 TELEMEDICINE:
 “Tele” is a Greek word meaning “distance “and
“mederi” is a Latin word meaning “to heal”. Time
magazine called telemedicine “healing by wire”.
Although initially considered “futuristic” and
“experimental,” telemedicine is today a reality and has
come to stay.
DEFINITION:
 Telemedicine can be defined as, “the use of modern
information technology, especially two- way interactive
audio/video telecommunications, computers, and
telemetry to deliver health services to remote patients and
to facilitate information exchange between primary care
physicians and specialists at some distance from each
other.”
TYPES OF TELEMEDICINE Remote patient monitoring
Real-time telehealth
Store-and-forward telemedicine
Telemedicine Medical Specialties: Telemedicine is
used in many different medical fields-
 Teleradiology
 Telepsychiatry
 Teledermatology
 Teleopthamology
 Telenephrology
 Teleobstetrics
 Teleoncology
 Telepathology
 Telerehabilitation

ADVANTAGES OF TELEMEDICINE:
 This system creates communication among patients &
healthcare professionals maintaining convenience &
commitment.
 It saves lives in the emergency situations, while there is no
time to take the patient at a hospital.
 Telemedicine can be applied in rural communities or remote
places or post-disaster situations, or to provide emergency
healthcare.
 Patients can receive clinical healthcare from their home
without arduous travel to the hospital.
ADVANTAGES OF TELEMEDICINE:
 Modern innovations of information technology such as, mobile
collaboration has enabled easy information sharing and
discussion about critical medical cases among healthcare
professionals from multiple locations.
 Telemedicine has facilitated patient monitoring through
computer or tablet or phone technology that has reduced
outpatient visits.
 This system also facilitates health education,
 Telemedicine eliminates the possibility of transmitting
infectious diseases between patients and healthcare
professionals.
DISADVANTAGES OF TELEMEDICINE:
 The overall cost of telecommunication system, especially data
management apparatus and practical training of medical
professionals is great.
 Virtual clinical treatment decreases human interaction among
the healthcare professionals and patients that increases the risk
of error in clinical services.
 Telemedicine might take longer time for the difficulties in
connecting virtual communication due to low internet speed or
server problem.
 Low quality of health informatics records,
 Telemedicine system requires tough legal regulation to prevent
unauthorized and illegal service providers in this sector.
CHALLENGES OF TELEMEDICINE:
 Perspective of medical practitioners
 Patients' fear and unfamiliarity
 Financial unavailability
 Lack of basic amenities
 Literacy rate and diversity in languages
 Technical constraints
 Quality aspect
 Government Support
TELENURSING
 Introduction: The word telemedicine came from the
Greek word telos, which implies distance. This concept
might have been originated centuries ago but the current
system of telemedicine was first used in 1960 by National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
 Definition:
 Telenursing refers to the use of telecommunications
technology in nursing to enhance patient care. It
involves the use of electromagnetic channels (e.g.
wire, radio and optical) to transmit voice, data and
video communications signals.
Types of Telenursing
Specialist and primary care
consultations
Store and forward telenursing
Remote monitoring
Interactive telenursing services
 USES OF TELENURSING/APPLICATIONS:
Providing
community
services
Assessment of
conditions and
triage
Education
Care of school
children
Management
of patients is
done by
relaying their
vital
information
Palliative care
Telenursing in
ICU
Suicide and
HIV/AIDS
patients help
Uses of
Telenursing
BENEFITS OF TELENURSING:
NURSES
 Improved salary and flexible working hours
 Less travel and Cost-effective for nurses
 Easy to provide remote services
 Improved job satisfaction and opportunities for skill
development
 New carrier option
 Data sharing
 Rapid response time
BENEFITS OF TELENURSING: PATIENT
 The population living in remote areas can obtain
health care at their destinations if they have internet
facilities on their phones/computers similarly the
travelers can also get services at their home. Easy
access to high quality care.
 ADVANTAGES:
 Provide remote care
 Decrease patient visit
 Data Sharing
 Rapid Response time
 Improve access and outcomes
 Enhances patients voice in decisions
 DISADVANTAGES:
 Dehumanizing effects
 Cost
 Inability for patient to use equipment
 Knowledge base of the nurse
 Equipment malfunction
 SUMMARYAND CONCLUSION:
 It does not require too much of a stretch of imagination to
realize that telemedicine will soon be just another way to
see a health professional. Remote monitoring has the
potential to make every minute count by gathering clinical
data from many patients simultaneously.
