This document provides instructions for a lesson on inference and deduction. It explains that students will define inference and deduction, explain how they can infer or deduce information from quotes in a novel, and justify their inferences and deductions. It includes an activity where the teacher will perform actions and students must infer what emotion or situation it represents. Students are also given a table to copy where they must select quotes from the novel, deduce or infer something from each quote, and provide reasoning to support their conclusions.

Inference and Deduction
1) Using the dictionaries on your
desk, write down definitions for
the words ‘inference’ and
‘deduction’.
2) Try and explain what these
things are in your own words
3) If you can, give an example of
what these things are.
3. By the end of the lesson all of you will be able
to:
define what inference and deduction are
explain what they infer and deduce from
selected quotations in the novel
justify their inferences and deductions with
sound reasoning.
4. Number 1 – 5 in your exercise book.
In the next few minutes I am going to do five different things that
show that I feel a certain way or that certain things are happening
to me.
Watch what I am
doing
Explain what I
am feeling or
what is
happening to me
Give reasoning to
back up what
you are inferring
or deducing.
Write down what I am doing...
5. What can you deduce or infer from what we have read.
Copy and complete the table below leaving enough space to
write at least a sentence in each box.
Quotation
What do you
deduce or infer
Give reasoning for this
deduction or inference
‘Serve her right!’ Shanie said with
glee. ‘Coming over to our table like
the big “I am”’ (page 89/90)
‘Mrs Hadley stopped on the stairs
when she saw me’ (page 91)

pinging on elastic’ (page 95)
‘I didn’t even take time to gather up
my books. I just swept the whole lot
into my school bag.’ (page 97)
