The Narmada Bachao Andolan was a social movement started in 1985 against the construction of large dams on the Narmada River, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The movement was initiated by Medha Patkar and protested the displacement of over 250,000 people living in the river valley without adequate rehabilitation. Major protests organized by the movement included a 36-day march between states and a sit-in at the Prime Minister's residence, which led the World Bank to cancel funding for the projects in 1993. Construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam continued and it was eventually completed in 2017.
