WHAT ARE VALUES?
• The word “value” has its root in the Latin word “valere”
which means to be strong and vigorous.
• a human person has to have strength or valor in every
endeavor.
• It is the basis on which his strength in facing the
challenges of life should be directed.

• Emotionally relative to what is right or wrong.
• All values are morally relative – neutral – until they are
qualified by asking, “How is it good?” or “To whom it is
good?”
5. WHAT ARE FILIPINO VALUES?
• Filipino values are cutural beliefs and
assumptions about what is socially desirable,
and therefore, there are expectations on how one must
behave in certain situations.

10. UTANG NA LOOB
(DEBT OF GRATITUDE)
Utang na loob is a situation where an individual
is required to return a favor or service received.
However, the return of such service or favor
cannot be translated into monetary equivalent,
and may reciprocated in a month of service or
even a lifetime.

among Filipinos and I rest on the
fatalistic outlook and strong
dependence on the “spirits.”

(Let go and let God)
Bahala Na is a Filipino attitude that expresses
courage and faith in God. It has always been
an expression of optimism.
Ex. David facing Goliath. Bahala Na means I will
win because God is with me.

I am referred to as the
indefinite future.
Procrastination is the name of
my game.”

16. MAÑANA HABIT
Mañana Habit can be traced back in the Spanish
colonization era. The term “Mañana” is a
Spanish word that means “tomorrow”. This is a
Filipino trait that enforces procrastination -
practice of putting off work to be done in the
near future or in the last minute. This habit is
exemplified through the “Mamaya na” or “Bukas
na”.

enthusiastically but lose
interest quickly.“

19. NINGAS KUGON
The term Ningas Kugon translates to “burning
of cogon grass”. As a Filipino trait, it means that
Filipinos tend to have a strong enthusiasm in
the beginning of each work or endeavor but
gradually slows down and lose their drive to
work and finish the job. It is said that in work,
Filipinos tend to do their job halfbaked or leave
it unfinished.
20. 5. “I am an individuals’ highly
emotional reaction to protect his
honor and dignity when one is
threaten or questioned and to
retaliate. One common form of me
is “pakipot.”

22. AMOR PROPIO
(LOVING ONESELF)
Means self-love or self-regard. We Filipinos
value self-respect. It is related to dangal which
means dignity. We honor our words and we fight
for our honor.
Ex. According to Whitney Houston.
The greatest love of all is happening to me. I
found the greatest love of all inside of me..

lift and carry the house on their
shoulders when people wish to
move locations in the rural area.

25. BAYANIHAN
Bayanihan derived from the word bayan
(community) and bayani (heroes), happens
when Filipinos unite to do heroic acts for
individuals and communities in need without
expecting anything in return.
*It has something to do with malasakit, pakikipagkapwa-tao,
pagdadamayan, pakikisam and utang na loob.
26. 7. “I am a value of belongingness and
loyalty with sensitivity to the feelings
of others on the principle of “give and
take”. I am also a folk concept of
good public relations.

others will think, say and do. I
cannot say “NO” even if it is
against my will to do what is
being requested.”

In the workpace, Filipinos do not want to be
embarassed. They resent being shouted at. And
they also do not want to embarass others.
“Hiya” or excessive shyness, may hinder open
communication.

best experience when they
host you. They want to show
their best all the time.

34. HOSPITALITY
Tourists in the Philippines know us because we
value mabuting pakikitungo. We are friendly and
hospitable. Filipinos are excellent hosts.
*This is because of our sense of pakikipagkapwa-tao and hiya.
