Narrative theories
1. Narrative Theory
Todorov’s Theory of Narrative
Equilibrium
DisequilibriumRestoration
Todorov believes that all narratives have
three parts to it. First there is a balance of
things then a problem occurs causing
disequilibrium. There the issue is solved and
there is restoration.
Levi-Strauss’ Theory of Narrative
Strauss’ theory is mainly
based around binary
opposition. He believes that
all conflict within a narrative
is caused by the opposition
between the characters.
Vladimir Propp’s Theory of Narrative
Propp believes that there are seven
character roles needed in order to
have a good narrative:
Hero
Villain
Dispatcher (someonewho send the hero on their
journey)
Doughnut(provides hero with help)
Helper (assists hero)
Heroine/Princess
False hero (starts off as a good person then turns
bad at the end)
