Jr. was a prime example of an individual whose strong principle foundation gave him the means to stand up for his beliefs. Within King s writing, Letter from Birmingham Jail, he makes a blanket claim of his stance by stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Simply put, King stands for justice. His principle belief that every person no matter their race deserve equal access to means propels him to take action. He realized that there were consequences for his belief particularly jail. Despite knowing this was where he would undoubtedly end up, he stood behind his belief that humans of all races deserved to feel dignified and accepted in society, as well as have equal opportunities for voice and action (involvement in various outlets). Having discussed King s general set of principle beliefs, one can now compare them with those of the Catholic Social Teachingbeginning with The Principle of

But the doctor, Dr. Kildaire, checked the child and found out that the child had burns on the child s chest. She assumes that the burns are due to child abuse. She asked the child, but the child does not communicate well in English, the doctor assumes he is Vietnamese. The doctor wants to let the police and Child Protective Services know about this case, but she came to the Ethics Committee and now it is up to us to make our decision. Ethical or Moral Issues Relevant in the Case: Social contract theory does apply to this case in a small variation which is explained by Kymlicka by, One approach stresses a natural equality of physical power, which makes it mutually advantageous for people to accept convections that recognize and protect each other s interests and possessions (17). This would relate to the case because the doctor is trying to protect the child. The most basic principle is Principles of Bioethics which involves four main principles, (1) respect the capacity of individuals to choose their own vision of the good life and act accordingly; (2) foster the interests and happiness of other persons and of society at large; (3) refrain from harming other persons; and (4) act fairly, distribute benefits and burdens in an equitable fashion and resolve disputes by means of fair procedures (36 37). In addition to this each poet describes a different response to isolation, Frost depicts an individual who is comfortable being isolated and makes the most of the situation which he finds himself in whereas Thomas depicts an individual who no longer wants to be isolated from others. In Man and Dog the line, I ll get no shakedown with that bedfellow from farmers , the man cuts himself off from others, he chooses his isolation. Case Study Mrs Singh has recently had major surgery and the meeting is aimed at organising a discharge package for Mrs Singh. As the MDT begin to discuss Mrs Singh. Alot of medical terminology is used. This is Jargon and Mrs And Mrs singh will be confused and unsure of what is being spoke about them also, they both speak minimal English which would be even more difficult for them to comprehend and convert into what they would recognize. On a positive note the MDT would get their own points over quicker to one another because they would all understand what is being said and decided. Although Mr. and Mrs Singh have no say and wouldn t understand because of the language and Jargon used. They would no longer feel part of the meeting and feel to agree on everything that has been spoken and decided for them. Time is very limited and the doctors need to leave very shortly, they would no longer understand what is being said and they would not be able to ask any questions as they would of felt rushed. They would not understand the decision and outcome made for them. This then led to Mrs Singh being uninterested due to all of them environmental factors which have confused her. They both nod their heads intermittently, this suggests

Whether is Facebook, Twitter, an email to your co works, or a professional document you will be judged by your writing style based on if it s good or bad. If your writingstyle full of miss spelled words, bad grammar, and horrible flow you will fail to get your point across clearly and people will think you are uneducated. This class is step one on my journey improving my writing and learning as much as possible about the English language. Just like anything else you have to start with the basics and I feel like I accomplished that over this last eight weeks. The first bad habit this class help me correct was mixing up future, past tense, and current situations in one paragraph. My papers didn t have good flow because I didn t maintain parallelism, I was just all over the place. Some of my papers read like a bad scary movie, just jumping all over the place. That can confuse the reader because the document become hard to follow. Parallelism add smooth flow to your paper, it can keep the reader eyes on your document. Additionally this method helps the writer maintain consistency, and a balanced flow of ideas. Parallelism is most important when you are trying to persuade your audience. It is a responsibility of the government to provide security to its people. To ensure that there is a reliable security to the public, the government must streamline some approaches to security threats and effectively prevent or counter them. It is a common understanding that in most of the times in our lives, we happen to interact with the people who break the law or we witness an action which supposes to be punishable by the law. Community policing gives every member of the public a role to play in ensuring their land is safe to live in. The security is accorded through the combined efforts by both the police and the members of the public. The members of the public play a role by providing/ reporting any security concern to the police, and working with them hand in hand to restore/ maintain peace in the society. Gramckow and Jacoby (1993:30) concluded that community policing is a good strategy to address the concerns and problems of communities, since it is decentralized, proactive, and deals with crime prevention and the fear of crime. Since the police stay within the community, it becomes easy for faster response in cases of emergency. Whenever the police are called upon for help, they can turn up within a short while. Positive relationship between police and members of the public It is common that police are not regarded as good people in the face of the members of the public. • 18. Background Of Method Acting Method acting has impacted many actresses and actors since the 1930 s. Method acting is a technique of acting where an actor takes a part and completes emotional identification, which is based on the system by Stanislavsky. Method acting takes a lot of devotion and emotional bravery. You have to understand the history and the development of method actingto understand the goal. If completing the method in a scene very well then the audience will feel your emotions clearly and that means you have created a emotional, truthful performance. Method acting is very important but first we have to know who created method acting. C. Stanislavsky was a Russian stage actor and director who developed the lifelike performance technique known as the Stanislavsky method or method acting. When he was 14 he joined a theatrical group that was put together by his family. Also, in the 1800 s he became a better actor and began to produce and direct plays. Stanislavsky was important figure in theater history because he trained so many actors with his method and proposed that actor training should include something more physical and vocal training. He said that if theater was going to be meaningful then it needed to move beyond what people thought the average theater performance was going to be. Stanislavsky used his method to revolutionize how we perform because actors need to use emotions to make the acting very real and so the audience can be drawn in more. His method changed acting very

He points out that both the sportsmen and wildlife protectionists have made blunders in the past regarding the welfare of wildlife, but he states that the worthiness of any cause is not measured by its clean record, but by its readiness to see the blots when they are pointed out, and to change its mind (p. 453). She then goes on to attack the claim that hunting is a sport, saying that hunting cannot be a sport because the animal has not consented to the game (p.455). She then goes on to describe the three types of hunters: the happy hunter, who hunts for psychological need, the holist hunter, who hunts for ecological need, and the holy hunter, who hunts for spiritual needs (p.456 8). Kheel disputes each hunter s reasoning. She says that the happy hunter s need and desire to hunt is immoral because it pays no consideration to the animal (p.456 7). As for the holist hunter, Kheel says that he or she overlooks the vast differences between human predation and natural predation (p. 457 8). In nature, predators prey on the weak, sick, old, and young, but human hunters prey on the fittest individuals in the ecosystem, taking out the strongest members of a species and leaving that species vulnerable (p. 458). Finally, Kheel attacks the holy hunter on the grounds that it is unethical to claim the religious beliefs from another culture to justify your actions (p.

  • 32. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night By Dylan Thomas Written by Dylan Thomas, the poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was published in 1951, two years before his early death at age 39. Referred to as a villanelle, this poem contains five three lined stanzas and one four lined stanza. In the first stanza, the unrevealed speaker is telling an unknown person not to give into death peacefully, but to fight against it as he or she expresses, rage, rage against the dying of the light (line 3). In this first stanza, Thomas uses a metaphor to compare dying of the light to death. In the next stanza, the speaker acknowledges that wise men near death know that their death is inevitable because their words had forked no lightning, but still encourages them not to give into death (4 5).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To illustrate, anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase, is identified through the repeated use of do not go gentle into that good night (1,6,12,18). Similarly, Thomas also repeats the phrase Rage, rage against the dying of the light to create the same effect (3,9,15,19). Given that the poem is a villanelle, by definition, it follows a pattern in which the first and third lines are alternated at the end of the stanzas and both repeated at the end of the last stanza. By way of repetition, Thomas seems to be emphasizing the message the lines express, which is to not die peacefully but to fight against death, showing an unwillingness to give up. The repetition and strict structure by which the poem follows also helps the poem flow and sound pleasing to the ears (euphony). Furthermore, Thomas repeats this message, but with each stanza he applies it to a new subject: wise men...good men...wild men...grave men...my father (4,7,10,13,16). Interestingly, by changing the subject, Thomas gives the impression that the message is meant for all people, no matter what they are dealing with or who they may be. In addition, Thomas uses exact rhyme to help with flow and unity between the stanzas. For example, the two repeated phrases rhyme with night and light, while the middle lines of the tercets rhyme with day and they (1 3,5 6,9,12,15,18 19). By staying true to the strict villanelle form, the five three lined stanzas follow an

The leadership style that I thought the group conformed to was the democratic style. Christy, being the leader, approached us as a group about the views that were laid out on the table, and we chose which idea that was consistent with our presentation style. Each member was allowed to express his or her opinions freely, and I had enough trust in Christy to know which idea would or wouldn t work. Another way of explaining the scale of leadership is this by comparing it to the rank of power in the American Government. Christy is president, Daniel is Vice President, Allison is the Secretary of State, and Brian is Secretary of Defense. I can t judge where I fit in there because that wouldn t be fair to me group members if I rank my self higher than what I really was. When we got together for our work sessions, as individuals we took on our roles of listeners, talkers, advisers, comedians, daydreamers, and so on. Of course the majority of the time we spent was covering the material, but at one point or another we would end up

Typically, the budget preparation process begins in mid July when budget documents and instructions are distributed by the Finance Department to the each city department. The various departments have approximately three weeks to assess any budget goals, capital and personnel requests, and to complete projections for the current fiscal year. By mid August, the Finance Department completes a preliminary review of the departments budget, personnel and capital requests. The City Administrator then meets with the Finance Director to review any requests, and schedules one on one meetings with each department head. As the first organization in Missouri to implement Priority Based Budgeting, prior to their administrative review each department head is encouraged to perform a review of programs offered by their department and to establish what programs are not meeting the results identified by the board. The purpose of this process is to allow for reallocation of resources to programs that are determined to need more funding, in place of simply incrementally increasing the departmental line item budget. Aside from simply eliminating the programs that are not achieving desired results, the directors are encouraged to develop solutions to how the identified programs may perform more efficiently. Examples include identifying programs that may be: Mandated for the city to provide, but that

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Part Timers Part Timers According to Singapore Employment (Part Time Employees) Regulations (2009), part timers are defined as employees who work for less than 35 hours a week. Advantages Using part timers can help to keep labour costs down, especially benefit cost. For instance, part timers are not entitled to flexible benefits such as dental and holiday subsidy, etc. Breaks and vacations for a part timer can be covered by another by staggering their job hours so that there are no job disruptions. Thirdly, the company may be able to attract a pool of staffs that have a wealth of knowledge from prior working experiences. For example, retirees who have relevant experience in the industry are able to serve as effective mentors to younger staff. Disadvantages... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These extra trainings incur both time and monetary costs as a more experienced full time worker may need to allocate time to serve as a mentor to the part timers. They may not possess the same level of security as full time workers as they can leave any time since they are often not bound by contract and are paid by the hour. There is a greater inclination for part timers to leave when they are offered a full time job or a job that pays a high salary. Since part timers are not entitled to the same amount of compensation and benefits as compared to full timers, it s not surprising that they have less loyalty towards their job. Casual Labour Casual employees are probably the most flexible of the three groups. Their working hours may be arranged in a non regular pattern and usually paid by the hour. Many organisations keep a file of casual employees they can contact when required.

Furthermore, the studio was trying to compete with Disney, so they stopped producing what they did best. The studio even produced a collection of shorts called Color Classics that were too similar to DisneyВґs Silly Symphonies. These films didn t contain anything that could offend the public, and some of the Color Classic shorts are exciting to watch. However, Betty BoopВґs surrealistic films left a gap. Myron Waldman declares that if the code hadn t changed Betty, the studio would eventually change into a more realistic art style instead of cute. He explains that is something is described as beautiful, it is only described as so because something beautiful shares the same meaning as the Beautiful (Phaedo, 100c). He also tells, But I simply, naively, and perhaps foolishly cling to this, that nothing else makes it beautiful other than the presence of, or the sharing in, or however you may describe its relationship to that Beautiful we mentioned, for I will not insist on the precise nature of the relationship, but that all beautiful things are beautiful by the Beautiful (Phaedo, 100d). In telling this, Socrates is saying that the beautiful does not exist by itself, but instead, it itself is Beauty. In order to make sense of Socrates s definition of Beauty, I think that one must understand the difference between the beautiful and the Beautiful. The beautiful coincides with the visible because the idea of beauty is subjective to the human viewing the beautiful object. The Beautiful corresponds with the the invisible because it is objective and perfect, and Beauty is a concept that never changes.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
