This document provides an overview of how to effectively research for an academic assignment. It discusses interacting critically with information by considering factors like an author's authority and a source's context, age, and design. It also outlines different types of academic sources like scholarly versus popular literature and primary versus secondary sources. Key search strategies are explained, including using Boolean operators and a database's controlled vocabulary. The document concludes by explaining the assignment will have students find and cite sources on a topic using these research skills.
AEA 2013 Presentation -- Supercharge Your Search ResultsMatthew Von Hendy
Short presentation on simple techniques and resources to supercharge your search. In short, how to find twice the number of high quality resources in half the time. Topics cover include: boolean operators, truncation, phrase searching, and date limiters. Techniques for escaping the Google "filter bubble" and strategies for dealing with too much or too little information are also discussed.

Entering words into a search engine is great for
finding a quick answer but it won’t always give
you the best evidence for your arguments. In this
session learn how to research rather than search for
the best information for your assignments.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2. Hello!
I am not a biologist
The t.rex is my favourite animal
I am, however, your subject librarian.
Today we’re going to learn some critical
thinking and research skills to help you
complete your assignment.

4. How we seek out
information impacts the
information we get
5. How can we determine the
“good” information?
• Does it match what you know to be
true? Who does it reference?
• Who is the author? Publisher?
• What is the context of the writing?
• How old is it? What is “old” in this
particular medium?
• Broad? Narrow?
• How does it look?

7. Types of Resources
• Scholarly Vs. Popular literature
• Primary Vs. Secondary sources
8. Popular literature
• Not peer reviewed
• Written by journalists
• Topics are typically broad
• Can contain advertisements – often
printed in colour on glossy paper
• References, abstracts, and
bibliographies are notably absent
9. Pros:
- Often very current
- Offers a wide range of perspectives
- Appeals to a broad audience
Popular literature
Cons:
- Not peer-reviewed or scholarly
- Author often lacks expertise
- Lack of supporting evidence
10. Scholarly literature
• Peer reviewed
• Authors are academics/experts
• Original research topic
• Citations and bibliography are included
• No advertisements, plain design
11. Components of a scholarly article
• Abstract/introduction
• Literature review
• Methodology
• Results
• Conclusion/discussion
• Bibliography/references
Abstract
12. Pros:
- Written by and for experts/scholars
- Often very specific and detailed
- Searchable via scholarly database
- Contains bibliography of sources
Scholarly literature
Cons:
- Sometimes specificity does not
allow for an overall picture of a
particular topic
- Sometimes requires extensive
existing knowledge of a topic to
fully understand
13. Secondary sources
• Do NOT contain original data
• Interpreted or summarized, often in
handbooks, encyclopaedias, and
dictionaries
• A good place to start for an introduction
to a subject
• Textbooks should, in general, be
considered a secondary source
14. Primary sources
• Contain original data
• First appearance of research
• Not yet interpreted, condensed, or
evaluated
15. Important note!
• We cannot draw a bright line for which
formats are primary vs. secondary
sources
• Articles in databases, for example, can
be either
• Which section in an academic article will
help you determine if it is primary vs
secondary?
17. To do the best searching, you have to learn
the language of the database
18. First concept: Boolean operators
• We use OR for related terms
when we want to broaden our
results
• Example:
• We use AND to combine different
concepts and make our results more
specific or narrow
19. First concept: Boolean operators
* Or ?
• These are wildcards used to truncate your search (which one to use depends on the database)
• Will search all words starting with the root
• Example: Book* will search book, books, booked, booking, etc…
“ ”
• Use quotation marks to search a group of words as a phrase
• Example: “United States”
20. Second concept: thesaurus or controlled
vocabulary
• Searching keywords will definitely get you results, but these results are limited by the specific language you
choose to use
• Many databases have a thesaurus, or a controlled vocabulary, of specific terms assigned to articles by indexers
• Using these terms to search will allow you to find other results than a simple keyword search
22. We are going to:
1) Find a journal article from a citation
2) Use open government resources to
find out more about our topic
3) Use search strategies in proprietary
databases to get additional
information
4) Cite all our sources using CSE
23. What you need to be able to do:
• Identify the key components of a citation
