Viennese public. Thus Mozart was extremely keen when Emanuel Schikaneder
suggested that they work together on a new opera.
Schikaneder had arrived in Vienna in 1789. He managed the Theater auf der Wieden,
a theatre that specialized in popular German language musical entertainment, which

Soon after his arrival, Schikaneder had been extremely successful with the magic
opera Oberon by composer Paul Wranitzky and librettist Carl Ludwig Giesecke.
Following this success, Schikaneder decided to write the libretto to The Magic Flute,

fees for productions following the premiere. However, he later went back on his

The Magic Flute began composition in May/June and most of it was completed by

Albert Bierstadt was a painter most remembered for his dramatic and large
masterpieces that focused on extreme color and contrast, especially with lighting.
However, when it comes to his painting, Mt. Hood, Oregon, he tends to defy those
preconceived ideas. Painted in the early 1860 s, this painting is representative of
Bierstadt s earlier artwork. He uses lighter brushstrokes, a brighter and more
monochromatic color palette, and is depicting a minimalist scene in its natural state
(Figure 1). The painting is currently displayed at the Currier Museum of Art in
Manchester, NH, and while it is frequently described as small it is larger than you
think. Measuring at fifty one inches by sixty one and a quarter inches leaves the Mt.
Hood, Oregonpainting seeming small compared to his typical artworks. Due to the
smaller size of the painting, one is lead to believe that he did not have access to the
supplies or the desire to create a masterpiece of such grand scale such as The Rocky
Mountains, one of his most notable pieces. Bierstadt painted Mt. Hood, Oregonby
sketching the location on a canvas and then painting it with oil paint. When analyzing
