Tips for good note taking!
• Write down information teacher writes on board.
• Listen for words that signal important information. (Pay
attention, I want you to understand this, Don’t forget this,
An important point is…)
• Listen for clues that tell you hoe many details will be listed.
(There are three major themes)
• Put a ? Mark if you don’t understand something.
• Underline, circle, or star anything the teacher repeats or
emphasizes.
• Draw pictures and diagrams to help illustrate ideas.
Tips for good note taking!
• Use abbreviations for speed.
• Use colored highlights to highlight information on
handouts.
• Write on one side of the page and number all pages.
• Put date, subject, teacher and name at the top of the
page.
• Don’t worry about punctuation or grammar.
• Don’t write every word the teacher says, just the main
ideas.
• Look over notes ASAP!
Before class
• Read your assignment and be ready to listen.
• Review your goals for the course.
• Review notes from the last class.
After class
• Read through notes as soon as possible.
• Add information from other sources (textbooks)
• Finish any incomplete sentences.
• Make a game of creating mock test questions.
• Review with a classmate.
• Write out abbreviations.
• Jot down questions you have to ask your teacher.
• Highlight important information.
