Newspaper Logo Research
The logos here are the newspaper logos I have been researching so that I could have a
better overview on how to go about producing my own logo for my regional newspaper. The
regional newspaper Shropshire Star uses alliteration whilst the other newspaper does not
use this technique. The advantage of using alliteration is that the name of the newspaper
has lyrical flow and would easier to remember for a consumer whilst the other newspaper
use more powerful and simplistic names. The Sun is very simple and bold without any other
techniques used which is why it is so effective to retain consumers because it is easy to
remember. The Express & Star, Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph uses none of the
features of alliteration, they use longer names rather than short and simple names like the
Sun. Daily mail is longer to think of compared to The Sun but is simple enough to remember
and leave an impression on a consumer of newspaper media text. The Daily Telegraph uses
a much longer name and logo however the name itself is unique compared to most
newspapers because a telegraph is an old form of fax basically but because the object itself
is so old, the consumer will remember it far more because of how much it stands out from
other newspaper names. The Express & Star on the other hand is quite boring to an extent
because of the plain font for the logo but the name as well isn’t simple and bold or use
alliteration but I think it is because the newspaper spans the West Midlands, this would be
the Hypodermic Needle by Hork Hiemer because the newspaper would have been
constantly thrown at consumers. The hypodermic needle would have been reinforced as the
uses and gratifications model by Stuart Hall dictates that consumers will search for the news
thus reinforces the name of the newspaper upon the consumers. Moral panic theory also
suggests that the audience will search the news for moral issues which is so highly included
in today’s news.
In conclusion, based on my evaluation of the newspaper logos and names of the five
newspapers above I have decided my regional newspaper name to be Shropshire Staffer.
This is because I find the use of alliteration better than a short and simple name plus the use
of the word Shropshire strengthens the ties of the newspaper to be regional in my county.
So the use of the county name and alliteration both strengthens the newspaper name. To
further reinforce my newspaper name, the logo will have a similar colour scheme to the
counties.
