The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that

figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and
fear that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled

In some works, the events are given natural explanations where as others are solely supernatural (Roberts, 2006). The supernatural or inexplicable
event in The War of the Worlds is obviously the invasion of the Martians. Wells uses this invasion to portray his theme of monstrosity and to magnify
the terror felt by the reader's. Wells focuses the readers attention on monstrosity, the Martians, that inspire fear not only because they are different or
gruesome in their appearance and actions, but mostly because this monstrosity can be represented as us. In The War of the Worlds, the Martians force

a number of anthologies. She uses imagery, intimidating diction, and literary devices to convey the emotion and theme of snakes, hollowness, and death
in this story.
From the start, "The Specialist's Hat" lures you in with an eerie ambience. The tale plays on some macabre facet of the simplicity of childhood. It is
focalized around a game that the twins play, known as the Dead game, with a capital D. When you're Dead, you can do anything you want without
fear, like in a fantasy. When you're dead with a lowercase d, you are truly dead, lifeless. The twins started playing this Dead game 8 days after their
mother died. My favorite part of Kelly's writing is just how well she can weave two parallel narratives with a climax whose sense of dread is derived
from a sort of subtle asymmetry between the two.
The American Gothic Genre typically shows guilt, puritanism, supernatural beings and/ or events, fear of the unknown, unheimlich, anxieties, and
rationality vs irrationality. Mysteries, intense emotion, romance, heroes, evil curses, and gloomy, decaying isolated settings such as castles and

The Victorian era was a time were society held great awareness towards religion and morality, Shelly is aiming to impart through Victor the point that

Otranto" was the first official story to be classified under the gothic genre. It was published in 1764 by Horace Walpole. It was a tale about the

There is then a tracking shot of the man inter–cut with a close up of a roadside drain, where the creature 'Tooms' is lurking. When focused on the drain,

Throughout all four letters we notice Walton's spirits getting worse as he goes from being eager to go on his adventure to longing to get home. This is
typical of the gothic genre, a light beginning gradually leading to a dark ending.
It is not until the fourth letter we meet Victor Frankenstein. Walton and his crew find him nearly dead. They found only one dog of the several that
Frankenstein had pulling his sleigh. This shows just how cold it must have been for the specially bread dogs to be unable to survive it and yet,
Frankenstein is still hanging on, showing his determination to destroy the monster. Frankenstein refers to the monster as "the daemon"; this shows just
what an evil creature

The description of the old people creates a supernatural eerie sense in the book, The Red Room. They are described as though they are inhuman
creatures. The word "pale" makes the reader think of ghosts as that is the common vision that people have of ghosts and the way they could look.
The old people also use repitition in their speech. This helps the tension of the story as it makes the reader want to know the meaning of what they are

We thought it would be a worthwhile piece of information if we sent letters off to institutes that were in a position to provide us with relevant
information ( for example, how they tackle the thriller genre or a way of making a successful thriller movie). The information that was received from
Granada followed the 'High Concept Model' which is a ten point formula which film scholars use to make successful Hollywood films. With this in
mind ,we could now contrast our ideas and see if the thriller film of ours follows that successful formula. That would add key connotational value for

176). Eve Sedgwick depicts this in her work, 'Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosexual Desire' as she discusses how these ideas

Gothic literature has a strong presence of the supernatural world and with that comes mystery. Supernatural can be defined by events that science and

In this pre–rational, I will explore the Gothic genre in regards to its history, development, key elements that identify literature as Gothic, and authors
that made this genre successful. Next, I will examine the themes and content of my chosen text Dracula and how it salsify the gothic literature criteria.

Science fiction has quite a long tradition of being a liberating genre of literature for artists and authors, which served them as an ideal ground for

These women are studied as symbols of 'peculiar' power: carrying guns, smoking cigarettes, and going after what they want, similar to the men in these
narratives (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). The femme fatales are mysterious, ambiguous and most significantly: deadly. These women and their power are
however mainly defined by their sexuality and the men often still hold the voice of authority – mainly through voice overs and flashbacks (Gledhill,

There are over a hundred different types of genres and subgenres that have been created throughout the years. Writers have been trying to attract all
kinds of readers by creating new types of genres. One genre that has many different subgenres is the Romantic movement. This movement has been

In the gothic subgenre, they make use of old and ruined castles or manors. However, in the regency subgenre they use extravagant and expensive
manors as their setting. The regency shows you what it was like to be in the upper class and the benefits of it as well. Regency novels typically
described beautiful mansions that housed fancy balls and many priceless treasures as well. The gothic novel is the exact opposite of the regency in
this aspect. They typically used ruined and destroyed castles as their settings. Also, within these castles they had many trapdoors and secret passages.

Firstly, I have the mysterious and gripping Ghost Genre; the books I have studied are "The Woman in Black", "The Langoliers" and the spooky film,
"The Others". The second genre is Fantasy & Adventure. The book
I am studying is "Lirael", a recent book written by Australian author

In the ghost story film "The Others", an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is
shown screaming, making you wonder what has just occurred.
This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre.
Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra–sensitive to any bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story,
possibly scaring the viewer and making them believe that the characters are quite strange.
The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main
character usually gets themselves into a spot of bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be set
in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the scariness.
In both "The Others" and Susan Hill's "The Woman in Black," death is a key factor in the story line. Dying is always used because if somebody had
not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major character in the novel. In "The Woman in Black", narrator and main character Arthur

Compson can be defined as a weak, cold person filled with a sense of insecurity. Her self–absorption, hypochondria, and her constant whining leave no
room for the love that the children need. Quentin is too late to realize that Mrs. Compson is most likely responsible for Caddy's becoming so
promiscuous due to the lack of love and affection that was never given to them as children. Ironically, the only child Mrs. Compson shows any
affection to is Jason. "I look at her I wonder if she can be my child except Jason he has never given me one moment's sorrow since I first held him
in my arms I knew he was to be my joy and salvation" (June Second, 1910. Pg. 65). Jason's success in life is due to the fact that he feels no love for
anyone, he denies any allegiance to, or love for, anyone except himself. Perhaps that is why Mrs. Compson prefers him over her other children,
because she and him are the same person. Jason's monomaniac attitude allows him to hate his sister Caddy for what she did, and allows him to carry
a grudge longer than most. "I know I'm just a troublesome old woman. But I know that people cannot flout God's laws with impunity" (April Sixth,

to the actions of Dorian which inflict horror upon the reader. Wilde does not emphasis this element to much as in the time that we was writing, the

influence upon Dorian. Evil is also showcased through the deal with the devil that Dorian makes. In the beginning of the novel, Dorian desires to sell
his soul in order to remain young and beautiful forever. His wish is granted and that sets in motion the path of infamy which Dorian will take. In
Wilde's time, Morality, Hedonism and culture's obsession with beauty and youth were key issues in society. Wilde understood this and included such
themes into Dorian Gray. Hence, making the text relatable and vital to the period in which Dorian Gray was penned. Wilde in Dorian Gray is making

Throughout history, mankind has enjoyed a good horror story. Perhaps it is something in human nature, the desire for thrill without putting one in
harm's way, the desire for suspense and chills that make a person's blood run cold. Horror stories and culture surrounding the macabre can be found in
just about every society known to man, from the east to the west. This is especially prominent during the late 1700s when the Gothic literature first

anyone is susceptible to becoming necromorphs, even small infants, children, and beloved pets, all of them can be turned into these horrifying

and intense scores to create and immersive experience for the player. In the intense scores, scare cords commonly seen in some gothic horror movies
