Green Business
1. INTRODUCTION
A business functioning in a capacity where no negative impact is made on the
local or global environment, the community, or the economy. A green business
will also engage in forward-thinking policies for environmental concerns and
policies affecting human rights. Sustainable business, or green business, is an
enterprise that has minimal negative impact on the global or local environment,
community, society, or economy. People are researching on the business from
where they can get more profit with caring the environment and preserving
natural resources. In contrary, the environmentalists are blaming these
innovative business ideas for the deteriorating environmental conditions. So, in
the present context developing the ideas for establishing the eco-friendly and
sustainable business is the most important.
What is green business?
The concept “green business” is composed of two elements – “green” and
“business”. As all business, green business is about making money. But “green”
means doing so while sustainably harnessing opportunities that nature holds,
and without harming the environment.
Businesses depend on the environment to access different inputs, such as land,
energy, or water. In instances where natural disasters, pollution, climate change
and resource depletion are experienced, businesses are negatively affected. On
the one hand, going green has thus become a necessity for running a successful
and sustainable business
2. In general, business is described as green if it matches the following four
criteria:
1. It incorporates principles of sustainability into each of its business decisions.
2. It supplies environmentally friendly products or services that replaces demand for no
green products and/or services.
3. It is greener than traditional competition.
4. It has made an enduring commitment to environmental principles in its business
operations.
Need of green business?
Our daily business activities can have a negative effect on the environment
through air and water pollution, the disposal of waste, or the overuse of natural
resources, among others. At the same time, businesses depend on the
environment to access different inputs, such as land, energy, or water. In
instances where natural disasters, pollution, climate change and resource
depletion are experienced, businesses are negatively affected. On the one hand,
going green has thus become a necessity for running a successful and
sustainable business, rather than an option. On the other hand, businesses are
also uniquely placed to contribute positively to the environment.
• Access to markets, as clients increasingly demand
environmentallyfriendlyproducts because of increased eco-
awareness, but also because of health reasons (greater
safety of non-toxic products) or financial reasons (lower
operatingcost).
• Cost savings, as water, energy and other billsgo
downandasresource-usebecomes more efficient.
• Access to support, both financial and non-financial, as
governments place in- creasingly high importance on
environ- mental considerations.
• Higher productivity due to a healthier workforce
whoseabilitytoworkisnotcom- promised by health
hazards such as toxins in the workplace.
• A healthier surrounding environment in which the resources
needed by the busi- nessnowandin thefuturearepreserve.
EXAMPLES OF THE BENEFITS OF A
GREEN BUSINESS:
3. TESLA INDUSTRY
Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to
sustainable energy.
More than 1B people worldwide do not have access to
electricity, and many that do get their electricity from
polluting sources such as coal or fossil fuels. Tesla is
bringing sustainable and affordable energy solutions to
communities around the world
4. To create an entiresustainable energy ecosystem, Tesla also manufactures a unique set of
energy products that enable homeowners, businesses and utilities to produce and manage
renewable energy generation, storage and consumption. Homeowners can install solar
panels or Solar Roof to power their home using 100% renewable energy and store that
energy in Power wall, which makes electricity available during peak energy-use periods to
help them save money and provides power during grid outages. Meanwhile, utilities and
businesses can use Power pack – an infinitely scalable energy storage system that provides
greater control, efficiency and reliability across the electric grid.
ELIMINATING NATURALGAS LINES: MAXIMIZING HEAT RECOVERY-
One unique aspect of Satisfactory 1 is that there is no natural gas line within the factory.
Tesla made this decision at the design stage because we wanted a sustainable-powered
facilitywith no on-site combustion of fossil fuels.
BRINGING THE OUTSIDEIN: OURNATURAL AIR SYSTEM-
Several battery manufacturing areas throughout the facility require very low levels of
humidity during production, and creating dry areas for these areas and can be costly and
require lot of energy. Tesla was able to turn to nature itself and pull in outside air that
starts with much less moisture.
5. Legal environment and business laws related
to green business practices
Small business owners facing potential violations with environmental laws
should research these matters before the event ends in disaster. This
requires a forewarning in environmental law and keeping with federal
regulations by knowing what rules apply to the situations with the
company such as waste management and treatment of employees
Environmental Violations
There are numerous violations that may occur when the company is
not aware of which laws pertain to the state and what federal
regulations are necessary.
Clean Air and Water Acts
Clean air affects the possibility of air pollution. While this usually
involves cars and emissions, the pollution emitted from a company
building could contain extensive contaminants for the local
environment airways. When the Environmental Protection Agency
becomes involved in these circumstances, violations may cause fines
and other penalties to the companies. Water contaminants are
dangerous to the local population and may lead to numerous injuries.
When any pollutants enter the public drinkable water sources, the
company or person may face extensive fines and possible
incarceration.
Endangered Species Regulation
When a company builds on land, the owner must ensure there are no
endangered species in the area. The EPA may become involved if the
business harms the environment to the point that there are issues with
extinction of the animal.
6. National Environmental Policy Explained
The NEPA or National Environmental Policy Act requires
governmental agencies to ensure that the environment research
completes for the location before any federal action occurs.
Occupational Safety & Health Explained
The Occupational Safety and Health Actor OSHA requires companies
to ensure proper safety procedures exist within the company.
Legal Help in Federal Environmental Laws
It is necessary to hire a lawyer to ensure the environmental laws of the
United States are not violated by a company. The lawyer may protect
the business from penalties and make sure that the owner is aware of
these regulations.
GREEN BUSINESS STRATERGIES
The continued depletion of natural resources has led corporations that have large
energy requirements to become more environmentally aware than ever. This is
because not only do green initiatives save on costs, reuse resources and meet
compliance requirements, but they also help to create brand recognition among
customers.
7. FOR EXAMPLE
Tesla believes that the success of our company and society depends on enabling diverse
businesses to share and grow in the global market.
THE PERFECT SYSTEM: DESIGNING FOR SOLAR
Tesla designed the Satisfactory 1 roof with a white reflective surface and no
obstructions, so that it is a perfect fit for solar panels. Designed to be a net-zero energy
facility upon completion.
COLD DESERT NIGHTS: THERMAL WATER STORAGE
To reduce the economic and energy costs of generating this chilled water, Tesla designed
and built a one-of-a-kind chilled water plant precisely tuned to take advantage of the vast
daily temperature swings and dry desert air by equipping Gigafactory 1 with a 10M gallon
concrete thermal energy storage reservoir.
This improved design is expected to reduce the factory’s chilled water electrical consumption
by as much as 40% and water consumption up to 60%, pushing Gigafactory 1 toward its net-
zero emissions goals.
ZERO WASTE: SOLVENT RECOVERY SYSTEM
Tesla developed a custom heat pumping system to minimize total energy consumption.
Waste heat that is usually sent to a cooling tower is instead captured as recovered heat. The
implementation of this closed-loop steam-water vapor compression heat pump system
resulted in an approximately 85% reduction in energy consumption when compared to a
standard system.
CONFL I CT M I NERALS
Tesla has a zero-tolerance policy towards human rights abuses in
our supply chain. Many Tesla products, like most electronics, contain minerals such as tin,
tungsten, tantalum and gold, often referred to as “3TG”.
8. List of Companies that Have Great Environmental Initiatives
1. Ford Motor Company
Automotive companies are known to be among the heaviest polluters. However, Ford Motor
Company is changing this narrative through their ten-part environmental policy that they
have implemented for years. The company uses sustainable fabrics in its vehicles while 80%
of both its Focus and Escape vehicles are recyclable. The company also focuses on fuel
efficiency, particularly on the six-speed transmission, offering a clean diesel heavy duty
pickup truck.

10. CONCLUSION
The concept of green business is so broad that it is very hard
to include in a thesis of certain pages. But as vast the concept
is its importance is far more important. In fact, a business
implementing the green business policy can always sustain
and have the profitable growth. From this thesis, author has
ac-quired the knowledge regarding the green business, green
product development and its market possibilities. In
conclusion, it could be said that new entrepreneurs going to
establish new production companies should adopt the green
product policy so they could maintain their profitability and
sustainability in the market among the consumer. Doing
business using renewable energy sources is always profitable
and helps to earn green gold. The production of the recycled
and green products should be encouraged in order preserve
the environment.
