The nervous system has two main divisions - the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS contains the brain and spinal cord, and is involved in processing sensory information and coordinating voluntary motor functions. The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of the body and its organs using nerves, carrying sensory information to the CNS and motor commands away from it. Within the CNS, the cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and involved in higher functions like thought, the cerebellum coordinates movement and balance, and the brainstem regulates involuntary functions essential for survival.
