When greeting in Japan, handshakes are common but tend to be weak. Japanese people also attach honorific titles like "san", "chan", or "kun" to names depending on the person's age, gender, and relationship. Dating usually involves group activities like karaoke or amusement parks. On Valentine's Day women give gifts to men, and on White Day in March men return the gesture. Marriages traditionally take place at shrines according to Shinto customs, with a priest conducting a ceremony that includes drinking sake.
The document provides observations from a visit to a monk temple. It describes various customs observed, including removing shoes before praying and monks not shaking hands to remain pure. Donations from visitors supported different temple needs and came in buckets of supplies. The temple grounds included food stands that only accepted special coins, and areas for eating while listening to speakers. Inside the temple, guests at a wedding formed lines to eat.

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, involves many colorful traditions for both family and community. Some family traditions include cleaning the house, wearing new clothes, greeting gods, giving "hong bao" money envelopes, and enjoying symbolic foods like fish. Communities hold temple fairs, flower markets, lantern displays, and lion/dragon dances. The Chinese Culture Center celebrates Spring Festival with performances, crafts, and food to preserve and promote Chinese culture, and also offers year-round cultural programs and an art exhibition space.
The document discusses various ways of engaging with culture including condemnation, consumption, critique, and creation. It argues that culture is not optional and we are called to work in and care for the cultural garden. Some reasons for an unhealthy avoidance of culture are discussed, such as dualistic thinking and misunderstandings of spirituality. The need for a biblical understanding of culture and worldview is presented. Questions about human identity, purpose, sin, and redemption are part of how stories and symbols shape culture. Changing culture is likened to eating an elephant, one bite at a time.
