Richard Wright s Native Son
Richard Wright s book, Native Son, is considered one of the pioneers of African American literature
within mainstream America (Ann Rayson). The book follows Bigger Thomas s journey through self
realization, while exposing the line of racism and its effects in 1930s Chicago. Yet, for an African
American narrative, the story lacks one key character, a strong woman. The women Wright includes in
his story are only there as a tool to better shape Bigger s, or another man s, character. While the lack of
any strong, female character could be based on Richard Wright s own life, his presentation of Mrs.
Thomas, Vera, Mrs. Dalton, Peggy, Mary, and Bessie all lack the characteristics required to fulfill the
strong female lead that African American literature demands. Despite of the reasoning behind
justification or condemnation for Wright s characters, when considering Wright s life it is clear that a
strong female character was missing. Past criticisms of Native Son have normalized Bigger s extreme
violence and commodification towards women, given Bigger s character. In How Bigger was Born
Wright even argues that all characters are portrayed exclusively as seen from Bigger s perspective
(Wright, xxxi). Literary critics and feminist challenge this justification based upon Wright s authority
as the author. They argue instead that If read as the negative polarity of the text, this process of male
reification and appropriation pervades the work. (France, 414). Every woman in the

John Rawls Theory of Societal Justice Essay
Have you ever wondered what would be required in order to create a just society? Let us think from
the perspective of societal ground zero. We have not been in existence for the past few thousand years.
We have no ancestors to direct us, no rules to follow, and no experience to guide us. Imagine that we
have not even come to be yet. Consider for a moment that society has yet to be established. Assume
there are hypothetical homunculi with the sole task of devising the goals, the guiding light, for society.
How would societal goals be designed so they are fair and just for all?
In what follows, I will attempt to portray the philosophy of John Rawls with regard to the theory of
societal justice. My aim is convey Rawls conception of justice. ... Show more content on

504). In other words, every person ought to have an equal system of comprehensive basic political
rights and freedoms in harmony with an equivalent system for all other people.
Rawls believes the homunculi, behind a veil of ignorance, would choose this first principle over a
utilitarian perspective mainly due to the fear of unknown consequences. From a utilitarian approach,
the homunculi know that some would end up with an unfair advantage of basic liberties, while others
would be severely and unjustly disadvantaged. This would occur as a result of the definition of
utilitarianism; to create the highest amount of utility averaged among all people in the society. Within
the greatest average utility, there are certain to be outliers who are severely disadvantaged. It would
seem only reasonable to assume the homunculi would choose the principle that guarantees equal
liberties for all over the utilitarian perspective where some would surely be disadvantaged. Since they
are behind a veil of ignorance, the homunculi would want to assure the best possible minimum.
Ensuring equal basic liberties for all would provide a far better minimum than the greatest average
utility, which would certainly leave some people with unjustly disadvantaged rights and freedoms.
Rawls second principle states, Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are

Guns Germs And Steel
In Jared Diamonds book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, he outlines the major factors that have contributed
to both European colonization, and subsequent Indigenous defeats, as well as to globalization.
Specifically, I will be expanding on the factors that contributed to Fernando Pizarro s miraculous, and
somewhat unlikely defeat of the Incan emperor Atahualpa at the battle of Cajamarca. Francisco
Pizarro s defeat of the Incan Emperor Atahualpa with only 168 Spaniards compared to an Incan army
500 times more numerous is seen historically as being a success by Diamond. This success can be
seen as being a conglomerate of different attributes rather than one single reason. To begin, the
Spanish s far superior technological advancements gave them a ... Show more content on

In his book, Technology, Disease, and Colonial Conquests, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries: Essays
Reappraising the Guns and Germs Theories, he argues that Cajamarca itself could be considered more
of a coup d etat than an actual battle. As Raudzens explains, according to the Spanish chronicler,
Garcilo de la Vega, the battle was a diplomatic conference, where the guest negotiators happened to
turn on their hosts, when they were themselves most vulnerable. To Raudzens, this battle seems to
have proven nothing about the military power of the Spanish, but rather of their nastiness over the
Incas. Another point expanded on by Rautzens is the Guns and Germs theory propagated by Diamond.
To Rautzen, the technological implications of the battle were a greater factor than that of disease, as
disease did not directly impede on the battle itself. As Garcilo de la Vega described about the battle,
the Spanish s battle tactics consisted of cannon and Gun fire, followed by a charge of 62 cavalry, and
lastly completed with armored men on foot. To Raudzen, many of these points are over dramatized in
many accounts. Both the horses, and the guns of the Spanish inhibited a large shock effect among the
Inca, but their guns could only fire once and were few. As for the horses, the majority of the fighting
was taking place in an urban setting, which limited their maneuvering ability. Also the Incas did
possess body armor, though it was not up to par with that of the Spanish s steel. He also agrees with
most scholars, (e.g. Diamond, Ibid, Hyman and Orish) in that the majority of the fighting took place
with swords. He ends by suggesting that rather than Pizarro s victory being one of a technological sort,
it was one in which was more marginal than

Ambition Vs Vanity
Philippians 2:3 4 says Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in
humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. Each of you should be
concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well. God has told us
to focus on the humility of others and not our own. These days people are devoting their lives to
unholy things and events, instead of pouring their soul into something pure and good for mankind. If
we live life egotistical and greedy, people will separate instead of coming together as one. Machiavelli
states in The prince that people who want to strive should be cunning, narcissistic and play life as a

Egoism can be spread by many things. The long for superiority can feed your ego and alter your

Lord Of The Flies And The Destructors
I am most interested with the characters in The Destructors written by a British author Graham
Greene. It focuses on a gang of adolescent boys who decide to destroy an old man s house. The
behaviors of these boys remind me of a book I read, Lord of The Flies by William Goldings, it tells
the story of a group of British school boys who are attacked on an airplane during World War II and
they crash on a deserted island. The two stories happen during and after World War II, the extreme
violence and injustice of the war has overwhelmed people at that time, horrific incidents such as the
holocaust have left people questions about religions, authorities and human nature. The Destructors
responses to these questions by suggesting

Pros And Cons Of Roman Government
The Roman government is very unique compared to other societies. The majority of societies were
either controlled by monarchy or democracy, however the Romans found a way to have both. The
Roman empire had both a senate and an emperor. The Senate was Democracy which was made up by
electing officials who although made laws couldn t finalize the law without approval from emperor.
The Emperor made up the Monarchy part having the final say in all important objectives. The Roman
Emperor was very much like our modern day president. He oversaw the senate often conducting the
meetings. Even though he conducted the Senate, he actually approved only what he deemed worth for
finalization. Some of the most famous leaders in history such as Julius Ceasar, Augsustus Ceasar, and
Nero were Emperors of Rome. The Senate and the Roman People (SPQR, or Senatus Populusque
Romanus), described the difference in class between the Senate and ordinary people. The Roman
People were all citizens who were not members of the Senate or the emperor. Power was vested in the
Roman People, through the Committee of the Hundreds , the Committee of the ... Show more content

Review Of Michael Ignatieff s A Sense Of Belonging
A Sense of Belonging Arises
Based on 2004 Question 3
Michael Ignatieff, a Practice of Human Rights Professor, observed a key characteristic in how humans
relate and bond with one another: intuition shared within groups that helps set rules and regulations,
ultimately setting them apart. His observation calls into question the connection between these
unspoken rules, and the sense of belonging felt by group members. With his observations in mind, it is
natural to assume that unspoken rules and belonging coincide because they define a group by giving
them an image and general understanding of each other.
Often it is found that having common interests affects the people within, as well as the image of, a
certain group. When people think back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider sitting in your high school with multiple different groups of people around. You hear
numerous conversations coming from every direction and laughter filling the halls, but you are left
standing in the hallway alone, feeling outcast, because you have no connection with those people.
Having desolate feelings comes in response to this situation, and overall, it takes away from that sense
of belonging. The unspoken rules present in these groups are responsible for the loss of belonging.
People that do not fit the requirements within the rules often find themselves feeling as though they
are outcasts in society. Individually, they will perceive themselves to be outsiders without a belonging
in the social order because their traits do not match the desired ones in society. Additionally, the
people in each specific group will begin to exclude the said outcasts because they do not belong in the
clique. As a result, social events and conversations become more exclusive to those who fit the
unspoken rules. This unfortunately can lead to bullying, for the exclusive people will make the
outsiders feel unwelcomed and criticized. One who does not fit in with others will find themselves
feeling insecure about their life and role in the community. Therefore, the unspoken rules of society
affect each individual s sense of belonging in both a positive and negative

Alfred Binet
Alfred Binet (July 11, 1857 October 18, 1911) was a French psychologist who invented the first
usable intelligence test, known at the time as the Binet test and today referred to as the IQ test His
principal goal was to identify students who needed special help in coping with the school curriculum.
Along with his collaborator Théodore Simon, Binet published revisions of his intelligence scale in
1908 and 1911, the last appearing just before his death. Binet was born as Alfredo Binetti in Nice, then
part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. He was the only child of a physician father and an artist mother. His
parents separated when he was young, and Binet then moved to Paris with his mother. He attended law
school, and earned his degree in 1878. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simon had nominated himself a few years before as Binet s research assistant and worked with him on
the intelligence tests that Binet is known for, which share Simon s name as well. In 1905, a new test
for measuring intelligence was introduced and simply called the Binet Simon scale. In 1908, they
revised the scale, dropping, modifying, and adding tests and also arranging them according to age
levels from three to thirteen.
In 1904 a French professional group for child psychology, La Société Libre pour l Etude
Psychologique de l Enfant, was called upon by the French government to appoint a commission on the
education of retarded children. The commission was asked to create a mechanism for identifying
students in need of alternative education. Binet, being an active member of this group, found the
impetus for the development of his mental scale.
Binet and Simon, in creating what historically is known as the Binet Simon Scale, comprised a variety
of tasks they thought were representative of typical children s abilities at various ages. This task
selection process was based on their many years of observing children in natural settings. They then
tested their measurement on a sample of fifty children, ten children per five age groups. The children
selected for their study were identified by their school teachers as being average for their age. The
purpose of this scale of normal functioning, which would later be revised twice using more stringent
standards, was to compare

St. Jude s Research Hospital
St. Jude children s Research Hospital
What is the name of your organization? What year was the agency founded?
I would like to focus on one non profit organization that has been doing very well in the recent years.
The name of the organization is St Jude Research Hospital, which deals with the cure and treatment of
children suffering from catastrophic diseases. In the five decades, it has been operational, the mortality
rate has gradually reduced therefore saving lots of lives. St Jude started its operations in 1962. Danny
Thomas was the one who started the organization and was helped by two other close friends (Pui, Pei,
Pappo, Howard, Cheng, Sandlund and Gajjar, 2012).
What was the total revenue for the current year?
The total revenue of any firm is calculated by adding the total sales of good and services in a given
period mostly one year as explained by Austin, (2002). According to St Jude children s Research
Hospital s financial statement for the year ending June 2014, the total revenue totalled to $
410,148,655. It was achieved by the addition of net patient service revenue ($ 104,014,142), research
grants and contracts ($ 93,786,845), net investment income ($ 201,569,845), net assets released from
restrictions (0) and other revenues ($ 10,778,398).
How does this compare to the previous year? Explain where the largest gain or loss was from the
previous year?
In the financial year that ended June 2013, the total revenue was lower than that of 2014. The

Complete my.blog 3.1 (45), my.blog 3.2 (36), my.blog 3.3 (53). What did you discover about your
value orientation that you did not know before? After completing my.blog 3.1, I learned several things.
The first thing is that I am individualistic, meaning that I have a tendency to emphasize my individual
identity over a group identity. The second was that I am small power distance oriented, meaning I tend
to value equal power distributions, equal rights and relations, and equitable rewards and punishments
on the basis of performance. Third, I learned that Ii have feminine patterns, meaning that I emphasize
flexible sex roles when it comes to behaviors. Finally, I learned that I have a strong uncertainty
avoidance, meaning I prefer clear procedures, and conflict, avoidance behaviors. Overall, I think this
is basically spot on. I do tend to want equal rights, and rewards/punishments based on performance,
and I do really hate conflict. After completing my.blog 3.2, I also learned even more. After adding up
my scores, I found that I am a bicultural value person. Neither my individualism score or my
collectivism score was much different. This means that in certain situations when my value of self
reliance and personal freedom is the focus I may be more individualistic, while when it comes to
being sensitive to others needs, I may be more collectivist. After completing my.blog 3.3, I also
learned that doing, or action oriented, that when it comes to density I tend to be in

Compare And Contrast The Devil Wears Prada Book And Movie
The job a million girls would die for: Novel vs. Movie
In 2006, David Frankel made a movie version of The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. The
book and the movie are both set in New York and tell the story of a girl named Andy. In both versions
Andy starts working for Miranda Priestly, editor in chief of Runway, a fashion magazine. Generally
the film version of The Devil Wears Prada, what kind of experiences Andy passes through is similar to
what Andy experiences in Weisberger s novel. However, the movie is different form the book because
some characters have a different appeal and image, Andy s love life might end up positive, and it ends
in a different way.
One difference is the appeal and image of the characters. For example, in the book Andy has blond
hair and lives with her boyfriend named Alex Fineman. Later in the story, Alex breaks up with Andy.
In contrast, Andy has brown hair in the movie. Also the boyfriend s name is Nate Cooper, instead of
Alex Fineman. Another difference in characters is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

other every week for dinner. Also yellow cabs, nice looking people from New York are well
represented in both versions.
Another similarity, the main storyline, is that Andy gets to work for Runway in which Miranda
Priestly is editor in chief. Andy got accepted due to an interview which was different form all other
girls. Miranda gives it a shot. In both versions Miranda was in the beginning very dissatisfied about
Andy. There is also a similarity in Miranda s way of communication. She refuses to share elevators
with others and dismisses everyone with a cold That s

Justin Diary Entry Analysis
Cher Journal,
Today Victor left for Ingolstadt. He just left but hours ago and I already feel the vastness of my cousin
s absence. It s hard for me to see him go for I have been within his presence for as long as I remember.
It must be hard for him to go as well, especially with the recent passing of his mother, my dear Aunt
Caroline. I feel partially responsible for her death; she caught the sickness from me. I am still so very
thankful that the sickness did not take the same hold on me as it did her. This family has never seen
the sadness we all behold now;I doubt we could take even one more. Justine has taken the event very
hard as well. She was very close to my dearest aunt and tended to her when she became sick. One look
at Justine in the past and all your sorrows would flit away but now I feel she needs the comfort. She
has been neglected over these months for the focus has been on our closest family members instead. I

us. My uncle has been patiently waiting for a response directly from Victor as well. If we do not hear
from my cousin soon, I assume Uncle will travel there to check on the wellbeing of Victor himself.
Yes, Henry is giving us details but he is always very vague about what is truly wrong with my dear
cousin. I hope the scarlet fever has not also taken hold of Victor. I do doubt that my dear friend would

The Threat Of The Islamic State
In recent years, ISIS has been breaking out everywhere instilling fear into people all around the world.
In recent events, they attacked Brussels, Istanbul and Paris killing a large amount of people. The major
thing that we have to remember is to not fear the Islamic State. They only way we can defeat them is if
we show no fear of them. Is it said to believe that many people like the Iraqi government s
discriminatory policies against Sunnis, Bashar al Assad s suppression of secular Syrian protesters,
President Bush s invasion of Iraq and the US War on Terror, President Obama s lack of leadership and
the early US withdrawal from Iraq, the Iran Arab rivalry in the region, and even the Israeli Palestinian
conflict are the reason that the Islamic State has risen against the rest of the world. All of the groups
listed above could be the cause of all this, but researchers have not effectively found the main cause
for all of this. In the next pages of this research, I m going to look further into the cause of ISIS,
researching different contributing factors and actors involved in all of this. The Islamic State is a
growing problem for everyone all around the world. This terrorist group has been growing as the years
go on. The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations defines terrorism as the unlawful use of force and
violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or

Hitler Vs Mussolini
Another significant factor of the similarities that these two leaders shared was their desire of absolute
power. After the collapse of the democratic parliament which was soon replaced by Hitler and
Mussolini s dictatorships, both leaders thought that once gained power, the parties which helped them
obtain such power would not have taken control of it and especially that they would not have
surrendered to their own parties. They were determined that the power was only theirs and one way of
showing it was by expanding their territories throughout foreign countries. In 1930 Mussolini started
growing his power in North Africa, in the Balkan peninsula and throughout the Mediterranean

He had the idea that women s only job was to have kids, cook and be dedicated to religion. For

fact that many of Hitler s principles were not comparable to Mussolini s ones. The biggest difference
between them is the fact that most Italian fascists were against racism and against Hitler s anti Semitist
ideologies. Their main concentration was towards the supremacy of the State, while the Nazi s one
was the race. The Aryans, from Hitler s point of view, represented the highest form of human race.
Whereas Jews, Africans and people who had different human identities such as homosexuals and the

only way to dominate and destroy these races was through the strength of the three myths. The first

people of different social classes and the last one called Fuhrer was a nickname given to the leader of

Appeasement was thought to be a way of keeping Germany at bay, however, it was proven to be an
ineffective policy as subsequently, war broke out in 1939. Appeasement was a major contributor to
World War 2 as it allowed Hitler to build his military power until it was strong enough to fight a world
scale war. In addition, appeasement emboldened Germany, as the allies never wanted to succumb to
yet another war. Hitler was aware that the appeasement policy was a massive compromise to Hitler,
and in someways a plead not to begin another war. Hitler used this leverage to his advantage, taking
steps that eventually led to the most devastating war of our time.

The social distress saw many protests, fights and rallies in the mid to late 30 s. An anarchist
government was also formed at one stage. Franco saw Nazi Germany as a superpower awaiting to flex

Franco empowered the nation by simmering the large divide within the country. His fascist ideology
made him come across as a nationalistic and empowering leader, much like the other two Fascist
governments residing in Europe. The Spanish Civil War of 1936 1939 was an armed conflict between
left wing Republicans and far right Fascist Nationalists, led by Francisco Franco. The Republicans

The American Colonial Life During The Late 1700 S
Whether by land or by sea, eighteenth century colonial travel was arduous, expensive, and many times
dangerous. Because of this, few people traveled very far from their homes. Transportation has changed
dramatically since the late 1700 s. It was during this time that Colonial America was budding as a new
country. This was before airplanes, which appeared in the very early stages of the 1900 s. Cars showed
up about the same time, so rewind about 200 plus years and we re back in colonial America. It wasn t
civilized like it is today. The dirt roads were bumpy, grimy, and when the rains came, they were mud
baths. So how did people during this time get around? Often, they didn t. Not many people could
afford the cost of travel back then. Daily American Colonial Life was extremely harsh for the first
settlers and colonists. They were faced with a new country, unknown territory and no friends, relatives
or neighbors to help them In those days, it was fairly expensive to travel. Because of this, generally
only government officials, merchants, and planters took the risk (Constitution Facts). Women were
supposed to stay home and look after the children while the husband went off to do business. America
was still a budding country, so there were not as many cities as there are now and they were more
spread out. If the man wanted to travel, it would require several hours, or even several days to ride on
horseback. Often the husband wouldn t return for a couple of days, and when he

personality. As the story begins, Jem s superficial idea of courage reveals his immature nature, as his
ignorance defines his judgement. At the start of the novel, Jem s idea of bravery is simply touching the
side of the Radley house, and then only because In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare. In this
instance Jem has an urge to boast about his masculinity, in the form of a perceived bravery. However,
contrary to what Jem thinks, this act of courage merely supports his innocence as he is yet to
experience the real plight of society and the true courage which comes with that. With Jem s lack of
understanding, Harper Lee criticises the traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While facing a long lasting fight with her addiction to morphine, Ms Dubose s effort to kick this habit
reveals her true fortitude during a dark time for her. Atticus is one of the only characters who
acknowledges this bravery as he tries to show Jem what real courage is. Once again Atticus attempts
to teach the Children the importance of perseverance, not the traditional, masculine and southern idea
of bravery. Lee s inclusion of Ms Dubose s courage is also critical of the stereotypes during the civil
rights movement. After being introduced as a horrible witch like figure, Ms Dubose is eventually seen
as the bravest person [Atticus] ever knew. Through her tremendous courage, Ms Dubose defies her
original stereotype as Lee attempts to picture her dying in goodness. In doing this, Lee criticises the
stereotypes of the 1950 s. Despite not directly linking to the situation of Ms Dubose, the prejudice
toward the African American society, merely based on an uneducated, common belief, is denounced as
Lee introduces her society to a women who defies her preconceived image through a tremendous

most direct competition which in this case is Milestones Bar and Grill. These two restaurants are in
competition because they target the same market and are located within one block of each other. Each
restaurant is owned by one of top restaurant companies in North America. Olive Garden is owned by
Darden Restaurants which also owns Red Lobster, Smokey Bones, Bahama Breeze, Longhorn

For those desiring the same famous Olive Garden taste at home take away meals are also available.
Although Milestone s has a very similar target market to Olive Garden it is a substantially different
restaurant. One of the biggest differences is that Milestone s has no ethnic theme to its décor or its
menu. When asked, a Milestone s server described the theme to be Classic urban fare with globally
inspired twists in an elegant but casual setting. This theme is carried out through the use of dark
woods and brass throughout the interior as well as several Asian inspired menu items. The Langley
location of Milestone s has approximately 200 seats including a 50 seat patio and 20 lounge seats
situated around the bar. Despite the smaller size Milestone s maintains an average wait of 20 minutes
with maximum waits approaching 45 minutes. This is one significant advantage over Olive Garden.
Another distinct difference between the two restaurants is that Milestone s only utilizes booth seating,
as opposed to the approximately half and half mix of tables and booths at the Olive Garden. The
increased number of booths allows for a much more private atmosphere, as it more effectively
separates the individual parties from one another. The menu offered at Milestone s has an excellent
selection of entrees as well offering breakfast items which Olive Garden does not. However the wine
list at Milestone s is not nearly as extensive in either variety of wines

Studying the Energy Industry in University
I am interested in the scientific, economical and business aspects of the energy industry, as they not
only have a big impact on our daily lives, but our future. I know that I would like to be part of this
important and growing enterprise in a way that connects science and business. I would l be happy to
study either at University, while developing my skills of the other simultaneously.
Geology is a science that fascinates me as am hugely interested in how and why Earth was formed the
way it was, and the factors involved, from the beginning to the present day. As oil and gas supplies run
out, renewable energy that can provide large amounts of power is becoming sought after, and geology
is a field that contributes hugely to the energy sector and is certainly needed for renewable energy as
well as fossil fuels. Another reason I love geology is the fact that there are so many different types:
glaciology, hydrology, meteorology etc., all of which I am keen to learn about, particularly
geochemistry as it studies at a molecular level. Likewise, the biology involved also fascinates me, as it
includes learning about how geological change affects life on earth.
However, without business management, the energy industry would not be able to operate and make
the money needed for funding valuable research that could help solve our future problems. I feel that
having good business skills gives you the ability to think strategically and make the best decisions.

Essay Comparing The Awakening And A Doll s House
The Awakening, a novel by Kate Chopin, and A Doll s House, a play by Henrik Ibsen are both works
of literature that can be facilely compared. Both works were written around the late 1800 s, a time
when men dominated the lives of women. Each story contains a woman protagonist who seeks to
understand herself better rather than continuing to conform into the standard societal stereotype of
women. Both Nora and Edna grew to feel suffocated by their husbands orders, in which they clearly
showed traits of feminism. They come to realize that there is so much more in the world and to life

Edna remains calm as she gradually distances herself from her life with her husband, Leonce

who is the epitome of defiance of conformity, while remaining unmarried and entirely devoted to her

end of the novel Edna befriends Alcée Arobin whose lifestyle amuses her and drags her into a
meaningless sexual relationship. Before Alcée it was Robert, who originally started this sexual
awakening Edna experiences, as well as the romantic part of her, a part in which her husband never

her, the unawakened people, as half humans . However, the longing to be independent becomes so
great that Edna can no longer handle it, leading it to overcome her, then finally taking her

Obesity Is Common All Over The United States Society Today
There are a variety of public issues in the United States society today. Many people are facing some
type of illness or disease, one we do not consider a major problem until just recently. Obesity is a
disease/condition that many people in America are suffering from. Really obesity can be defined in

genetics, social and economic issues, and one of the most important is they way a person s family

Professionalism, Integrity, Honesty, And Professionalism
Introduction/Purpose/Objective Professionalism in nursing provides an important framework for the
continual development and advancement in the nursing profession. As healthcare providers, nurses are
held to high standards of practice for providing safe, effective, evidence based care to clients. As the
healthcare system continuously advances, the level of professionalism becomes crucially imperative to
nurses and other professionals. Throughout the years nursing has continuously been regarded as one of
the most trusted professions. As a result of this significant rating, it s important for nurses to maintain
integrity and honesty while upholding the core values of their respective institutions to provide safe
and effective patient centered care (Olshansky, 2011, p. 193). As healthcare professionals, nurses must
strive to incorporate humanistic qualities such as integrity, honesty and compassion into their
respective field of practice. When nurses exhibit a sense of openness and trust into their patient care,
clients can have a sense of assurance that they re in safe hands, gaining the client s trust paves the way
for the client to trust their nurse as an advocate who has their best interest. Nurses act as advocates for
their clients, and therefore, have a responsibility to voice their concerns when it comes to providing
quality care to their clients. Patient advocacy stems from the fact that they may need extra support in

Meaning Of Cockney Rhyming Slang
Language self evident though it may appear, the term can signify an astonishing variety of interrelated
concepts; one may perceive language as a means of communication, while others may see it as a
medium for thought or a catalyst for social relations. Notwithstanding, the following article shall focus
on language, or to be more explicit, its basic components, namely words, as the carriers of the speaker
s emotions. Due to the fact that emotionally laden units, such as maledictions, constitute an evergreen
source of controversy, they tend to be supplanted by miscellaneous alternative expressions; hence, the

Defining Slang
Before we embark on a detailed study concerning Cockney Rhyming Slang (henceforth CRS), we
shall endeavor to define the relevant superordinate term, namely slang. Innocuous as it may seem at
first sight, the term was initially perceived as a corruption of language, as evidenced by the
preliminary data provided by OED, according to which [slang is] the special vocabulary used by any
set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type. The following
meaning, which apparently originated in the 18th century among organized criminals (Ayto 2005),
was soon extended to still fairly unfavorable sense of a language of a highly colloquial type,
considered as below the level of standard educated speech [...]. Nonetheless, after the mid eighteenth
century, the concept in question has gradually started to shed the pejorative patina (Mattiello 2008);
therefore, currently many or perhaps most lexicographic works provide rather neutrally hued
definitions of slang. As an illustration, let us now

A Comparison Of Bell Jar And Duncan In The Way
Life is like a game of Russian roulette, a lot of it involves luck. Nobody can t know what s going to

anybody has been through, these things shape them, they make them who they are. There s a point in
life which arguably is the most important in turning them into the person they are, these are the
teenage years. Everything can be great until then, but life throws a curveball and now it seems like
everything has turned against them. Some people get through this, becoming a better person in the

a terrible lesson to teach kids, and sadly that s the way most are taught. Once the kids become
teenagers and approach adulthood they re hit with the realization that crying won t fix everything.
Duncan, like most others and sometimes myself, combat this via silence. Instead of talking out
Duncan would avoid the problems that he faced instead of dealing with them head on. Owen had
jokingly told Duncan, I m afraid I m gonna have to ask you to leave. [...] I m getting complaints. You

The International sphere has decided to take action against Syria. With regards to the ties between
South Africa and Syria as well as the wider Middle East region, it is necessary to determine what
South Africa s national interests are in order to decide on it s foreign policy
Objectives
The objective of this paper is to decide upon which action is best to pursue against Syria in terms of
South Africa s national interests as well as in the interests of economic and political links between
South Africa and the Middle East. In accordance, any action should respect and preserve the
sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, be devoid of any intimidation and be free of interference
by outside parties. As an active member of the United Nations Security Council, the decided action
should also uphold the principles and standards of the United Nations charter.
Before such action is decided upon, it is important to identify the main actors in the international
realm. The United Nations have been in the process of discussions on the Syrian Situation since May

  • 2. Richard Wright s Native Son Richard Wright s book, Native Son, is considered one of the pioneers of African American literature within mainstream America (Ann Rayson). The book follows Bigger Thomas s journey through self realization, while exposing the line of racism and its effects in 1930s Chicago. Yet, for an African American narrative, the story lacks one key character, a strong woman. The women Wright includes in his story are only there as a tool to better shape Bigger s, or another man s, character. While the lack of any strong, female character could be based on Richard Wright s own life, his presentation of Mrs. Thomas, Vera, Mrs. Dalton, Peggy, Mary, and Bessie all lack the characteristics required to fulfill the strong female lead that African American literature demands. Despite of the reasoning behind justification or condemnation for Wright s characters, when considering Wright s life it is clear that a strong female character was missing. Past criticisms of Native Son have normalized Bigger s extreme violence and commodification towards women, given Bigger s character. In How Bigger was Born Wright even argues that all characters are portrayed exclusively as seen from Bigger s perspective (Wright, xxxi). Literary critics and feminist challenge this justification based upon Wright s authority as the author. They argue instead that If read as the negative polarity of the text, this process of male reification and appropriation pervades the work. (France, 414). Every woman in the ... • 3. John Rawls Theory of Societal Justice Essay Have you ever wondered what would be required in order to create a just society? Let us think from the perspective of societal ground zero. We have not been in existence for the past few thousand years. We have no ancestors to direct us, no rules to follow, and no experience to guide us. Imagine that we have not even come to be yet. Consider for a moment that society has yet to be established. Assume there are hypothetical homunculi with the sole task of devising the goals, the guiding light, for society. How would societal goals be designed so they are fair and just for all? In what follows, I will attempt to portray the philosophy of John Rawls with regard to the theory of societal justice. My aim is convey Rawls conception of justice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 504). In other words, every person ought to have an equal system of comprehensive basic political rights and freedoms in harmony with an equivalent system for all other people. Rawls believes the homunculi, behind a veil of ignorance, would choose this first principle over a utilitarian perspective mainly due to the fear of unknown consequences. From a utilitarian approach, the homunculi know that some would end up with an unfair advantage of basic liberties, while others would be severely and unjustly disadvantaged. This would occur as a result of the definition of utilitarianism; to create the highest amount of utility averaged among all people in the society. Within the greatest average utility, there are certain to be outliers who are severely disadvantaged. It would seem only reasonable to assume the homunculi would choose the principle that guarantees equal liberties for all over the utilitarian perspective where some would surely be disadvantaged. Since they are behind a veil of ignorance, the homunculi would want to assure the best possible minimum. Ensuring equal basic liberties for all would provide a far better minimum than the greatest average utility, which would certainly leave some people with unjustly disadvantaged rights and freedoms. Rawls second principle states, Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both (a) reasonably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Guns Germs And Steel In Jared Diamonds book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, he outlines the major factors that have contributed to both European colonization, and subsequent Indigenous defeats, as well as to globalization. Specifically, I will be expanding on the factors that contributed to Fernando Pizarro s miraculous, and somewhat unlikely defeat of the Incan emperor Atahualpa at the battle of Cajamarca. Francisco Pizarro s defeat of the Incan Emperor Atahualpa with only 168 Spaniards compared to an Incan army 500 times more numerous is seen historically as being a success by Diamond. This success can be seen as being a conglomerate of different attributes rather than one single reason. To begin, the Spanish s far superior technological advancements gave them a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his book, Technology, Disease, and Colonial Conquests, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries: Essays Reappraising the Guns and Germs Theories, he argues that Cajamarca itself could be considered more of a coup d etat than an actual battle. As Raudzens explains, according to the Spanish chronicler, Garcilo de la Vega, the battle was a diplomatic conference, where the guest negotiators happened to turn on their hosts, when they were themselves most vulnerable. To Raudzens, this battle seems to have proven nothing about the military power of the Spanish, but rather of their nastiness over the Incas. Another point expanded on by Rautzens is the Guns and Germs theory propagated by Diamond. To Rautzen, the technological implications of the battle were a greater factor than that of disease, as disease did not directly impede on the battle itself. As Garcilo de la Vega described about the battle, the Spanish s battle tactics consisted of cannon and Gun fire, followed by a charge of 62 cavalry, and lastly completed with armored men on foot. To Raudzen, many of these points are over dramatized in many accounts. Both the horses, and the guns of the Spanish inhibited a large shock effect among the Inca, but their guns could only fire once and were few. As for the horses, the majority of the fighting was taking place in an urban setting, which limited their maneuvering ability. Also the Incas did possess body armor, though it was not up to par with that of the Spanish s steel. He also agrees with most scholars, (e.g. Diamond, Ibid, Hyman and Orish) in that the majority of the fighting took place with swords. He ends by suggesting that rather than Pizarro s victory being one of a technological sort, it was one in which was more marginal than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ambition Vs Vanity Philippians 2:3 4 says Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well. God has told us to focus on the humility of others and not our own. These days people are devoting their lives to unholy things and events, instead of pouring their soul into something pure and good for mankind. • 7. Pros And Cons Of Roman Government The Roman government is very unique compared to other societies. The majority of societies were either controlled by monarchy or democracy, however the Romans found a way to have both. The Roman empire had both a senate and an emperor. The Senate was Democracy which was made up by electing officials who although made laws couldn t finalize the law without approval from emperor. The Emperor made up the Monarchy part having the final say in all important objectives. The Roman Emperor was very much like our modern day president. He oversaw the senate often conducting the meetings. Even though he conducted the Senate, he actually approved only what he deemed worth for finalization. Some of the most famous leaders in history such as Julius Ceasar, Augsustus Ceasar, and Nero were Emperors of Rome. The Senate and the Roman People (SPQR, or Senatus Populusque Romanus), described the difference in class between the Senate and ordinary people. Review Of Michael Ignatieff s A Sense Of Belonging A Sense of Belonging Arises Based on 2004 Question 3 Michael Ignatieff, a Practice of Human Rights Professor, observed a key characteristic in how humans relate and bond with one another: intuition shared within groups that helps set rules and regulations, ultimately setting them apart. His observation calls into question the connection between these unspoken rules, and the sense of belonging felt by group members. With his observations in mind, it is natural to assume that unspoken rules and belonging coincide because they define a group by giving them an image and general understanding of each other. Often it is found that having common interests affects the people within, as well as the image of, a certain group. When people think back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider sitting in your high school with multiple different groups of people around. You hear numerous conversations coming from every direction and laughter filling the halls, but you are left standing in the hallway alone, feeling outcast, because you have no connection with those people. Having desolate feelings comes in response to this situation, and overall, it takes away from that sense of belonging. The unspoken rules present in these groups are responsible for the loss of belonging. People that do not fit the requirements within the rules often find themselves feeling as though they are outcasts in society. Individually, they will perceive themselves to be outsiders without a belonging in the social order because their traits do not match the desired ones in society. Additionally, the people in each specific group will begin to exclude the said outcasts because they do not belong in the clique. As a result, social events and conversations become more exclusive to those who fit the unspoken rules. This unfortunately can lead to bullying, for the exclusive people will make the outsiders feel unwelcomed and criticized. Alfred Binet Alfred Binet (July 11, 1857 October 18, 1911) was a French psychologist who invented the first usable intelligence test, known at the time as the Binet test and today referred to as the IQ test His principal goal was to identify students who needed special help in coping with the school curriculum. Along with his collaborator Théodore Simon, Binet published revisions of his intelligence scale in 1908 and 1911, the last appearing just before his death. Binet was born as Alfredo Binetti in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. He was the only child of a physician father and an artist mother. Simon had nominated himself a few years before as Binet s research assistant and worked with him on the intelligence tests that Binet is known for, which share Simon s name as well. In 1905, a new test for measuring intelligence was introduced and simply called the Binet Simon scale. In 1908, they revised the scale, dropping, modifying, and adding tests and also arranging them according to age levels from three to thirteen. In 1904 a French professional group for child psychology, La Société Libre pour l Etude Psychologique de l Enfant, was called upon by the French government to appoint a commission on the education of retarded children. The commission was asked to create a mechanism for identifying students in need of alternative education. Binet, being an active member of this group, found the impetus for the development of his mental scale. Binet and Simon, in creating what historically is known as the Binet Simon Scale, comprised a variety of tasks they thought were representative of typical children s abilities at various ages. This task selection process was based on their many years of observing children in natural settings. They then tested their measurement on a sample of fifty children, ten children per five age groups. The children selected for their study were identified by their school teachers as being average for their age. The first thing is that I am individualistic, meaning that I have a tendency to emphasize my individual identity over a group identity. The second was that I am small power distance oriented, meaning I tend to value equal power distributions, equal rights and relations, and equitable rewards and punishments on the basis of performance. Third, I learned that Ii have feminine patterns, meaning that I emphasize flexible sex roles when it comes to behaviors. The increased number of booths allows for a much more private atmosphere, as it more effectively separates the individual parties from one another. The menu offered at Milestone s has an excellent selection of entrees as well offering breakfast items which Olive Garden does not. Studying the Energy Industry in University I am interested in the scientific, economical and business aspects of the energy industry, as they not only have a big impact on our daily lives, but our future. I know that I would like to be part of this important and growing enterprise in a way that connects science and business. I would l be happy to study either at University, while developing my skills of the other simultaneously. Geology is a science that fascinates me as am hugely interested in how and why Earth was formed the way it was, and the factors involved, from the beginning to the present day. As oil and gas supplies run out, renewable energy that can provide large amounts of power is becoming sought after, and geology is a field that contributes hugely to the energy sector and is certainly needed for renewable energy as well as fossil fuels. Another reason I love geology is the fact that there are so many different types: glaciology, hydrology, meteorology etc., all of which I am keen to learn about, particularly geochemistry as it studies at a molecular level. Likewise, the biology involved also fascinates me, as it includes learning about how geological change affects life on earth. However, without business management, the energy industry would not be able to operate and make the money needed for funding valuable research that could help solve our future problems. • 28. Essay Comparing The Awakening And A Doll s House The Awakening, a novel by Kate Chopin, and A Doll s House, a play by Henrik Ibsen are both works of literature that can be facilely compared. Both works were written around the late 1800 s, a time when men dominated the lives of women. Each story contains a woman protagonist who seeks to understand herself better rather than continuing to conform into the standard societal stereotype of women. Both Nora and Edna grew to feel suffocated by their husbands orders, in which they clearly showed traits of feminism. They come to realize that there is so much more in the world and to life than they are experiencing and crave to reach their full potential. For a while Edna Pontellier conforms by remaining with her husband, taking care of home and children, and keeping her relationship with Robert quiet throughout the novel. We can clearly see an inward battle between romance, passion, confusion, and unrealized raw emotions while the outlying Edna remains calm as she gradually distances herself from her life with her husband, Leonce Pontellier. Concurrently, she surrounds herself with independent foils, such as Mademoiselle Reisz, who is the epitome of defiance of conformity, while remaining unmarried and entirely devoted to her music. This type of lifestyle was completely unheard of and viewed as taboo for women. Towards the end of the novel Edna befriends Alcée Arobin whose lifestyle amuses her and drags her into a meaningless sexual relationship. Before Alcée it was Robert, who originally started this sexual awakening Edna experiences, as well as the romantic part of her, a part in which her husband never knew. Throughout the book the sea is constantly referenced, which represents the independent life calling out to Edna. Her awakening begins and ends by the ocean. Edna also identifies those around her, the unawakened people, as half humans . However, the longing to be independent becomes so great that Edna can no longer handle it, leading it to overcome her, then finally taking her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
