Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Here are some activities that you and your child
can do at home that will give them practice with
what we are learning at school. Feel free to move
the activities around to different days if you
wish.
Monday – Practice identifying and ordering
numbers 0-20.
Tuesday – Practice writing the letters we have
learned so far (l, o, g, h, t, p, a, n, m, & i) while
saying their sounds. See what words you can
make with them!
Wednesday – Read stories and practice retelling
them by discussing the beginning, middle, and
end.
Thursday – No School!
Friday – No School!
- If you notice your child having difficulty with
any of these activities, please keep practicing
them at home. It will help them greatly in
mastering that skill quicker.

Phonics
We will take a break from phonics this week and
review the letters we have learned so far. We will
review the vowels o, a, and i and do some word
building practice.
Reading
We will read a poem called “Making Friends” and
continue to work with syllables in words.
Writing
We will work on making sure our pictures match
our words and our sentences begin with capital
letters.
Math
We will continue to work with pennies and shape
attributes.
Science/Social Studies
We will learn how jobs have changed over time
and how people earn money.
Special Notes
Book Fair – Nov. 29th
– Dec. 3rd
We will use our library time on Monday,
November 29th
from 10:10-10:40am to go down
and preview the book fair. If you would like to
send money in with your child any of the other
days of that week, I will make sure they get a
chance to go down and buy something. Feel free
to come in and take your child down to the book
fair yourself. Look for the times it will be running
on the green flyer that came home a week ago.
