Evaluation Task 1 - Analyzing How Our Media Product Develops Conventions
1. Evaluation Task 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. A shot that shows a link between
lyrics and/ or music and visuals.
In our media text we have used a
visual element of a girl portrays the
artist who sings along to the words.
The song and the girl mouthing the
words are synced to make it look like
she is singing.
Other videos such as “Stay Here” by
Atlantic Shore use the singer
mouthing the words with music
played over there video which
inspired us to use the technique for
our video.
3. A shot that typifies the way record Company would
want their artist represented.
We have tried to give our artist an indie feel
and tone which is why we based the video
on the boy looking for the artist instead of
the artist herself. we did this to challenge
the conventions of mainstream media to
give the indie genre feel.
We also chose the clothes he is wearing
because they are casual and not glamorous
or over the top like most mainstream artists.
In this video by Aquilo the artist is wearing
casual clothes and is doing everyday things
that anyone can do such as skimming a
rock. This shows him as an average person
which is good because then the ordinance
can relate to him.
4. A shot that illustrates how your video uses
music genre.
Our video use the theme of nature
to create an aesthetically please
relation to the indie genre. This
use of nature in our video allows us
to appreciate the beauty around us
that is a symbol of indie music
videos.
Nature is also a big part of the
video “Down by the river” by Milky
Chance which use a forest to
create the atmosphere and indie
feel for their video.
5. A shot that shows an intertextual reference.
Nature is a big theme in our products and
links them together by the sight of water as
all our products contain an aspect related
to water such as this image of the river
which is the same river that the sleeping
swans were photographed. We also used
light beams like this shining through the
water on our digipak cover.
Other videos use intertextual references to
other media texts, such as “Bat Country” by
Avenged SevenFold who have created a song
about the film “Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas.”
6. A shot that demonstrates your use of
camera.
We have used lots of different shots such as
close us and establishing shots to get our
desired framing of our video. We opened our
music video with a slow panning shot of the
river with the sun over head which created
some amazing lens flares to set the feel for
the rest of the video.
We used long slow shots when the music was
playing at slow pace and we then picked up
the pace of the shots as the music picked up.
The song “Olympic Airways” by the Foals uses
camera shots a lot like ours as they start out
with long panning and tilting shots and pick up
the pace of shots along with the music.
7. A shot that demonstrates your use of
lighting.
Lighting was a big factor in our video and also a
big problem as blue skies in the UK are a rare
occurrence this meant that we had a limited time
line if we wanted to get our shots using natural
light. We also used touches and lights to brighten
up our pictures of the night time shot which we
had to film at dusk so the shot would be to dark.
The blue skies allowed us to experiment with lens
flares from shots with the sun in them we also
used sparklers to create a similar effect in the
night shots.
The video “Flash Junk Mind” by Milky Chance use
similar techniques to get lens flares which
inspired us to try it for our video to give the same
warm feeling.
8. A shot that demonstrates your use of mise-
en-scene.
Our main focus of mise-en-scene was nature as it
plays a big part in most indie music videos.
We have set up tree stumps to work as a camp fire
look that we used for our party scene in the video.
We also dressed the caricatures in the same style of
clothing as our main character to create the indie
look. You can aso see the leather jacket that the girl
is wear in the picture that is an important prop in the
video as it is used for the main character to
remember the artist.
We have used the style of social gatherings from
“Flash Junk Mind” by Milky Chance as we liked how
natural and relaxed the scene feels.
9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which
shows you have watched other music videos.
We decided to use props such as
sparklers because we liked the look of
and atmosphere that items such as
powder paint, balloons and flares
created in music videos.
One of the videos we that gave us this
idea to use sparklers was “Down By The
River” by Milky Chance. We felt like we
should put our own twist on the idea and
decided to go with sparklers instead of
the other items to create some
originality in our product.
10. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which
shows you have watched other music videos.
A lot of music videos use the theme of
forbidden love as it is used across all
genres. We have created our love
story on a different line where the girl
may or may not be apart of the
moment at all.
We were inspired to create our video
this way by the video for “You There”
by Aquilo as they feature two
characters who are both together and
not as we see the girl slowly fade
throughout the video.
