There were six interviews conducted in total with one participant wishing to remain anonymous. The interviews were each 30 minutes to over an hour
long. These interviews will delved deeper into the education and possible apprenticeship of ceramicists.
Participant Observation:
The participant observation portion was conducted by enrolling in a ceramics class at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) and
interacting with the pottery students and teacher. During this time, notes were kept about the way students worked together to solve problems and the
general discussions and atmosphere in the studio. During the participant observation portion I also recorded my interaction and connection to the clay.

To start off the comparison between the woman from Willendorf and Aphrodite of Melos, it's important to give a brief overview of both. The Woman
from Willendorf was a Human free–standing figurine from the upper paleolithic period(pg 6), depicting a woman with an emphasis on her womanly
traits, such as her breast and hips. She is thought to be a votive figure; which tribes would offer to another tribe as a sign of fertility and that the
other tribe wanted to mingle with their tribe. The Aphrodite of Melos was found on the Island of Milos and is from the Hellenistic period in

Ideal Beauty and the Venus of Willendorf The Venus of Willendorf is said to be the first masterpiece of world sculptures. It belongs to a series of
Venus figurines of the Paleolithic period or "Old Stone Age." This period was characterized by crude stone and bone weapons, cave paintings, and
sculptures. The Venus was found in a small village of Austria called Willendorf, hence the name of the Venus. This groundbreaking discovery was
made in 1908 by the archaeologist Josef Szombathy. However, it was not until 1990 when we were able to predict the time when the sculpture was
carved. It is believed to have been made between 25,000 B.C.E and 20,000 B.C.E. The sculpture is only 4,4 inches tall and it is made of oolitic
limestone, which is a carbonate rock commonly found in India, around the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean Islands, but not Austria. Therefore,
archeologists believe that this sculpture was moved from its original place of creation. Continuing with that idea, because of the fact that the sculpture
does not have defined feet so it is not able to stand and that it is small and malleable, historians believe that it was originally made to be carried
around as a talisman or a sign of good luck, especially for fertility purposes. It is important to notice how the structure of this sculpture highlights some

Art Vs Medieval Art
When looking at history and the art produced throughout history, it is interesting to learn how it all started and how it changed throughout the
centuries. Starting with Prehistoric art leading to the periods of Early Medieval and the Romanesque. Then when looking deeper at the art pieces
created throughout the centuries, something that stood out to me was how people were depicted and idealized. Starting with the prehistoric art period,
where there is only a few miniature sculptures that depict women and men of that time. Then when looking at the Romanesque and Medieval art
pieces, the human body is more stylized and depicted differently. When looking at these types of aspects, it makes me think about today and how
people are either admired or judged for their beauty and body image. Within this paper, I will be focusing on the major art periods that we learned
and explain how people were physically depicted and idealized, and reflect on how it is still seen today, within society and their standards.

organic forms of modernly sculpted artifacts can most likely be directly referenced to the movements of prehistoric artworks. There seems to be an
ongoing transition on how cultures no matter how stretched apart through time, contrasted by ethnicity or religious views; can all be somewhat related
to each other by the methods or principles portrayed through their artworks. In fact, I saw that very transition; within two works in which are extremely
different in meaning, craftsmanship, time, culture and so on. However, I was still able to find similarities within the artifacts. In this paper I will examine
Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic carving in limestone; which can fit in the palm of one's hand. As well as, The Sacrifice of Chacmool, which are a

bone, clay, and even stone. They represented humans, as well as animals; they even combined them at times. Most of the sculptures from this time
show a high level of skill. From this time, there were two very influential sculptures, The Venus of Willendorfand the Venus of Laussel. This paper will

Sculptures in relief are typically more detailed than those in the round. This is because some of the original material remains and forms the
background plane. Like the Willendorf, Laussel also was sculpted to have over exaggerated breasts, with large breasts and vulva. Unlike the
Willendorf, the Laussel has more detail in the rest of the body. There is still no face, but there is focus on the arms and legs as well; where with the
Willendorf, they weren't even carved into the figure at all. The Laussel is shown holding a wisent horn, or possibly a cornucopia, in one hand, which
has 13 notches. It is believed that the notches are carved to indicate the number of nights between the first crescent and full moon, signifying a
recognized relationship between a single menstrual and lunar cycle. It was painted with red ochre, like Willendorf, that was also thought to represent
the blood from child birth. She also has her hand placed on her stomach (or womb). There is a "Y" on her thigh and her faceless head is turned toward
the horn.
I was drawn to this time period as well as these two sculptures. As I researched both sculptures I was fascinated by how much respect the people of
that time had for their women. Not only for what they could do for them, but also for what they looked like. They didn't see the weight and size as a

The Venus of Willendorf is sculpted from a material called Oolitic Limestone. This limestone contains traces of Ochre which is a type of red clay,

The Figures Of The Human Figure In Hellenistic Art
The human figure is something that artists have portrayed in sculpture for thousands of years. Each culture and time period had different reasons
behind the way they chose to depict humans. In ancient Egypt, pharaohs were shown as idealized and emotionless, like gods. Yet in Hellenistic art,
people were depicted in dramatic scenes that showed them as very human and emotional. The way humans have been depicted through sculpture and
the reasons behind these canons have evolved and changed over time.
The earliest examples of the human form in sculpture can be found in the paleolithic era. While in the Paleolithic era humans were rarely depicted in
paintings, they were commonly depicted through sculpture in small figurines. The majority of these figures were female, with very few males, and
over two–hundred have been classified as "Venus figurines." These figures were almost always made with exaggerated breasts, stomach, and hips,
which is unlikely to be how women looked during this time. The proportions were symbolic and not meant to represent a real woman. This is
shown in the piece "Venus of Willendorf," a Paleolithic era sculpture. This figure is fairly small at only four inches high, and it is unable to stand up
on its own (see fig. 1). Like most sculptures around this time period, it was made to be easily carried as the paleolithic people were nomadic

Currently there are two theories as to why the Paleolithic people created the Venus de Willendorf. The first and least popular idea of her creation is
based upon her voluptuous body and abundance of overall body fat. Some see the fact that her people were hunters and gatherers fighting to survive,

Though both figures express the same body shape and emphasis on sex, they both come from very different places. Venus was found in Austria around
28,000 – 25,000 BCE, while Dolni came from the Czech Republic and dates to 29,000 – 25,000 BCE. Though their distance may be somewhat apart,
their dates fall pretty close together. In chapter three I am looking at the Palette of King Narmer. It looks to be some type of plaque with a king or
god conquering an enemy. There are many animals on the stone like birds, bulls, and cats. When I saw the images I thought it was two pieces, but
it's really one piece with both sides engraved. The sculpture is from Hierakonpolis dating from 3000 BCE and is 25 inches tall. The stone used is
known as slate. My assumption about the image was right; it's an Egyptian king standing on his enemies. You can tell he's a king by his scale and
size to others in the image. The back of the palette shows the king, Naram, with bulls and two animals each roped in by male figures with their necks
