Water is vital for life but scarce in many parts of the world. Pollution from construction waste, litter, and untreated wastewater is contaminating lakes and rivers in Vietnam. While water treatment plants can help mitigate pollution, currently only 25% of industrial parks treat their wastewater before discharging it into rivers. Individual actions like using water filters and conserving water can also help address water issues.

NHỊP CẦU THẾ GIỚI
From Mr Mark Sayer - Principal of BVIS Hanoi - Royal City Campus
Thông điệp từ thầy Mark Sayer - Hiệu trưởng trường Quốc tế BVIS Hà Nội - Royal City
Seldom does a week go by when there
is not something to life in Vietnam,
and particularly in Ha Noi, when one
is not amazed, surprised or moved.
One such occasion has been witnessed
whilst en-route to work from the
north of the city to Thanh Xuan
District. This week, the streets have
been lined with people, young and
old, wishing to pay their respects to General Vo Nguyen Giap,
who died last Friday at the eminent age of 102. His character,
tenacity and perseverance have been very much in my mind, as
I am currently reading Stanley Karnow’s Pulitzer Prize-win-
ning work on the History of Vietnam. General Giap’s adult
life followed perhaps an unusual path from humble begin-
nings as a history teacher to appearing in the pantheon of
great military leaders, having masterminded strategic and
nation-changing victories over the French and US forces. But
the show of public honour as I passed by was also very moving
and it has shown to me not only the esteem and honour in
which the general and former Deputy Prime Minister was
held but also the character of the Vietnamese people. We, as
expat teachers and staff, are privileged to be in Ha Noi to
witness such an event and to share in it in some small way.
The study of History is in itself a fascinating exercise. George
Bernard Shaw, famous British essayist and playwright of the
early 20th century, said, “We learn from history that we learn
nothing from history.” Whether one agrees with this state-
ment or not, surely the reason we study the subject and look
to the lives of our forebears is to celebrate greatness and to
emulate the personality traits of fine men and women, strong,
brave and true, from throughout the ages and to ensure that
we are able to learn from their characters and experiences.
History helps us to know ourselves better in the present and
to make a more profound contribution to the future.
I wish you all a very happy weekend.

3. From Mrs Sarah Wild - Deputy Head Secondary
Thông điệp từ cô Sarah Wild - Hiệu phó Khối Trung học
This week was a monitoring week,
spending time looking at the progress
of all Secondary students. On Monday,
I spent a day talking to each Year 7
student individually. We looked at the
quality of their written work and in
particular the quality of their written
English across the curriculum. All Year
7 students now have two targets, which
they will need to work towards after
half-term in order to make further
progress. A review day for Years 8 and 9 is planned for the first
week back after half-term. The leadership team has also been into
lessons this week to observe the progress of students in each
subject. I feel that over the past 7 weeks, pupils have settled well
and have got more organised, in particular with their homework.
It is not easy to start at a new school, and for Year 7 in particular
it is an even greater challenge, as they are making the transition
from Primary (based mainly in one classroom with a single teach-
er) into a Secondary school environment. In Secondary, students
have to move around all day and have the correct equipment for
each lesson. I believe that they are now much more organised and
that all are making good progress in lessons.
Next week, as you know, is Trip Week and we are now pleased to
be offering the opportunity to all our Secondary students to take
part in a residential trip this early in their time at the school.
Learning beyond the classroom is a large part of our curriculum.
It develops team building, resilience, patience, enquiry – in fact
many of our core values as indicated in our Aide Memoire. It is
something that I strongly believe in and is highly valued in the
British education system. I would like to take this opportunity to
remind all parents and students that buses will be leaving at 7am
from the school. It promises to be an excellent 4 days away that
will live long in the memory.

4. Good schools around the globe are
established, maintained and improved
with a huge amount of hard work from
support staff, something seldom seen by
the wider community. I thought it
important this week to congratulate
and celebrate our support staff who
work tirelessly each day to make our
school a better place for the children to
learn. At the end of Week 7, after having
two very successful events, the Moon
Festival and Book Week, we wouldn’t be set up for assemblies,
have our pitches and playground marked for games, be using a
clean splash pool and sand-pit, despite the weather, and also have
such clean classrooms, equipment and learning environment into
which we welcome the children every day without them.
I would also like to thank our brilliant team of teaching assistants.
Since they started supporting and working with me from the
beginning of August, they have been an invaluable asset to the
school. When the teaching staff arrived, they were delighted to
have display boards up and ready for them, resources prepared
and someone who could help them with their ideas for making
the classrooms into what they have become today: lively and
vibrant learning areas. However, what I and they didn’t know at
that time was just how well they would be supporting your
children’s learning in class and around the school. They are
extremely well-liked by the children and I know that you as
parents value their contributions too. They are able to translate
diary messages and help children get organised and they always
speak in English first to help the children. The TAs have been
working with individual children and in support of larger groups,
guided by their class teacher and taking care of their welfare
around the campus. Our TAs value your children, and we value
them. Positive working relationships therefore make for a good
school and therefore one that continually strives to improve.
