NURSING STANDARDS
1.Standard are established rules or a basis
of comparison in measuring or judging
capacity ,quantity, context and value of
objects in the same category.
2.It is a commanding statement that frames
the legal and professional base for nursing
standards.
PURPOSE OF SETTING STANDARDS FOR
NURSING PRACTICE
1.To regularize and formulate bedside care.
2.To improve and upgrade the professional
nursing care.
3.To promote the good appraisal of the
provision of nursing care.
4.To determine patient satisfaction about
the nursing care.
5.T
o act as a guideline for nurse researcher
to evaluate the relationship between the
provision of nursing care and extent of
output in patient care.
6.To provide proper direction for the nurse
administrators to improve their skill and
efficiency in providing ethical nursing care
within the health agencies.
7.To provide direction for the nurse educators
in developing the goals of educational
programs.
8.To provide basic conceptual structure for
framing the specialty nursing standards.
9.To show the congruence in the important
roles of nurses and nursing care practices within
the health care team.
CHARACTERISTICS OF STANDARDS
1.They must be realistic, attainable
and acceptable.
2.They must be wide enough to apply to a
range of settings.
3.They must in positive terms narrate standard
performance that is graded as excellent, good,
etc.
4.Nursing care standards must be formed by
nursing staff, preferably by practicing nurses
with the help of experts.
5.They must be easily understood and stated in
clear and simple terms.
6.They must show what will be the
desirable optional level.
7.They must be revised and reviewed
regularly.
8.They must be updated on recent scientific
practice and knowledge.
9.They should be framed to guide in
providing minimal standard, safeguarding
from below par standards. The standards
should be applicable, goal oriented,
modifiable and attainable according to their
hospital policies.
10. They may be directed towards an ideal,
i.e. optional standard, or they may only
specify the minimal care that must be
attained, i.e. a minimum standard. One
must remember that standards that work
are acceptable, objective, flexible and
achievable.
SOURCES OF NURSING CARE
STANDARDS:-
These standards are applied ,framed and
established after clinical trails comprising
critical evaluation. The sources of nursing
standards are as follows-
1.NIMHANS,JIPMER and
Nursing Universities
2.Evidence based care such as
ICU,ICCU,NICU,PICU
3.Miniustry of health and family welfare
4.TNAI
5.SNC,INDIAN NC and INTERNATIONAL
NC
CLASSIFICATION OF NURSING CARE
STANDARDS:-
1.Empirical standards
2.Normative Standards
1.Empirical standards
*framed based on scientific findings and
controlled observation
*practices are observed under large group
of patient care settings
*evaluation is done with the comparison
between the present and expected
innovative care provided under a
controlled setting .
2.Normative standards
*These are framed by a group of authorities
who consider certain nursing practice
standards to be good and effective in
providing nursing care.
*These standards are much more effective
and bigger than empirical standards
*These are framed by TNAI, but the bodies
like INC encourage the empirical standards.
POLICIES
DEF:-it is made by the members of the
organization and is predetermined in order
to facilitate and improve the performance
of the workers.
Advantages:-
1.Determine uniformity in the management
2.Speed up decision making at lower level
hierarchy
3.Help manager to delegate work easily
4.Give meaning to the goals achieved

3.Applied to the environment in which the
patient receive care and in which the
personnel work
4.Applied on the relationship with other
departments

of care, type and volume of services,
emergency services
2.Purchase od drugs, equipment and
supplies
3.Working capital investment
4.Depreciation allowances
5.Hospital personnel
6.Public relations
7.Medical services
8.Nursing services
9.Dietary services
10.Controlling financial inputs and outputs.

Nursing Standards and Policies

  • 1. MANAGEMENT OF NURSING SERVICES IN HOSPITALAND COMMUNITY- NURSING STANDARDS AND POLICIES KULDEEP VYAS ASST.PROF HOD – COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING DSSNI
  • 2. NURSING STANDARDS 1.Standard are established rules or a basis of comparison in measuring or judging capacity ,quantity, context and value of objects in the same category. 2.It is a commanding statement that frames the legal and professional base for nursing standards. PURPOSE OF SETTING STANDARDS FOR NURSING PRACTICE 1.To regularize and formulate bedside care. 2.To improve and upgrade the professional nursing care. 3.To promote the good appraisal of the provision of nursing care. 4.To determine patient satisfaction about the nursing care. 5.T o act as a guideline for nurse researcher to evaluate the relationship between the provision of nursing care and extent of output in patient care.
  • 3. 6.To provide proper direction for the nurse administrators to improve their skill and efficiency in providing ethical nursing care within the health agencies. 7.To provide direction for the nurse educators in developing the goals of educational programs. 8.To provide basic conceptual structure for framing the specialty nursing standards. 9.To show the congruence in the important roles of nurses and nursing care practices within the health care team. CHARACTERISTICS OF STANDARDS 1.They must be realistic, attainable and acceptable. 2.They must be wide enough to apply to a range of settings. 3.They must in positive terms narrate standard performance that is graded as excellent, good, etc. 4.Nursing care standards must be formed by nursing staff, preferably by practicing nurses with the help of experts. 5.They must be easily understood and stated in clear and simple terms.
  • 4. 6.They must show what will be the desirable optional level. 7.They must be revised and reviewed regularly. 8.They must be updated on recent scientific practice and knowledge. 9.They should be framed to guide in providing minimal standard, safeguarding from below par standards. The standards should be applicable, goal oriented, modifiable and attainable according to their hospital policies. 10. They may be directed towards an ideal, i.e. optional standard, or they may only specify the minimal care that must be attained, i.e. a minimum standard. One must remember that standards that work are acceptable, objective, flexible and achievable.
  • 5. SOURCES OF NURSING CARE STANDARDS:- These standards are applied ,framed and established after clinical trails comprising critical evaluation. The sources of nursing standards are as follows- 1.NIMHANS,JIPMER and Nursing Universities 2.Evidence based care such as ICU,ICCU,NICU,PICU 3.Miniustry of health and family welfare 4.TNAI 5.SNC,INDIAN NC and INTERNATIONAL NC CLASSIFICATION OF NURSING CARE STANDARDS:- 1.Empirical standards 2.Normative Standards
  • 6. 1.Empirical standards *framed based on scientific findings and controlled observation *practices are observed under large group of patient care settings *evaluation is done with the comparison between the present and expected innovative care provided under a controlled setting . 2.Normative standards *These are framed by a group of authorities who consider certain nursing practice standards to be good and effective in providing nursing care. *These standards are much more effective and bigger than empirical standards *These are framed by TNAI, but the bodies like INC encourage the empirical standards.
  • 7. POLICIES DEF:-it is made by the members of the organization and is predetermined in order to facilitate and improve the performance of the workers. Advantages:- 1.Determine uniformity in the management 2.Speed up decision making at lower level hierarchy 3.Help manager to delegate work easily 4.Give meaning to the goals achieved Types of policies 1.Applied for patients 2.Applieed to personnel 3.Applied to the environment in which the patient receive care and in which the personnel work 4.Applied on the relationship with other departments

HOSPITAL POLICY:- 1.Providing patient care service, standard of care, type and volume of services, emergency services 2.Purchase od drugs, equipment and supplies 3.Working capital investment 4.Depreciation allowances 5.Hospital personnel 6.Public relations 7.Medical services 8.Nursing services 9.Dietary services 10.Controlling financial inputs and outputs.
