This presentation provides an overview of how the coming wave of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technology will impact medicine, clinical care, and personal health and wellness.
Although entertainment, social connection, and gaming are driving the initial adoption of VR and AR technology, the deepest and most significant impact of the next generation of VR/AR technology will be to enhance clinical care and to improve personal health and wellness. VR and AR technology will also help facilitate the shift of medicine from clinic-based care to telemedicine-based care, and to facilitate personalized medicine.
We know from decades of clinical research that VR/AR technology can provide breakthrough solutions that address the most difficult problems in healthcare - ranging from mood disorders such as Anxiety and Depression to PTSD, Addictions, Autism, Cognitive Aging, Stroke Recovery, and Physical Rehabilitation, to name just a few.
VR technology can also improve clinical measurements and assessments by making them more objective and functional and improve medical training such as surgical skill training and procedure planning by applying simulation-based learning principals. Personal health and wellness will be improved by using VR to promote healthy lifestyles and to reduce stress and anxiety. As the cost of healthcare rises, VR technology can serve as an effective telemedicine platform to reduce costs of care delivery and improve clinical efficiency.

40. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN NURSING
ADMINISTRATION
• Clinical nurse leaders are expected to handle a number of other
responsibilities.
• These health care professionals should not have the added stress of
tracking down needed equipment and constantly worrying about patients’
safety while trying to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.
• Thankfully, the advancement of technology in nursing practice has
improved how nurses perform their daily duties. In fact, more connections
between nursing and technology help nurses spend less time with menial
tasks and more time with patients. It’s the implementation of these
technologies by nursing that helps increase the efficiency of the nurses in
their units.
41. Real-Time Location Systems for Nurses-
RTLS
• RTLS technology in nursing practice
that reduces this problem is real-time
location systems.
• Health care facilities can cut down
unnecessary resources nurses are
quickly able to locate exactly where
something or someone is within a
facility and spent on actual patient
care.
• A report showed that 95 percent of
organizations that put RLTS into effect
saw operational efficiency gains.
43. Patient and Staff Identification Systems
• Bar codes, wristbands and radio
frequency identification (RFID), all
work to track and identify patients in an
effort to reduce errors while also
keeping the hospital population safe.
• Hospitals are implementing the Ava Sys

profession should adapt for a digital future BMJ 2021; 373 :n1190 doi:10.1136/bmj.n1190
•Cybersecurity risks
• Risk related to breach of protected health information
• Risk related to alteration of data that may be used to make wrong healthcare decisions
• Risk related to alteration of device functionality that results in adverse events
•Impersonal patient-doctor interaction / patient isolation
• Patients interact with technology instead of a live care provider
• Lack of empathy
• Lack of Therapeutic bonds
• Risk of miscommunication
•Frustration with poor implementation
• Clinicians spend more time struggling with technology rather than patient care
• Too much reliance on technology – specifically on poor AI implementation that don’t
produce good outcomes.
• slow progress and lacking in leadership and investments.
