Just because Nigerians wear their traditional clothes, it doesn‟t mean they can‟t

wear modern fashion. Nigeria also hastheir own fashion designers, popular jewelry

stores, clothes shops, and other things that are related to up-to-date fashion. Modern

fashion is really important in Nigeria. New fashion is important to the people of Nigeria,

because through fashion, women and men feel that they will be accepted by the society.

Current fashion in Nigeria has greatly impacted the world.Recently Nigerians had a

fashion show in the country which had an audience filled with international buyers who

came to see their clothes.

In Nigeria, about 40% of the Nigerians wear their up-to-date clothes. Nigerians

care about current fashion, because they want to fit in with their friends at school,

college, and work. Some Nigerians don‟t even care about modern fashion and don‟t do it

intentionally, but since they make a lot of money, the Nigerians can afford the current

clothing. A reason the Nigerians wear it is because they think that traditional clothing

looks a little too old for them and that‟s why the Nigerians wear the most trendy clothing.

Nigerian‟s have their own fashion designers that design up-to-date clothes and are

well known among the Nigerians. One designer is Lisa Folawiyo. One of her clotheslines

is called „Jewels‟. She presented this in London. Another designer that is popular among

the fashion industry is Jennifer Adighije. One of her clotheslines is „Agu and the House

of Silk.‟ This line is presented in London as well. Ituen Basi is also another famous
Nigerian designer. A clothesline she created is called „African Barbie.‟ This clothesline

was presented in France. All of these designers have done a really important job for

Nigeria, which is making new clothes for Nigeria‟s modern fashion.

Some Nigerian designers in Nigeria either hand draw their ideas/clothes or use the

computer and instead design the clothes technically. Although very few use the computer,

because the designers find it harder for them. So many of the Nigerian designers prefer to

hand draw their ideas/clothes on paper. Most likely, they keep all of their ideas together

in a notebook or a folder. The Nigerians would keep their drawings in a very secure spot,

because Nigerian designers all have their competition and don‟t want their hands getting

on them. Something that inspires the designers are the things they see every dayin their

life such as plants, animals, paintings, and art. Just normal things can get the designers

starting up on a new clothesline. When the Nigerian designers get inspired, they try to jot

it down right away, because they won‟t want to forget their idea.

In Nigeria there are popular fashion companies, magazines, shoes, and jewelry

stores. Some popular fashion companies in Nigeria are Ara Kulture. Ara Kulture is well

known for their jewelry and the accessories they sell in their store for teens, women, and

men. Another fashion company is Frank Dessy Vogue. These fashion companies

sometimes organize fashion shows and other events that include fashion. Some well-

known magazines in Nigeria are the Genevieve Magazine. This magazine is mostly based

on celebrities, social life in Nigeria, the most modern style, body features, and beauty.

Another magazine in Nigeria is the TW magazine. This magazine is based on interviews
with fashion modelers, important weddings with celebrities, and relationships. There are

a lot of shoe companies in Nigeria, but only some are really popular. A shoe company

that is really popular is the Sodissir Footwear Ltd. This shoe company sells shoes for both

genders and all type of ages. Another shoe company is Harry Mosco Shoe Maker. This

store sells shoes for women and men. The only ages the stores sell their shoes for are only

for the adults. The most important part of an outfit is the jewelry which of course the

Nigerians have their stores for. One really popular store is called the Bead Shop. This

store mostly just sells jewelry they beaded themselves for both women and men. Another

popular jewelry store in Nigeria is Diamond Considered Ventures Ltd. This store also

sells jewelry for women and men and only for adults. All these stores in Nigeria are very

popular, but the one I have listed aren‟t the only ones.

In Nigeria, current fashion is very important to 40% of the population in Nigeria.

The Nigerians would do anything to have the most fashionable clothes. Some of the

people in Nigeria wear their latest clothes and some of the Nigerians wear their

traditional clothes. Whatever you wear in Nigeria is of course by choice. “Fashion is a

language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.” This quote is from the German

designer Karl Lagerfeld. This quote reflects the current fashion in Nigeria, because

whatever modern clothing they wear, it is to show how they are feeling that day. This just

shows how unique the Nigerians are.
