INTRODUCTION
A conversation between Appu & his grandmother who went to see the science exhibition is given below.
Grandma, look at this picture. These people have staring eyes, lean legs & protruding belly. What is it?
Appu
It is because they are malnourished & lack nutrients in diet.
Grandma
Did you notice the above conversation? What according to the grandmother is the reason for various diseases? So today we shall discuss about malnutrition, nutritional deficiencies & their symptoms etc.
Discussion points
1. What are the diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies?
2. Which disease is caused by the deficiency of iodine? What are its symptoms? How can we prevent it?
3. What is marasmus? What are its symptoms?
4. What is rickets?
5. What are its symptoms?
6. What are the remedial measures for ricket?
1. Goitre, kwashiorkor, marasmus, rickets.
2. Goitre, enlargement of thyroid gland. Use of iodized salt & leafy vegetables.
3. Protein deficiency disease. Lean body, projected ribs, sunken eyes, dry skin
4. Vit D deficiency disease.
5.Bent limbs, decayed teeth & joint pain.
6. Prevented by using vitamin D rich food, like carrot, leafy vegetables, fish.
CONSOLIDATION
1. Goitre, kwashiorkor, marasmus & rickets are the various nutritional deficiency diseases.
2. Goitre is caused by deficiency of iodine. Symptom is thyroid gland swelling. Consuming fish & iodized salt..etc can prevent it.
3. Protein deficiency causes kwashiorkor in children. Symptoms are protruding stomach, projected eyes, oedema on legs. It can be avoided by consuming protein rich food.
4. Lack of protein & energy in diet causes marasmus in adult. Symptoms are lean body, projected ribs, sunken eyes, dry skin.
ACTIVITY 2
Now you have understood about malnutrition & nutritional deficiency diseases. Lets have a role play
Goitre
I am goiter. I am born out of iodine deficiency in people. Identify me by the enlargement of thyroid gland. You can avoid me by consuming foods containing iodine, such as fish, leafy vegetables..etc
Kwashirokor
I am Kwashiorkor. I am found in children with protein deficiency such children develop stunted growth, mental retardation, protruding stomach, projected eyes & oedema on lungs. Eating protein rich food like milk, egg, meat, pulses etc can prevent me.
Marasmus
I am marasmus. I am found in adults with protein & energy deficiencies. People whom I am found will have lean body, projected ribs, sunken eyes, oily skin..etc. You can prevent me by consuming protein rich diet.
Rickets
I am rickets. I am found in children too. I am borne out of Vit D deficiency. My symptoms are bent limbs, decayed teeth & joint pain. You can avoid by having carrot, leafy vegetables..etc
Students conduct role ply on nutritional deficiencies.
REVIEW
QUESTIONS
1. What are the nutritional deficiency diseases?
2. What are the different diseases caused by
nutrition deficiency?
3. What is goiter? What are the symptoms & prevention?
4. Name the disease caused by protein deficiency in adult?
5. What are the symptoms of marasmus?
6. What are rickets?
ACTIVITY
Make a chart showing nutritional deficiency diseases, their symptoms & preventive measures.
FOLLOW-UP-ACTIVITY
Collect more data on other nutrition deficiency diseases, their causes, symptoms & preventive measures.
