The Dabbawala system started in 1880 in Mumbai, India when a Paris banker employed someone to deliver home-cooked meals to his work site. Other colleagues soon utilized the service as well, establishing what is now a 5000+ person operation that delivers over 200,000 tiffin boxes (dabbas) daily across 60-70 km, taking 5-6 hours to complete the process with a high level of accuracy. The largely illiterate workforce earns between 5000-6000 rupees per month facilitating the reliable delivery of meals to office workers across Mumbai.
