Manchester By The Sea Analysis
Manchester by the Sea is dynamic, emotional, and tragic. The film is a story about a man, Lee
Chandler, who becomes responsible for his teenage nephew, Patrick Chandler, after his brother
dies of Congestive Heart Failure. Lee is forced to leave his small apartment and handyman
position in Quincy, Massachusetts until his affairs in Manchester by the Sea, MA are in order.
Roughly halfway through the movie, Lee has a flashback of the fire he accidentally started that
took the lives of his three healthy children, and ultimately separated him and his wife.
Considering this tragedy, Lee struggles coping with his newly given responsibility of being
Patrick s Guardian. One would be hard pressed to watch all two hours of this movie and not feel
any emotion. Manchester by the Sea provides its viewers with a flawless delivery of a dramatic
story and powerful message with brilliant actors. Lee Chandler s story could to tug at anyone s
heart, given his dramatic history. Few individuals possess the strength to cope with a similar
catastrophe. The director of the movie, Kenneth Lonergan, administers drama in a creative way that
keeps the onlooker roped in for the duration of the film. Todd McCarthy, a renowned movie critic
from The Hollywood Reporter, defines Manchester by the Sea in his movie review as A dense,
expert drama of broken New England Families (McCarthy). It is impossible to argue with
McCarthy s bottom line given its irrefutable accuracy. This is supported by numerous scenes,
including Lee s infamous flashback, Lee s encounter with his ex wife Randi on the streets of
Manchester by the Sea, and endless scenes entailing Patrick s uncertain fate. McCarthy provides
an effective synopsis of the film s drama in saying How the characters cope and relate after this
emotionally and psychologically fraught and often powerful, but the focus narrows down to Lee s
relationship with the teenage Patrick (McCarthy). More important than the crisis filled scenes in
the film is the dominant message conveyed by the director. In addition to the climatic nature of
Manchester by the Sea, Lonergan creatively facilitates an influential message for the observer to
take away. Lee s emotional struggles of his past clashing with his

Arguments Against Pseudonyms
The ever increasing amount of people utilizing the internet as a means of communication has led to
many interesting phenomena. One that can be easily observed on many online forums is the use of
pseudonyms instead of actual names. The ability to utilize pseudonyms when creating online
profiles allows people to protect their identities, enabling them to freely voice their opinions without
fear of retaliation. When browsing through online commentsections and social media, it is common
to come across people writing under pseudonyms. The reasons for using an alias can be many;
while there are people that utilize online anonymityas a way of shielding their personal life from
internetbacklash, others choose to abuse anonymity in order to spew... Show more content on

In the article Online Anonymity Protects Marginalized Groups, the author argues that online
anonymity is used by marginalized groups to preserve their privacy. The venues the author
refers to are the social networks Facebook and Google Plus, which have real name policies that
forbid the use of pseudonyms (Boyd, par. 7). The author attempts to answer if said policies
protect users or if they increase user vulnerability. She states that the stakeholders in this issue
are those most affected by prohibiting pseudonyms and nicknames, the vulnerable and
marginalized members of society such as abuse survivors, activists, LGBT [lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender] people, women, and young people (Boyd, par. 3). The values
attached to the issue are those of safety, as people often utilize pseudonyms to preserve their
physical and mental health, as well as that of their families (Boyd, par. 2). Boyd is against the
enforcement of real name policies because it exposes those who need protection, arguing that you
don t guarantee safety by stopping people from using pseudonyms, but you do undermine people
s safety by doing so (Boyd, par. 11). The author concludes that enforcing real names policies in
online spaces is an abuse of power (Boyd, par. 12). The solution she presents is simply not
enforcing real name

Environmental Effects of War
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN CONDUCT OF WAR
INTRODUCTION
War is never an isolated act.
War is a phenomenon of organized violent conflict, typified by extreme aggression, societal
disruption and adaptation, and high mortality. Usually a war is a pre planned activity to begin with
by one group or one nation and the group initiates the war by means of violence against the other.
The primary feature of this behaviour pattern is a certain state of organized conflict that is
engaged in between two or more separate social entities. Such a conflict is always an attempt at
altering either the psychological hierarchy or the material hierarchy of domination or equality
between two or more groups. In all cases, at least one participant (group) in the ... Show more

For example after the war finishes , usually the losing nations pays compensations or money for
reparations to the victorious nations for the destruction caused. In many cases , land is ceded to
victorious nations. The victorious nations control the losing nation s economy according to its
own principles and theories and eventually end up in exploiting its natural and economic
resources. Typically speaking, war becomes very intertwined with the economy and many wars
are partially or entirely based on economic reasons such as the American Civil War. In some
cases war has stimulated a country s economy for example World War II is often credited with
bringing America out of the Great Depression but in many cases, such as the wars of Louis XIV,
the Franco Prussian War, and World War I
, warfare serves only to damage the economy of the
countries involved. For example, Russia s involvement in World War I took such a toll on the
Russian economy that it almost collapsed and greatly contributed to the start of the Russian
Revolution of 1917. War not only adversely affects the life of the people but also other essential
things required for their survival. War can affect the environment that it takes place in. War destroys
crops, forest, water systems, and other natural resources. Wars can also cause pollution in the air,
land, and the water.
It is very difficult to point out that these are the particular impacts of war as the impacts of war
varies from war to

Lord Of The Flies Teamwork Vs Independence Essay
I believe that being in a group is much more beneficial than being independent. Throughout the
book lord of the flies there are two tribes who represent teamwork versus independence. There is
Ralph s tribe who are democratic and work as a group for survival. Then on the other side there is
Jacks tribe where everyone is free to do whatever they want. The definition of teamwork is The
process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal. This ties in
perfectly with the novel because Ralph s tribe is working together and sharing ideas to achieve
their goal of getting rescued. There are three reasons why I believe working in a group is better
than being independent. The first reason is that two heads are always better than one. The second
is that teamwork allows people to accomplish projects and goals which are difficult to do alone.
My final reason is that teamwork builds morale.
The first reason to why being in a group is better than being independent is that two heads always
work better than one. There is only so much that one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You ll feel that your work is appreciated and valued when you contribute to something that ends
in a way that is beneficial to everyone. If you offer an idea that helps improve the productivity of
the group then confidence and trust is quickly gained. Each team member has something special
to offer. By working together, members of a team feel a strong sense of belonging and deep
commitment to each other and their goal. This is seen in the book Lord of the flies where each
character brings something good to the group: Ralphs leadership, Jacks hunting skills, Simons
logical thinking and Piggys innovativness. Piggy is made fun of throughout the whole beginning of
the book but once he starts bringing upon these innovative ideas forward he starts to gain abit of

French American Dream Essay
Traveling has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Imagine strolling down a sidewalk being
surrounded by the twinkling lights of world famous monuments and chapels. Hearing an elegant,
but virgin language from inside the cafe serving cultural cuisine. As an American it is natural to feel
so out of place, but so comfortable with the surroundings in the stylish environment. Being 5000
miles from home has never felt so native.
France to me has always been a country I would love to visit. French is the language of love and
the way the pronunciation of the simplest words rolls off the tongue is so fascinating. To able to
study the language at such an up front and personal point of view would be an honor and humble
experience. The delectable French food, however would be the best part in my opinion. One of my
main points of traveling around is to be able to indulge in the different meals one wouldn t
normally find or prepare in my kitchen. It is well known for the French chefs to care a lot about
their food and prepare every meal with delicacy and perfectionism. The country is known for its
rich history in culinary arts and offer a wide spectrum of types of food there. Like me, this is every
food lover s dream.

Besides the shopping, food, and historic buildings, I would like to be able to discover the little
differences between my country and that one I could only learn from being there. From doing
some research I learned that dogs are more welcome in public places than they are in the United
States. As an animal lover, this sounds like paradise to me. The cars and streets are also smaller in
size and jaywalking isn t much of a big deal. Another small difference is taken in the homes, the
bathrooms are separated into two rooms, one being the toilet, the other being just the

MediSys Corp. :The Intense care Product Development Team

It was just six months away from MediSys s planned August 2009 launch of IntensCare, their new
remote monitoring system for use in hospitals intensive care units. The company was investing
$20.5 million in the new system, which represented the most ambitious project in the company s 10
year history.
Valerie Merz, marketingmanager for IntensCare, was feeling enormous pressure as she reviewed

In August 2008, Beaumont introduced a new parallel system for product development in which a
core team of people assembled from all the critical functions R D, Marketing
Sales, Product Engineering, Software Design, Regulatory, and Production worked together
continuously to move a product from conceptual stage to final production. For every core team, a
project leader was designated to orchestrate its work, keep an eye on the complete project, secure

Domestication In The Americas Essay
Moving away from Eastern Asia, it is now time to focus on the development of agriculture of the
Americas. In a similar way as to what happen in China, agriculture originated independently in
three different areas: Mesoamerica, the Andean region in South America and eastern, mid
continental North America. The earliest evidence for domesticates so far comes from
archaeobotanical remains found in caves, in all three origin centres. These remains are usually
recovered in a state of remarkably good preservation, as a result of the dry climate that prevents
the decay of organic materials. The caves in which these remains are discovered, usually also
display evidence for the presence of small groups of hunter gatherers. These particular aspects led
researchers to suggest that the domestication process in the Americaswas initiated by nomadic or
seminomadic groups of people, possibly in a higher setting, although this theory is now being
questioned by new lines of evidence (Smith, 1994: 174).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
mays). This is believed to have originated in southwest Mexico, from where it subsequently spread
to the areas of mid continental North America and the Andes. However, maize was not the first
plant to undergo the process in domestication in the Americas, and, even after having spread out
throughout the continent, people still consumed a variety of other plant species, with a few
differences depending on the specific region. For example, people in southwestern United Stated
maintained species such as beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), squash (Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo), and
sunflower (Helianthus annuus var. macrocarpus) as important components of their diets, even after
the establishment of maize as a staple

The Importance Of An Important Role Within Society
Archivists play an important role within society. Historically, archives were centered on the
preservation of materials (Vassilakaki Moniarou Papaconstantinou, (2017). As the centuries passed,
the role of the archivist expanded the schooling necessary to work as an archivist became more
complex, and the field of archival sciencedeveloped into what it is today. In the scope of library
professions, the number of archivists is still quite small. As of April 2015, there were
approximately 166,200 librarians working in the United States, as of that May, only 5,460 of these
were archivists (Eastwood, 2017). This indicates that the profession is still developing. According to
Jenkinson (1922), the author of the Manual of Archive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why there is no clear education path. Usually, a bachelor s degree in the liberal arts is
pursued; however, there is no specific major for the career. It is further recommended to take any
pre LIS or archival courses offered during ones undergraduate education (Vault, 2017). Having
completed a bachelor s degree, one could begin working in the field, however, they would be
severely lacking in the required knowledge to perform well as an archivist. It is most typical to
further pursue a Master s degree in History, Library Science, Political Science, or Public
Administration. In the last decade, it has become common to see both Computer Science and
Information Systems as Masters Degrees (OOH, 2015; Anderson, 2010, 756). As noted by
Eastwood (2017), a master s program specifically dedicated to Archival Science does not exist in
the United States; however, multiple educators in the field seek to have one established (78).
Though there are many options for ones higher education degree, individuals seeking a career in
archives typically pursue a degree in History or LIS because of the significant overlap between
the degree and the professional competencies (Shepherd, 2010, 187). Furthermore, depending on
the specific type of archives one intends to work in, it may be necessary to pursue a dual masters.
For example, if one intends to work in the archives at a historical society, it is necessary to have a
History and LIS degree (Vault,

Impact Of Visual Merchandising On Consumer Behaviour
High fashion brands all over the world use numerous tactics and methods to influence consumers
buying behavior. One of these methods is the use of visual merchandising and placement in their
retail stores. This paper will analyze how high fashion brands use visual merchandising in their
retail stores to influence consumer behavior and the effects it has on consumers buying habits,
arguing that the right visual merchandisingwill positively stimulate consumers buying behavior. For
the purpose of this paper we will use the following definition of visual merchandising: Visual
merchandise is the presentation of a store and its merchandise in such a manner that will attract the
attention of potential customers. It involves decorating the store keeping the interior presentation
the same as what is promised on the outside. (Economic Times) And consumer behavior as ... the
study of individuals, groups or organisations and the processes they use to select, secure, use and
dispose of products, services, experiences, or ideas to satisfy needs and the impact that these
processes have on the consumer and society... (Cant, et al. 2013) Today s fashion and retail market
is highly competitive making it essential for brands to create the right atmosphere and convey the
right message through their visual merchandising. Visual merchandising, when done correctly, is
the most direct way of stimulating consumers and influencing their buying behavior. Shopping is

The Human Person Is That It Needs Relationship For Its...
The nature of the human person is that it needs relationship for its existence. According to the IPS
model stated here, humans are naturally social with inclinations and needs for family, friendship,
life in society, and other interpersonal relationships (IPS group 2014, p. 9). Based on this IPS
assumption, supports such as relationship, loving, caring, and interaction are essential elements
that are vital for a human s survival. Throughout the history of philosophy and psychology,
individual observers made assumptions that were related to the IPS model. For instance, as cited
in Broadie and Rowe s (2002), Aristotle had argued that a relation between two people counts as
friendship only if (a) it is reciprocal; (b) each wishes the other... Show more content on

Bowlby was a psychoanalyst, so the paper also considers other significant individuals who have
contributed to the psychoanalytic school in the history of psychology. Such individuals include
Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Klein, Ainsworth, Main, and Winnicott.
In his book: Attachment and Loss, Bowlby (1969) stated: For long, psychoanalysts have been at
one in recognizing a child s first human relationship as the foundation stone of his personality; but
there is as yet no agreement on the nature and origin of that relationship (Bowlby, 1969 p. 177).
Before continuing with Bowlby s attachment theory, the paper examines first some ideas of the
founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud (1856 1939). Freud s theory of personality focuses on
drives and unconsciousness. Thorne and Henley (2001) stated, Freud grew more and more
convinced that much of the operation of the dynamic forces within an individual personality
occurs unconsciously, and he came to see himself as an explorer of the unconsciousness (p. 441).
According to Thorne and Henley (2001), Freud conceptualized personality in terms of the
unconscious (p. 441) which he claims has three levels: unconscious which contains unaware
information that may be repressed; pre conscious (before conscious) which is comprised of
available information; and conscious material of which one is aware (p. 441). Thorne and Henley

have been cases reported of an individual s privacy being breached by another person who has
access to this information within an IS. To iterate this, quoting from the Stanford Encyclopedia of

However, there are ethical and legal areas that are lacking and enforcing of regulations and laws is
still proving to be a challenge. The one specific area I feel this way about is that of safety. Many
Information Systems that exist have more than once been a victim to an attempted or successful
hacking attempt and this usually leads to theft of data, identity and money in the case of financial
Information Systems. Information System security is an area that needs to be improved. This can be
iterated by the following quote from useoftechnology.com: With tools like the internet, hackers have
found it very easy to hack into any computer or system as long as it is connected on internet.
Hackers can easily use an IP (Internet Protocol) address to access a user s computer and collect
data for selfish reasons. (useoftechnology.com)

customer account was hacked which equated to over 3 billion accounts including email, Tumblr,

Humanism In Our Town By Thornton Wilder
Our Town is Thornton Wilder s 1938 play. The play is based on urban life in the early twentieth
century. It is set in the small fictional town known as Grover s Corners, in New Hampshire. One of
the main themes that are effectively explored in Thornton Wilder s play is humanism. This paper
defines humanism and describes some humanism actions from the play.
The term humanism refers to any mode or system of thought in which human dignity, welfare,
values and interests predominate (Katie, 2013). It is a philosophy, belief or method whose main
emphasis is on the realm of human beings and their daily lives. Humanism has both religious and
secular connotations. Religious humanism uses religious dogma and supernatural phenomena as
the basis of decision making. Secular humanism uses ethics, reason and human fulfillment in
making moral judgment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start with, the play demonstrates the fact that humanism is all about being concerned with the
well being of others. In his answer to the man who asks about what has been done to curb
industrial inequality and social injustice in the city, Web answers, Meantime, we do all we can to
take care of those who can t help themselves (Thornton Wilder, 1938,p.279). This shows that they
are doing their best to promote the wellbeing of all people in the town.
The play shows that humanism involves celebrating life. After she dies, Emily tries to return to
earth in order to relive even for a single day. When she realizes that this is impossible, she
concludes that live should be valued (Thornton Wilder, 1938). This instance shows that life
should be considered as a chance given for one to fulfill his or her own potential. Thornton Wilder
uses his play to show that seeking fame is part of humanity. For instance, George uses baseball and
his pride to seek fame (Thornton Wilder, 1938). This shows that an individual s interests should
come first before those of

Effective Management Of Operations And Supply Chain
Introduction Effective management of operations and supply chain is a crucial source of
competitive advantage for any business in a rigorously competitive environment. Operations
management generally denotes the process of managing a firm s resources with the ultimate aim of
delivering value to the customer (Krajewski, Ritzman Malhotra, 2013). To stay ahead of the
competition, an organisation must constantly strive to transform its operations it must seek to
eliminate inefficiencies in the supply chain. This report compares the operations of 99p Stores and
Sainsbury s fulfilment process. Sainsbury, which was founded more than one and a half centuries
ago, is one of the most popular retailers in the UK, commanding the third largest market share after
Tescoand Asda (Christie, 2013). 99p Stores is also a retailer that operates in the UK, though it is
quite smaller compared to Sainsbury. While Sainsbury has been doing online retailingsince 1996,
99p Stores is currently in the process of testing the viability of online retailing.
Operations Transformation The primary aim of any transformation process is to deliver value to the
customer. From primary activities such as raw material acquisition and marketing to support
activities such as procurement and human resource management, an organisation aims to create
value for the end consumer. Transforming these operations is vital for survival in an environment
characterised by stiff competition. Some of the operations

Research Assistant History
The research done by Molony and Hammett looked into how research assistants are compensated
for their help in the field. These two also research if the wealth asymmetry has any affect on the
relationship between researcher and research assistance. The history behind research and research
assistant relationships has a great deal to do with the history and the colonial era transition of
researchers.
In places like South Africa, the white researcher has less of an advantage in conducting research
because populations are based on color and if you are white then you do not get as many
opportunities to view the cultures of other people. Unlike in Tanzania, the transition from their
colonial era was smooth and comfortable. Tanzanians enjoy working with and helping the white
foreigners conduct research because it helps them learn English and understand the white culture. In

also known as a gatekeeper . A gatekeeper is needed in the research process to be able to visit

race, age, and gender (pg. 296). Gender plays a major role in anthropological research assistants
because taboos of opposite sex can cause complications of the research. Even if it is easier for a
male to work with a female because female assistants are able to enter new territory and

Antwone Fisher Symbolism
Throughout the two movies, Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington used both language and
stylistic features to present the idea of a personal journey, in particular, through the use of
symbolism. In the film, Antwone fisher, Washington uses a symbol of women. The beginning of
the film shows how Antwone was mistreated and abused as a child through flashbacks. In this
case the symbol of women is used to symbolise worthlessness and insignificance as he is abused
and beaten by his foster mother and raped by his foster sister. As the film progresses Antwon
meets and becomes romantically involved with a woman, Cheryl, who is also in the navy. With
Cheryl by his side Antwone is able to stand up to his foster mother and no longer let her push him...

Later as his maths skills become more and more evident to the professor, will is offered job
opportunities that could set him up for life and insure him of a brighter future. This again
symbolises a personal journey for will as maths opens a brighter more secure future.
By using symbolism as a stylistic feature Gus Van Santand Denzel Washington are able to
successfully present the idea of a personal journey to their intended audiences.
Social language
Both Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington successfully use language to present the idea of the
journey in their films however each one uses a different form of language. In Antwone Fisher,
Antwone uses body language or violence to shut people out and create a shield between his
emotions and the outside world, protecting people from getting to him and hurting him. When
Antwone starts seeing a councillor he learns to talk about his feelings and learns to deal with his
anger without violence. In the end of the film Antwone is a different man. He is calm and much
more happier and open as he has learnt to open up about his feelings and deal with emotions in a
constructive way. He learns to talk to people rather than just turning to violence to solve his issues.
This shows a social journey as Antwone learns to talk to people about how he feels rather than
putting up a wall and using violence to shut people out.
Throughout the film of Good Will Hunting, Will is in a very similar

The Conflict Between White People And Black People
The bloodiest Civil War war in the United States history was not cure of everything. After the war,
social problems existed for long years. White people and black people kept fighting. Racism was a
very big problem. White people killed lots of black people for no reason. Even after KKK, white
people kept causing problems and killing black people. One of the examples is the Elaine Race
Riot. This bloody riot started in September 30, 1919 in Phillips County s Elaine Town in Arkansas.
In this essay, I am going to write about this riot and its details.
The Elaine Riot was one of the biggest conflict between white people and black people in the
United States history. A shooting incident started the riot. It happened at a meeting of the
Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America and it led white people to start a riot
against black people in Elaine town in Phillips County, Arkansas and surrounding areas. Around
200 of black people and 5 white people were killed. However, exact number is not known.
The incident happened in September 30, 1919. Around 100 black sharecropper, who were working
on the white landowner s plantations, attended a meeting of the Progressive Farmers of Household

Hepatitis A Case Studies
Hepatitis A is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Hepatitis A affects the
liver and may cause inflammation of the liver and affect the liver s functioning. This disease can
be spread by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. This disease can also be spread by
close contact with infected individuals. If one does not wash their hands properly before preparing
food or drink, they run the risk of contaminating the food with the hepatitisA virus (National
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2017).
One risk factor for hepatitis A is never having been vaccinated for hepatitis A. Some of the risk
factors include: poor hygiene and sanitation and lack of access to safe water. This is due to the...

way to prevent hepatitis A. There are two vaccines that help protect individuals against hepatitis
A: the hepatitis A vaccine and the hepatitis A and B combination vaccine. The hepatitis A
vaccine protects all age groups against hepatitis A, while the combination vaccine only protects
adults. The hepatitis vaccine is given in two doses. It is recommended that children get
vaccinated at 12 to 23 months and again at 2 to 4 years. Adults who were not vaccinated as
children can get vaccinated at any time so long as they get each dose 6 to 18 months apart. Some
people should not get the hepatitis vaccine, such as those who are allergic to the vaccine
ingredients and immune compromised individuals. If you are sick, you should wait until you feel
better to get the vaccine. The vaccine can also be given as post exposure prophylaxis (after one
contracts hepatitis A), to help fight the disease. Additionally, other preventive measures for hepatitis

Audra Knelt On A Pillow Before The Altar In The Castleв
Ђ™S
Audra knelt on a pillow before the altar in the castle s chapel. A month ago, the tiny room served
as an overflow guest chamber, but Audra had it converted into a place where people might pray
and reflect. It was on the first floor, tucked away in a corner, and offered a view of the garden (if
one strained her neck).
As Audra grew older, the gods and goddesses seemed closer, more accessible and less mysterious.
She in no way considered herself a pious woman, but when she prayed, she felt heard. While the
gods and goddesses certainly did not solve all her problems, they listened, and that was often all
the support she needed. This was all a part of aging, she assumed, casting off the doubts of youth

And, of course, Vaughan, Faye, and their family were always at Audra s side. Vaughan and Faye

Of course, one could never forget Geraint, even though she d seen him recently. They promised to
visit one another every other year, with him visiting one year and she the next. They d never be
parted for long again.
Audra closed her eyes and smiled, thinking of Dillan and how proud Trana and Eudaf would be
of their son. He was the definition of a free thinker, but she had never known a young man so
devoted to his kingdom and duties as a knight and advisor. Dillan was like another son to her, but
she realized she needed to do a better job of showing him that. As always, she let her memories
drift to the deceased and whispered words of love to them Lowri, Petra, Eudaf, Trana, and Owena
(yes, Owena). She saved her mother and Carlton for last.
Mam, I love you. I can never thank you enough for teaching me the importance of second chances.
Thank you for loving me. I did not have you back in my life for long enough, whispered Audra, but
our time together changed me. Thank you.

captured her heart and soul, she still treasured those the years she spent with Carlton. She and her

Heroes Essay
Heroes Essay The question remains: who is worthy to be called a hero? I have seen many
people who deserve the title of a hero for many bold actions. Sure, they do not wear legendary
costumes, drive bat mobiles or possess superhuman abilities. Of course, there is much more to a
hero than just what is visible to the eye. As a matter of fact, it is all about what is on the inside
the qualities and behavior fixed in a mentality. That is why self obsessed people do not make it
on the list of heroes since their mind tends to think only about one s self. In today s era, the
people who are marked as heroes are acknowledged because they achieved something for the good
of others. Looking back to an earlier time in my life, I cannot remember a time... Show more content

In my eyes, foster parents are heroes. If taking children under their custody and providing them with
care, shelter, love, security, and a sense of well being is not heroism; then, I don t know what is.
They devote their time raising these children, even though they are not theirs biologically. Making
matters worse, several children come from broken homes, complicating the parents duty even more.
Yet the heroes prove themselves to be triumphant. Additionally, doctors and medical personnel are
very important hero figures of today. With new medical provisions, doctors and technology team
up to save lives and provide excellent care for disabled patients. Doctors sacrifice their time to help
others in many ways. Without them, our nation s death rates would be extremely high. Their
loyalty, determination and courage are priceless motivations which keep them going. In the same
way, we must not forget soldiers who risk their lives while sacrificing their own. In addition to
that, they stay loyal to their country, never giving up even when danger is an all time high. One
thing is for sure, it does not take someone legendary to change the world. One of the people to

Essay On John Locke s Rejection Of Innate Ideas
How Successful is John Locke s Rejection of Innate Ideas?
The theory of innate knowledge states that some knowledge is part of the mind from birth and
therefore we are not born with a blank slate . This means that innate knowledge can only ever be a
priori and not a posteriori. A priori is knowledge that only be gained through reason and a posteriori
is knowledge which can only be gained through sense experience. Innatism assumes that the
knowledge we acquire is not only gained through experience and the senses.
John Locke is an empirical philosopher who argues against the theory of innate knowledge. He
attempts to answer questions such as how we think and perceive. He believes that directly justified
beliefs can only come from experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we break down the statement it would look like this:
Premise 1 I think
Premise 2 Thinking things exist
Conclusion Therefore, I exist
David Hume, an empiricist argues against this questionable hidden premise. He states that just
because something possesses the ability to think, does not imply that it actually exists. He argues
that we have no right to assume this. This makes Descartes example of innate ideas false and
therefore means Descartes cannot prove the existence of knowledge. In Descartes third meditation,
there is a thought experiment called the wax example. He uses this to show what he believes to be
innate. According to Descartes, our minds are already stocked with many intellectual concepts
innate ideas. These concepts consist of mathematics, logic and metaphysics. Descartes states that
even our sensory ideas hold some form of innateness. He believes that bodies have no properties
with resemble our sensory ideas such as colour, texture, sounds etc. This implies that the content of
these ideas must come from the mind itself. One problem with this formulation is if these sensory
ideas are innate then how do we characterise innateness? These sensory ideas depend upon sensory

The Annunciation (Cleveland Museum Of Art, Cleveland
Formal Analysis of The Annuciation
The painting The Annunciation (Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland) was made in Netherlands,
or possibly France, in the 1380s, using tempera and oil with gold on wood panel. A vertical
composition of about 31.43 Г— 40.32 cm, the sacred iconography depicts the biblical scene of the
Archangel Gabriel, sent by God, announcing to the Virgin that she would soon give birth to Christ.
The artist, who was commissioned to draw this piece, is unknown. The patron probably
commissioned the artwork for devotional use. It might be part of a narrative polyptych, conveying
the biblical story of Christ, expressing the divinity of God and Christianity.
In the foreground, the two main figures of the scene, the Virgin and the Archangel, are markedly
painted larger than the figures in the background, and thus, they become the attractive focus of the
whole painting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The excellent employment of chiaroscuro vividly shows the texture of the front of the drapery,
depicting it realistically and three dimensionally. She has a golden halo with God s messages on

face. However, she holds her hands in front of her breast, eyes gazing at God s message brought

The Virgin s serene facial expression contradicts her behavior, perhaps because the message not
only tells her the incarnation of Christ but also foreshadows his doomed death. Therefore, the

The Duality of Man in Literary Works and Critical Essays
Unseen Ties: Codependency and Fallout in the Dual Brain interpreted from Literary Works and
Critical Essays The lifelong struggle for control and recognition of the human mind has been a
popular and evolving science since the late nineteenth century. Many notable authors, scientists, and
laymen have been fascinated with the study since then. Robert Louis Stevensonis one of the more
notable authors to write about dual personalities with his short story, Markheim, and the novella,
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The latter of these two stories has inspired the study
of multiple personalities more than any other work of fiction, and perhaps any work of nonfiction.

In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the title provides irony in respect to murder
being an aggressive act, and hiding being something less. Stevenson s use of Utterson, who is a
dry, skeptical, and narrow minded character to narrate the story suffers irony itself, considering
the story is quite fantastic and irrational. Also, with Dr. Lanyon being the closest person
historically to Henry Jekyll, Lanyon is in the dark the longest, being the last to meet Ed Hyde.
Ironically, being the last to meet Mr. Hyde, he becomes the first to learn Jekyll s dark secret, as
Hyde comes out of the closet. The title that the author gives to the doctor, Henry Jekyll, M.D,
D.C.L, LL.D, F.R.S, gives the reader the impression that this is a very well educated, stable,
busy, and important person (Stevenson 470). Clearly, a man with those responsibilities would
have a full life, and no need to create an evil twin. This proves to be untrue, and the basis for the
story. This exemplifies the old adage; you can never have too much, especially if what you have
isn t making you happy. Henry Jekyll s desire to live unchecked is responsible for the creation of
Hyde. This in turn leads to the decision to commit suicide as the only way to prevent Hyde from
continuing his destructive ways. This demonstrates the ironic nature of the ego and the id.
Depending on the perspective, control of the Jekyll/Hyde beast becomes subjective.

Similarities Of Grendel And Beowulf
This essay is a character analysis that compares and contrast the two main characters of the epic
Beowulf . The essay informs the reader of the traits the two characters have in common including
their cocky personalities and their impossible strength. It also mentions the many opposing
characteristics of the two characters including how brave or cowardly they are, and weather or not
they want to help or hurt people. Many direct quotes from the epic Beowulfare also within the essay
to help support each allegation, giving proof to the characteristics identified.
Compare and Contrasting Beowulf and Grendel
There is a hero and a villain in every story, we have: Batman and The Joker, Spider Man and The
Green Goblin, Thor and Loki, and of course Beowulf and Grendel. In the epic Beowulf our two
main characters are Beowulf the hero of the story, and Grendel the evil demon who terrorized the
world. In the epic, Beowulf and Grendel are noticeably different, but at the same time alike in
many ways. The people in the story may not have notice the similarities, but they could not be
hidden from the peering eye of the reader. In the story Beowulf was was brave, while Grendel was
cowardly, Beowulf was helpful, while Grendel only wanted to hurt people; in comparison, they
were both unnaturally strong and very arrogant.
To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was
brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar s men. He did this
while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men
we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the
characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. Mean while, Beowulf liked to meet a
problem head on, in this case the problem was Grendel himself. Determined Beowulf sailed to
Denmark to defeat Grendel, telling Hrothgar that he will take Grendel s life with his bare hands.
As told in the story, That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till it s life/ leaped
out (Raffel, 1963, l. 366 368). And when Beowulf got the chance to do just that, Grendel took the
cowards road, Grendel s one thought

He looks at the army and warfare in terms of men, technology, valour and victory (Hanson 68). He
also discusses the west?s militarism tradition. A tradition supports mobilization of citizen soldiers
and animating them with principles of collective endeavor. According to Victor Hanson, it is the
west?s tradition that has helped them develop and maintain a strong military power. Hanson
struggles to recreate nine ?landmark? episodes of combat through which the west gradually started
their rise to the top. In this approach, three classical period episodes are depicted to show the
situational onset of the rise of the west as Salamis, Cannae and Gaugamela. Hanson depicts these
battles to have manifested particular western lethal military machinery. Moreover, the chronology
is given a vivid progression when the author depicts that gradual spread of the western style war
machinery through three additional battles as Tenochtitlan, Poitiers and Lepanto. The author
eventually examined the gradual mechanism of battle spread from Europe into the west. The distinct
military style of invincibility is further traced through Midway, Rorke?s Drift and Tet.
John Lynn, on the other hand, tries to conceptualize the relationship between practical dimensions
of war and cultural factors. Although he tries to undermine Victor Hanson?s idea of war, he
discusses the realities of combat and discourse of war based on social and political

Ed Roberts, a student at the University of California, founded the Independent Living Center of

organization worked by the people for the people and what the program advocated. They even
protested against President Nixon when he vetoed earlier versions of the Rehabilitation Act. With

people with disabilities faced and how they could help. This included struggles seeking

Genetic Macromolecules
Biological evolution begins with the origin of life, but the subject is the perhaps the most
interdisciplinary of any in science. Understanding how life began on Earth requires knowledge of
the astronomical, geological, and atmospheric settings. However, those settings are in turn
dependent on knowing the time period when life arose, which comes from the fossil and molecular
records, including molecular clocks based on genetic mutations. Interrelated with the setting is the
chemistry that generates the organic molecules used to assemble the first cells and carry the genetic
information to successive generations of cells. But holding the chemical reactions and products
together in a cellrequires a membrane, and the assembly of that involves... Show more content on

The last 60 years have witnessed chemists developing an understanding of organocatalysis and
ligand field theory, both of which give demonstrable low molecular weight catalysts. We assume
that transition metal ligand complexes are likely to have occurred in the deep ocean trenches by the
combination of naturally occurring oceanic metals and ligands synthesized from the emergent
CO(2), H(2), NH(3), H(2)S, and H(3)PO(4). We are now in a position to investigate experimentally
the metal ligand complexes, their catalytic function, and the reaction networks that could have
played a role in the development of metabolism and life itself.a self propelled oil droplet system
based on fatty acid chemistry. This system exhibits symmetry breaking with four characteristics:
directional internal convective flow, directional external water flow, directional product release, and
a self generated pH gradient. The simple ingredients oil with acid producing precursor and alkaline
water with surfactant work in concert to produce sustained autonomous motion. The
supramolecular structure itself contains the chemistry that fuels its movement. The system
produces not only more surfactant but protons resulting in acidification of the environment
immediately surrounding the oil droplet. The droplet successfully moves away from this waste
product into fresh unmodified alkaline solution and even displays a primitive form of chemotaxis.
Although this mechanism of movement is unlike mechanisms of motility employed by natural
cellular life, directed motion by convection may be useful in an artificial cell context in the
avoidance or delay of chemical

Psychological Factor That Affect Sports Performance
Arousal is a psychological factor that can affect sports performance and is defined as the level
of activation or readiness that an individual will experience when faced with a task (Malpeli
2010, pg. 369). Effective performance requires an athlete to achieve optimal arousal which can
be recognised in certain arousal theories (Malpeli 2010, pg. 369). The level of arousal that is
considered to be optimal varies among every individual (Abernethy 2013, pg. 304). High arousal
can affect performance as it often leads to more tense muscles, higher blood pressures, heart rates
and respiration rates (Abernethy 2013, pg. 302). In comparison to high arousal, low arousal can
lead to a lack of motivation, tiredness, lethargic muscles and a drop in enthusiasm and
concentration and therefore a decrease in performance (Malpeli 2010, pg. 369). Personality is
another psychological factor that can affect sports performance and can be defined as the multiple
characteristics in which an individual possesses to make them unique (Abernethy 2013, pg. 298).
People who are usually introverted like things more quiet and are often good at concentrating
whereas people who are extroverts are generally more excited and lack concentration which can
affect sports performance (Honeybourne 2003). It can be seen that people with certain traits or
characteristics will potentially perform better in particular sports (Abernethy 2013, pg. 299).
Another psychological factor that can affect performance is

Military Strategy and Planning
Part 1 Military theory after World War II drastically changed for two major reasons: the dropping
of Atomic weapons on Japan and what would become known as the Cold War between the USSR
and the West. Foreign policy, which became military policy, starting in 1947 is known as the
Truman Doctrine. This began with U.S. support of Greece and Turkey with economic and military
aid to prevent those countries from falling under Soviet influence. The policy was written as a
response to the events that took place in the Eastern European Theater after World War II. The
Soviet Unioncoopted much of Eastern Europe, ½ of Germany, ½ of Berlin, and believed they
needed an even greater buffer zone to protect Russiafrom the West. Greece and Turkey were
logical extensions of this because both had been devastated during WWII and had strong
socialist parties. Truman believed that if Greece and Turkey did not receive the aid they needed,
they would inevitable fall to Soviet influence. The intended audience was wide: this was a clear
message to the Soviet Union; a message to Europe that the U.S. would not tolerate Soviet
aggression; a message to the people of Greece and Turkey that the U.S. would side with them; and
a message to Congress and the American people that the U.S. would put in a formal policy to
prevent the spread of worldwide communism. Post World War II events were top of mind for most
Americans; there was a fervent anti communism movement afoot in the United States, and a clear

Essay On I CanT Believe You Are Missing Another Day Of School
I can t believe you re missing another day of school, my dad muttered. I ve heard it so many
times before I practically knew what he was going to say before he even opened his mouth. I
know, I said without much meaning. We were sitting in the uncomfortable green chairs that are
in almost every waiting room I ve ever been in. The room smelled like hand sanitizer, also just
like every other doctor s office. I didn t feel like talking about school because if I didn t want to
go, why would I want to have a conversation about it? It s not that I didn t want to attend school, I
just didn t want to go to a place for seven hours without having any friends to talk to. I used to

Having a negative mindset about what is going on in your life then you experience a negative day
and nothing will feel like it is going to get better. You probably are told this all the time but
thinking positive about a situation can actually change your viewpoint on life and the good will
always outweigh the bad. A positive mindwill create a positive life. I thought I was only going to be
told a bunch of things like everything will be okay or don t worry about it, but that wasn t the
case this time. At one minute this woman was just another person in the waiting room and the
next I felt like she was telling me exactly what I needed to hear. The things she said made me feel
like everything really would be okay.
My name was abruptly called and I kindly thanked the woman who gave me the advice that
would change my outlook on just about everything. After talking with the doctor my father and I
walked back into the waiting room, where I noticed the kind woman was gone, and exited the
building. Hours at home flew by and before I realized it, I needed to be getting ready for bed if I
wanted to be rested for school the next day. As I was laying in bed thinking about how horrible it
would be to attend school in the morning, the woman in the waiting room came to my mind. I
thought about all the things she told me and how a positive mind could make life more positive.
For the first time in what seemed like forever, I decided that going to school did not seem

The incidence of earning money from childhood generates a feeling of independence among
children due to which they like to behave freely and promiscuously and do not like to be
subjected to control and discipline by other family members and are seen in many cases, even
before marriage indulging in sexual acts. Thus the family not only suffers the economic loss in the
long run but also becomes subjected to lose social bonds and ties within the family, and at times,
even family disorganisation occurs. This survey study empirically investigates into dimensions of
wage and working hours of child workers in Agra, U.P., India.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Khandekar and Naik (1972) observed that since the early years are meant to equip oneself with
knowledge, techniques and skills for one s different adult roles in the society, having to take up
a job at a young age to earn a living, is bound to affect the very process of growing up.
Chakraborty (1991) found that wage rate of child labourers was nearly 69.43 percent and 64.48
percent of adult male wage rate in 1984 85 and 1986 87 respectively. But the man days of
employment for adult males in agriculture and all other occupations were 242 and 257 and for
children there were 307 and 315 respectively in 1984 and 1987. He has advanced the argument that
child agricultural labourers although they constitute a very small percentage of total agricultural

Why Is Cerberus Important In Greek Mythology
There are many unique creatures mentioned in Greek mythology. One of the most well known may
be the three headed dog known as Cerberus ( Cerberus: The Three Headed Dog of Greek
Mythology ). When people think of Greek mythology, the most common thing that comes to their
head is Zeus, Hera, Athena, etc. However, there is another figure in Greek mythologythat many
people should also recognize when this topic is mentioned to them and his name is Cerberus.
Cerberus is the best monster in Greek mythologyas he is known in myths such as Hercules and his
12 Labors as well as his relevance in modern culture. Cerberus is a three headed dog from Greek
mythology. He lives in front of the gates of the underworld which is owned by Hades, the god of
the underworld. His parents are Typhon and Echidna, two monstrous creatures from Greek
mythology. Cerberus is described to have three heads and a snake for a tail. Cerberus also has
many abilities such as super strength, great hearing and smell, and immortality. These skills are

In the ancient world, dogs were depicted as wild animals that defied domestication, roamed the
streets in packs and scavenged on the edge of town ( Cerberus: Legendary Hell Hound of the
Underworld ). Because of this, Cerberus was represented as a dog to represent the feared
qualities humans back then saw in the ancient canine ( Cerberus: Legendary Hell Hound of the
Underworld ). In the modern era, one can even say that the archetypal hellhound used in modern
horror and adventure movies are actually based on Kerberos ( Cerberus ). Today, Cerberus is now
used in many video games and movies to add excitement and more action to these forms of
entertainment such as the Harry Potter series as well as the resident evil video games. In these
examples, certain dogs and monsters often depict similar characteristics to Cerberus

With detailed reference to Text H and to relevant ideas from language study, explore how written
language is used to assert power Text H is a poster which displays the rules and information to
students taking or entering an exam. It also is for the use of the invigilators, to inform them of the
rules as well as the candidates. This poster will be shown right across the country to students
preparing to take an exam. This is done to make sure there is regularity and equality everywhere, so
that nowhere has different rules. The text asserts power using different language techniques, for
example the use of instrumental power to enforce the exam boards authority on the candidates. The
text uses words such as must and must not ; this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These sentences are imperatives. This particular imperative uses the pronoun you . The use of
you is Fairclough s synthetic personalisation; this asserts power by making it seem the poster is
talking directly to you by creating a relationship with the exam board. It also gives the audience
a duty to comply with the rules given. There are also lexical fields of teenagers, they use items
that are associated to teenagers that will be taking their exams, for example iPods and mp3
players this also adds synthetic personalisation to the text. The graphology used in Text H, also
asserts power throughout towards the candidates. Discourse features of numbers and bullet points
apply power; it shows the importance of the certain points for example, 1. You must be on time
for all your examinations . It clearly explains to the candidates that they should follow these clear
rules, as the exam board stresses their power. The colour of some parts of the text in Text H uses a
red font. This inflicts power because there are connotations of the colour red as danger and as a
warning. This matches the genre of the text, because it s warning the candidates to do something.
As only some sentences are in a red font, it emphasises that these particular sentences are more
important than the rest of the text.

Theme Of Foreshadowing In The Sixth Sense
The director M. Night Shyamalan used different methods to construct and format the theme of the
film, The Sixth Sense . He uses foreshadowing, symbolism and motif to help the viewer
understand the movie and see that it is more than what you first perceive. In The Sixth Sense a
boy named Cole Sear has a sixth sense that is haunting him at the beginning of the movie. He sees
things that other people can t see. He can also hear things that other people can t. He can see
ghosts, among people as if living like nothing ever happened. A Doctor named Dr. Malcolm Crowe
tries to help Cole with his problem until he realizes that Cole is very much like one of his other
patients, Vincent Grey, who was a boy that had the exact same symptoms. Ultimately the director
uses foreshadowing, symbolism and motif to construct the theme of communication within the
film. Throughout the movie, The Sixth Sensedirector M. Night Shyamala utilizes foreshadowing
to hint to the viewers what will happen next throughout the film. Foreshadowing was used as a
valuable tool more than just once throughout the motion picture. For example, in the beginning
Vincent Grey breaks into Dr. Malcolm Crowe s home. Vincent Grey was a former patient of
Crowe s. Throughout this emotional scene Vincent tells him that he had failed him and then
Vincent shoots Crowe and himself. Dr. Crowe gets shot in the kidney. That would be a fatal
wound to anyone. Although the audience doesn t know that, because that was only a flashback.
The movie then moves to the next fall and it appears that Crowe is alive. This example indicates
that Dr. Crowe is a ghost himself. Another instance of foreshadowing is Cole Sear is the only
person to speak to Dr.Crowe throughout the film. Even though Dr. Crowe speaks and tries to
communicate with other people, no one speaks back. Dr. Crowe only sees what he wants to see.
This is also an indication Dr. Crowe is dead. As the film went on one may notice that Dr. Crowe
only wore an undershirt, a shirt over it and a coat. And he switches all the time, but he never wears
anything besides that.Living people usually change their clothes. Another foreshadow is in the
beginning, when Cole speaks to Dr. Crowe in the church he spoke in

Ralph Waldo Emerson And Individualism
Do people in need have a right to be assisted by people who have the means necessary to help; is it
better for the recievers to be aided, or to solve their problems by themselves? Many philosophers
throughout human history have analyzed and constructed arguments for and against helping the
needy and poor, as well as arguments for charitable isolation. Peter Singer is an Australian
philosopher who wrote Famine Affluence and Moralityin Philosophy and Public Affairs to
convince people of rich societies that giving charity to those in need is not generous, but is rather
morally obligatory to people that have the resources to help
Ralph Waldo Emersonwas an American philosopher that contributed to the concept of
individualism. As part of a series of essays, Emerson wrote Self Reliance to explain his personal
worldview of individualism, a moral philosophy that judges people based on their individual
personality traits, values, experiences, and values. The main idea of Self Reliance is that people
should not conform to morals and values of other people, but should instead let their values be
shaped by the life that they lead.
Garrett Hardin on the other hand, was an American philosopher and ecologists that wrote Lifeboat
Ethics in Psychology Today to differentiate a world that has a single authority leading it, from a
world that has multiple authorities without a supreme captain to dictate right from wrong. Hardin
further explains how distributing resources based on

Buddha vs Jesus
Christianity and Buddhism are two very prominent religions dating back from early years up until
today. Both are offshoots of other religions Christianity from Judaism, and Buddhism from
Hinduism. The Buddhists follow the teachings of Gautama Buddha, while Christianity is centered
upon the life and teachings of JesusChrist. Christianity is monotheistic while Buddhismis
nontheistic. Christians believe that Christ is the son of God, while Buddhists do not believe in God
as the creator of the universe.
Buddhism dates back to Nepal, India in the 5th century BCE. The early followers of Buddhism
were a community of monks called the sangha. The literal meaning of Buddhism is those who
follow the teachings of Buddha. The teachings of the Buddha are often referred to as the dharma ,
which also means cosmic law and order.
The ethical guidelines of Buddhism are not to murder, lie, steal, drink, or participate in unlawful
sexual behavior. Buddhists believe in the Four Noble Truths: 1) human life is full of suffering; 2)
suffering stems from cravings for pleasure and avoidance of pain; 3) suffering can be eradicated;
4) the path of freedom from suffering is the path of enlightenment. (Julia Hardy) They also follow
the Noble Eightfold Path in order to achieve the end of suffering. The Eightfold Path consists of: 1)
Samma Ditthi Right view or understanding, 2) Samma Sankappa Right thought or attitude, 3)
Samma Vaca Right speech, 4) Samma Kammanta Right Action, 5)

The Polarity Of College Students
DIGITAL AGE
The Polarity of College Students
Back in my days, we were not fortunate enough to... Gotcha! Did you expect that to be a dull story
like our grandparents or parents may have told to show us how much more difficult their lives
were? Not exactly, this writing is about how college students of this generation make use of digital
technology. The wide spread of today s technology via computers or smartphones results in constant
connectivity to the internet. Social media, video gaming, information databases, and online classes,
have affected college students studies, causes a wider academic gap between distracted students
and self disciplined students. College students own a computer or smartphone, a more compact and
mobile version of a computer, or both. Thanks to the mobility of smartphones that makes them
ubiquitous, accessing the internet is effortless. Frequently, I notice students dotting all over the
campus interacting with their smartphones. In his book, Smarter Than You Think, Clive
Thompson states, Our tools are everywhere, linked with our minds, working in tandem (p. 347).
In other words, we are likely to be using our computers whenever we have a chance. In particular,
students from my writing class opt to use their smartphones during our short ten minute break. For
instance, sharing a similar experience, the author of Is Google Making Us Stupid?, Nicholas Carr
says he is likely to use a computer when he is not working (par. 3). In brief, smartphones

  • 2. Manchester By The Sea Analysis Manchester by the Sea is dynamic, emotional, and tragic. The film is a story about a man, Lee Chandler, who becomes responsible for his teenage nephew, Patrick Chandler, after his brother dies of Congestive Heart Failure. Lee is forced to leave his small apartment and handyman position in Quincy, Massachusetts until his affairs in Manchester by the Sea, MA are in order. Roughly halfway through the movie, Lee has a flashback of the fire he accidentally started that took the lives of his three healthy children, and ultimately separated him and his wife. Considering this tragedy, Lee struggles coping with his newly given responsibility of being Patrick s Guardian. One would be hard pressed to watch all two hours of this movie and not feel any emotion. Manchester by the Sea provides its viewers with a flawless delivery of a dramatic story and powerful message with brilliant actors. Lee Chandler s story could to tug at anyone s heart, given his dramatic history. Few individuals possess the strength to cope with a similar catastrophe. The director of the movie, Kenneth Lonergan, administers drama in a creative way that keeps the onlooker roped in for the duration of the film. Todd McCarthy, a renowned movie critic from The Hollywood Reporter, defines Manchester by the Sea in his movie review as A dense, expert drama of broken New England Families (McCarthy). It is impossible to argue with McCarthy s bottom line given its irrefutable accuracy. This is supported by numerous scenes, including Lee s infamous flashback, Lee s encounter with his ex wife Randi on the streets of Manchester by the Sea, and endless scenes entailing Patrick s uncertain fate. McCarthy provides an effective synopsis of the film s drama in saying How the characters cope and relate after this emotionally and psychologically fraught and often powerful, but the focus narrows down to Lee s relationship with the teenage Patrick (McCarthy). More important than the crisis filled scenes in the film is the dominant message conveyed by the director. In addition to the climatic nature of Manchester by the Sea, Lonergan creatively facilitates an influential message for the observer to take away. Lee s emotional struggles of his past clashing with his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Arguments Against Pseudonyms The ever increasing amount of people utilizing the internet as a means of communication has led to many interesting phenomena. One that can be easily observed on many online forums is the use of pseudonyms instead of actual names. The ability to utilize pseudonyms when creating online profiles allows people to protect their identities, enabling them to freely voice their opinions without fear of retaliation. When browsing through online commentsections and social media, it is common to come across people writing under pseudonyms. The reasons for using an alias can be many; while there are people that utilize online anonymityas a way of shielding their personal life from internetbacklash, others choose to abuse anonymity in order to spew... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the article Online Anonymity Protects Marginalized Groups, the author argues that online anonymity is used by marginalized groups to preserve their privacy. The venues the author refers to are the social networks Facebook and Google Plus, which have real name policies that forbid the use of pseudonyms (Boyd, par. 7). The author attempts to answer if said policies protect users or if they increase user vulnerability. She states that the stakeholders in this issue are those most affected by prohibiting pseudonyms and nicknames, the vulnerable and marginalized members of society such as abuse survivors, activists, LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] people, women, and young people (Boyd, par. 3). The values attached to the issue are those of safety, as people often utilize pseudonyms to preserve their physical and mental health, as well as that of their families (Boyd, par. 2). Boyd is against the enforcement of real name policies because it exposes those who need protection, arguing that you don t guarantee safety by stopping people from using pseudonyms, but you do undermine people s safety by doing so (Boyd, par. 11). The author concludes that enforcing real names policies in online spaces is an abuse of power (Boyd, par. 12). The solution she presents is simply not enforcing real name ... • 4. Environmental Effects of War ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN CONDUCT OF WAR INTRODUCTION War is never an isolated act. War is a phenomenon of organized violent conflict, typified by extreme aggression, societal disruption and adaptation, and high mortality. Usually a war is a pre planned activity to begin with by one group or one nation and the group initiates the war by means of violence against the other. The primary feature of this behaviour pattern is a certain state of organized conflict that is engaged in between two or more separate social entities. Such a conflict is always an attempt at altering either the psychological hierarchy or the material hierarchy of domination or equality between two or more groups. In all cases, at least one participant (group) in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example after the war finishes , usually the losing nations pays compensations or money for reparations to the victorious nations for the destruction caused. In many cases , land is ceded to victorious nations. The victorious nations control the losing nation s economy according to its own principles and theories and eventually end up in exploiting its natural and economic resources. Typically speaking, war becomes very intertwined with the economy and many wars are partially or entirely based on economic reasons such as the American Civil War. In some cases war has stimulated a country s economy for example World War II is often credited with bringing America out of the Great Depression but in many cases, such as the wars of Louis XIV, the Franco Prussian War, and World War I , warfare serves only to damage the economy of the countries involved. For example, Russia s involvement in World War I took such a toll on the Russian economy that it almost collapsed and greatly contributed to the start of the Russian Revolution of 1917. War not only adversely affects the life of the people but also other essential things required for their survival. War can affect the environment that it takes place in. War destroys crops, forest, water systems, and other natural resources. Wars can also cause pollution in the air, land, and the water. It is very difficult to point out that these are the particular impacts of war as the impacts of war varies from war to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Lord Of The Flies Teamwork Vs Independence Essay I believe that being in a group is much more beneficial than being independent. Throughout the book lord of the flies there are two tribes who represent teamwork versus independence. There is Ralph s tribe who are democratic and work as a group for survival. Then on the other side there is Jacks tribe where everyone is free to do whatever they want. The definition of teamwork is The process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal. This ties in perfectly with the novel because Ralph s tribe is working together and sharing ideas to achieve their goal of getting rescued. There are three reasons why I believe working in a group is better than being independent. The first reason is that two heads are always better than one. The second is that teamwork allows people to accomplish projects and goals which are difficult to do alone. My final reason is that teamwork builds morale. The first reason to why being in a group is better than being independent is that two heads always work better than one. There is only so much that one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. French American Dream Essay Traveling has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Imagine strolling down a sidewalk being surrounded by the twinkling lights of world famous monuments and chapels. Hearing an elegant, but virgin language from inside the cafe serving cultural cuisine. As an American it is natural to feel so out of place, but so comfortable with the surroundings in the stylish environment. Being 5000 miles from home has never felt so native. France to me has always been a country I would love to visit. French is the language of love and the way the pronunciation of the simplest words rolls off the tongue is so fascinating. To able to study the language at such an up front and personal point of view would be an honor and humble experience. The delectable French food, however would be the best part in my opinion. One of my main points of traveling around is to be able to indulge in the different meals one wouldn t normally find or prepare in my kitchen. It is well known for the French chefs to care a lot about their food and prepare every meal with delicacy and perfectionism. • 9. Domestication In The Americas Essay Moving away from Eastern Asia, it is now time to focus on the development of agriculture of the Americas. In a similar way as to what happen in China, agriculture originated independently in three different areas: Mesoamerica, the Andean region in South America and eastern, mid continental North America. The earliest evidence for domesticates so far comes from archaeobotanical remains found in caves, in all three origin centres. These remains are usually recovered in a state of remarkably good preservation, as a result of the dry climate that prevents the decay of organic materials. The caves in which these remains are discovered, usually also display evidence for the presence of small groups of hunter gatherers. These particular aspects led researchers to suggest that the domestication process in the Americaswas initiated by nomadic or seminomadic groups of people, possibly in a higher setting, although this theory is now being questioned by new lines of evidence (Smith, 1994: 174).... Historically, archives were centered on the preservation of materials (Vassilakaki Moniarou Papaconstantinou, (2017). As the centuries passed, the role of the archivist expanded the schooling necessary to work as an archivist became more complex, and the field of archival sciencedeveloped into what it is today. In the scope of library professions, the number of archivists is still quite small. As of April 2015, there were approximately 166,200 librarians working in the United States, as of that May, only 5,460 of these were archivists (Eastwood, 2017). This is why there is no clear education path. Usually, a bachelor s degree in the liberal arts is pursued; however, there is no specific major for the career. It is further recommended to take any pre LIS or archival courses offered during ones undergraduate education (Vault, 2017). Having completed a bachelor s degree, one could begin working in the field, however, they would be severely lacking in the required knowledge to perform well as an archivist. It is most typical to further pursue a Master s degree in History, Library Science, Political Science, or Public Administration. In the last decade, it has become common to see both Computer Science and Information Systems as Masters Degrees (OOH, 2015; Anderson, 2010, 756). As noted by Eastwood (2017), a master s program specifically dedicated to Archival Science does not exist in the United States; however, multiple educators in the field seek to have one established (78). Though there are many options for ones higher education degree, individuals seeking a career in archives typically pursue a degree in History or LIS because of the significant overlap between the degree and the professional competencies (Shepherd, 2010, 187). Rebleeding was significantly associated with melena, identification of a gastric or duodenal ulcer, endoscopic stigmata of hemorrhage such as blood, clot, and active bleeding, and features of shock at the time of admission (28). According to the IPS model stated here, humans are naturally social with inclinations and needs for family, friendship, life in society, and other interpersonal relationships (IPS group 2014, p. 9). Based on this IPS assumption, supports such as relationship, loving, caring, and interaction are essential elements that are vital for a human s survival. Throughout the history of philosophy and psychology, individual observers made assumptions that were related to the IPS model. Freud s theory of personality focuses on drives and unconsciousness. To iterate this, quoting from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: In most countries of the world, the information revolution has altered many aspects of life significantly: commerce, employment, medicine, security, transportation, entertainment, and on and on. However, there are ethical and legal areas that are lacking and enforcing of regulations and laws is still proving to be a challenge. The one specific area I feel this way about is that of safety. Many Information Systems that exist have more than once been a victim to an attempted or successful hacking attempt and this usually leads to theft of data, identity and money in the case of financial Information Systems. Information System security is an area that needs to be improved. This can be iterated by the following quote from useoftechnology.com: With tools like the internet, hackers have found it very easy to hack into any computer or system as long as it is connected on internet. Hackers can easily use an IP (Internet Protocol) address to access a user s computer and collect data for selfish reasons. The theory of innate knowledge states that some knowledge is part of the mind from birth and therefore we are not born with a blank slate . This means that innate knowledge can only ever be a priori and not a posteriori. A priori is knowledge that only be gained through reason and a posteriori is knowledge which can only be gained through sense experience. Innatism assumes that the knowledge we acquire is not only gained through experience and the senses. John Locke is an empirical philosopher who argues against the theory of innate knowledge. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the title provides irony in respect to murder being an aggressive act, and hiding being something less. Stevenson s use of Utterson, who is a dry, skeptical, and narrow minded character to narrate the story suffers irony itself, considering the story is quite fantastic and irrational. Also, with Dr. Lanyon being the closest person historically to Henry Jekyll, Lanyon is in the dark the longest, being the last to meet Ed Hyde. Ironically, being the last to meet Mr. Hyde, he becomes the first to learn Jekyll s dark secret, as Hyde comes out of the closet. The title that the author gives to the doctor, Henry Jekyll, M.D, D.C.L, LL.D, F.R.S, gives the reader the impression that this is a very well educated, stable, busy, and important person (Stevenson 470). Clearly, a man with those responsibilities would have a full life, and no need to create an evil twin. This proves to be untrue, and the basis for the story. This exemplifies the old adage; you can never have too much, especially if what you have isn t making you happy. Henry Jekyll s desire to live unchecked is responsible for the creation of Hyde. This in turn leads to the decision to commit suicide as the only way to prevent Hyde from continuing his destructive ways. This demonstrates the ironic nature of the ego and the id. • 34. Similarities Of Grendel And Beowulf This essay is a character analysis that compares and contrast the two main characters of the epic Beowulf . The essay informs the reader of the traits the two characters have in common including their cocky personalities and their impossible strength. It also mentions the many opposing characteristics of the two characters including how brave or cowardly they are, and weather or not they want to help or hurt people. Many direct quotes from the epic Beowulfare also within the essay to help support each allegation, giving proof to the characteristics identified. Compare and Contrasting Beowulf and Grendel There is a hero and a villain in every story, we have: Batman and The Joker, Spider Man and The Green Goblin, Thor and Loki, and of course Beowulf and Grendel. In the epic Beowulf our two main characters are Beowulf the hero of the story, and Grendel the evil demon who terrorized the world. In the epic, Beowulf and Grendel are noticeably different, but at the same time alike in many ways. The people in the story may not have notice the similarities, but they could not be hidden from the peering eye of the reader. In the story Beowulf was was brave, while Grendel was cowardly, Beowulf was helpful, while Grendel only wanted to hurt people; in comparison, they were both unnaturally strong and very arrogant. To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar s men. He did this while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. Mean while, Beowulf liked to meet a problem head on, in this case the problem was Grendel himself. Determined Beowulf sailed to Denmark to defeat Grendel, telling Hrothgar that he will take Grendel s life with his bare hands. As told in the story, That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till it s life/ leaped out (Raffel, 1963, l. 366 368). He graduated from Selma High School, he also received a BA from the University of California in 1975 and later got his Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University. His rich education background and experience, therefore, qualifies him for his work, especially his book: Carnage and Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise of Western Power. He looks at the army and warfare in terms of men, technology, valour and victory (Hanson 68). He also discusses the west?s militarism tradition. A tradition supports mobilization of citizen soldiers and animating them with principles of collective endeavor. According to Victor Hanson, it is the west?s tradition that has helped them develop and maintain a strong military power. Hanson struggles to recreate nine ?landmark? episodes of combat through which the west gradually started their rise to the top. In this approach, three classical period episodes are depicted to show the situational onset of the rise of the west as Salamis, Cannae and Gaugamela. Hanson depicts these battles to have manifested particular western lethal military machinery. Moreover, the chronology is given a vivid progression when the author depicts that gradual spread of the western style war machinery through three additional battles as Tenochtitlan, Poitiers and Lepanto. The author eventually examined the gradual mechanism of battle spread from Europe into the west. The distinct military style of invincibility is further traced through Midway, Rorke?s Drift and Tet. John Lynn, on the other hand, tries to conceptualize the relationship between practical dimensions of war and cultural factors. Although he tries to undermine Victor Hanson?s idea of war, he discusses the realities of combat and discourse of war based on social and political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Understanding how life began on Earth requires knowledge of the astronomical, geological, and atmospheric settings. However, those settings are in turn dependent on knowing the time period when life arose, which comes from the fossil and molecular records, including molecular clocks based on genetic mutations. Interrelated with the setting is the chemistry that generates the organic molecules used to assemble the first cells and carry the genetic information to successive generations of cells. The supramolecular structure itself contains the chemistry that fuels its movement. The system produces not only more surfactant but protons resulting in acidification of the environment immediately surrounding the oil droplet. • 41. Psychological Factor That Affect Sports Performance Arousal is a psychological factor that can affect sports performance and is defined as the level of activation or readiness that an individual will experience when faced with a task (Malpeli 2010, pg. 369). Effective performance requires an athlete to achieve optimal arousal which can be recognised in certain arousal theories (Malpeli 2010, pg. 369). The level of arousal that is considered to be optimal varies among every individual (Abernethy 2013, pg. 304). High arousal can affect performance as it often leads to more tense muscles, higher blood pressures, heart rates and respiration rates (Abernethy 2013, pg. 302). In comparison to high arousal, low arousal can lead to a lack of motivation, tiredness, lethargic muscles and a drop in enthusiasm and concentration and therefore a decrease in performance (Malpeli 2010, pg. 369). Personality is another psychological factor that can affect sports performance and can be defined as the multiple characteristics in which an individual possesses to make them unique (Abernethy 2013, pg. 298). People who are usually introverted like things more quiet and are often good at concentrating whereas people who are extroverts are generally more excited and lack concentration which can affect sports performance (Honeybourne 2003). • 42. Military Strategy and Planning Part 1 Military theory after World War II drastically changed for two major reasons: the dropping of Atomic weapons on Japan and what would become known as the Cold War between the USSR and the West. Foreign policy, which became military policy, starting in 1947 is known as the Truman Doctrine. This began with U.S. support of Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent those countries from falling under Soviet influence. The policy was written as a response to the events that took place in the Eastern European Theater after World War II. The Soviet Unioncoopted much of Eastern Europe, ½ of Germany, ½ of Berlin, and believed they needed an even greater buffer zone to protect Russiafrom the West. Greece and Turkey were logical extensions of this because both had been devastated during WWII and had strong socialist parties. Truman believed that if Greece and Turkey did not receive the aid they needed, they would inevitable fall to Soviet influence. The intended audience was wide: this was a clear message to the Soviet Union; a message to Europe that the U.S. would not tolerate Soviet aggression; a message to the people of Greece and Turkey that the U.S. would side with them; and a message to Congress and the American people that the U.S. would put in a formal policy to prevent the spread of worldwide communism. • 48. Theme Of Foreshadowing In The Sixth Sense The director M. Night Shyamalan used different methods to construct and format the theme of the film, The Sixth Sense . He uses foreshadowing, symbolism and motif to help the viewer understand the movie and see that it is more than what you first perceive. In The Sixth Sense a boy named Cole Sear has a sixth sense that is haunting him at the beginning of the movie. He sees things that other people can t see. He can also hear things that other people can t. He can see ghosts, among people as if living like nothing ever happened. A Doctor named Dr. Malcolm Crowe tries to help Cole with his problem until he realizes that Cole is very much like one of his other patients, Vincent Grey, who was a boy that had the exact same symptoms. Ultimately the director uses foreshadowing, symbolism and motif to construct the theme of communication within the film. Throughout the movie, The Sixth Sensedirector M. Night Shyamala utilizes foreshadowing to hint to the viewers what will happen next throughout the film. Foreshadowing was used as a valuable tool more than just once throughout the motion picture. For example, in the beginning Vincent Grey breaks into Dr. Malcolm Crowe s home. Vincent Grey was a former patient of Crowe s. Throughout this emotional scene Vincent tells him that he had failed him and then Vincent shoots Crowe and himself. Dr. Crowe gets shot in the kidney. That would be a fatal wound to anyone. Although the audience doesn t know that, because that was only a flashback. The movie then moves to the next fall and it appears that Crowe is alive. This example indicates that Dr. Crowe is a ghost himself. Another instance of foreshadowing is Cole Sear is the only person to speak to Dr.Crowe throughout the film. Even though Dr. Crowe speaks and tries to communicate with other people, no one speaks back. Dr. Crowe only sees what he wants to see. This is also an indication Dr. Crowe is dead. As the film went on one may notice that Dr. Crowe only wore an undershirt, a shirt over it and a coat. And he switches all the time, but he never wears anything besides that.Living people usually change their clothes.
