- #9 SUSTAINABILITY As I mentioned a few minutes ago, my topic today is environmental sustainability … The impact that it's having on our industry And how you can go about choosing a technology partner That truly is sustainable That can help you adopt more sustainable business practices And minimize your impact on the environment As we all know, climate change becomes an increasingly urgent issue Sustainability is a hot topic No pun intended

- #11 Océ takes the issue of sustainability very seriously And has for many years In today's discussion I'd like to talk a little about What sustainability is Why it matters to you as a print professional And how you can go about partnering with providers and production printing manufacturers Who are truly "green" Instead of providers Where sustainability has only recently become a part of their corporate mission How you can identify truly green providers From those who are more about green washing Than truly providing eco-friendly products
- #13 Sustainability, by nature is about the future. Sustainable business practices create a healthy balance … Between the interests of people, the planet, and profitability to nurture that future. The good news is awareness about sustainability is growing. Customers are challenging manufacturers to find better ways to protect and preserve resources Environmentally conscious companies are looking for ways to balance what is good for business With what is good for the environment More companies are realizing that green business is good business And are stepping up efforts to do business in a more sustainable way CHANGE AND OPPORTUNITY The point is, we're witnessing a sea change in the way companies manufacture technology And the way customers use that technology to produce documents in a more eco-friendly way This is an encouraging change One that introduces both challenges and opportunities … It shines a spotlight on the importance of doing business in an environmentally responsible way As a result, the marketplace is undergoing a transformation
- #15 So what is this thing we call environmental sustainability? I think everyone in this room has a good idea. It centers on the notion that each of us has a responsibility to future generations to reduce our carbon footprint today.
- #16 A universal definition of sustainability hasn't been established But the World Commission on Environment and Development has come up with a pretty good one, in my opinion That definition goes something like this… Sustainability is "development that meets the needs of the present … without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." This issue is reaching critical mass for several reasons As we all know climate change can have potentially devastating implications In terms of the well-being of the planet and the people on it Not to mention the economic impact
- #17 Do people care? Yes, the public really does care and is favorably disposed to purchase products that are sustainable In fact, more and more companies are seeking out companies that can prove they are sustainable Some won't even do business with a partner that doesn't employ sustainable practices
- #18 For example, Wal-Mart has made its commitment to going green very public It's making its stores more environmentally friendly And stocking more sustainable products on its shelves
- #19 But the biggest impact of the mega-chain's focus on the environment Is the change it's creating in its global supply chain
- #20 As part of its green initiative Wal-Mart has set three ambitious goals To be 100 percent supplied by renewable energy To create zero-waste And to sell sustainable products
- #21 The company's CEO recently announced that the company will require its 60,000 suppliers to reduce the amount of packaging they use And to optimize their supply chain practices to be more sustainable Wal-Mart is encouraging suppliers to use product ingredients that are less harmful to human and environmental health By adopting these types of policies and purchasing according to environmental principles Wal-Mart will spread its green philosophy around the globe.
- #22 My point is that this green movement is not a passing fad that's going to go away It's here to stay … and it's going to cause all of us to take a closer look at how we're doing business To find ways to do business in a more sustainable way Because soon being sustainable will not just be a nice value-added bonus … It will become the price of entry for doing business Because just as Wal-Mart is demanding evidence of more sustainable practices In the coming years, more and more companies will require the same before they will agree to do business with a supplier
- #24 In our particular industry, doing business in a sustainable way Means answering some hard questions … In a world facing climate change, how does the print industry supply chain reduce its carbon footprint? What new substrates … inks … and technologies are being brought to market to address the goal of going green?
- #25 Are you printing locally so that you don't have to ship across the country or around the world? Using a distribute and print methodology minimizes the use of fossil fuels and petrochemicals for energy … And it's a best practice that's starting to catch on.
- #26 What about paper? According to some estimates 20 to 30 million trees are harvested each year for paper and paper products That's not small change
- #27 So we have to ask ourselves … Are we doing what we can to use paper with recycled content? You know, there are companies out there producing 100 percent post-consumer paper That's of the same quality or near the quality of virgin paper
- #28 What about the chain of custody for the paper you print on? Do you know where your paper came from? Did it come from a Sustainable Forestry Initiative certified provider? Or did it come from endangered forests? And if it came from a renewable forest …
- #29 What type of carbon footprint was created in its milling and transportation? Do you know if the paper manufacturer is working on reducing those footprints as well? Because you really have to consider the entire chain of custody There are many paper mills that are taking serious steps to reduce environmental impact And doing an outstanding job Rather than run their boilers on natural gas or oil, some are converting to biomass fuels to power their boilers Some use biofuels … others burn slash Slash is what's left behind after trees are gathered … It has to be harvested and pulled out of the ground before the forests can be replanted There are economical ways to capture that material and use it to power furnaces Something to think about…
- #30 Here's something else … Let's think about shipping … What about those cartons we use to ship products and printed documents … Are we using cartons made from 100 percent post consumer waste … Or at least a significant amount of recycled fiber?
- #31 What about the digital printers you use to generate documents every day? Are they energy efficient? Do they use green components? Are they designed for re-use and recycling? What about the company that manufactures them? Is that company doing business in a sustainable way? Are they designing products to be eco-friendly from the start? These questions present a challenge to rethink equipment, production and who your suppliers are Because everything you do has a carbon footprint Doing business in a sustainable way can minimize that footprint What's really interesting is that it can also offer new business opportunities The good news is there are some outstanding and creative things going on in the print industry for building sustainable workflows And we're going to talk about some of them today
- #33 IT ISN'T HARD BEING GREEN So how do you determine if a potential supplier really is green? It's actually easier than you think
- #34 How many of you remember Kermit the frog from Sesame Street? I think his famous line was "It's not easy being green." It isn't easy. But it isn't hard either.
- #35 One of the simplest ways to improve your carbon footprint Is to seek out and engage sustainable business partners.
- #36 How do you know if a potential vendor is green? There are certain markers you can look for. Look for a history of sustainable business practices … not something that magically appeared in the last few months Look for a documented commitment to recycling … Programs that give parts and products a "second or even third life" Look for energy-efficient engineering And a forward-looking approach to waste and emissions handling Consider potential business partners who can demonstrate compliance with rigorous sustainability regulations and requirements And of course, any awards that recognize the company for responsible business practices Are a good sign that you're dealing with a legitimate, truly green provider
- #37 So practically speaking … how do you choose the right partner and the right technology to go green?
- #38 Sustainability is about the future, right? So if you want to see if a company really is concerned about that future … One of the first things you're going to do … ironically … Is look at its past Is sustainability something that has just recently become a part of the company's mission? Or is it part of the company's DNA? Has the company employed eco-friendly business practices … before it was fashionable to do so? Look for a technology partner that has taken steps to reduce the use of toxic materials Because if there aren't any toxic materials … there aren't any toxins going into our landfills Look for a potential partner that designs sustainability into new products Where sustainability is an integral part of its innovation pipeline And by all means, choose a partner that reduces, recycles and re-uses materials Ask if they have sustainable processes for handling waste and emissions and transporting materials And ask for evidence that sustainability is being incorporated into strategic planning cycles
- #39 REUSE AND RECYCLING Let's talk about re-use and recycling It's not the only component of sustainability But it's a very important pillar of a wider program of environmentally responsible business practices
- #40 While many companies continue to send used machines to landfills because their focus is on selling machines today Truly sustainable companies create products with components that can be recycled. They support recycling in their manufacturing and routine business practices And they have remanufacturing programs that prevent used equipment from entering the waste stream Recovering parts and materials for re-use or recycling reduces consumption of new materials and parts Not to mention the waste that's an integral part of manufacturing new materials If you're looking for a vendor that's committed to reuse and recycling … Here are some simple questions you can ask… Do you have a remanufacturing policy? Are products and component materials engineered to be re-used in new systems? How are machines handled at the end of their economic life? Are components reclaimed, recycled, or remanufactured … or are they sent to a landfill? Do components stay in play … or are they discarded as waste? For example, Océ gives many of its products a second or third life in the company's Asset Recovery facilities Then, they're placed on the market again to minimize waste.
- #41 HOW DOES THE COMPANY DO BUSINESS There's more to going green than recycling If it were that easy, we wouldn't have a problem So it's important to find out how a company does business Do some investigative work How do they do business? Are their manufacturing plants green? Are they "walking the talk" in the way they manufacture products
- #42 Do they use alternative fuels to power their plants? Are their production facilities ISO 14001 certified? Do they keep packaging to a minimum? Do they use recyclable materials whenever possible? Do they use environmentally friendly methods to heat and cool their buildings? Do they meet rigorous standards for quality and environmental responsibility? What about logistics … how do they move parts or equipment from point A to point B? Have they adapted processes to support an environmental program? Are they powering truck fleets with alternative fuels? Are they using carbon-neutral biomass fuels to power production plants? Are they working to reduce emissions?
- #43 Case in point, Océ does not produce any toxic waste, does not use CFCs, halons, or substances that deplete the ozone layer in manufacturing. And has set up a dedicated asset recovery department that organizes the flow of returned goods Océ keeps packaging to an absolute minimum Re-usable pallets and containers are delivered to Océ through a carefully constructed network that minimizes handling, pallets, and packaging Look for a company that is working to minimize packaging And uses recyclable materials whenever possible.
- #44 ENERGY EFFICIENCY Then there's the issue of energy efficiency
- #45 Especially when you consider the greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning natural gas and other fuels. Sustainable companies use green or renewable energy sources for heating, cooling, and production And they're looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency. As for the product you're thinking about buying How do you know if it's energy efficient too? Because certainly there will be customers asking all of these same questions of you. If you want a printer that's energy-efficient, there's a dead giveaway that it passes the test … The ENERGY STAR emblem. ENERGY STAR is a US government-backed program That was created by the Environmental Protection Agency to help businesses and individuals protect the environment You can bet that any product with the ENERGY STAR logo has met tough guidelines for energy efficiency.
- #46 Here's a big one RoHs compliance
- #47 It's an area of environmental protection where Europe is well ahead of the United States However, RoHs is capturing attention here in the U.S. RoHs regulations are started to be enacted in certain states. What is RoHs compliance? RoHs stands for the restriction of the use of certain Hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment It is a directive that prevents manufacturers from bringing products to market in Europe I'm talking about products that contain more than agreed-upon levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and two types of flame retardants RoHs went into effect in Europe in July 2006 It went into effect in California in January 2007 And state rules aimed at restricting mercury have been enacted in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington Stay tuned for more activity in this area in the months and years ahead The intent of RoHs is to solve the problem of large amounts of toxic electronics-related waste As RoHs generates increasing attention It's important to have a product that is RoHs certified As part of an ongoing effort to develop, manufacture and sell products that minimize environmental burden …
- #48 Océ has proactively eliminated many of the substances restricted under the RoHs directive since 1993 And Océ continues to increase these efforts We require our suppliers to supply only products and components that are RoHs compliant. We have redesigned parts and sub-assemblies to eliminate restricted substances And have even gone beyond the RoHs directive by voluntarily adopting new requirements even for products that fall outside the scope of the directive As a result, all Océ products sold after July 1st 2006 fully comply with the provisions of the RoHs directive
- #49 Waste handling and emissions What about waste handling and emissions? This is essential to being a sustainable business partner Waste handling comes in three basic flavors… Hazardous chemicals… Industrial waste such as paper, metals and packaging And domestic waste Most industrial waste can be recycled, so look for a company that recycles and reuses these components Be sure to look for a partner that designs photoconductors and consumables to last longer to reduce waste.
- #50 Toner Emissions Then there's the issue of emissions The main culprits are ozone, dust, and toner emissions Controlling these emissions … along with noise emissions … should be a key initiative for any eco-responsible company. The issue of particle emissions from toner-based products or laser printers is one that has recently generated attention around the world. Information has been issued indicating that laser printers produce dust emissions and ultra-fine particles. When it comes to these emissions, not all printer vendors are created equal. Therefore, it pays to check this out … Look for a vendor that sets and adheres to strict technical standards And continuously updates them to include the latest developments in materials, substances, and ergonomics. Emissions standards should take into account current legislation, regulations and industry standards In many cases, you can find vendors whose standards are even stricter than the official regulations.
- #51 For example, Océ products comply with relevant safety laws and standards Do not expose users to any known health risks when operated correctly Have been tested by independent expert institutes And come with adequate health, safety, and environmental information including Product Safety Data Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets on consumables and supplies.

- #53 For example, the UN Global Compact encourages a precautionary approach to environmental challenges It promotes greater environmental responsibility And on the development of environmentally friendly technologies through research, innovation, and self-regulation.
- #54 Likewise, ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that a company has met one of the world's most respected standards for environmental responsibility. Compliance with any of these directives indicates a commitment to sound environmental practices.
- #55 SUSTAINABILTY BEGINS WITH R&D Say you've determined that a potential business partner employs environmentally sustainable business practices The company supports recycling Manufactures products that are energy-efficient And that minimize emissions.
- #56 What about the future? Truly sustainable companies design products based on an awareness of the environment from the earliest stages of development Truly sustainable companies design sustainability right into their products from the start. Look for products that have short paper paths to reduce misfeeds and jams – which saves energy and reduces waste Look for systems that don't need developer or fuser oil, which minimizes toner residue Look for duplex printing systems that cut paper usage in half And make economic use of paper, toner, and energy The point is, look for products that are designed for sustainability right from the start And while you're at it, look for products that are designed by companies that are sustainable from the start themselves

- #59 From the way we use and re-use components, energy, and water consumption to waste-handling and emissions To human and environmental safety Océ is committed to reducing ozone, dust and toner emissions Océ has remanufactured and reused components for decades And we've adapted all of our logistics processes to support a sustainable environmental program Because of the high quality of our materials and engineering, many of our components can be re-used in new systems, minimizing environmental impact Many of our products have received Germany's Blue Angel award This award is given to products that meet a high standard of performance for efficient energy consumption, use of recycled paper and recyclable materials And that meet strict regulations for emissions. - #61 The Océ VarioPrint 6000 family was designed to minimize environmental impact in every aspect of operation They use mono-component toner and an organic photoconductor Self-developing toner uses no developer and no silicon fuser oil Which means less mess, no toner residues And energy-saving low-temperature fusing And because the systems transfers toner by direct press The system uses 100 percent of toner So there's no toner waste No need for an internal cleaning system And no toner waste bottle Imagine that!
- #62 The Océ VarioPrint 6000 platform doesn't use solvents in its toner So there's no need for the sophisticated air filters or specially ventilated work areas that other systems require What's more, ozone emissions are lower Because there are only two coronas compared to four or eight in traditional xerographic printers In fact, the ozone levels for Océ VarioPrint 6000 systems are consistently below the threshold of human detection That's a much more rigorous criterion that those specified by standards and regulation In fact, under real test conditions, Océ VarioPrint 6000 ozone emissions are as low as eight percent of those specified by the manufacturers of other market-leading systems And because these systems image both sides of the page in a single pass, they use far less energy … An estimated 45 percent less than conventional dual-pass systems Which makes them nearly twice as energy-efficient as any other printer in their class … Power consumption is 35 percent lower than minimum Energy Star requirements.
