NON-RENEWABLE
RESOURCES

WHAT ARE NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES?
 Non–renewable resources are those which once
used up ,are exhausted, and are either non
renewed by nature, or renewed very slowly over
millions of years.
EXAMPLES
 Fuels like coal and petroleum, and minerals like gold, iron
and copper.
MINERALS AND FUELS
 Rocks on the earth are made up of substances called minerals. Minerals are
another important natural resources.
 The minerals obtained from the earth are in the impure form. They are
purified and used to make a number of things.
 We get metals such as iron, copper aluminium, gold and silver from minerals.
These are shiny and hard. We also get other substances such as diamond,
mica and limestone from minerals.
 Fuels such as petrol, diesel ,natural gas and coal are also obtained from the
earth. Petrol ,diesel and natural gas are obtained from petroleum.
PETROLEUM
 Petroleum comes from the liquefied ,fossilized
remains of plants and animals that live hundreds of
years ago; once oil sources are depleted ,they
cannot be replaced. Oils are used to create fuels
such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. oils are used in
the manufacturing of plastics and industrial
chemicals.
COAL
 Coal is made when plant material has been
compressed in bogs for millions of years. It is
the most plentiful non-renewable resource in
the world and is used to create half of the
electricity.
NATURAL GAS
 Natural gas is the result of decomposing
plants and animals that were trapped
beneath rock millions of years ago. It is
used for cooking, heating homes and
fueling vehicles.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SAVE
MINERALS?
 The mineral resources on the earth are non- renewable.
 Once used up , they will not be available to us any more.
 Mineral such as coal and petroleum , which give us fuels for
providing energy , are being used up rapidly.
 We should used this resources carefully and not waste them.
 To save these minerals we should depend more on sources of
energy that will never get used up, for example, solar energy and
wind energy.
THANK
YOU.
