The document summarizes a discussion on enterprise cloud computing that took place at the World Summit of Cloud Computing. It discusses three approaches that were proposed: [1] establishing a "standards body" to develop unified cloud interface standards, [2] adopting existing proven cloud technologies as standards, and [3] taking a "customer driven" approach where industry use cases define the standards. While each approach has benefits, a hybrid approach is suggested that incorporates elements of all three.

The Adoption of Cloud Technology by Enterprises - A Whitepaper by RapidValueRapidValue
If we go back in time, people were dependent on the physical computer storage or servers in order to run their programs. Now, with the introduction of cloud computing, people, organizations and enterprises are able to access their programs through the Internet. Cloud computing is gaining prominence, rapidly, and the popularity is growing, each day. Cloud computing is big business, today.According to PC Magazine, it was, already, generating around $100 billion a year in 2012. It is forecasted to increase up to $270 billion by the year 2020.
Enterprises and organizations, these days, are relying heavily on the cloud services and cloud platforms to obtain resources on-demand and that too, in an automated manner.
Organizations can, now, only pay for the resources that they use. Enterprises, also,
relinquish unnecessary resources with the help of using a self-service portal. This serves as a big cost-effective solution, as you can eliminate the need for investing a huge sum of money as capital investment.
This paper addresses the primary reasons for the enterprises migrating to the cloud infrastructure, various types of cloud deployment (technology & services) models IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud, feature comparison of three popular cloud platforms - AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and some examples of how enterprises and consumers are using the cloud technology.
As enterprise adoption of cloud computing accelerates, driven by compelling advantages of higher efficiency and lower costs, rapid deployment and elastic scalability, organizations must have a strategy and plan for moving to the cloud. How can organizations get started on the evolution to cloud computing? This presentation explores how enterprise IT can move toward a cloud computing model, building on a foundation of virtualization, engineered systems and management automation.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Topic - Getting Ready for the Cloud – Technology
In this session Nati will describe what is the latest developments in the industry on cloud computing, and where he feels this will be going. He will also share his experience on how to design and deploy enterprise applications in a cloud/grid computing platform, what to take into account while developing or deploying applications on the cloud, and demonstrate how to transition applications to run on the Cloud without needing to completely re-architect them. Standard Application Servers as we've known them only partially address enterprises' needs for scalability. As a result, a new class of application servers has emerged, focused on massive scalability. In this session, we will explore some of the common characteristics of these servers while looking at how to migrate an existing Java EE web app to a scale-out application server, relatively seamlessly.
Included is a 10-minute demo on turning an existing tier-based application into a tierless scaled out application running on the Amazon EC2 Cloud. In this live demo session, we will also use the cloud-based environment to demonstrate how you can add dynamic scaling, self healing and improved performance with almost no changes to your code.

451 Group Increasing Cloud Application PerformanceCDNetworks
IT is increasingly being consumed ‘as a service.’ This is why 451 Research expects the SaaS portion of the cloud to reach $11.1bn in 2012 and continue to grow to $14.8bn in 2014.
But, there is a network attached to that cloud, and networks don’t always behave well. The cloud has performance problems stemming from latency and availability issues, especially if you have customers or employees in emerging markets including China, Russia, and India.
Applications such as CRM, ERP, content management and collaboration, all the way to archiving and backup storage services can be impacted by network performance. How do you accelerate your cloud applications to ensure a good customer or employee experience? Cloud Computing is an information technology gold rush. Everything from social media and smart phones to streaming video and additive games come from the cloud. This revolution has also driven many to wonder how they can retool themselves to take advantage of this massive shift. Many in IT see the technology as an opportunity to accelerate their careers but in their attempt to navigate their cloud computing future, the question of what type of training, vendor-neutral or vendor-specific, is right for them
The Federal government today is in the midst of a revolution. The revolution is challenging the norms of government by introducing new ways of serving the people. New models for creating services and delivering information; new policies and procedures that are redefining federal acquisition and what it means to be a federal system integrator. This revolution also lacks the physical and tangible artifacts of the past. Its ephemeral nature, global expanse and economic impact all combine in a tidal wave of change. This revolution is called cloud computing.
Since announcing its “Cloud First” policy in 2010, the Federal government has correctly identified cloud computing as a way to reduce costs and improve the use of existing assets, and has accordingly prioritized its adoption. It has also taken judicious steps to protect Federal networks from nefarious cyber-attacks and promote the dissemination of best practices for cybersecurity. The Federal government has also embraced mobility as a means to conduct work from any location. But until now, the implementation of these initiatives has been fragmented and lacked coordination across Federal agencies. This paper offers a framework for integrating these programs in a way that enables the Federal government to realize the economic, technological, and mission-effectiveness benefits of cloud services while simultaneously meeting current Federal cybersecurity
requirements. It advocates shifting from a compliance-based cybersecurity paradigm to
one that is risk-based and focusing on how to most effectively secure their implementation of cloud services.

Improving Cybersecurity and Resilience Through Acquisition Emile Monette GSAGovCloud Network
When the government purchases products or services with inadequate in-built “cybersecurity,” the risks created persist throughout the lifespan of the item purchased. The lasting effect of inadequate cybersecurity in acquired items is part of what makes acquisition reform so important to achieving cybersecurity and resiliency.
Currently, government and contractors use varied and nonstandard practices, which make it difficult to consistently manage and measure acquisition cyber risks across different organizations.
Meanwhile, due to the growing sophistication and complexity of ICT and the global ICT supply chains, federal agency information systems are increasingly at risk of compromise, and agencies need guidance to help manage ICT supply chain risks

BCL is tailored for the rapid delivery of enterprise business capability. It combines multiple, disjointed oversight processes into a single process. It recognizes that technology rapidly evolves and changes, and consequently, BCL mandates rapid capability delivery – within
eighteen months or less of program initiation. BCL is outcome-based, and modeled on best commercial practices. The process allows for the fact that not all solutions are purely technical. The entire DOTMLPF (Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership
and education, Personnel and Facilities) spectrum of potential solutions are considered.
Intrusion Detection on Public IaaS - Kevin L. JacksonGovCloud Network
Cloud computing is driving the business of information technology today.
“A recent Gartner survey on the future of IT services found that only 38 percent of all organizations surveyed indicate cloud services use today. However, 80 percent of organizations said that they intend to use cloud services in some form within 12 months, including 55 percent of the organizations not doing so today.“ (Gartner, Inc, 2013)
As companies rush to adopt cloud, however, information technology (IT) security sometimes seems to be an afterthought.
The goal of this paper is to provide a survey of the current state of IT security within public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service providers. After first providing a cloud computing overview, the paper will focus on the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) deployment model, the typical home of IaaS intrusion detection components. The Gartner Cloud Use Case Framework will then be introduced as it will also serve as the framework for this survey. An in-depth review of public cloud intrusion detection studies, options and expert observations will then follow. The paper will then offer the authors conclusions and cloud computing IDS recommendations for enterprises considering a move to the cloud.
A Framework for Cloud Computing Adoption in South African GovernmentGovCloud Network
Technology adoption is always a critical concern in organizations (private and public). South African government experienced this encounter when adopted Open Source Software (OSS) with the objective to reduce ICT services costs among others. The implementation of OSS in SA government has faced several challenges such as user resistance, human factor, support and funding. As a result of these challenges cost reduction has not been fully achieved. Cost reduction issue ultimately affects implementation of other government programmes such as those who yields job creation, better education, and improving health, etc. The potential alternative to address the same objective as aimed by OSS is Cloud Computing adoption. Cloud Computing promise to offer the SA government more advantages OSS. This study explore the feasibility of Cloud Computing adoption as an alternative to enable cost reduction, effectiveness and efficient of IT services in SA government as was aimed by OSS initiative.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

10. “Adopt Proven Technology” Approach
General Disagreement with “Standards Body” approach
External vs. Internal Cloud Competition
• Legacy applications to the cloud
o High value for Enterprise CIO
o Worst scenario for External cloud providers
• External cloud best practices (like EC2) result in Enterprise cloud implementation
and management applications and tools
• Internal metering vs. External implementation
o Lack of metering tools
o Lack of consistent metrics
o Inability to build Internal vs. External ROI
Cloud Application definition
• Entire application in cloud,
• Single service in cloud
• Mashed-up services in cloud
• 3Tera Applogic “Automation Bundle”
Adopt existing Cloud-VM standard
• Distributed Management Task Force - Open Virtualization Format (DMTF-OVF)
• Reservoir Project
11. “Customer Driven” Approach
Technology doesn’t set standards. Industry use cases set the
standards
Main Cloud Value = Reduced Cost
• Solid Cloud ROI model required
Define Interoperability Requirements from Customer Viewpoint
• Disaster Recovery
o Between Enterprise and External Cloud
o Between External Clouds
Customer Driven Standards & Interoperability
• Identify industry cloud needs via Web/Email Survey, Interviews, etc.
• Build Internal/External Cloud ROI models
• Large Industry Customers cooperatively drive cloud vendor standards
