Andrew Goodwin’s Music theories Andrew Goodwin’s theories about music video’s show how we can identify different genre’s of music and different genders in music videos’ Some of Andrew Goodwin’s theories relate to the music, the lyrics the visuals and treatment of genders within the music video. We can use some of Goodwin's theories to help create our music videos and we can also challenge them to create something which contradicts the theories. The videos in this Presenation show how music video’s prove Andrew Goodwin’s theories.
- 3. MOTIFS Motifs are used in music videos to enhance the lyrics or visuals, they can also be used to create a theme for a song. Cole’s ‘fight for this love’ Cheryl shows clearly one example of motifs that enhance the lyrics. The song has key words like ‘fight’ ‘Love’ This is shown through the red strip which runs across each layer. This creates a theme for the music video. My group and I could use a motif to enhance our lyrics and Ushers ‘Love in this club’ has a similar visuals in our music video. motif with the flash of light across each layer, however the light does not enhance the lyrics. The light creates a mood for the music video and also sets the location as the music video is set in the club. The light is used to trigger target audience experience as the target audience for RD (ruff Diamondz)teens whome’ this artist/song are ‘Do it like would regularly go to the club and experience has the same kind of motif with the similar things. light flashing across the screen. The light is blue which matches the meaning of the lyrics as they imply
- 4. CAMERA ANGLES The camera angles are important in Music videos. They are used to establish the location. To present the band or to single out important elements of the video through close up. One of Goodwin’s theories is that every music video must have close ups. Here in Beyonce’s single ladies there are minimal camera angle however the video includes Zoom’s and 360 camera techniques. Although the video doesn’t include many camera angles the camera does zoom into a close up where we see the artists hand across her face. This is appropriate as the song is about putting a ring on a finger. Therefore the close up amplified the lyrics. The close up here is used to enhance the lyric. When the artists says ‘Stop’ we get a close up of her closing her fist which implies that she is stopping or ending something. This shows Goodwins theory clearly of how close up’s in music videos are needed to enhance the lyrics and possibly the music as well.
- 5. MUSIC AND VISUALS Here in Lilly Allen’s ‘smile’ the music completely contradicts the visuals. The music has an upbeat reggae melody which creates a happy tone however the visuals all show something sad/bad happening to either the artist or the male performing in the video. This also proves Goodwin’s theory that Music can contradict/ amplify or illustrate.
