2. THE BIG PICTURE
When beginning to plan for our music video, we thought that a good idea would be to base our decisions on
the feedback we received from our first questionnaire. However, taking what we got back from this was
helpful when creating our music video as we knew what age range to base it around (15-20) and also knew
what gender would prefer this specific type of style such as females.
One way in which our target audience influenced our work was our choice of mise en scene costume’s.
During our questionnaire, we asked people what their favourite retail shop would be. This was mainly
focused on feminine shops because we already knew that our music video was going to appeal to female
audiences mostly. The majority of people voted for Misguided which is a popular clothing brand around
many continents. The clothing from here is particularly stylish, colourful, and casual and their style is very
outgoing and involves bright colours and interesting materials such as sparkly mesh tops. This was
beneficial to us because we needed a lot of festival-like clothes within our music video as this was the theme
of the song.
This influenced us as a group as we decided to maintain a nice, pretty, unique representation as we put on
clothes which were fashionable. This also resulted in being a good role model for the younger generation of
females as it would of directed them to dress in a more appropriate way. This also presented respect for
women as in normal conventions, the girl is known to be dressed in a seductive way with very little on but
we have contrasted this as a group because we have represented women in a diverse light exposing them
to be more sophisticated. Overall, myself and Naomi went against the typical convention of seductive
clothing as we wanted to portray women in a positive outlook.
3. THE BIG PICTURE
Another question we asked was what type of music people liked to listen to, as
you can see, nearly everyone put hip-hop down as their favourite music choice as
this is a very popular genre within the music industry. This tells us that the mass of
people listen to pop music and there is proof of this because the top charts are
mainly full of pop music. This helped us when deciding our chosen song as this
song was identified in the chart music playlist as this is an up-beat song portrayed
with a feel good atmosphere.
We also asked what people preferred to watch in a music video. We had a range
of answers for this one but most people said that they preferred storytelling or
more choreographed performances. Both of these types are very effective to
watch depending whether it’s an emotional story-line or whether it has been
choreographed effectively matching the rhythm of the song. This certain feedback
also helped when creating our music video because we wanted to include the
things that people enjoy to watch, so therefore we decided to add in a
choreographed dance. Thankfully I am a dancer so I was able to choreograph an
effective routine with the help of a friend whom is also a dancer.
4. PLANNING
When planning everything for our music video, we wanted to do some investigating into what our target audience would be
appealed to. To do this, we individually created a target audience mood board featuring famous artists such as Little Mix, Ariana
Grande, Justin Bieber, and Rihanna. These are all influential as they all come under the genre of pop music which gave us
some insight of what genre our target audience preferred as these familiar artists are all large representatives of the pop music
genre. Me and my group decided to stick with the song, “Came Here for Love” which was originally in our initial ideas because
we thought that this was best suited for the dance we will be choreographing as we wanted to aim to do a commercial/street type
of dance. We thought that this was an upbeat and colourful song which would attract younger audiences because the mood
represented within this is a happy mood filled with bright colours and scenery’s which is influential to the younger generation as
we want to experience the world and all of these colourful places. This helped when planning our locations because we knew
that we needed to go somewhere bright, colourful, and adventurous.
Moreover, we used a variety of ideas from our initial ideas including our costume planning. We initially said that we would have
around 2 to 3 costume changes which we achieved successfully as we wanted to show a vary of outfits to mix it up a notch. For
our choreographed dance section, we decided on a mesh top with a bralette and black leggings to complete the outfit. This was
edgy and simplistic and slightly went with the conventions of looking seductive as the colour black portrays power and the style
of mesh is fairly sexy giving a sense of enigma and confidence.
We also thought that by using projections and gel lighting that this would be a good representation towards a pop music genre
because we are projecting different formats of light onto us giving background colour which was making us stand out against the
bright colours, creating excitement and attracting female audiences. This has been successfully portrayed in our storyboard as
myself and Naomi were both lip syncing in front of these projections making it more interesting to watch. We have also included
a variety of different projections so that this was not repetitive all the way through, we wanted to break this up a bit with diverse
colours and backdrops. From our feedback, we also realized that typical music videos that involve girl groups can contain
bloopers, bright colours and fashionable outfits which shows that females are more creative and do not show deep emotion
within their music videos whereas male artists like to show deep emotion throughout their music videos, being more literal.
5. FILMING AND EDITING
When in the filming process, we began with filming in the location of Dreamland situated in Margate. This was fairly successful
as we used one shot from that day to introduce our music video which was in front of the coloured box full of abstract shapes.
However, when we began editing our footage, we realized that we had filmed most of it in a portrait format which was very
unprofessional as you could clearly see the black outlines on either side where the footage hadn’t fit the screen.
Throughout our filming and editing, me and my group were able to target our audience for our age range (15-20). To show this,
we have revealed a variety of diverse projections including the use of the gel acrylics in some of our camera shots. This allowed
a further interesting approach to the camerawork, and as well as this, people in our age range have said that they would like to
see a lot of bright colours within the music video as this would match the theme of the song. This is very helpful feedback
because they are included within the age range that we have permitted, which is effective as their input will help us access a
higher grade. However, another editing technique we have used is interesting camerawork. What I mean by this is that we have
accessed higher techniques by using mirrored effects and diverse transitions which stand out to the viewers as it makes the
video as a whole flow in a better proportion. When speaking to our target audience, they suggested that we try and use different
types of shots instead of just the usual, they thought this would add to the concept of it flowing better and that it would create a
variety making our video more fun and creative. This allowed us to experiment with different techniques which was effective as it
was attention-grabbing towards the viewers. We used a lot of mid shots as we wanted the audience to feel like they was
engaging with us, enabling them to see our facial expressions clearly and we also used a fair lot of panning within our video as
we thought this looked quite effective especially showing the viewers a wider range during the shot.
However, we also asked people in our class if fast motion shots would be effective, they said yes to this as the beat of our song
is fairly fast so some of the shots being edited to fast motion would be effective as it shows that we have developed our
technique and also adds a professional twist to this as there is a variety of editing being used expanding our knowledge. This is
included in Andrew Goodwin’s theory as he believed that the technical aspect holds the video together and also believes that
lighting and colour helps to set the mood for the music video and also created emphasis on important sections of the song to
create a dramatic effect and engage the viewers.
6. FEEDBACK
As you can see, we have uploaded our
completed music video to YouTube where we
have achieved 387 views alongside with 7 likes.
YouTube is a website where you can watch
videos for free which means that it was a good
way to generate feedback as anyone has the
right to use it. However, this let us know how
successful our completed
music video was and whether it looked professional enough. Within 2 weeks of uploading our video, we
aimed to achieve 387 views and 7 likes which I have previously stated. This is good going considering we
have no relation to the music industry whatsoever. This enabled a lot of different people to view this video
who were unknown to us which is always worthy as letting someone view your work that you do not know is
always going to be 100% honest about what they are watching and whether it was successful enough in their
eyes. As you can see, someone has left us some positive feedback telling us that we included really good
cinematography, editing, lighting, lip syncing, special effects, and use of locations etc. They have commented
on every single element in a positive light showing that we have worked hard to tick all of the boxes. As you
can see, they have understood our music interpretation which shows that we have represented the pop genre
within the correct conventions which also represents that we have created a good flow from start to finish.
Another important element they have positively commented on is the special effects which has been
successful because it shows that we have used a wide range of techniques, also showing that we have
experimented with diverse effects.
