Silent Strength
While working late one afternoon, I heard the weather report forecasting continuous
thunderstorms throughout the evening. Hoping to escape the downpour and chaotic commute, I concluded
my affairs and hurriedly exited the building where I worked. The warm humidity and the fragrance of rain
momentarily engulfed me as I walked outside. Ominous clouds pregnant with moisture curtained the sky
as rumbling thunder and flashes of lightning illuminated the stratosphere. The low lying wind steadily
increased in velocity; the promises of a ferocious Norfolk summer storm were on display.
I raced to my car and accelerated to Interstate 64, praying for favorable road conditions, but a sea
of red lights beckoned, welcoming me into unmoving traffic. The motorists’ frustration heightened as we
inched forward—crawling at a snail’s pace. A sense of foreboding and alarm suffused the air at the
inevitability of the impending deluge. As thoughts of warmth and comfort pervaded my consciousness, a
resounding clap made me jump. The clouds unfolded giving birth to torrential rains which descended
mercilessly in blankets of white, impairing visibility as the wiper blades uselessly attempted the chore of
removing water from the windshield. So I, along with the others who could, moved to the shoulder of the
road.
Sitting there waiting for the waters to abate, listening to the pounding pulse of the rain awakened
an unpleasant childhood memory—seeing my mother cry for the first time. As a seven year old boy,
numerous details escaped my observation because of my preoccupation with playing games and watching
television. I vividly recalled my stupefaction at this peculiarity.
When we were kids, inclement weather prevented us from venturing outside. To alleviate our
boredom, my sisters and I started a rousing game of Uno—adding our own rules—starting arguments and
fights. The sniffles and voices coming from the next room caught our attention. Mother and father were
standing in the kitchen, speaking in hushed tones. We peeked in and saw mom hanging her head while
dad stood rigidly, arms by his side. They attempted to keep their voices lowered, but the intensity of their
disagreement caused fitful outbursts. Clearly they were embroiled in a dispute evidenced by the harsh
words and gestures. The exchange escalated and father declared the argument futile, walking away. He
emerged to tell us goodbye individually, then collectively, and left. Staring out the window, silently
sobbing as tears rolled down her soft cheeks, mother helplessly watched his retreat. I walked over to her,
tugged on her skirt and asked the obvious questions: “Is something wrong? Why was dad leaving and
where did he go?” She straightened her spine, wiped her face and offered promises saying soothingly,
everything would be fine.
However, it was not fine. In the weeks that followed dad.

CY O'Connor was an engineer born in Ireland in 1843 who died by suicide in Australia in 1902. He had a successful career as a chief engineer in New Zealand where he built major railways. He then moved to Western Australia where he oversaw the construction of the Goldfields Water Supply Pipeline, a massive project to supply water to the goldfields. However, he took his own life before the pipeline was completed, overcome by stress from political attacks and investigations into his work. The pipeline was finally opened in 1903, achieving his greatest accomplishment after his death.

Ben Hall was a famous Australian bushranger born in 1837. He committed many crimes over his life, including robberies, shooting policemen, and being declared an outlaw with a bounty on his head. Hall was married briefly but divorced, after which he fully embraced the outlaw lifestyle. In 1864, Hall was shot and killed by police while trying to escape to America, with 15 bullets found in his body.

Mabo spent a decade fighting for indigenous land rights in the High Court. His landmark case overturned the idea of terra nullius and established that indigenous people could claim traditional lands. Unfortunately, Mabo did not live to see his victory, but his work helped indigenous people regain rights to their ancestral homelands.

Vincent Lingiari was an Aboriginal elder and leader who led the Wave Hill Walk Off in 1966. He was born in 1908 and was the head stockman of the Wave Hill cattle station in the Northern Territory. In 1966, over 200 Gurindji people packed up and walked off the station in protest over poor treatment. Lingiari never worked at the station again and lived on his traditional lands for the rest of his life. He received the land rights for his people and was awarded the Order of Australia before passing away in 1988.
Peter Lalor
Peter Lalor was an Irish-born Australian politician who led the Eureka Rebellion in 1854. He was well-educated and became involved in the gold rush in Australia. Life for miners was difficult due to high licensing fees and unfair treatment by authorities. The stockade began when a miner was murdered and his killer was let off due to connections. Lalor and other miners fought for fair treatment, reasonable licensing, and the right to vote. This led to the Battle of the Eureka Stockade between miners and government forces, where Lalor lost an arm but the miners' goals were later achieved. Lalor had a long political career after this but is best remembered for leading the Eureka Rebellion.

Remember that the standard you complete it at should be close to the standard that you would be showing in class, in other words, a very high one. Take your time to ensure it is your best work. 100 Word Challenge: Using the idea: ‘the forest .’ you will create a piece of text that cannot exceed 100 words. Try using powerful imagery and word choice, making it as exciting and interesting as you possibly can. The only limitation is your imagination! Some examples from students your age: I gazed at the rain drops cascading down the pine trees that were swaying in the darkness. The forest seemed alive as I crept though the haunted area. I have heard about the horrid stories about children going missing in this part. My stomach churned inside my body, my heart pounded inside my chest, threatening to come out. Would I make it out alive, or would I die alone? Time was of the essence. I turned, but by making that split decision I saw something that made my skin break into a sweat. I clenched my fists.
- 2. The forest seemed alive as I dived into its depths, looking for a suitable place to hide. I was running. Why was I running? They’ll never find me here. I gazed up into the canopy of foliage. Was it just me, or had it got darker? And colder, too? A chill ran down my spine. They’d never find me. I’d be alone forever: wandering, searching for someone to talk to. Then I heard it. It was soft at first, but then it crescendoed, like a dramatic piece of music in a Shakespeare play: the screams. The screams of my mother. Try and use the toolkit below to ensure your writing has the following elements. These elements will improve the calibre of your writing, making it more interesting and descriptive. You may even like to check some of them off as you include them. Good luck!
