Green Lands Blue Waters is a regional collaborative working to improve water quality in the Upper Mississippi River Basin through the use of Continuous Living Cover on agricultural lands. Continuous Living Cover refers to keeping fields covered with summer crops, cover crops, and perennials year-round to improve soil health, water quality, and provide other benefits. The group is researching the use of Kernza, a perennial grain developed by The Land Institute, at several sites in Minnesota to evaluate its ability to reduce nitrate leaching compared to annual row crops like corn. The research involves partnerships between universities, non-profits, government agencies, and local communities.
