OCCUPATIONAL
HEALTH AND
SAFETY
INTRODUCTION
In any field, we prioritize the health and safety of the people within the workplace.
Without any standards and precautions, this will result to a lot of incidents that may
harm people and in the worst case scenario, die in an unfortunate event. Having
Occupational Health and Safety Standards help us avoid most of the problems that
we will face in our workplace.
If you would notice most technological fields have these standards
which we are compelled to follow.
 OHS Standards refers to the rules, policies, legislation, procedures,
and activities that are geared towards protecting the health and
welfare of all the people in our working environment. Specially in
this course, we should follow the common safe practices in
computer servicing and installation.
 There are a lot of things that we don’t know and did not follow
even in holding or handling devices around us. Here are common
practices on when we are installing and servicing computers.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS
COMMON OHS PRACTICES
Don’t Work Alone. This is applicable to all workplaces. Having
someone watching you and taking care of you will be beneficial
specially when your work involves electricity, mechanical equipment,
power tools, and even chemicals. Someone should always be there to
to help you in case of emergency.
Common OHS Practices
Turn off the device before working on it. This is the most obvious one but most
people won’t follow this and simply forget. Being confident in what we do
sometimes leads us to a sparkling pain. Before working on any electrical device,
remember to plug it off or let it discharge before handling the device. Also use
PPEs but more on that later.
Take away any
liquids. Whether
this will be water,
aerosols, coffee, etc.
don’t let any liquid
get close to an
electrical device.
Liquids are highly
conductive and will
cause some parts of
the device to short
circuit.
Like liquids, Tools can be conductive. Some tools are conductive
as well and can cause short circuit. Be careful in using tools because
most of it is made out of metal and they are conductive as well
 Discharge yourself/ Ground yourself. Most people would think that this will
cause you pain and electric shock because of the word “ground” in it, but this
is an easy step to accomplish. Most of the system units have a metal casing
that we can use to discharge ourselves. This helps us disperse the electric
charge building up in our bodies. Also remember to wear shoes.
Don’t be forceful.
Sometimes we have a lot
of screws, bolts, and nuts
in out device and when
we assemble and
disassemble them it
might get confusing to
put it back together
since those are not
labelled. If it doesn’t fit,
don’t force it, but if it’s in
the right place, don’t
screw them too tightly
Clean- Clean the area
before and after using
it. Cleaning before
using the area will
assure you that dust or
anything will not be in
contact with your
components. Cleaning
after will help you see if
there are any
components left behind
behind and makes your
service better.
Hold components
appropriately. Most of
the parts of the system
unit is exposed and the
pcbs are sensitive to
conductance like the
motherboard, RAM, and
CPU. We have to hold or
handle these
components carefully.
People would hold these
on the edges and
carefully not touch the
integrated circuits. Some
people would use gloves
to hold these
components
Always Wear Personal Protective Equipment. Most of you might have seen
PPEs around hospitals and energy plants. People are required to use this
equipment to assure the safety of the technician/ worker. These might include;
gloves, masks, helmets, lab coats, earplugs, and many more
Make sure the pins are aligned properly-
Most of the components are connected
pins which are mostly made with a sort of
metal that connects each component
together. Some components have specific
number of pins and they are not that
strong. Pins can bend when given enough
force. So be careful. Check if the
component that you will plug has the
appropriate number of pins and also if
they align to the connector properly.
Contingency measures
during workplace
accidents. We should
expect the worst in most
of situations to generate
plans that will guarantee
safety without
compromising the work.
Having plans to execute
when there is a problem
or accident will always
lessen the damages. We
should consider many
types of emergencies as
well.
 Clean the components properly.
We have to use proper equipment to
clean our components. Commonly it
is advised to bring a brush in
servicing a computer to clean the
edges of each components but
sometimes the fibers get left behind
when the cleaning process is done.
Some people use compressed air or
a blower to clean a computer system.
And Don’t Blow Air Using Your
Mouth!
1. What are some potential hazards you've identified in our workplace?
2. What steps do you take when working around potential hazards?
3. What's one way that management can help you prevent injury?
USING THE RIGHT TOOLS
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE TOOLS (ESD)
Hand Tools – the
tools in computer
assembly are
commonly small
hand tools. They are
individually or
packaged in a
computer repair kit.
These vary in sizes,
quality, and price.
CLEANING TOOLS.
Diagnostic Tools
We should also have tools that will help us configure and test components to predict issues before
application or before we turn on the computer. With these tools we can test the network connection, visua
output, and voltage and current of the motherboard/ components.
A power supply tester is an electronic device used to
test how well a computer power supply is functioning.
This type of testing is often performed as part of
maintenance on a computer and can be used to try to
determine the source of a computer problem.
A network cable tester is an electronic device that
measures the conductive between two ends of a
cable. It also checks and measures signal for correct
wiring.
Toner probe: The toner part is connected to a cable at
one end using specific adapters, such as an RJ-45,
coaxial, or metal clips. The toner generates a tone that
travels the length of the cable. The probe part traces the
cable. When the probe is in near proximity to the cable to
which the toner is attached, the tone can be heard through
a speaker in the probe.
Loopback adapter: is also called a loopback
plug, tests the basic functionality of computer
ports. The adapter is specific to the port that
you want to test.
