Nigerian Fashion and
Culture
•Nigerian fashion and culture is unique and attractive. First of all,
Nigeria is found in the western part of Africa. along the eastern
coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and just north of the equator. It is
bordered on the west by Benin, on the north by Niger and Chad,
and on the east by Cameroon.
•Nigeria has more than 250 ethnic tribes. The most dominant ethnic groups are the Hausa, Igbo and
Yoruba.
The Hausa are found in the Northern part of the country and their attire are similar to the
Fulani ethnic group because they are two distinct groups in the Northern part of Nigeria.
 The Igbo are found in the East of the country. Their most popular designs are Indian George,
and head scarves.
The Yoruba of southwestern part of Nigeria are particularly noted for their exquisite fashion taste.
They celebrate their marriages, birthdays, even funerals in grand, opulent style with Aso Ebi
attires.
•Nigeria has the largest population of all the countries in Africa with a total population
of 152,217,341 (according to the CIA World Factbook).

•It is Politically divided into thirty-six states and Abuja is its official capital since 1991
when it was moved from Lagos. Still Lagos remains the financial, commercial, and
diplomatic center of the country because of its adequate infrastructure.
•Due to the three main environmental regions in Nigeria (savanna,, tropical forests,
and coastal wetland). The cultures of people in Nigeria is greatly affected.
•But Nigerian clothing truly reflects its diverse ethnic culture around the world. And
they struggle to wear their attire because it has a special meaning to them. It is a
symbol of respect unto their culture.
Nigerian Culture
Nigerian culture is multi ethnic as the people of Nigeria
•It includes varieties in types of clothing because there are different groups of people living in the country.
What is common in their dressing style in the conservativeness.
•It gives a lot of value to different types of arts which includes ivory carving, grass weaving, wood carving,
leather, calabash, pottery, painting, cloth weaving and, glass and metal works.
•Nigerian culture values its guests. They treat them with maximum hospitality, care and warmth.
•It is a wonderful country with complex history and a culture that would fascinate any visitor

Nigerian culture dominates in Men.
•Very few women are active in politics and professional careers.
•In some parts women are locked away if another male visits.
•Handing things to adults or elders, touching anything or anyone with your left
hand is seen as an insult. This is considered as a taboo because you wipe your
Butt with your left hand.

Nigerian fashion and culture is reflected well in its clothing
•There are several types of clothing as there are different groups of people in Nigeria.
•What is common in their dressing style in the conservativeness.
•There are several Nigerian clothing fashions for both men and women which are unique and attractive.
•Some of materials used to prepare dresses in Nigeria are:

•Adire
•Lace
•Dry lace
•French lace
•Jacquard
•Ankara
•Kente
•Guinea
•Aso Eko
•tie dye
Jacquard
Jacquard is fabric that has been made by shiny threads and
non-shiny threads using Jacquard’s loom.
It is very luxurious and useful in
making Nigerian Fashions.
Women in Nigeria wear Buba, Kaba, Iro,
gele, and iborun or ipele which are
made from Jacquard, Ankara and
Adire materials. The men also wear
Buba, fila, sokoto, abeti-aja and
agbada and western attires.

Ankara
you Ankara is another material which can
lift your spirits. It is also found in many
African countries. A lot of closets are
filled with Ankara items because it adds
favor to any outfit any day and any
time in Nigeria. It is also very
fashionable to wear. It is easy to have
clothing sewn from these materials.
You only go to a tailor and describe
what want.
Adire
•Adire is a unique one that is made by the Yoruba
ethnic group using hand knotted cloths that
have been dyed in indigo. They make the latest
Nigerian fashions.
•The art of making Adire has been used by many
generations.

Lace
•Lace is an openwork fabric made out of the finest
quality materials. They are used in the Latest
Nigerian fashions. They are used to make both attires
and home décor to enhance the beauty of homes.
Dry Lace
•Dry lace is another fashionable African quality fabric which
includes all types of other materials such as Ankara, wax prints,
head ties, Aso oke that are popular in most Aso Ebi textiles. It is
made in Switzerland and the best fashion for men.

French Lace
There are numerous French lace products in the market that
are made in France, and very popular in Nigeria. You can find
both finest and biggest French lace selections in Nigerian
tailors. Wearing this kind of laces is considered fashionable.
Other types of laces include: Chantilly lace, Robbin lace,
Needle lace Brussels, Cutwork or Whitework lace, Tape lace,
knotted lace, crocheted lace, knitted lace, Machine made lace,
Chemical lace and others.
Nigerian Fashion And Clothing
Nigerian Fashion is quite interesting.
•There are different types of clothes, including both
traditional and western clothes. They embrace
wearing their traditional clothes and they are
valuable during their ceremonies.
•In the North, Nigerian dresses are primarily worn to
work.
•In the south, western attire is more predominant.
People wear suits, skirts and blouses, baseball caps
and other dresses.
•Nigerians also dress in more western influenced
clothing including dresses, suits, skirts, blouses, Tshirts and baseball caps.

Buba is a loose clothing in Nigeria. It
is a loose neck blouse with long
sleeves that reaches down a little
below the waist.

Kaba
Kaba is a Nigerian single-piece
dress that originates in Ghana but
common in African Attire. It is
worn by most Nigerian women on
everyday basis. These dresses can
have different styles.
Iro or skirt
Iro or skirt is the bottom part of clothing, which is a rectangular piece of cloth that is usually
wrapped around the waist

Gele or headpiece
Gele or headpiece is a piece of clothing commonly known as a headgear. It can be worn in a
variety of different ways for different looks.

Iborun or ipele
This is a scarf that is either tied around the neck or just can be put
diagonally across the body.
Nigerian Men Fashion
The cultural Nigerian men
clothing include:

Buba
Sokoto
Fila
abbeti-aja ipele
agbada

Buba
a loose shirt that goes down till
halfway down the thighs
Sokoto
Similar to the pants or trousers.
It covers the lower part of the
body
Fila
a round Traditional cap cut to
slide on the head
Abbeti-Aja ipele
another type of cap with longer
sides

Agbada
a festive clothing
that comprises a
buba and sokoto.
Fashion is the basic fabric of society. Even if you do not like following fashion trends, you have to
admit that there's something to be said for a particular style of clothing that can move millions of
people around the world to dress in it.

  • 2. •Nigerian fashion and culture is unique and attractive. First of all, Nigeria is found in the western part of Africa. along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and just north of the equator. It is bordered on the west by Benin, on the north by Niger and Chad, and on the east by Cameroon. •Nigeria has more than 250 ethnic tribes. The most dominant ethnic groups are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. The Hausa are found in the Northern part of the country and their attire are similar to the Fulani ethnic group because they are two distinct groups in the Northern part of Nigeria.  The Igbo are found in the East of the country. Their most popular designs are Indian George, and head scarves. The Yoruba of southwestern part of Nigeria are particularly noted for their exquisite fashion taste. They celebrate their marriages, birthdays, even funerals in grand, opulent style with Aso Ebi attires.
  • 3. •Nigeria has the largest population of all the countries in Africa with a total population of 152,217,341 (according to the CIA World Factbook). •It is Politically divided into thirty-six states and Abuja is its official capital since 1991 when it was moved from Lagos. Still Lagos remains the financial, commercial, and diplomatic center of the country because of its adequate infrastructure. •Due to the three main environmental regions in Nigeria (savanna,, tropical forests, and coastal wetland). The cultures of people in Nigeria is greatly affected. •But Nigerian clothing truly reflects its diverse ethnic culture around the world. And they struggle to wear their attire because it has a special meaning to them. It is a symbol of respect unto their culture.
  • 4. Nigerian Culture Nigerian culture is multi ethnic as the people of Nigeria •It includes varieties in types of clothing because there are different groups of people living in the country. What is common in their dressing style in the conservativeness. •It gives a lot of value to different types of arts which includes ivory carving, grass weaving, wood carving, leather, calabash, pottery, painting, cloth weaving and, glass and metal works. •Nigerian culture values its guests.   • 6. Jacquard Jacquard is fabric that has been made by shiny threads and non-shiny threads using Jacquard’s loom. It is very luxurious and useful in making Nigerian Fashions. Women in Nigeria wear Buba, Kaba, Iro, gele, and iborun or ipele which are made from Jacquard, Ankara and Adire materials. The men also wear Buba, fila, sokoto, abeti-aja and agbada and western attires. Ankara you Ankara is another material which can lift your spirits. It is also found in many African countries. A lot of closets are filled with Ankara items because it adds favor to any outfit any day and any time in Nigeria. It is also very fashionable to wear. It is easy to have clothing sewn from these materials. You only go to a tailor and describe what want.
  • 7. Adire •Adire is a unique one that is made by the Yoruba ethnic group using hand knotted cloths that have been dyed in indigo. They make the latest Nigerian fashions. •The art of making Adire has been used by many generations. Lace •Lace is an openwork fabric made out of the finest quality materials. They are used in the Latest Nigerian fashions. They are used to make both attires and home décor to enhance the beauty of homes.

Dry Lace •Dry lace is another fashionable African quality fabric which includes all types of other materials such as Ankara, wax prints, head ties, Aso oke that are popular in most Aso Ebi textiles. It is made in Switzerland and the best fashion for men. French Lace There are numerous French lace products in the market that are made in France, and very popular in Nigeria. You can find both finest and biggest French lace selections in Nigerian tailors. Wearing this kind of laces is considered fashionable. Other types of laces include: Chantilly lace, Robbin lace, Needle lace Brussels, Cutwork or Whitework lace, Tape lace, knotted lace, crocheted lace, knitted lace, Machine made lace, Chemical lace and others.

Iro or skirt Iro or skirt is the bottom part of clothing, which is a rectangular piece of cloth that is usually wrapped around the waist Gele or headpiece Gele or headpiece is a piece of clothing commonly known as a headgear. It can be worn in a variety of different ways for different looks. Iborun or ipele This is a scarf that is either tied around the neck or just can be put diagonally across the body.

Nigerian Men Fashion The cultural Nigerian men clothing include: Buba Sokoto Fila abbeti-aja ipele agbada Buba a loose shirt that goes down till halfway down the thighs Sokoto Similar to the pants or trousers.
