Faye Abdellah Researches
Reasearches: Faye Glenn Abdellah (born 1919) dedicated her life to nursing and, as a researcher
and educator, helped change the profession s focus from a disease centered approach to a patient
centered approach. She served as a public health nurse for 40 years, helping to educate
Americans about the needs of the elderly and the dangers posed by AIDS, addiction, smoking,
and violence. As a nursing professor, she developed teaching methods based on scientific
research. Abdellah continued to work as a leader in the nursing profession into her eighties.
Abdellah was born on March 13, 1919, in New York City. Years later, on May 6, 1937, the German
hydrogen fueled airship Hindenburg exploded over Lakehurst, New Jersey, where 18 year old...

As her career progressed, her research evolved to include physiology, chemistry, and behavioral
sciences. In 1957 Abdellah headed a research team in Manchester, Connecticut, that established
the groundwork for what became known as progressive patient care. In this framework, critical
care patients were treated in an intensive care unit, followed by a transition to immediate care,
and then home care. The first two segments of the care program proved very popular within the
caregiver profession. Abdellah is also credited with developing the first nationally tested coronary
care unit as an outgrowth of her work in Manchester. The third phase of the progressive patient
care equation home care was not widely accepted in the mid twentieth century. Abdellah explained
in her Image interview that Short sighted people at the time kept saying home care would mean
having a maid (nurse) in everyone s home. They could not understand that home care with nurses
teaching self care would be a way of helping patients regain independent function. Forty years later
home care had become an essential part of long term health care. Established Standards In another
innovation within her field, Abdellah developed the Patient Assessment of Care Evaluation
(PACE), a system of standards used to measure the relative quality of individual health care
facilities that was still used in the health care industry into the 21st century. She was also one of the

Social Bonds and Deviance Goes Against the Norm
Social Bonds and Deviance
Deviance is a term used to describe behavior that goes against the established social and cultural
norms. The concept of deviance is complex because norms vary considerably across groups, times,
and places. Essentially, individuals commit deviant behavior when society defines it as such.
Within the field of criminology, a number of theories exist that attempt to explain why some people
engage in deviant behavior, while others abstain from it. One of these theories is Travis Hirschi s,
social bond theory, which eventually becomes the blueprint for subsequent control theories. This
paper will analyze aspects of social control theory and social bonds, for the purpose of seeing if
they can deter deviant behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, according to Thornberry s interactional theory, the absence or weakening of
social control is a necessary, but not a sufficient condition for delinquent involvement (Cartwright,
2011, p. 229). Laub and Sampson s turning points theory was also rooted in Durkheim s views,
Hirschi s social bond theory and Thornberry s interactional theory. Laub and Sampson s theory
concluded that some social events may change delinquents from a path of crime and this event is
called a turning point. Closer to the present time, Bouffard and Petkovsek conducted a study
which explores the process through which social bonds work to restrain offending criminal
behavior. This was primarily based on Hirschi s social bonding theory and looks at the decision to
drive drunk. All of the above mentioned theorists are intricately connected through their theories,
which are based on some aspect of their respective predecessors, and their view that all individuals
are bonded to society.
Hirschi s, social bond theory, looks at how delinquency is the result of weak or broken bonds
between the individual and society. He states that there are four aspects of the bond, and their
relationship between each other, that affect our connection to society (Cartwright, 2011). These
four are: attachment, commitment, involvement in conventional activities, and lastly belief in
wider social values. Hirschi defines attachment to others as the degree to which we admire

Since The Age Of Enlightenment, People Have Put Emphasis
Since the Age of Enlightenment, people have put emphasis on words such as how and
why in order to acquire knowledge. To this day, an insatiable desire for information and
understanding can be found in every discipline. More specifically, in the field of criminology, there
s an extensive battle to identify the etiology of drug abuse. This heightened effort is rationalized by
the fact that, in 2007 alone, drug abuse drained $200 billion from the American people in the form
of healthcare, criminal justice, and legal costs (American Addiction Centers N.d.). To stop the
depletion of national resources any further, it s imperative to look at the variables surrounding the
issue so that a definitive solution can be procured. By way of ... Show more content on

In other words, parents who demand very little and lack responsiveness, such as unengaged
parents, leave their child open to corruption and allow them to develop deviant tendencies.
Baumrind (1975:36) reiterates this in her case study, stating that extremely competent children
are never products of homes in which both parents demonstrate noninvolvement in care taking .
Both of these studies concluded that the amount of restraint involved in any given parenting
style has a direct correlation to how heavily reliant people become on illicit drugs. Nearly every
family has a keepsake or tradition that is passed on from person to person. Likewise, everybody
has a couple of distinct idiosyncrasies that they ve picked up from their own family. For this
reason, it s important to incorporate the family s history of drug abuse into the discussion. In a
like manner, doctors will often begin their search for a diagnosis by asking if there is any
pertinent medical history in the family. This is primarily because, when conducting research, the
family history method is the quickest and easiest way to either rule out possibilities or to support
hypotheses (Andreasen, Rice, Endicott, Reich, Coryell 1986:421). For some, the use of illegal
substances is commonplace in their lives. Perhaps it even facilitates a bonding ritual between
relatives. However, whether they ve grown

Is the poet saying that the young man now understands that he will lose his own youth and passion,
after listening to the lamentations in the three preceding quatrains? Or is the poet saying that the
young man now is aware of the poet s imminent demise, and this knowledge makes the young man
s love for the poet stronger because he might soon loose him? What must the young man give up
before long his youth or his friend? The answer could lie in the interpretation of both the young man
s and the poet s character in other sonnets.
*****
Sonnets 71 74 are typically analyzed as a group, linked by the poet s thoughts of his own mortality.
However, Sonnet 73 contains many of the themes common throughout the entire body of sonnets,
including the ravages of time on one s physical well being and the mental anguish associated with
moving further from youth and closer to death. Time s destruction of great monuments juxtaposed
with the effects of age on human beings is a convention seen before, most notably in Sonnet 55.
The poet is preparing his young friend, not for the approaching literal death of his body, but the
metaphorical death of his youth and passion. The poet s deep insecurities swell irrepressibly as he
concludes that the young man is now focused only on the signs of his aging as the poet surely is
himself. This is illustrated by the linear development of the three quatrains.

Pepsico Case Study
Introduction The Uniform Commercial Code defines a contract as the total legal obligation which
results from the parties agreement as affected by the Uniform Commercial code or any other
applicable rules of law (Liuzzo, 2016, p.106). The purpose a contract is to create an oral or written
agreement between two parties. In the mid 1990 s PepsiCo. ran a promotional campaign Pepsi Stuff,
(nonfps, 2007). The campaign attempts to engage and reward the consumer who bought PepsiCo
products. Consumers would earn Pepsi points for any Pepsi products they bought. When a person
earns a certain quantities of points he or she receives certain prizes. One commercial advertises a
Harrier Jet in exchange for 7,000,0000 points (Haoues, 2015). In... Show more content on

This includes such information as when, where, and why the offer would take place. However,
according to the UCC if one or more terms, are not in the contract the offer may not be invalid as
long as the offer is definite and certain (Liuzzo, 2016). Second an offer must be communicated to
the offeree. This is so the offeree is adequately informed prior to making their decision. The
offeror communicates the offer orally or written to the offeree (Liuzzo, 2016). Lastly, an offer
has to be made with a genuine intention that the offeror will be bound by it (Liuzzo, 2016). The
offer cannot be made in anger or jest or under severe emotional strain (Liuzzo, 2016). For
example, if a boss jokes that he would sell his house to the next person who bought him a coffee,
and then his assistant bought him a coffee, it is very unlikely that she would be able to sue in for
his house in court. Thus, if the offer is not made with any actual intent is not a valid offer (Liuzzo,
2016). Did PepsiCo make an offer?
In order to determine if Pepsi, as the supposed offeror made to be an offer all three components
of an offer must be analyzed. The first requirement an offer has to fulfill is that it is made on
definite and certain terms. The offer did specify the quantity requirement of points to receive a
Harrier Jet in their commercial (nonfps, 2007). In addition PepsiCo also offers the other products in
the commercial that the company did intend to exchange for Pepsi

Essay about Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy is a major problem in the United States. There are significantly more teenage
pregnancies in the United States than all other developing countries (Cleo Moore, 1995).
According to The Complete and Authoritative Guide: Caring for Your Teenager, out of every five
women under twenty, two will become pregnant. Teen pregnancy rates have increased 23% from
1972 to 1990 (Napier, 1997) In order to come to a solution it is important to examine why teenage
pregnancy is so high in the United States. When analyzing teen pregnancy, an effective way to get
to the root of the problem is using the critical component of the sociological imagination. Critically,
the two most prevalent ways to look at teen pregnancy are through a... Show more content on

Liberals believe socioeconomic status is a factor in teen pregnancy. They want to put a stop to
blaming the youth. Liberals understand it is time to examine why some teens want to become
parents. When teens don t see a successful future for themselves, getting pregnant isn t that bad of
an option. Factors in teen pregnancy are a perception of unattainable goals, and lack of educational
and occupational prospects, both prevailing in poor communities. Dash (1989) concluded that child
rearing provides a tangible economic and psychological asset for black teens whose future
prospects are bleak. There are more African Americans living in extreme povertythan Latinos and
Whites (Ralley, pg#). In the journal article, Internal Poverty and Teen Pregnancy, the life options
model is proposed. The life options model suggests that, If disadvantaged youths do not perceive
that doors are open to them, it is perhaps difficult for them to see teen pregnancy as closing any
doors (Young, Sue Martin, 2001) Young, Sue Martin (2001) examined adolescent females
educational expectations. They found that females of all races who became pregnant had lower
expectations of educational attainment and likelihood they would graduate high school, compared
to their nonpregnant counterpart. There is a significant amount of evidence that

In Thirteen Reasons Why, Clay receives tapes from his deceased friend and high school crush
Hannah Baker. The tapes create a panic stricken atmosphere because with the tape, the characters,
specifically Clay, actually hear Hannah s voice explain why she has given up. Similarly to the
sketchbook, the tapes give Clay insight on why Hannah committed suicide while describing the
pain she was going through. Through the sketchbook and the tapes the reader is exposed to the
hurting emotions the suicidal characters endured. It is clear that Hannah as well as Glory s
mother were depressed and were strongly impacted by the people around them. Through Hannah s
tapes Clay realizes the horrid encounters Hannah had and because of the sketchbook Glory learns
about the suffering her mother was going through while living her everyday life. Being exposed to
these pieces of literature reminds teenagers that their peers could be going through similar
situations, creating awareness of the issues that could arise in a person s life. The passages in both
the books also emphasize the emotions Clay and Glory went through while they were trying to
understand why the people they love committed suicide. With that being said, another concept
highlighted in these novels is the impact suicide could have on the people who were connected to
the individual who passed. Glory constantly thinks about the suicide of her

Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) a film based on a true story by Australian director Philip Noyce set in
Western Australia in 1931 is a very mean and angry attack on the Australian government s in order
for the science of creating better races of people policy toward mixed race people. Continuing
policies begun by the British, the white government in Australia for sixty years forcibly removed
all mixed race (people that have existed from the beginning in Australia) from their families to

Next, completion of a wash and then an iodine solution is added to the smear to enhance staining

Issues And Objectives Of The Commercial Bank Of Ontario
Issues Objectives is as follows:
As Jackie Patrick, loans officer for the Commercial Bank of Ontario, the key issue is whether or

Actors Must Go Beyond Immitation and Become the Character
What is acting, who are people which we can name actors? In fact we are all actors. Every single
human being is an actor in his everyday life. Yet acting can be subdivided into two parts depending
on a professional basis or daily one. Within the professional acting there are two major categories,
Imitation and the art of becoming. Imitation, is when an actor tries to mime or imitate a certain
character by talking the same way and making similar physical gestures that the character him self
would normally do. Yet imitating is not enough because although the actor mimes a character, he

The most important factor under physiological instrument is the voice, which includes how to
breathe, speak, project and control the many powers that one can control with his voice.
Furthermore, another main factor to be considered is the physiological instrument. This instrument
is used to control ones physical relaxation, muscular control, economy of action, and expressive
rhythms and movement patterns. All these help the character maintain an act or hold stage
throughout an entire performance. Imagination and surprise are very important weapons or power
for an actor. Helping the actor to bring reality and spontaneity to the stage.
Yet the most important of all is discipline. For the life of an actor is not a very easy life to lead.
They require a lot of work, concentration, and patience at the most obscure hours of the day. They
should be in control of themselves and know how to deal with people and most importantly how
to deal with his co workers. Being a disciplined actor does not mean slavery, yet he or she is
required to know how to work rigorously to develop his or her physiological and psychological
instrument.
Furthermore, another important factor is the actor s approach. Under this category, there are two
traditional methods that actors usually follow. The first is the external or technical and the internal
or truthful. The external method is when the actor acts out physically the role without regard to

Carnage And Culture Summary
In his book, Carnage and Culture, Victor Davis Hanson, a military historian and professor at
California State University, reasons that the west and its armies have been the most lethal and
effective force in the world because of the inseparability between armies and their cultures. He
illustrates the cultural superiority of the west by explaining the tenets of western society (freedom,
citizenship, right to property, capitalism, and individualism) and applies them to nine landmark
battles in which the west take part. Hanson uses the term Western to refer to the culture of classical
antiquity that arose in Greece and Rome; survived the collapse of the Roman Empire; spread to

the landmark battles he covers, but to say western society has had those given tenets throughout
history or that places other than the west haven t had similar societies (even before the age of

his thesis. Not only does he only choose nine battles from the countless number of landmark
battles that have happened in the west but a couple of the battles seem to counter his thesis (i.e.

I have chosen an original psychology classic based on Sigmund Freud. The title of my review is
The Interpretation of Dreams . This book was written to find out why do we actually dream and
what does it mean in our psychological lives. In Freud s view, dream is viewed as wish fulfilment.
It is known as the satisfaction of a desire through an involuntary process. Therefore it can occur in
dreams or daydreams in the symptoms or neurosis or hallucination of psychosis. It requires
interpretation to recognize this satisfaction.
I chose this book to explore whether our dreams do mean anything, and whether it does symbolise
and influence our past and future. The points that I will be talking about The Interpretation of

perceived from the manifest content of the dream. As stated by Freud, that children s dream are
easy to understand but some are unquestionable. In early childhood, dream distortion makes its
appearance. It also has been recorded that children from age five to eight years have showed
characteristics of later dreams. However, dreams that are of a so called infantile character will
be discovered if you limit yourselves to the age beginning with conscious psychic activity. Some
dreams of these phenomena will be found in the later period of childhood occasionally. Dreams
that proximately resemble the typically infantile ones even occur under certain conditions among
adults. Based on the information gained from these children s dreams with ease, it is hope to
prove conclusion of universal application. To understand these dreams there is no need for
technical methods and analysis. There is no need to question the child who is giving information
of his dream but the story taken from the life of the child should be added. It will eventually be
explained to us the previous day. Based on the experiences of the day, the dream is a sleep reaction

The Automotive Sector in Italy
The Automotive Sector in Italy I.Introduction: Sector Analysis Part A: Out of all the countries I
have visited in my life, Italy is definitely my favorite. Italy is located in southern Europe
bordering countries such as France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. With a population of over
sixty million people, Italy has a capitalist market with high GDP per capita and a well developed
infrastructure. According to the International Monetary Fund, it is the eighth largest economy in
the entire world and third biggest in Europe. After analyzing the National Institute of Statistics
(ISTAT), the GDP of Italy expanded by 10% in the fourth quarter of last year. From 1960 2013,
the GDP growth rate averaged 63% per year. Their main industrial base is driven by producing
high quality consumer goods. The main sectors in Italy are tourism, iron and steel, machinery,
textiles, food processing, shoes, clothing (fashion), and one of the biggest being the auto sector.
Italy joined the European Union in 1952, and between then and now, their country has gone through
growth rates well above 4%. However, after 1992, Italy s expansion rates fell below the European
Union average. Ever since then, Italy s government has been trying to revive their economy by
increasing the amount of public spending. In result, the public debt and budget deficit have attained
unsustainable levels and the country has recently gone through a tough recession. Now in 2014,
Italy has actually returned to growth after

Russian Ballet Dance In The 17th And 18th Century
Poverty and other major problems involving constant combatant situations and invasions Russia
faced in the 17th and 18th centuries led to many adaptations of performance and arts which were
centered around dancing. Due to the exclusivity of proper ballet teachings from known academies
many lower class Russian citizens were innovative in the creation of their own balletperformances.
Unlike the higher social classes who found great significance to formality and the esteem which
surrounded Russian ballet, the lower class had their own take on ballet. Lower class Russian
citizens adapted ballet dances through their peers who had commonly been instructed from a
handful of other interpretations of the dance. (Schmidt, 1988). Because the Russian ballet
academies were selective and difficult to attend many versions of the ballet were formed based
upon various interpretations of the dance. Most commonly ballet dances which were performed by
those who were not receiving ballet direction from institutions were more inventive and lively than
the serious demeanor of formal performances of Russian Ballet.

differences has great prominence in the cultural identity of the country. ... Show more content on

Narrative Essay On Christian Boarding School
The year was 2010, I was a senior in high school and it was Thanksgiving night. I felt sick to my
stomach. The anxiety I felt kept me from enjoying the thanksgiving dinner. I counted and counted
the days back, it had been six weeks since I last had a period. That night I drove to deliver my
boyfriend thanksgiving dinner. I also intended to pick up the pregnancytest he had for me. That
night when all the lights were out and my parents asleep, I quietly tiptoed to the bathroom. I was
eager to know my fate. While waiting for the results to appear, my heart sunk. I felt my heart in
my stomach. The test stick was ready. My heart beat rapidly, my hands trembled as I picked up the

Pregnant girls are not something you see wandering down the halls. I realized I had to leave due to
my circumstances. I remember my mother calling the dean, informing her I would not be
returning on Monday from thanksgiving break. She lied said I was sick. My mother was
reluctant to give word of my pregnancy. A few days later the pastor from my church, Pastor
Larry Mays informed the school principal the real reason I would not be returning. One of the
hardest things I had to do after becoming pregnant, was gathering up my belongings from school.
I felt horrible as I packed up my clothes. My mom sat on the bed in my dorm room with a look of
great disappointment. I didn t have a chance to say bye to any friends, I don t think I could have
faced them if I did. I was so embarrassed. I had no idea what I would say. Once I was back home
after picking up my belongings, my pastor helped me enroll at the high school in my town. One day
I went to fill out forms, as I walked down the halls students stared. Suddenly, I knew I couldn t
attend the high school and be that pregnant girl. I begged for a different alternative. fortunately,
there were online courses available and that s what I did. I hid myself away from the outside
world. I concluded my senior year of high school online. I could have marched with the
graduating class of the high school I took the courses through, but it didn t feel right in my heart.
I picked up my diploma from the schools office. I felt devastated. I missed out on walking with
my friends from boarding school. I missed out on an important event in a person s life. I couldn t

Schools Need 21st Century Materials And Resources
Schools need 21st century materials and resources to serve 21st century students. There needs to be
a change in ideology regarding the function of the library in todays society. For centuries, libraries
have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the
greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses.
(Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet and online information libraries need to
rebrand themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real
time, and the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with
other agencies devoted to educationand information. John Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests
that, Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively
with partner intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage
organizations. (2015) More agencies are partnering up to give their patrons access to the best and
most credible information.

Reflection and Analysis of Chaconne from Partita in D...
My musical selection was Chaconne from Partita in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed
by The Eroica Trio. I listened to this piece, lasting fourteen minutes and forty eight seconds, through
the online classical music library. This piece was composed in 1720 during the Baroque Era and
exhibits many features characteristic of Baroque music, which will be analyzed later in this paper.
This chaconne is considered to be one of the most intense pieces of musicBach ever wrote,
according to the La Jolla Music Society. In order to fully understand this piece a variety of
information will be presented including a synopsis of Bach s life, background on the piece, a
listening chart for this chaconne, the events occurring in society that impacted music and art in the
Baroque Era and an analysis of the composition with reference to typical Baroque musical
characteristics.
In order to understand his music, it is important to overview Bach s life and the affect he had on
the musical realm. Music was the obvious career for Johann Sebastian Bach as he was born to a
family of musicians, extending back several generations. According to the book, A History of
Baroque Music, by George Beulow, No other composer had as unique a family lineage, which
extended from the sixteenth into the early nineteenth century, with more than fifty Bachs who were
actively engaged in the music profession (Beulow, 503). Johann s father was the town musician and
taught him how to play violin. At a

generations. Mitchell Hall and Fry strongly support the stance that there was a large generation gap

The Problem Of The Infant
Thinking about these events, I developed the following theory on what could have occurred that
evening: At least one adult Bigfoot brought the infant to my house, creating a diversion by
scratching on the front door. Then, with our attention on the front of the house, they crept around to
the back of the house. The adult lifted the infant over the rail, then set it down on the deck. The
infant was too small to reach the carpet without taking one step, in the snow, on the deck, thus
leaving a footprint. It then made its way around the glass table, walking on the carpet, which had
very little snow on it. The infant opened the dog foot tub, consuming the dog food. The parent then

The next morning, I went out before daylight to check the ash for footprints. To my shock and
surprise, it had worked!! In the ash, on the front left corner of my house, was a very clear
footprint! Retrieving my video camera, I began to take video in the low light conditions due to
inclement weather forecast to move in later that morning. The ash had also stuck to the bottom of
the Bigfoot s foot, this a positive print of the foot in the grass. It appeared from the direction of
the prints, the Bigfoot s destination back of the house, possibly to go over the four foot dog fence
into the backyard. The track was fifteen inches long, with the ball of the foot five and a half inches
wide, the heel of the footprint was four inches wide. Unfortunately, this was an isolated event. The
Bigfoot learn quickly, and though I continued to put the fireplace ash out when the weather would
cooperate, the Bigfoot avoided stepping into the ash.
We would continue to allow the Bigfoot to eat our dog food as the winter wore on. We did this
because, we did not know how the Bigfoot would react if we abruptly removed their food
source. In February of 2011, the Bigfoot began to develop a pattern of visiting approximately
once every ten days. The scratching on the door stopped and the dog food was taken less often. In
early March of 2011, my wife threw out about a dozen overripe clementines. She threw them into

Genetically Modified Organisms And The Food
Do you know exactly what is in the food you eat every day? Do you read the food labels every
time you eat different food? Are companies, factories, or stores stating the truth when they claim
that their food is organic or natural ? The answer is probably no, unless you really are interested in
what you eat. But for the most part, a great majority of the population in this country have no idea
what is in their food. Most of them probably don t even know what the definition of the word
organic or natural and just assume that if foods have that labeled then they automatically are better
than other food who don t claim they are. Also, consumers have little knowledge on organisms
that are a major part of foods we eat on a daily basis. These organisms are called genetically
modified organismor also known as GMOs. These are organisms whose DNA has been changed
or altered, through a processed called genetic engineering, to change its characteristics in order to
make the food, as they claim, better. According to the Center for Food Safety (CFS), Currently, up
to 92% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered (GE), as are 94% of soybeans and 94% of cotton. It
has been estimated that upwards of 75% of processed foods on supermarket shelves contain

The Military Is Too Big For Our Country

of people who join because they wantto do well for America. The militaryshould only consist of
people who want to be patriotic to their country rather than use the government for their benefits

The Impact Of Historic Events On The Social Environment...
identity can change over time in a society with the effects of historic events, changes in the social
environment and the active participation of the people to create new social constructs and
institutions. In order for nationalism to even start several prerequisites had to be met. These were
the creation of a print system for books to be created. These books would spread the ideas of
nationalism, the enlightenment and other philosophical movements across the world. Next is the
capitalist system which would naturally seek to reach a larger audience and thus a larger profit
margin which lead to the development of the vernacular print. Print in vernacular allowed for
regular people to read the ideas printed in the books and understand them, which ultimately spread
the ideas and values of these cognitive revolutions to the common man. These changes to written
language changed its role forever. In the past, written language was reserved specifically for the
political, intellectual, or religious elite. The religious elite especially relied on the control of the
written word to control and influence the thoughts of the masses, and this was true for most, if not
all religions across the world. A consequence of written language being used by the common people
to spread the ideas of the enlightenment allowed for the dismantlement of the concept of rule by
divine right. The spread of rationalism in turn encouraged the use of rational discourse amongst the

Maxine Hong Kingston By Maxine Kong
Maxine Hong Kingston prides herself on her personal strength and character, as well as the
ability she developed to assert herself into a culture that is not accepting of her differences. As the
daughter of Chinese immigrants living in the US, she was tasked with living a double life,
straddling the line between her traditional Chinese upbringing and the environment outside of her
home in 1960 s California. She was in many ways a perfectly normal and intelligent child.
Through her writing she is able to describe complex interactions from her childhood, detailing her
reasoning and understanding of the world. Despite this cleverness and flexibility, she begins her
account by describing herself as voiceless, seemingly dumb, and explains how it was that she
failed kindergarten. Through this story we get a view of how an intelligent young person might
experience difficulties caused by cultural differences, a unique perspective from a first generation
American. In this excerpt from Woman Warrior, Kingston recounts her experiences as a young
person without a voice. Her struggle is deepened by the culturally engrained xenophobia and
misogyny that existed in her diverse neighborhood, as well as pressures and extreme obstacles
thrown at her by her own mother. The child whom Kingston describes goes through continuous
growth in finding her own identity and strength in character, but it is clear that she still carries the
fear and pain created by her uniquely difficult

him to branch away from traditional ukiyo e subjects to the daily Japanese life and landscapes.
In 1798, Hokusai passed on his name to his pupil and set out as an independent artist with the

The Ones Who Walk Away From House Of By Ursula K. Le Guin
If the hypothesis were offered to us of a world in which Messrs. Fourier s and Bellamy s and

what except a specific and independent sort of emotion can it be which would make us immediately

They find a way to live with the guilt. Whether they hold their children tighter, chose not to think
about the youth, or are not bothered by it, most of them just live with it.
This story was published in the year 1973; and looking at the history of what was going on in
America at that time, it is impossible to say that Ursula s writing wasn t affected by the events
occurring in that time period. The first wave feminist movement was prominent during the time,
just as the Vietnam war was still being fought, as well as many technological and scientific
changes occurring in the world. My argument is that Ursula wrote this story to combat the
utilitarian mindset that is found is so many, especially during the 1960s 1970s, and still today.
The mindset that these people in Omelas believe, that as long as it benefits the majority then
harming one is not wrong. The lesson in this story while being written in the 1970s is still highly
relevant today, when bringing in modern day politics and the top 10% vs the 90% in America.
The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a cautionary story, that goes deep into the psyche of

Iberia. By 1200, the indigenous Christian inhabitants of al Andalushad, for the most part, been
forcibly converted or rooted out. The only Christians left in the area were prisoners of war,
mercenaries, and merchants. To emphasize the severity of the treatment of the dhimmis by the
Almohad rulers, in 1224, an Almohad chronicler, al Marrakushi, made the claim that, No pact of
protection has been signed between us and the Jews or the Christians since the rise of Almohad
power. It was not only the Christians who were persecuted by the Almohad movement, as Jews
were also the object of abject discrimination. In addition to his previous statement, al Marrakushi
also noted that In all the regions of the west there are no synagogues or churches. The Almohads
under Caliph Yaqub (1194 1199) became increasingly paranoid about crypto Judaism in Jewish
families which had converted to Islam. Such was his paranoia and contempt for these families that
he demanded that they put on a humiliating garb consisting of black clothing with sleeves that
reached all the way down to the wearer s ankles in addition to a hat with ear flaps. It was in this
manner that the Jewish ethnicity was discriminated against

Comparison Of Beloved And Ceremony
Beloved, written by Toni Morrison in 1987, and Ceremony, written by Leslie Marmon Silko in
1977, have many overlapping characteristics. The two novels discuss finding identity through
culture and the importance of tradition. Beloved tells the story of an ex slave named Sethe and her
daughter Denver. They resided in a house haunted by the ghost of Sethe s child, named Beloved.
Beloved came back to haunt the familyin human form and attempted to tear the family apart. In the
end, Sethe s neighbors, who abandoned the family many years before, come back to exorcise the
baby ghost and rid the family of all of its misfortune. The title Ceremony is based on the oral
traditions and the ceremonial practices that the Native American people partook... Show more

They use stories to pass down all of their past, including history, science, religious beliefs and
many more subjects. One of the poems goes like this: Ts its tsi nako, Thought Woman, is sitting
in her room and what ever she thinks about appears. She thought of her sisters, Nau ts ity i and I
tcs i, and together they created the Universe this world and the four worlds below. Thought
Woman, the spider, named things and as she named them they appeared (Silko, page 1). This
poem shows how poems pass down the Native Americans heritage from past to future generations.
This discussed how they believed the world was created, which is part of their religion. Silko uses
poems as her way of showing their oral tradition and they are used throughout the novel. The stories
represent the Native American understanding of the world for Tayo, even though the white
people tried to make him believe they were false. He became very confused for a long time in
his life, but once he begins reenacting these stories he reconnects with his community and feels
complete again. The stories take away his loneliness because his whole community shares them
because they have gone through similar experiences. The influence that stories have on his
culture is described like this, They aren t just entertainment. Don t be fooled. They are all we
have, you see, all we have to fight off illness and death. You don t have anything if you don t
have the stories. Their evil is mighty but it can t stand up to our stories. So they try to destroy the
stories let the stories be confused or forgotten (Silko, page 2). This quote is saying that the
storytelling is what is keeping the Native American tribes connected and if these stories are not told
anymore, then their culture will fall apart. Storytelling in both Beloved and Ceremony controls the
lives of all the characters and

Dear Mom And Dad,. I Completely Understand Why You Are
Dear Mom and Dad, I completely understand why you are concerned about my use of marijuana
not only for the well being of this family but also for my own health and future. I definitely
understand your concerns, but you need to understand that you grew up in a completely different
generation than me. Marijuana use is very common now days not only in The United States but
all around the world. Many people who you interact with every day have at one point in their
lives or even currently smoke marijuana, yet they are still able support their families, have a
steady job, and even in my situation get a good education. One of the reasons you haven t realized
this is because there are no long term effects and while on the drug most people are... Show more

Now I understand that the two of you believe that marijuana is a gateway drug but I have done
excessive research and I can assure you that it is in in no shape or form a gateway drug . The
gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used
marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. The
theory implies that there is a causal mechanism that biologically sensitizes drug users, making
them more willing to try and more desirous of harder drugs. Yet the gateway hypothesis doesn t
make sense to those who use marijuana or have used in the past. Research shows that the vast
majority of marijuana users do not go on to use hard drugs. Many users compare their daily
cannabis habit with dependency on caffeine. The UK Department of Health say Cannabis is a
weakly addictive drug but does induce dependence in a significant minority of heavy users. If you
are a regular cannabis smoker (every day) and you stop smoking, you will experience some of the
following withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, nausea, sleep
disturbance, sweats, and intense dreams. These symptoms, however, are mild and short lived,
lasting 2 to 4 days. With such negligible withdrawal symptoms, it is not surprising that quitting
marijuana is so easy, especially for someone with very strong will power, such as myself.

The Wedding Of Ursula Essay
When telling the story of Ursula s childhood, Lawrence tells us early on that, Ursula was the one
for realities. (259). From this point it is apparent that her story is going to be different. While
she relies on the hard realities of life and is very caught up in the things outside of her, her mind
body conscious self is just as active as Tom or Anna s. In fact, it may be even stronger for her
because she seems to be more aware of it: She became aware of herself, that she was a separate
entity in the midst of an unseparated obscurity, that she must go somewhere, she must become
something. (Lawrence 281). She has her first experience with love at an early age, when she
encounters Anton Skrebensky. At one point during their courtship, Anton comes to the wedding of
Ursula s uncle, Fred, and Ursula has a very distinct experience similar to the one her mother Anna
had in the cornfield. At the touch of her hand on his arm, his... Show more content on

It was a glaucous, intertwining, delicious flux and contest in flux...She turned, and saw a great
white moon looking at her over the hill. And her breast opened to it, she was cleaved like a
transparent jewel to its light. She stood filled with the full moon, offering herself. Her two
breasts opened to make way for it, her body opened wide like a quivering anemone, a soft, dilated
invitation touched by the moon. She wanted the moon to fill in to her, she wanted more, more
communion with the moon, consummation. (Lawrence 316 17). In this passage, Ursula s will is
dancing in a way with Skrebensky s, but it is always separate. The moon has some deeper
significance for her, as it did for Anna, as it pierces the darkness, entering and becoming her

Faye Abdellah Researches Reasearches: Faye Glenn Abdellah (born 1919) dedicated her life to nursing and, as a researcher and educator, helped change the profession s focus from a disease centered approach to a patient centered approach. As a nursing professor, she developed teaching methods based on scientific research. Abdellah continued to work as a leader in the nursing profession into her eighties. In this framework, critical care patients were treated in an intensive care unit, followed by a transition to immediate care, and then home care. The first two segments of the care program proved very popular within the caregiver profession. Abdellah is also credited with developing the first nationally tested coronary care unit as an outgrowth of her work in Manchester. The third phase of the progressive patient care equation home care was not widely accepted in the mid twentieth century. Abdellah explained in her Image interview that Short sighted people at the time kept saying home care would mean having a maid (nurse) in everyone s home. They could not understand that home care with nurses teaching self care would be a way of helping patients regain independent function. Forty years later home care had become an essential part of long term health care. Established Standards In another innovation within her field, Abdellah developed the Patient Assessment of Care Evaluation (PACE), a system of standards used to measure the relative quality of individual health care facilities that was still used in the health care industry into the 21st century. • 3. Social Bonds and Deviance Goes Against the Norm Social Bonds and Deviance Deviance is a term used to describe behavior that goes against the established social and cultural norms. The concept of deviance is complex because norms vary considerably across groups, times, and places. Essentially, individuals commit deviant behavior when society defines it as such. Within the field of criminology, a number of theories exist that attempt to explain why some people engage in deviant behavior, while others abstain from it. One of these theories is Travis Hirschi s, social bond theory, which eventually becomes the blueprint for subsequent control theories. This paper will analyze aspects of social control theory and social bonds, for the purpose of seeing if they can deter deviant behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, according to Thornberry s interactional theory, the absence or weakening of social control is a necessary, but not a sufficient condition for delinquent involvement (Cartwright, 2011, p. 229). Laub and Sampson s turning points theory was also rooted in Durkheim s views, Hirschi s social bond theory and Thornberry s interactional theory. Laub and Sampson s theory concluded that some social events may change delinquents from a path of crime and this event is called a turning point. Closer to the present time, Bouffard and Petkovsek conducted a study which explores the process through which social bonds work to restrain offending criminal behavior. This was primarily based on Hirschi s social bonding theory and looks at the decision to drive drunk. All of the above mentioned theorists are intricately connected through their theories, which are based on some aspect of their respective predecessors, and their view that all individuals are bonded to society. Hirschi s, social bond theory, looks at how delinquency is the result of weak or broken bonds between the individual and society. He states that there are four aspects of the bond, and their relationship between each other, that affect our connection to society (Cartwright, 2011). These four are: attachment, commitment, involvement in conventional activities, and lastly belief in wider social values. Hirschi defines attachment to others as the degree to which we admire ... To this day, an insatiable desire for information and understanding can be found in every discipline. This heightened effort is rationalized by the fact that, in 2007 alone, drug abuse drained $200 billion from the American people in the form of healthcare, criminal justice, and legal costs (American Addiction Centers N.d.). In other words, parents who demand very little and lack responsiveness, such as unengaged parents, leave their child open to corruption and allow them to develop deviant tendencies. Baumrind (1975:36) reiterates this in her case study, stating that extremely competent children are never products of homes in which both parents demonstrate noninvolvement in care taking . Both of these studies concluded that the amount of restraint involved in any given parenting style has a direct correlation to how heavily reliant people become on illicit drugs. Nearly every family has a keepsake or tradition that is passed on from person to person. Likewise, everybody has a couple of distinct idiosyncrasies that they ve picked up from their own family. For this reason, it s important to incorporate the family s history of drug abuse into the discussion. In a like manner, doctors will often begin their search for a diagnosis by asking if there is any pertinent medical history in the family. This is primarily because, when conducting research, the family history method is the quickest and easiest way to either rule out possibilities or to support hypotheses (Andreasen, Rice, Endicott, Reich, Coryell 1986:421). Is the poet saying that the young man now understands that he will lose his own youth and passion, after listening to the lamentations in the three preceding quatrains? Or is the poet saying that the young man now is aware of the poet s imminent demise, and this knowledge makes the young man s love for the poet stronger because he might soon loose him? What must the young man give up before long his youth or his friend? The answer could lie in the interpretation of both the young man s and the poet s character in other sonnets. ***** Sonnets 71 74 are typically analyzed as a group, linked by the poet s thoughts of his own mortality. However, Sonnet 73 contains many of the themes common throughout the entire body of sonnets, including the ravages of time on one s physical well being and the mental anguish associated with moving further from youth and closer to death. Time s destruction of great monuments juxtaposed with the effects of age on human beings is a convention seen before, most notably in Sonnet 55. The poet is preparing his young friend, not for the approaching literal death of his body, but the metaphorical death of his youth and passion. The poet s deep insecurities swell irrepressibly as he concludes that the young man is now focused only on the signs of his aging as the poet surely is himself. This is illustrated by the linear development of the three quatrains. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pepsico Case Study Introduction The Uniform Commercial Code defines a contract as the total legal obligation which results from the parties agreement as affected by the Uniform Commercial code or any other applicable rules of law (Liuzzo, 2016, p.106). The purpose a contract is to create an oral or written agreement between two parties. In the mid 1990 s PepsiCo. ran a promotional campaign Pepsi Stuff, (nonfps, 2007). The campaign attempts to engage and reward the consumer who bought PepsiCo products. Consumers would earn Pepsi points for any Pepsi products they bought. However, according to the UCC if one or more terms, are not in the contract the offer may not be invalid as long as the offer is definite and certain (Liuzzo, 2016). Second an offer must be communicated to the offeree. This is so the offeree is adequately informed prior to making their decision. The offeror communicates the offer orally or written to the offeree (Liuzzo, 2016). Lastly, an offer has to be made with a genuine intention that the offeror will be bound by it (Liuzzo, 2016). The offer cannot be made in anger or jest or under severe emotional strain (Liuzzo, 2016). For example, if a boss jokes that he would sell his house to the next person who bought him a coffee, and then his assistant bought him a coffee, it is very unlikely that she would be able to sue in for his house in court. Thus, if the offer is not made with any actual intent is not a valid offer (Liuzzo, 2016). Did PepsiCo make an offer? In order to determine if Pepsi, as the supposed offeror made to be an offer all three components of an offer must be analyzed. The first requirement an offer has to fulfill is that it is made on definite and certain terms. • 21. The Automotive Sector in Italy The Automotive Sector in Italy I.Introduction: Sector Analysis Part A: Out of all the countries I have visited in my life, Italy is definitely my favorite. Italy is located in southern Europe bordering countries such as France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. With a population of over sixty million people, Italy has a capitalist market with high GDP per capita and a well developed infrastructure. According to the International Monetary Fund, it is the eighth largest economy in the entire world and third biggest in Europe. After analyzing the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), the GDP of Italy expanded by 10% in the fourth quarter of last year. From 1960 2013, the GDP growth rate averaged 63% per year. Their main industrial base is driven by producing high quality consumer goods. The main sectors in Italy are tourism, iron and steel, machinery, textiles, food processing, shoes, clothing (fashion), and one of the biggest being the auto sector. Italy joined the European Union in 1952, and between then and now, their country has gone through growth rates well above 4%. However, after 1992, Italy s expansion rates fell below the European Union average. Ever since then, Italy s government has been trying to revive their economy by increasing the amount of public spending. In result, the public debt and budget deficit have attained unsustainable levels and the country has recently gone through a tough recession. Now in 2014, Italy has actually returned to growth after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Russian Ballet Dance In The 17th And 18th Century Poverty and other major problems involving constant combatant situations and invasions Russia faced in the 17th and 18th centuries led to many adaptations of performance and arts which were centered around dancing. Due to the exclusivity of proper ballet teachings from known academies many lower class Russian citizens were innovative in the creation of their own balletperformances. Unlike the higher social classes who found great significance to formality and the esteem which surrounded Russian ballet, the lower class had their own take on ballet. Lower class Russian citizens adapted ballet dances through their peers who had commonly been instructed from a handful of other interpretations of the dance. (Schmidt, 1988). Because the Russian ballet academies were selective and difficult to attend many versions of the ballet were formed based upon various interpretations of the dance. Most commonly ballet dances which were performed by those who were not receiving ballet direction from institutions were more inventive and lively than the serious demeanor of formal performances of Russian Ballet. The anxiety I felt kept me from enjoying the thanksgiving dinner. I counted and counted the days back, it had been six weeks since I last had a period. That night I drove to deliver my boyfriend thanksgiving dinner. I also intended to pick up the pregnancytest he had for me. That night when all the lights were out and my parents asleep, I quietly tiptoed to the bathroom. I was eager to know my fate. While waiting for the results to appear, my heart sunk. I felt my heart in my stomach. The test stick was ready. My heart beat rapidly, my hands trembled as I picked up the pregnancy test. I couldn t tell if it said negative or positive.... I remember my mother calling the dean, informing her I would not be returning on Monday from thanksgiving break. She lied said I was sick. My mother was reluctant to give word of my pregnancy. A few days later the pastor from my church, Pastor Larry Mays informed the school principal the real reason I would not be returning. One of the hardest things I had to do after becoming pregnant, was gathering up my belongings from school. I felt horrible as I packed up my clothes. My mom sat on the bed in my dorm room with a look of great disappointment. I didn t have a chance to say bye to any friends, I don t think I could have faced them if I did. I was so embarrassed. I had no idea what I would say. Once I was back home after picking up my belongings, my pastor helped me enroll at the high school in my town. • 27. Schools Need 21st Century Materials And Resources Schools need 21st century materials and resources to serve 21st century students. There needs to be a change in ideology regarding the function of the library in todays society. For centuries, libraries have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses. (Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet and online information libraries need to rebrand themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real time, and the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with other agencies devoted to educationand information. John Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests that, Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively with partner intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations. (2015) More agencies are partnering up to give their patrons access to the best and most credible information.

I listened to this piece, lasting fourteen minutes and forty eight seconds, through the online classical music library. This piece was composed in 1720 during the Baroque Era and exhibits many features characteristic of Baroque music, which will be analyzed later in this paper. In order to fully understand this piece a variety of information will be presented including a synopsis of Bach s life, background on the piece, a listening chart for this chaconne, the events occurring in society that impacted music and art in the Baroque Era and an analysis of the composition with reference to typical Baroque musical characteristics. In order to understand his music, it is important to overview Bach s life and the affect he had on the musical realm. The Problem Of The Infant Thinking about these events, I developed the following theory on what could have occurred that evening: At least one adult Bigfoot brought the infant to my house, creating a diversion by scratching on the front door. Then, with our attention on the front of the house, they crept around to the back of the house. The adult lifted the infant over the rail, then set it down on the deck. The infant was too small to reach the carpet without taking one step, in the snow, on the deck, thus leaving a footprint. Are companies, factories, or stores stating the truth when they claim that their food is organic or natural ? The answer is probably no, unless you really are interested in what you eat. But for the most part, a great majority of the population in this country have no idea what is in their food. Most of them probably don t even know what the definition of the word organic or natural and just assume that if foods have that labeled then they automatically are better than other food who don t claim they are. • 35. The Impact Of Historic Events On The Social Environment... identity can change over time in a society with the effects of historic events, changes in the social environment and the active participation of the people to create new social constructs and institutions. In order for nationalism to even start several prerequisites had to be met. These were the creation of a print system for books to be created. These books would spread the ideas of nationalism, the enlightenment and other philosophical movements across the world. Next is the capitalist system which would naturally seek to reach a larger audience and thus a larger profit margin which lead to the development of the vernacular print. Print in vernacular allowed for regular people to read the ideas printed in the books and understand them, which ultimately spread the ideas and values of these cognitive revolutions to the common man. These changes to written language changed its role forever. In the past, written language was reserved specifically for the political, intellectual, or religious elite. The religious elite especially relied on the control of the written word to control and influence the thoughts of the masses, and this was true for most, if not all religions across the world. A consequence of written language being used by the common people to spread the ideas of the enlightenment allowed for the dismantlement of the concept of rule by divine right. The spread of rationalism in turn encouraged the use of rational discourse amongst the common people, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As the daughter of Chinese immigrants living in the US, she was tasked with living a double life, straddling the line between her traditional Chinese upbringing and the environment outside of her home in 1960 s California. She was in many ways a perfectly normal and intelligent child. Through her writing she is able to describe complex interactions from her childhood, detailing her reasoning and understanding of the world. Despite this cleverness and flexibility, she begins her account by describing herself as voiceless, seemingly dumb, and explains how it was that she failed kindergarten. Through this story we get a view of how an intelligent young person might experience difficulties caused by cultural differences, a unique perspective from a first generation American. In this excerpt from Woman Warrior, Kingston recounts her experiences as a young person without a voice. Her struggle is deepened by the culturally engrained xenophobia and misogyny that existed in her diverse neighborhood, as well as pressures and extreme obstacles thrown at her by her own mother. The child whom Kingston describes goes through continuous growth in finding her own identity and strength in character, but it is clear that she still carries the fear and pain created by her uniquely difficult ... This story was published in the year 1973; and looking at the history of what was going on in America at that time, it is impossible to say that Ursula s writing wasn t affected by the events occurring in that time period. The first wave feminist movement was prominent during the time, just as the Vietnam war was still being fought, as well as many technological and scientific changes occurring in the world. My argument is that Ursula wrote this story to combat the utilitarian mindset that is found is so many, especially during the 1960s 1970s, and still today. By 1200, the indigenous Christian inhabitants of al Andalushad, for the most part, been forcibly converted or rooted out. The only Christians left in the area were prisoners of war, mercenaries, and merchants. To emphasize the severity of the treatment of the dhimmis by the Almohad rulers, in 1224, an Almohad chronicler, al Marrakushi, made the claim that, No pact of protection has been signed between us and the Jews or the Christians since the rise of Almohad power. Now I understand that the two of you believe that marijuana is a gateway drug but I have done excessive research and I can assure you that it is in in no shape or form a gateway drug . The gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. (Lawrence 281). She has her first experience with love at an early age, when she encounters Anton Skrebensky. At one point during their courtship, Anton comes to the wedding of Ursula s uncle, Fred, and Ursula has a very distinct experience similar to the one her mother Anna had in the cornfield. At the touch of her hand on his arm, his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a glaucous, intertwining, delicious flux and contest in flux...She turned, and saw a great white moon looking at her over the hill. And her breast opened to it, she was cleaved like a transparent jewel to its light. She stood filled with the full moon, offering herself. Her two breasts opened to make way for it, her body opened wide like a quivering anemone, a soft, dilated invitation touched by the moon. She wanted the moon to fill in to her, she wanted more, more communion with the moon, consummation. (Lawrence 316 17). In this passage, Ursula s will is dancing in a way with Skrebensky s, but it is always separate. The moon has some deeper significance for her, as it did for Anna, as it pierces the darkness, entering and becoming her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
