Telcos prefer GPON over EPON for fiber networks due to technical and historical reasons. GPON was designed for phone networks to support both business and residential services. It also allows RF video signals to be transmitted over fiber. EPON is preferred by cable providers as it provides symmetrical bandwidth, important for cable applications. Ultimately the fiber network technologies are moving to all-IP transmission over point-to-point Ethernet connections.

I’m amazed to see our tremendous growth in the industry in this quarter. There’s plenty to be optimistic
about. With COVID vaccines readily available to more and more people worldwide in the coming months,
we will hopefully begin transitioning back to the post-COVID landscape. I know I’m not alone when I say
that I can’t wait to get back into in person customer and partner meetings. We’re forging ahead with
getting customers ready for the new normal. Proud to see TIM Brazil to move 100% of their datacenters to
the cloud.
If one thing’s for sure, organizations in the telco space have transformed rapidly in this unprecedented
year. I’m excited to share The Network, Microsoft’s newest podcast series focused on digital resilience and
acceleration of technology for the telco industry, with stories from business leaders around the globe.

The more people have been able to achieve while on the move, the more dependent society has become on mobile broadband networks. As applications like self-driving vehicles and remotely operated machinery evolve, become more innovative, and more widespread, the level of performance that 5G networks need to deliver will inevitably rise. Keeping pace with ever-increasing demand calls for greater flexibility in all parts of the network, which in turn requires tight integration between 5G radio, transport networks, and cloud infrastructures.
With all the potential that it holds, there is little doubt that 5G will be a game changer. Nevertheless, the business case for mobile operators remains difficult: huge spectrum and infrastructure capital investments are required and compelling economic models for monetisation are yet to be fully developed

Mobile Network Operators need to continuously expand capacity to meet the rapid growth in mobile data consumption. Crucially, this extra capacity needs to be delivered where demand arises, including deep indoors and in areas that are covered by fewer mobile radio sites. While substantial amounts of mid-bands spectrum and high-band spectrum are becoming available, the gap in the amount between low-band (sub-1 GHz) and mid-bands is increasing.

Open Access Network (OAN) & Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC): Foundation for a ...Hedi Hmida (PhD)
Abstract— Today, the increasing adoption of internet applications is driving the demand for high bandwidth communication services to individuals, homes and business premises. Fiber to the home (FTTH) is a future-proof fixed access technology that supports high bandwidth applications to the end user; however its deployment typically requires heavy capital investments that make for a significantly long payback period. For this reason, there has been an increase in fiber access network sharing initiatives between Network Operators. Analysis has shown that sharing the infrastructure on a wholesale basis delivers savings in capital and operational expenses; subsequently shortening the RoI (Return of Investment) period, enabling the faster delivery of services to a greater number of subscribers. This model is known as OAN; a horizontally layered network architecture and business model that separates the physical access of the network from the actual service provision. This paper presents an overview of OAN models, the most commonly shared infrastructure globally, and draws conclusions from experiences in the region. The paper outlines strategic business models, provides guidelines to overcome technical and regulatory implementation challenges and presents a new business model based on the combination of OAN and FMC concept that would enable the future deployment of networks capable of providing broadband services from multiple services providers (retailers) simultaneously.

Ericsson Technology Review, issue #2, 2016Ericsson
The latest issue of Ericsson Technology Review covers a wide range of topics including narrowband Internet of Things, the next-generation central office, telco-grade platform as a service, 4G/5G RAN architecture, and cloud robotics enabled by 5G. The feature story – Five trends shaping innovation in ICT – presents what I consider to be the major technology trends that will stimulate innovation in the coming year. Do you agree with me? I’d love to hear from you with any feedback you might have.
If I were to suggest one takeaway from all of the articles included in this issue, I would say it is speed. Device processing is getting faster, data speeds are constantly increasing and radio speeds are approaching those of fiber. More people are becoming subscribers, more things are becoming connected and more applications are running constantly. Developers of new technologies are working hard to enhance responsiveness by reducing latency, a key performance parameter. The capability to determine which functions can be virtualized to maximize ideal placement in the network and ensure low latency is one of the primary driving factors behind the proposed split of radio-access architecture discussed in this issue.
As always, I hope you find our stories relevant and inspiring.
LTE-M vs NB-IoT technology, who is the mainstream LPWAN technology?
NB-IoT is also known as LTE Cat-NB, and other terms such as LTE Cat- NB1 and Cat N1 also apply to the NB-IoT specification released in 2016. Today, there are also Cat N2 or Cat NB2 devices using the later enhanced NB-IoT specifications, which are now moving towards commercialization. So, what are the results of LTE-M vs NB-IoT?
Below are the 10 comparison results of LTE-M vs NB-IoT.
Future European society and economy will strongly rely on 5G infrastructure.
The impact will go far beyond existing wireless access networks with the aim for communication services, reachable everywhere, all the time, and faster. 5G is an opportunity for the European ICT sector which is already well positioned in the global R&D race. 5G technologies will be adopted and deployed globally in alignment with developed and emerging markets’ needs.
Wireless communication technology takes a leap about every ten years, and every generation has fundamentally changed the world. For the next-generation 5G communications technology, the industry's more consistent goal is to achieve commercial deployment in 2020. In 2015, the global development of 5G technology entered a crucial period for technical R&D and standardization preparation. It has completed the key content of the 5th generation of mobile communication naming, vision, and timetable, and initiated the 5G standard before this year. Compared to previous generations of networks, 5G will play a bigger role - create a connection framework for everything.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

1.- Telcos Pick GPON For Good Reasons
Cable providers that want to build fiber networks to offer business services seem to have a preference for
Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). However, telcos steer toward Gigabit PON (GPON). Why the
different preferences?
Geoff Burke, senior director of corporate marketing at Calix, says one reason is simply heritage.
"GPON is really an ITU standard, and EPON is an IEEE standard," he says. “They come from different
sides of the technology world. There's a little bit of a political aspect. I don't think either industry wants
to wholly adopt the other's standards."
According to Burke, GPON was designed to emulate phone networks, and it is built for both business and
residential services. Calix has won 20 new projects, totaling more than $225 million, stemming from
broadband stimulus awards. And the majority of these projects are for telcos that are building GPON
networks.
Aside from politics, there are relevant technical reasons for the different choices as well. "GPON is the
only technology that can gracefully support RF over it for analog video," explains Burke. "Customers that
have an existing cable head end are forced into selecting GPON."
They could potentially build an all-new EPON network in parallel with their existing infrastructures but, for
small telcos, it's more efficient to run all their services over one GPON network.
"We have hundreds of customers that use GPON as their RF carrier," says Burke. "They've been able to
consolidate into one network that runs over GPON and rides over the top of new fiber."
Cable, on the other hand, is more inclined to EPON when deploying fiber. EPON has the advantage of
providing symmetrical upstream and downstream bandwidth. CableLabs is creating DPoE (DOCSIS
Provisioning over EPON) specifications. For that original announcement, click here. And for an in-depth
examination, see "A Proposal for DOCSIS 4.0: The Best of DOCSIS and PON."
In A Perfect World Burke sees both GPON and EPON as steps toward the ultimate goal: All-IP services
over all fiber.
"Nearly 50 percent of the fiber business we win these days is actually point-to-point Ethernet, with no
sharing involved," he notes.
Many of the telcos that scored stimulus money actually are "home-running" the fiber, he adds: "It runs
contrary to the efficiencies of GPON, which is one of the most fiber-efficient of PON technologies. But
these folks are thinking 'as we look to the future, we see the importance of symmetrical. We won't have
to spend any money laying any more fiber.' Nirvana is a point-to-point connection."

4.- Hot IT disaster recovery trends for 2011
By Pierre Dorion
2010 has been an interesting year for disaster recovery planners and IT practitioners in general. While
the constant chatter about economic doom and gloom seems to have come to a long-awaited end, it
hasn't exactly been replaced with exuberant talk of economic recovery. The global recession has forced
many IT organizations to look at ways to get things done on a reduced budget, and has created an
opportunity to investigate different IT disaster recovery options that may not necessarily have been
considered in a "business as usual" economy. This article outlines some of the disaster recovery trends
we can expect moving into 2011.

5.- 802.11n: The End of Ethernet?
AUTHOR:Paul DeBeasi (pdebeasi@burtongroup.com)
Summary of Findings
Bottom Line: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11n standard represents
the beginning of the end for wired Ethernet as the dominant local area network(LAN) access technology
in the enterprise. Over the next few years, improvements in system silicon, radio design, network control,
3. fam’s teleco news (9ªEd.) 3/7
wireless security, power management, and cost will improve 802.11n to the point where it will begin to
erode the switched Ethernet market.
Context: Enterprise mobility is driven by the demand for seamless access to information anytime,
anywhere, and from any device. Mobility can facilitate business continuity, improve collaboration, simplify

8.- Improving Mobile Backhaul Network Reliability with Carrier-Class IEEE 1588
(PTP)
Telecommunications networks are rapidly shifting from circuit switched to packet switched technologies
to meet exploding demand for bandwidth in both core and access networks. Traditional circuit switched
TDM networks were engineered to carry precise frequency synchronization throughout the network.
Access platforms, such as wireless base stations, rely on synchronization delivered over the network
backhaul connection to assure high QoS for end user applications. A key dependency in the evolution to
Ethernet backhaul in telecom networks is the ability to deliver carrier grade synchronization over Ethernet
to remote wireless base stations and access platforms.
IEEE 1588 (Precision Time Protocol or PTP) is rapidly gaining traction as the technology of choice to
deliver synchronization to remote telecom elements over Ethernet backhaul connections. Figure 1 shows
a typical example of PTP synchronization for wireless networks. All GSM and UMTS base stations must be
frequency synchronized to +/- 50 ppb (parts per billion) to support handover as mobiles transition from
one base station to another. Failure to meet the 50 ppb synchronization requirement will result in
dropped calls.

9.- ITU redefines '4G', International body loosens definition to include LTE, WiMax, and
HSPA+
by Chris Snow, Tues. December 21, 2010
Commercially deployed LTE, WiMax, HSPA+, and even "evolved" forms of 3G now may all be accurately
referred to as "4G." The International Telecommunication Union (Geneva, Switzerland) has altered the
definition of the "4G" standard to one that aligns with the marketing activities of companies like Sprint,
Clearwire, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless; though public controversy will no doubt continue. In the U.S.,
Verizon's LTE network, Sprint's WiMax network, and T-Mobile's recently announced HSPA+ network have
all been publicly portrayed as "4G" networks. But while all these technologies are faster than 3G, each
one's performance was a far cry from the official 4G specification laid out by the ITU. That is, of course,
until now.
Although the original technical definition of 4G was widely accepted--save for providers of these
previously "pre-4G" services--the move's ultimate value will be the easing of consumer confusion.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the ITU said: "As the most advanced technologies currently
defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as '4G,'
although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these
technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of
improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now
deployed."

¡¡Feliz 2011!
