Updated slides for 2016 presentation on innovation in large organizations, why microservices and Docker can be useful, thoughts on monitoring for large complex architectures, some discussion of new topics - serverless architectures AWS Lambda and teraservices.
Cloud is recognized as facilitating “speed-to-market” – and for its ability to drive business agility. This is because cloud supports rapid experimentation and innovation by allowing companies to quickly try and even adopt new solutions without significant up-front costs. The Cloud can be a highly agile wrapper around different systems, different behavior and bringing it all together in an engagement cycle. By changing the way people interact with technology, cloud enables new forms of consumer engagement, expand collaboration across the value chain and bring innovation to companies’ core business models.
Ambiguity and uncertainty are synonymous when cloud security is discussed. As organizations transition to the cloud, security must be prepared to handle the new and evolving threats impacting cloud resources. Additional business changes affecting the cloud transition; legal, privacy, mobility, etc must also be considered when developing your overall security strategy. This talk will do a quick breakdown on defining the cloud as it stands today, along with security’s role in the cloud, and how security will evolve in a world that is ‘cloud-centric’ and where the cloud strategy will lead us within the next ten years. The talk will also provide a plan of action for building a cloud security strategy and key considerations when preparing your roadmap in a secure cloud-centric future.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Editor's Notes
Born when the ipad was only a year and a half old, and nobody really knew what to do with it…
2011 was the year that angry birds really took off.
2 billion downloads across all platforms and counting!
CONSOLIDATION!
October 2010 saw the global economic crises really kick in with the collapse of Lehman Brothers creating a chain of events that lead to the UK economy only showing positive growth
Savvis bought by CenturyLink in April 2011 for USD$2.5 billion
Terremark bought by Verizon
NTT acquired Dimension Data, who acquired opsource
AT&T no longer in the MQ
Navisite acquired by Time Warner and no longer in MQ
OpSource acquired by Dimension Data in 2011 (owned by NTT)
Datapipe no longer in the MQ – AWS focus
MediaTemple dropped out of MQ, and acquired by GoDaddy in 2013
Carpathia dropped out of MQ
Amazon add more capacity to EC2 EVERY DAY than the whole of Amazon.com used in 2010 when it was a $10bn dollar company.
What is it that has made Amazon so successful, how did they do it? Principles were open, and of constant innovation (and price reductions) as their economies of scale continue to drive costs down.
Nedbank use the system to alert customers when they have made a card transaction – currently runs on the servers in Ireland.
I was with Atilla Narin, head of product who said an AZ in Africa was ‘only a matter of time’ , and I think Cape Town is an obvious choice given the fast fibre optic connections that land on the coast here.
The London Hackney carriage business, operating since 1621, licenses granted since 1662.
Allowed to roam the streets looking for fares, as apposed to booking in advance or going into a taxi office. Also operate a metered service, based on time of day and distance travelled. Pride themselves on doing the’ knowledge’ a test designed to demonstrate an intimate knowledge of the geography of London streets and buildings – important when Google Streetview and Satnav was not available but completely irrelevant today.
Still requied by law to have a boot large enough to store a bail of hay for the horse that pulled the early versions.
You already get a sense this is an industry ripe for a bit of disruption….
If it rains forget it, if you live in South London like I used to forget it, and if you are lucky enough to find one you have a compulsory half hour lesson in international politics and world diplomcy because that must be part of the knowledge given, and I’m yet to speak to a cabbie who isnt massively qualified in those subjects, which is suprising as he sits in a taxi all day. ANYWAY, another story!
2011 saw a number of hailing apps such as Hailo and GetTaxi which allowed you to track them and even pay them. Drivers signed up as essentially it was another way to get fares. This industry was clearly ripe for disruption and these apps signalled the beginning of the end for an industry that was already circling the drain…
Uber now includes a critical new part to the process – METERING. Uber now in 32 countries and disrputing the licensed taxi business globally!
FBI and cloud
Netflix now account for 1/3 of all internet traffic
2010 saw the economic downturn in the US and Europe drive IT to reduce capex spending and start to look at opex alternatives
The industry has been obsessed over the last few years with barriers to entry
Entire markets now driven by opensource
BUT there is open and there is OPEN
