Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs by describing actions and qualities. Many adverbs end in -ly, though not all -ly words are adverbs. Adverbs answer questions like how, when, or where something was done. They can be placed before or after verbs and before words they modify. Adverbs form comparisons regularly with -er and -est or irregularly like badly, farther, better, best. Care must be taken to distinguish adjectives from adverbs.
