NON
OD0NTOGENIC
CYST
Amit Bharti
definition
Cyst which are not related to the
odontogenic apparatus
Grouped under
Developmental non odontogenic
cyst [all cyst are true cyst[]
Inflammatory non odontogenic cyst
[few pseudo cyst]
Inflammatory non odontogenic cyst
They are lined by epithelium derived from odontogenic epithelium associated with tooth
development
.salivary cysts
Mucous extravasation cyst
Ranula
Mucous retention cyst
MUCOCELE
-cystic lesion develop in salivary gland called
mucocele
These lesion develop in mostly minor salivary
gland and rarely major salivary gland
Mucocele are two type
Mucous extravasation cyst
-mucous retention cyst
Mucous extravasation phenomena
-Also called mucous escape phenomena
-mucous extravasation phenomena are common oral lession
caused by traumatic rupture of minor salivary gland
duct, release of mucous into adjacent connective tissue
Etiology
Are common oral lesion caused by traumatic rupture of minor salivary
gland duct, causing release of mucous into adjacent connective tissue.
Cause;
Biting of lip and cheek
Pinching of lip by extraction forceps
Clinical feature -most common in first three decades of life
Male and female equally affected
Lower lip is most affected area
Buccal mucosa>floor of mouth>ventral tongue>palate
Mucocele of upper lip are uncommon
Superficial mass show blueish translucent appearance
Deep mass show appear as a soft fluctuant submucosal
nodules with normal mucosa colour
histopathology
- Circumscribed cavity with in a connective tissue
- Distended epithelium
- Mucin is walled off by a rim of granulation tissue
- Cavity is not lined by epithelium – false cyst
- Mucin appears basophilic
- Numerous amount of inflammatory cell neutrophils forms of histocytes
- The duct which supply scretion to the cavity called feeder duct
TREATMENT
Excision with removal
of associated minor
salivary glands to
minimize the chance
of reccurence.
Avoid injury to other
glands during primary
wound closure
MUCUS
RETENTION CYST
are also called retention
phenomena/retention
mucocele
- Swelling caused by an
obstruction of a salivary
gland causes retension
of saliva within the duct
and ductal dilation
without repture
ETIOLOGY
Mucous retention cyst develop partial and totally obstruction of minor salivary duct by
salivary calculus an rarely major salivary gland which lead to accumalation of saliva
within gland /within the duct
More fluid accumalation cause the increse the pressure in gland itself in duct which
cause the swelling
CLINICAL FEATURE
- Major salivary gland – parotid is most commonly involved
- Floor of the mouth >buccal mucosa >lower lip
- Clinically mucocele and mucus retention cyst are indistinguisable
- Common in adult and old age
- Painless cystic, fluctuant and superficial
HISTOPATHOLOGY
H/F
- Mucous retension cyst histologically present in small cystic cavity
which is filled by mucous and lined by flatted cuboidal and columnar
epithelium cell of salivary gland duct
TREATMENT
Simple
excision
Recurrence
is rare
MUCOUS EXTRAVASATION CYST
- Extravasation cyst due to repture of
salivary gland duct
- Due to spillage of saliva in the connective
tissue
- More among the children
- It has a false cyst
MUCOUS RETENSION CYST
- Mucous retension cyst due to obtruction to
the duct in minor salivary gland
- It result accumation of saliva in either in
glad and duct.
- Mucous retension cyst most common
in adult
- Mucous retension cyst are true cyst.
