What grunt?

Abstract: Node-RED is often used as a protyping tool for IoT systems. However, there are also a large number of OSGi components that have already been built to interface to devices, sensors and systems. In this talk I will show how two completely different runtime environments (OSGi and Node-RED) can be combined into a single platform for prototyping (and more) combining the strengths of both languages and systems.
Being able to quickly and simply prototype IoT application is extremely useful, and to this end many people have adopted Node-Red, a Node.js based runtime with extensive support for plugins to interface to various IoT hardware and protocols. However, this requires these services/protocols to be developed in Javascript, and there is already a significant body of code developed in Java/OSGi that it would be desirable to re-use.
The talk will explain how it is possible to:
Create and manage a Node-Red runtime from within an OSGi bundle
Share OSGi components and object into the Node-Red runtime
Interact and build Node-Red flows that exchange data and call methods between Node.js and OSGi
This is obviously useful for the original purpose: prototyping IoT systems, but also demonstrates some interesting techniques for bridging between different languages and runtimes.

GlassFish OSGi - Java2days 2010
GlassFish provides a modular and extensible Java EE application server runtime based on OSGi. Carbon and OSGi Deep Dive
Carbon is a server building framework that offers a modular platform for building enterprise middleware products like those from WSO2. It is built on top of OSGi and Equinox P2, providing components, services, dynamic modularity, and other key features. Carbon bundles all code into reusable modules, allows dynamic installation/uninstallation of bundles, and facilitates component-based architecture. Products built on Carbon, like WSO2's, are comprised of logically grouped and provisionable features.
OSGi
OSGi is a module system and service platform for Java that provides dynamic module capabilities. It addresses issues with traditional Java applications like lack of portability, software complexity and size, and limits on object oriented technologies. OSGi allows applications to be constructed as a set of reusable modules (bundles) that can be dynamically installed, started, stopped, updated, and uninstalled without requiring a reboot. It uses a publish/find/bind model where bundles export and import packages and can discover and bind to services from other bundles at runtime.

OSGi is steadily penetrating the Enterprise Java space, explaiting the complete lack of modularity in the Java EE specification. As this was introduced as a gap already at the time of Java EE 5 and still not addressed 6 years later - it's natural that alternative solutions will fill the gap.
At the same time - Java EE servers themselves decided to leverage OSGi to manage their own infrastructure. The session outlined the major Java EE Web Profile certified servers and validated the extent to which they expose OSGi to Java EE applications.

Many people are drawn into OSGi because it provides class loaders on steroids, however, one of the often overlooked feature of OSGi is the Service Registry and the (µ)service model. µServices provide a much more powerful alternative to the traditional Java factories and listeners in your code or xml, which are the usual culprits for class loading headaches. Alas, you need to migrate your application to OSGi first in order to take advantage of µServices which would make it so much easier to migrate your application to OSGi in the first place. The idea of PojoSR (a.k.a OSGi Lite) is to remedy this situation by providing OSGi without the module layer. PojoSR is based on Apache Felix and runs in any standard Java environment: from the class path, inside a WAR, wherever your current Java runs because it never touches a class loader. It allows any application built in Java to reap the benefits of service-based modularity without first having to rid existing code of any class loader tricks. This approach also allows, many existing bundles work out of the box - just by adding them to the class path (PojoSR will detect bundles on the class path and execute their activators). It works so well that OSGi is thinking of standardizing this approach. This talk will show you how you can take advantage of µServices using PojoSR and present some examples where µServices and PojoSR wore used to modularize and OSGi'fy an existing application.

In 2010, Nuxeo launched Nuxeo Studio, a hosted software application delivered over the cloud, allowing configuration and customization of applications based on the Open Source Nuxeo Enterprise Platform. This application is a cornerstone of Nuxeo's Customization as a Service strategy.
This talk will take an in-depth look at the making of this large scale ajax-based application and how we industrialized it. The application leverages OSGi and the extension point system, upon which the Nuxeo Enterprise Platform is built, to offer a great customization experience to developers. An Eclipse IDE plugin is currently in development and future plans include Eclipse Orion integration to provide a code and template editor online.
Nuxeo Studio is approximately 100,000 lines of Java code for GWT. GWT expedited the process by providing rich user interface snippets, a relatively painless learning curve, and development tools that integrate with Eclipse such as the Google Eclipse Plugin, which reduced the time for coding and testing cycles. About Bogdan: Bogdan Stefanescu is the lead architect of core runtime and platform technologies at Nuxeo. He has architected the core runtime and service model found in Nuxeo EP, based on OSGi and an extension point model. Current projects cover both server-side and client-side frameworks, from integrating Nuxeo with Virgo to integrating GWT front-ends within modular OSGi-like frameworks or providing Eclipse-based tooling for Nuxeo developers. He enjoys designing highly modular frameworks, RESTful approaches, and still counts CPU cycles when coding.

Mariano Gonzalez and Rob Mills presented on achieving zero downtime with OSGi and microservices architectures. They discussed how OSGi bundles can be deployed as microservices and how OSGi implementations like Apache Karaf support dynamic updating. However, OSGi alone does not provide high availability features. They demonstrated how Cellar clustering adds redundancy to Karaf and how using Kafka as an asynchronous messaging middleware between microservices allows services to remain available even if the Karaf instance or Kafka broker goes down. Topics included OSGi lifecycles, microservice patterns, high availability concepts, the Cellar demo, and integrating Kafka for asynchronous communication between redundant microservices.

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.

Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

What Does “OSGi Ready” Mean? ● Deliverable as a set of OSGi bundles. ● Able to run in an OSGi framework. ● What is an OSGi bundle? ● A JAR with a valid OSGi manifest – So that a bundle can be started by an OSGi framework. – So that it may register a Bundle Activator to be notified about bundle activation and be able to interact with the framework. ● Having all its transitive dependencies OSGi enabled. 3 ● It is not enough to provide a valid manifest:

Why us e OSGi? ● Because we need a module life cycle. ● Nuxeo Runtime, which is also an OSGi Bundle, uses the OSGi model to register extension points and to contribute extensions. ● Because it is the only Java framework to provide the features we need. ● Do we use all the features proposed by OSGi? ● No. For now we are only using the life cycle model. But OSGi also provides a service model. 4
- 5. Nuxeo fully OSGi one day? ● I hope so. But there are many things to do. ● Fix bundles not already OSGi ready. ● Maintain a fully Nuxeo OSGi distribution. ● We must change the way of developing at Nuxeo – either use Eclipse tooling or maintain Manifests by hand – we need more discipline when programming ● We must change our artifact repositories – this means changing all the poms at Nuxeo. – This means maintaining an OSGi bundle repository 5 accessible from maven – and align all other
