IT is increasingly being consumed ‘as a service.’ This is why 451 Research expects the SaaS portion of the cloud to reach $11.1bn in 2012 and continue to grow to $14.8bn in 2014.
But, there is a network attached to that cloud, and networks don’t always behave well. The cloud has performance problems stemming from latency and availability issues, especially if you have customers or employees in emerging markets including China, Russia, and India.
Applications such as CRM, ERP, content management and collaboration, all the way to archiving and backup storage services can be impacted by network performance. How do you accelerate your cloud applications to ensure a good customer or employee experience? Join the webcast and learn how HighQ, Thomsons Online Benefits, and others have leveraged CDN technology.

Collaboration & document sharing
“To maintain our hard-fought
platform for law firms and banks reputation, we sought to address
the issue of global Internet
performance as quickly as
possible. We didn’t want it to
limit our ability to serve our
international users.”
- Saviz Izadpanah, IT Director, HighQ Solutions
• Cloud hosted in London. Slow web page loading and document transfer speeds outside the UK—
particularly in the US and Australia
CHALLENGES • Impeded collaboration between large clients’ global offices
• Potential threat to reputation for delivering a responsive service
• Rejected hosting data centers outside UK because of high costs of building and managing
36. CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY
"Global organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on cloud-based
solutions and, by using CDNetworks, we’re now able to give them the high
performance they expect from anywhere in the world"
- Saviz Izadpanah, IT Director, HighQ Solutions
• Accelerating HighQ’s product offerings with Dynamic Web Acceleration resulted in drastically
better end-user experiences in both Australia and the US. In fact, download speeds in these
RESULTS locations increased by 2,000% and 1,000%, respectively.
• Between Australia and the UK, document downloads and page loading speeds accelerated
from 50Kbps to 1000Kbps per second.
37. CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY
Benefits administration platform providing a cloud-based
solution for organizations to design, administer and manage
the very best possible benefits schemes for their employees
• Customers have employees accessing the service
from everywhere around the globe
“We realized that we needed help
• Large, strategic customers’ China employees with reducing latency for our
experienced extremely high latency customers, especially those with
employees in emerging markets.”
CHALLENGES • Highly dynamic application data. Caching not an
option for personalized employee benefits -Mark Kay
information Head of Technology Infrastructure, Thomsons
• Cloud hosted in London. Planning to build more
costly datacenters with replication, but
performance would still be a problem
38. CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY
Anytime highly personalized content needs to be delivered from
centralized data centers or even the cloud to remote
locations, latency could be an issue.
• Under 3 second load time for web
application pages
RESULTS • Application now useable around the
globe
• Consistent user experience

SEMI is the global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chain for the
micro- and nano-electronics industries, including:
• Semiconductors, Photovoltaics (PV), High-Brightness LED
• Flat Panel Display (FPD), Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)
• Printed and flexible electronics, Related micro- and nano-electronics
“We didn’t know if there was a single CDN or Web hosting service provider who could help. Even if there were
one, would they be able to deliver services at a reasonable price?”
- Shawn Gordon, Director Global IT Operations and Technical Services, SEMI
• Cloud hosted on Amazon AWS
• Reduced IT staff and budget called for simplified IT infrastructure
• Switched from proprietary content management system to cloud-based Drupal for cost
CHALLENGES savings, but performance suffered
• Emerging market growth in China and India necessitated improved reliability and
higher performance of the website in those locations
• Existing CDN provider had no points of presence in China
40. CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY
China performance
with and without
CDNetworks
• 20 seconds
• High errors
• 9 seconds
• Low errors
“Not only did they have the capabilities and global reach we required, they could combine all their services and
regions into one simple plan. That’s the kind of operational simplicity and pricing visibility we needed.”
- Shawn Gordon, Director Global IT Operations and Technical Services, SEMI
• Cost savings:
• With 100+ points of presence from CDNetworks, they were able to consolidate web hosting to one
provider
RESULTS • Implemented Drupal for all 25 SEMI websites
• 100% uptime in China and globally due to CDNetworks understanding of the website and cloud
application rules in China

Compute and storage as a serviceCaaS is the provisioning of computing resources (access to raw compute or server capacity) on demand. CaaS providers offer the ability to rent rather than own IT resources. This cloud computing layer involves the delivery of virtual or physical resources as a service, priced via a consumption-based model, where usage is metered similar to a utility. Included within this segment is the platform attached storage used alongside the computing power for cloud infrastructure services.Pure-play cloud storage vendors provide cloud-based raw-capacity storage services used for unlimited on-demand file storage.

A total of 1,165 respondents involved in their company’s buying decisions participated in the July 10-26 survey, including 369 whose company currently uses public cloud. ChangeWave Research is a service of 451 Research.

Assume an enterprise will need 3k sq feet. In this hypothetical scenario, $4.5 to $7.5m to build in the one market. Doesn’t factor in risks associated with mis-calculation of capacity needs, costs of ongoing operation, and fluctuating demand and ever-changing regulatory/political environment that pose another set of risks.
The total MTDC market supply in Moscow is estimated to exceed 29,000 square meters of net space as of 1h 2012, growing to almost40 sq meters by 2013.MTDC service providers have different backgrounds, target customers and portfolios of services. Some are pure-play datacenter service providers offering traditional colocation services such as cabinets, cages, connectivity and on-site engineering support. Others, like CROC, are large system integrators with thousands of customers, 1,800 employees and revenue of $832m (2010). CROC’s customer base includes large banks, enterprises and government agencies. Capabilities of these services providers are very different, Eop= estimated operation square footage.
Say 100 Cabinets = 3,000 sqft. Then charge a fee per sqft $30 per sqft. Now apply a $ per kW cost. Lets assume $200 per kW which is roughly in the middle of everything I work on. At 5kW per cabinet, the user would require 500kW. Example below… Of course, cabinets may require some smaller and some larger circuits but this is just an average. Then add in your NRC (Non Reoccurring Costs) such as cabinet installs, cages, network cabling etc… Example:NRC - ? $200,000100 Cabinets @ $30 sqft = $1,080,000 year500kW = $876,000 yearNetwork Costs = $?Total = ~$2M per year at full utilization. Anecdotal data only on Russia and Brazil – emerging markets, less mature MTDC model. Operator expectations in Russia seem to be for quicker ROI, so costs could be double that of US market. Brazil is closer to US costs. But the remaining question then becomes: do I have the experience to manage negotiations and contracts in each emerging market?
Let’s build a hypothetical MNC that wants to build its revenues in Brazil, Russia, India, China. It has applications accessed by its employees and customers that need to perform better. Latency is one concern that has been impacting productivity and customer engagement
As measured from code running in end users’ browser that is downloaded from one of 200 sites using Cedexis’ tags on their sites. This measured performance from browsers on various Chinese networks trying to connect to different cloud providers. Note the wide variation. Simply putting the servers in a single city doesn’t address all the performance problems
