Snow Piercer Analysis
Snow Piercer was directed by Bong Joon ho in 2013, which is based on the French novel Le
Transperceneige. At first glance, most people will not understand the many themes that this particular
film has. After carefully examining the film the viewers may find the hidden themes in the film that
will be explained in this analysis. Themes that will discuss are humanity, revolt, and master of your
fate. There are many sub themes within the film but this particular analysis, it is the crucial focus on
these themes because it helps develop the central plot and conflict with in the film. The first theme
that will discuss is humanity. The whole plot of the movie focuses on preserving humanity or what s
left of it. After global warming had destroyed the earth and making unsuitable for any living creature
to survive the Conductor train made that makes an around trip cross the earth to try to preserve
humanity. Even though he was ridiculed about his theories and his plan to save humanity he still went
ahead with plans and end up saving what was left of humanity. Throughout the movie, many of the
characters humanity was tested. Even though the Conductor saved humanity he sectioned off the train
by class. The lower class was placed in the last cart of the train. They were treated horribly and were
supplied with the basic necessity of living. Since the lower class did not have the basic necessity of
living their humanity was questioned every day. Later in the film the protagonist in the

Scopes Monkey Trial Summary
The Scopes Trial: A Brief History with Documents by Jeffrey P. Moran is a book that details the
significant events that transpired in the Scopes Trial on 1925. The book, in part II, highlights eight
days of the proceedings in regards to the Scopes Trial that occurred from July 10, 1925 to July 21,
1925. Furthermore, a couple of newspapers relating to the proceedings were scattered across as well.
In part III, a plethora of documents, cartoons, and newspapers are showcased extensively pertaining to
the Scopes Trial. Three documents that have stood out were Who Shall Control Our Schools? by
William Jennings Bryan and Tennessee Can Dictate Curriculum, Not Answers by R.S. Woodworth.

Therefore, the teacher would be under an employer, the person who is paying the salary or wage to the

the teacher from performing a considerate amount of actions. Some examples could be suing the

[Scopes] has no right to misrepresent; as an employee, he is compelled to act under the direction of his
employers and has no right to defy instructions and still claim his salary (p.191). Under business
regulations and terms, Scopes would be deemed guilty. However, in this case, it was merely if Scopes
violated the Butler Act. While Scopes did violate the Butler Act, the Butler Act itself would be
considered a violation of Scopes rights of freedom of religion and speech. Hence, this would be the
reason why in 1926, the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed the court guilty ruling and dismissed the

Analysis Of Girl At War By Sara Novic
Sara Novic s brutal but exquisite debut novel, Girl at War, is a gripping portrait of conflict and its
consequences. It tells the tale of a schoolgirl immersed in her country s civil war who, a decade later,
is tormented by what she has seen and done.
At the start of the Yugoslavian hostilities, Ana Juric is a carefree ten year old living in Zagreb. She
finds the trappings of war as more fascinating than treacherous. The police built the sandbag walls
[and] by the end of the week we d absorbed the sandbags into our playscape. Soon the war becomes
real when the family takes Ana s critically ill sister across the border for a MediMission flight. On the
perilous journey home, Chetnik paramilitaries slaughter Ana s parents. She escapes only

Nathan In The Poisonwood Bible
9) Share your thoughts on why the author never has Nathan Price narrate directly. Everything you
know about Nathan must be derived from what others said about him. Consider why Kingsolver chose
to omit Nathan s narration.
Nathan Price is not given a voice in The Poisonwood Bible because the story does not revolve around
him personally. The story revolves around his wife and four daughters, who are heavily affected by all
of his decisions and actions. Nathan indeed is the center of all the tragedy and hardship that the girls
endure, but Nathan does not suffer his own consequences, until his ultimate demise at the hand of the
Congolese. Also, I believe Kingsolver wanted a precise image of Nathan in the reader s mind
whenever he was found throughout the story. She wanted to depict him as abhorrent and repulsive, so
the readers despise him even more. Nathan is the center of pain for the Price family. First, he forces
them to leave their luxurious home in Bethlehem, Georgia, and move all the way to the Congo,
isolated from their modern society. All four of the children are deprived from a proper education, and
the entire family is restricted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every time Nathan was present in the story I was immediately displeased and wanted him gone. His
vulgar comments and actions anger the reader so much, and Kingsolver wanted that image to stay. She
wanted the readers to hate him so they can sympathize with Orleanna and her daughters. If she
included his narrations in the book, the reader could possibly see his soft side, and his anger. His
frustration has to have a root somewhere (his horrific experience in the war), and with the exposure of
his own thoughts and feelings, the reader would be able to witness them and have a new opinion of
him. For the purpose of The Poisonwood Bible though, Nathan had to remain the antagonist and stay

Analysis Of Katherine Shonfield s Walls Have Feelings ...
In this essay, I would be analysing Katherine Shonfield s book Walls have Feelings : architecture, film
and city where she discusses the constructional problems in Repulsion film and in Rosemary s Baby
new contemporary architectural interest which were introduced in 1960 s. I would be discussing the
damp penetration in detail, with that I would also be disusing the issues on sound penetration. I feel
each style has flaws even though while constructing it, designing it, there might not be but when once
users/occupants come back to measure in step with their nature or behaviour, there are some flaws in
the look the designer, architects, planners have created like Jonathan Hill has aforementioned, The

As a result of per the Building laws, the insulation is against airborne sounds like voices, not against
the impact of sound against the walls like hammering a nail, noise pipes or vigour bed sheets. Once
sound meets the building, like a floor, a ceiling or a wall the sound reflects back to the area, a part of it
is absorbed by the fabric and the left over is transmitted to the succeeding area. The sound absorbed,
mirrored and transmitted depends on each of the thickness/thinness of the wall as well as the material
on the wall. (Figure 1) Katherine Shonfield makes a case for this idea in her book Walls have Feelings
within which she highlights that in Rosemary s Baby, Rosemary is lying awake in her bed, the noise
from her neighbour is keeping her awake and once she sleeps the sound becomes her nightmare. This
might be because of the poor sense of designing, the wall that is supposed to defend her has failed to
guard her. Similarly, in Repulsion, the protagonist, Carol will hear a tolling bell from outside which
calls nuns in a neighbour convent to prayer. Due to poor planning of the building occupants may have
heavy health problems. Health problems like high blood pressure, deafness, sleep disturbances,
amendment of behaviour additionally as psychological issues, etc. The said nightmare which
Rosemary have could be due to the lack of sleeping or the disturbance of the sleep. The noise problem
should be solved

Rime Of The Ancient Mariner Essay
The Romantic time period was a time of great change where authors and poets would experiment with
new ideas and focus more on the individual. One such poet was Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet of the
epic narrative The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This poem is a lyrical ballad that accounts the story
of the Ancient Mariner and his marvelous journey of suffering and redemption. The plot to the poem is
so complex that it contains a plethora of literary devices the poet uses to convey his message, which is
that sometimes suffering is the only way to change a person. Coleridge employs symbolism in his
poem to explicate his message to the reader along with imagery to further enhance the suffering the
Ancient Mariner endures. Through Coolidge s use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when the ship is stuck in the middle of the ocean the crew is stuck under the blistering
sun And every tongue, through utter drought,/ Was withered at the root; (Coleridge 132 133). The
image this description evokes is that of a person who has not had a drink of water in days and is dying
of thirst. This creates the illusion that the reader should feel sympathy towards the sailors, however
one must remember that the sailors are being punished for their sin of the Albatross death. In addition
to the vivid description of a dehydrated person, Coleridge describes the utter loneliness the Ancient
Mariner feels while suffering alone on the ship. At one point, the Ancient Mariner decides to pray to
God however instead of God hearing his prayers A wicked whisper came, and made/ My heart as dry
as dust (Coleridge 243 244). The Ancient Mariner s prayer being ignored by God shows the true
gravity of his sin because God himself is choosing to ignore the Mariner s prayers. This implies that
the Ancient Mariner must suffer to truly repent for his sins and learn to respect all of God s creatures.
The last example of imagery Coleridge uses is when the Ancient Mariner s curse is finally lifted. After
suffering for countless days, the unforgiving curse is finally lifted the Ancient Mariner after he
recognizes the true beauty of God s creatures. The

AFGHANISTAN POST 2014; IMPERATIVES, DRIVERS AND SCENARIOS
Introduction
1. Afghanistan has remained under challenging conditions since 1979 with major transitional periods
almost every decade that badly affected the lives of its people. Firstly, war against former USSR, then
an internal war, and lately a war along as well as against the
US led NATO forces, which has had its effects inside Afghanistan as well as neighbourhood,
particularly Pakistan. Although the latest war (post 9/11) has been a result of actions taken by non
Afghan individuals and groups , main victims have been the people of Afghanistan. With another
transition approaching in 2014 when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Economic development is considered critical to Afghanistan s ability for shaping its future,
particularly after foreign assistance reduces or dries out. Apart from Govt s role to improve checks
balances (besides reducing corruption) to develop growth potential through foreign assistance, internal
security is prerequisite for foreign companies/vendors to undertake developmental work in
Afghanistan. Another factor that may hinder the process is the fact that Afghan society has yet not
recovered from the losses of wars during last 30 years that left 2 million dead, 700,000 widows
orphans, and about one million Afghan children born in Refugee camps. This factor along with poor
literacy rate provides limited skilled labour, middle managers, accountants, and information
professionals. (2) Foreign Financial Assistance/Aid. Currently, financial assistance / donor aid
accounts for 95% of Afghanistan s GDP. Besides running the state affairs and undertaking
developmental works, a sizeable amount is spent on training and sustenance of ANSF, which until
now is fully supported through foreign financial aid (majority being provided by the US). Through the
platforms of Chicago Conference (military assistance) and Tokyo Framework (broad based economic
assistance), International community has committed provision of funds / aid all through the
Transformation Decade, however with a clear mandate of reducing the amount with

Dysfunctional Model In Children
The purpose of this research is to explore child development by investigating children s understanding
about the structure of the earth. This main focus is to establish an understanding about mental models
created by children and discover how these concepts change in association with age and gender.
According to Vosniadou and Brewer (1992), mental models are dynamic in nature, generated by
children in response to questions asked and used to detect their perceptions of the earth. Mental
models are categorized to be naïve, synthetic or scientific. Naïve models are believed to be an
outcome of everyday experience; synthetic models to be formed to deal with the irregularity between
the flat earth and spherical model while scientific models are the ... Show more content on

The researchers conducted a questionnaire to 60 children (20 first graders, 20 third graders and 20
fifth graders) in order to investigate children s instinctive comprehension of the earth and how this is
modified following the introduction of the spherical model. It was concluded within their study that
developing children experience a consistent change from the initial model to the complex spherical
model and thus, produce substitute models within this process in order to adjust factual information
and preconceptions. A recent study by Straatemeier, Van der Mass and Jansen (2008) opposed
Vosniadou and Brewer s view by concluding that children s conceptual models are fragmented rather
than systematic. The children within their study did show a greater percentage of scientific knowledge
of the earth at older age however they demonstrated high constancies in their responses, thus it was
inferred that children s knowledge occurs piece by piece. This study confirms that children develop
clearer understanding at an older age however it also portrays that the nature of the knowledge
acquired still remains

The Hidden Life Behind The Zika Virus
The Hidden Life behind the Zika Virus As a pharmacy major, this semester I took the class medical
microbiology. As we talked about different diseases, we briefly touched on the history of some of the
diseases and it made me very curious to learn more about how the history of medicine has shaped our
world today. So, for this final paper I thought it would be a great way to explore more about world
history, through the lens of medicine. For the past few months, the Zika Virus has been a hot topic in
the news due to its recent outbreaks in the United States.
Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 in Uganda and is spread through the bite of an infected
mosquito. It can cause a fever, joint pain, a rash, and pink eye, but most ... Show more content on

Edward Jenner was a scientist in London at the time who made the connection that his milkmaids,
who had been infected with cowpox, were immune to smallpox. This connection is how Jenner
created the first smallpox vaccine using cowpox because it provided immunity for smallpox. This was
a revolutionary event in history, vaccines have been developed for diseases like chicken pox, shingles,
polio, influenza, and many others. Although there is no vaccine for the Zika virus, because of Jenner s
findings, it is quite possible that there could be a vaccine for Zika Virus in the future.
The Industrial Revolution time period was not only at time for new technologies and factories, but it
was a key time for breakthroughs in medicine. Before the Industrial Revolution, many scientists
thought that some diseases randomly grew out of non living objects, miasmas or fogs, in the air. In the
mid 1800s, a chemist by the name of Louis Pasteur proved this wrong and he showed that diseases
were actually caused by microscopic organisms in the environment. This discovery was revolutionary;
now doctors were able to begin finding prevention methods or cures for diseases. There is so much
that happens in the world today that we can trace back to Pasteur s discovery. Without his findings,
there would be no way to protect from treatable diseases. Because of Pasteur s discovery, more
research will be able to be done about Zika virus because it is failure unfamiliar to most people

Essay about teenage wasteland
The Teenage Wasteland, why was it so good?
Growing up in the recent generations is very challenging. Children at such young ages, even younger
than teens have been faced with such perilous decisions. It is especially hard for teenagers to find
acceptance at this point in their lives. Here is an instance that is so common in this day and age, yet
this particular case is only fiction. A teenage boy named Donny has been going through a few changes
in his appearance. His parents, Matt and Daisy, are somewhat disturbed yet they don t say much to
him. Then one day Daisy gets a call from Donny s school administrator and tells her that his grades

He required some academic help and a better sense of self worth. So a tutor was strongly advised and
Daisy and Matt just agree to hire one, wanting only the best for Donny. This not only was a mistake to
hire Cal but it also cost them a fortune too. I feel Donny s parents should have dealt with his problem.
All he needed was parents that just had time to talk to him and give him a little leeway at times.
Communication is a downfall displayed in Tyler s short story that is very realistic of parenting that
always leads to bigger problems. It is so common for parents to be too busy with their jobs and lives to
give their children all the attention and love needed. I feel Tyler truly conveyed a real life message in
writing Teenage Wasteland. It was very disturbing to see throughout the story how Cal, the tutor
becomes so controlling. Cal at first seemed reasonable in his method of tutoring Donny. Donny came
home so happy sometimes after his tutoring sessions. Yet gradually the tension sets in again and
Donny is back to his old troublesome self. Cal tells Daisy and Matt not to worry about Donny s slack
of performance. Cal even tells Daisy to let him handle the school if they call and complain about
Donny s grades. Tyler gives me some many different feelings about Cal. Is he a cynical man? Or is he
trying his best to help Donny? This is one of the reasons

The Responsibility Of The Manhattan Project During World...
The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project started during World War II in 1940. The war was
between the two opposite military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. Many new weapons were
manufactured during this war era. Two of these weapons happen to be Little Boy and Fat Man. These
two weapons are nuclear atomic bombs, and they also ended World War II. The Manhattan Project
was responsible in manufacturing these weapons. Therefore, the United States (U.S.) benefited from
the Manhattan Project by using its weapons against Japan and dropping two nuclear bombs on Japan s
country which caused great destruction and gave them no choice but to surrender. In 1939, after
uranium fission was discovered, many people were discussing atomic ... Show more content on

The letter stated that German Nazi s were trying to purify Uranium 235, if they were to purify it they
would be able to create an atomic bomb. He also told the president that the U.S. should start building
in order to beat the other countries in making the nuclear weapons. On October 11th, 1939 Alexander
Sachs (a scientist) went to President Franklin Roosevelt and discussed Albert Einstein s letter. The
president thought it was a good idea, so he started funding the project. This project was known as the
Manhattan Project. Once it was approved many scientists got involved, some scientists that got
involved were: Ken Bainbridge (test director of the project), David Bohm (theoretical physics,
philosophy, and neuropsychology), Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigher, Otto Frisch, Rudolf Peieris, Felix
Bloch, Niels Bohr, Emilio Segre, James Franck, Enrico Fermi, Klaus Fuchs, and Eward Teiler. All
these scientists got involved thus starting the Manhattan Project. In 1939, American scientists (many
of them were refugees in Europe) recommended the development of ways to use nuclear fission for
military purposes. Most of the existing research had been performed at Columbia University in New
York City. The project was based in Manhattan, New York. There was more than 30 laboratories and
sites, also there was more than 130,000 people that were involved in different parts of nuclear research

evidence that demonstrates an association between hearing loss and cognitive deterioration. The 2015

According to the study, 81% of a subgroup (30 of 37) of the sample group showed improved global
cognitive function after one year using the implant, while the rest of the seven subjects in that
subgroup simply remained stable. Figure 3 is a column graph that shows the subjects mean scores
from the NCIQ test measuring quality of life. In all of the six subdomains, scores improved in the span
of six months after implantation and remained stable in the interval between six months and one year
later. The results of Table 1 specify an association between cochlear implantation and increased
cognitive test scores in the immediate future, but cannot be proven to prevent further degeneration in
the long term. In Table 2 researchers found a correlation between the improvement of NCIQ scores
and the increase in speech perception scores one year after subjects received implantation and aural
rehabilitation. (B) Overall, found that the journalistic article presented the research in an accurate,
nonbiased manner. The study wasn t too complex for the average person to understand, due to the fact
that it was mainly just a controlled evaluation of a pretty common and low risk surgery (depending on
the experience of the surgeon). Therefore, the journalists simply presented the results of the French
study and incorporated an American otolaryngologist s opinion about cochlear implantation. The only

Monastic Religion
1 What is Monasticism?
Monasticism is a spiritual approach of living life in which one abandons everything in the world and
dedicates oneself entirely to divine work. Monastic life plays a significant part in many Christian
churches, particularly the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. The goal was always to grow the spirit
and break the body. According to the book, turning points, the monastic contribution is to whatever is
pure, noble, right true, lovely and admirable.

I think they will also focus on the union of all Christians, although there is freedom of religion, as you

Christian missions may add the current concerns and issues of that time.
3 Where do you see the Christian church worldwide going? What will be your place in it?
I think the Christian church today is face with a direction issue we hear on the news that a lot has been
going with Priests, Pastors Etc., in the other hand, now more people are focusing on Christ. Places that
no one knew or heard about Jesus start to familiarize with the Gospel. I think, what the Church should
be focusing more on is the connection with each other as Christians, as the old traditions. As
followers, we re not supposed to be individuals, we need to help each built the kingdom of Christ. As
a Christian, I will make sure that I preach the word of God not only in preaching and learning but

How Is Imagery Used In The Sniper
The short story, The Sniper, takes place in Dublin, Ireland, in 1922, during the Irish Civil War. On the
rooftops, lay two snipers who are in the middle of a shootout, after dusk. The main character of focus,
a Republican sniper, is pursued throughout the whole story. Faced with numerous challenges, he
battles unbearable pain, atop the impossible situation placed before him. At certain times, he uses his
utter cleverness to outsmart the free state sniper. Eventually, he figures out that the man he shot was
his brother. Liam O Flaherty uses strong sensory and imagery details, inner thinking, and revealing
actions to support and enhance the short story, The Sniper.

The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the
moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets
and the dark waters of the Liffey... Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the
silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Liam O Flaherty starts the story
off with a strong sense of detail, and it immediately emerges the reader into the story and makes them
envision being in Dublin at the time of the war. Halfway throughout the story, the sniper gets shot. The
author uses sensory details to create an image that makes the reader envision the actual pain the
character is battling against. Then taking out his field dressing, he ripped open the packet with his
knife. He broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drip into the wound. A paroxysm of
pain swept through him. He placed the cotton wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over
it. He tied the ends with his teeth. When the author emerges the reader into the story, it makes them
able to relate to the agony the sniper is in, which contributes back to the mood.

Automotive Technician
There are millions of automotive vehicles racing on the roads everywhere. Besides that, there are
numerous automotive manufacturers and new types of vehicles such as hybrids and full electric, which
make each vehicle technologically different from another. Naturally, a different skill set and
knowledge base is required to repair each automobile.
With time and use, cars tend to wear out and have diverse problems. This is where the role of an
automotive technician begins. They are not only responsible for identifying the specific causes of
problems in automobiles but also for correcting the problems through diagnosis and repair.
They help prolong the life of a vehicle and improve its efficiency by using specialized tools and

Technologies used in different vehicles are evolving with high tech computer and safety systems as
well as power plants for electric and hybrid cars. As new technologies develop, there is more of a need
for specialized technicians to diagnose and repair vehicles with hi tech systems.
Due to a shortage of highly skilled automotive technicians, unparalleled opportunities are in store for
specialized automotive technicians to work and develop within the automotive repair field.
Employment shortages in other fields in some cases have been outsourced, but automotive repair is
one that can t be outsourced. Opportunities to work with dealers and repair facilities should be readily
available for many years to come for a specialized automotive technician with the proper training and
certification!
One doesn t necessarily have to be a graduate or a postgraduate in order to work as a general
automotive technician. You can begin your career during high school by joining the training programs
popularly offered to students. It will give you a basic know how about cars, their parts and systems.
Therefore, by the time you graduate high school, you may already be earning money and will be

John Donne s Poetry
John Donne is in fact a pioneer in the poetic wit of love; he has paved the way for many metaphysical
poets after him. His style of writing, although immediately recognizable, formed to the events
unfolding around him. His work covers his early years of sensuality, where he produced explicit
sexual poetry, along with his later years of religious study, where he wrote explicit religious poetry, a
lot of which are hard to tell apart. Because none of Donne s poetry was published while he was living,
it is difficult for us to date it accurately, but we can assume that he wrote his more sensual poetry
before he went to work with the church. He changed the way most poets of the 16th and 17th centuries
wrote and had a large impact on the poets to follow after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,
Donne compares two lovers to the points on a compass. This is surprising because Donne was not
using the conventional Petrarchan conceit to make comparisons like his colleagues. A metaphysical
conceit requires a more introspective way of reasoning to understand the speaker s emotions. Many
were shocked over how Donne transformed the conceit, failing then to see that his use of the
metaphysical conceit offered new insight into his poems and lyrics.
Another way Donne differs from his fellow Renaissance poets is with the use of a present listener.
Donne writes directly to whom the poem was written for, while the other poets of his day; mostly
write their poems without directing it towards a specific listener. His poems have very few large
descriptive passages like the one s used in the works of Edmund Spenser. Donne s poetry also doesn t
have the smooth, poetic flow that the other Renaissance poets had. Donne has done away with the
poetic flow and instead opted to use a speaking voice, whose syntax can easily show the intensity of

Mate Selection
Mate selection is an evolutionary process in which selection is dependent on the attractiveness of an
individual s phenotypic trait, such as age and sex. For example, women feel that reliability,
dominance, wealth and generosity are important in a mate, while men believe attractiveness and
creativity are important. Women investment more time in searching for a mate because women are,
typically, responsible for birthing and raising a child and need a mate that would protect her and their
offspring and provide for them. Men, on the other hand, do not invest much in mate selection. When
resources are scarce, women seek resources in their mate and man look for attractiveness. However,
the goal is to locate the best possible mate. Age differences

The Soviet Union As A Great Nation
Although often overlooked World War 2 can arguably seen as the most critical event in the history of
the Soviet Union. The result of the war was the epitome of Stalin s vision of success for the Soviet
Union. The War initially had a significantly positive impact on the Soviet Union in the short term,
however the results and effects of the War were a factor that ultimately led to the collapse of the
Soviet Union as a whole.
The short term impact World War 2 had for the Soviet Union was positive for the growth and
evolution of the Soviet Union. The War both enhanced nationalism, and propelled the Soviet Union to
a major world player. In the eyes of Stalin, WWII was exactly what the Soviet Union needed to evolve
into a great nation. The war created great sense of nationalism and unity that strengthened the core of
the Soviet Union. Just as Stalin had hoped for the Soviet Union became arguably the most
nationalistic world power at the time; looking at the way the Soviet Union fought the war can
reasonably conclude this. The Soviets didn t not fight the war conservatively whatsoever. Stalin and

The Main Features And Characteristics Of A Slum
A slum is a heavily populated urban informal settlement characterized by substandard housing and
squalor. While slums differ in size and other characteristics, most lack reliable sanitation services,
supply of clean water, reliable electricity, law enforcement and other basic services. Slum residences
vary from shanty houses to professionally built dwellings that because of poor quality construction or
provision of services have deteriorated into slums.
Main features and characteristics of the slums are poor connectivity to the main city, lack of proper
sanitation conditions and lack of electricity and are densely populated and generally have a very high
occupancy rate. Slums are usually characterized by urban breeding grounds for social ... Show more

The Indian Supreme Court has also recognized the right to water and proper sanitation conditions
under the right to life provision of its constitution. Hence according to the above said statements, the
rights of the people living in the slum areas are often violated and are often hampered also.
A UN expert group has created an operational definition of a slum as an area that combines to various
extents the following characteristics: inadequate access of safe water; inadequate access to sanitation
and other infrastructure; poor structural quality of housing; overcrowding; and insecure residential
status. To these one might add the low socioeconomic status of residents of these areas.
The problem of slums have started because of excess migration of people from the rural areas to the
urban areas and when the people who have migrated do not get proper place to settle down and live,
the settlement of the slum areas (mostly in the outer parts of the city) takes place. But the settlements
in these slums are not proper and lack basic facilities of sanitation, electricity, connection to the roads,
proper construction of houses

Great Lakes Water Quality Essay
Water quality in the Great Lakes is something that has been a criticall issue in the Great Lakes Region
for a number of years. Water quality can be anything that affects the benefits humans derives from
water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is possible. Many
invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the
Great Lakes. The ecosystem and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion.
I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the Great Lakes is to prevent the
problem from happening before it already has.
Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes
in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100
inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel from European
waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes.
The invading species began to attach itself to almost every solid thing in the Great Lakes. These can
stick to boats, damage structures such as docks and piers, and they can clog water intake pipes, which
are used for drinking and industrial use. Invasive species like the zebra ... Show more content on

Therefore, in my opinion, the best approaches for dealing with the invasive species is to create
effective mechanisms to prevent their introduction in the first place before it happens, create
monitoring systems for detecting new infestations and we need to move rapidly to eradicate newly
detected invaders. Once invasive species become established and spread, it can be extraordinarily
difficult and costly to control or get rid of them all

The 2005 Lifetime Film Human Trafficking
An ounce of cocaine wholesale: $1,200. But you can only sell it once. A woman or child: $50 to
$1,000. But you can sell them each day, every day, over and over again. The markup is immeasurable.
This quote from the 2005 Lifetime film Human Trafficking , however chilling and horrifying, is true.
Human trafficking is the commercial trade of human beings who are subjected to involuntary acts
such as begging, sexual exploitation, or involuntary servitude. Human trafficking is an umbrella term
used to describe all forms of modern day slavery. No longer is this a term from the past, but a horrific
reality in our present and, unfortunately, our future. Every 10 minutes, a woman or child is forced into
labor (McGill 12). Even though we live in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are sold by pimps for sex, and the sexual exploiters (or johns) are often given wide latitude in
how they treat the victims. Some pimps even allow johns to murder the women and girls for an
additional temporary sexual rush. The Lifetime movie, Human Trafficking , give many disturbing but
accurate examples as to how people are lured into forced labor. Throughout the film, there are stories
of five girls forced into prostitution. First is Helena from Czechoslovakia. Helena is brought to Vienna
by a handsome stranger who says he wants to marry her, and then sells her to traffickers. Second is
Nadia from the Ukraine. A modeling agency recruits her and brings her to the U.S. where they turn
against her and force her into prostitution. Third is Annie from the U.S. While vacationing in the
Philippines with her parents, Annie is lured away from her parents and kidnapped. Finally is Jasmine
from the Philippines. She is a member of a very poor family and sold to a trafficker by her father.
Although these examples are derived from a film, they are excellent examples as to the many ways
young women are coerced into forced labor. Recruiting victims is effective when the potential victim s
family members are involved (Bales 44). The traffickers convince the girls to stay and keep their
mouths shut by threatening to do serious harm to the victim s loved ones. The traffickers know where

Udayan Care Executive Summary
An organization not growing continually was an organization in decline. As previous mentioned, the
urgency things that it is to build a new strategy, which could solve challenges that Udayan Care faced,
like fund raising challenge, human resource challenge, and etc. Based on the previous analysis, A
competitive strategy is the solution for Udayan Care.
According to Michael Porter (1996), Competitive strategy is about being different. It means
deliberately choosing to perform activities differently or to perform different activities than rivals to
deliver a unique mix of value. (p. 64) The textbook introduced five different types of competitive
strategies, which included low cost leadership, differentiation, best cost provider, focused
differentiation, and focused low cost (Thompson et al., 2014). In this particular case, best cost
provider strategy and focused low cost strategy will be the alternative to solve issues for Udayan Care.

Supporting The Millennium Bridge ?
Visit: The Millennium Bridge
For our physics practical, we visited The Millennium Bridge a pedestrian footbridge located at the
heart of London that crosses the River Thames. It links the City and St Paul s Cathedral to the north
with the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern on Bankside. Construction of this infrastructure began in the
late 1998 by the engineering company Arup and it was launched on the 10 June 2000.
Structure of Bridge:
Structurally, the bridge is a composition of two key metals steel (2 x 1011 Nm 2) and aluminum.

This feature was achieved by ensuring that the sag ratio remained low. The bridge has also become a
navigation site for many commercial and tourist traffic in the River Thames Waterways.
Problems Occurred:
Furthermore, when the millennium bridge opened within the first weekend around 100,000 people had
crossed the bridge. Due to such heavy traffic, this lead to something called resonance. Resonance is
when the input vibrations frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the structure itself,
causing large deflections to develop. The issue caused the bridge to undergo a swaying movement;
hence led to its closure. After extensive research and analysis, it was found that the movement was
caused by synchronized pedestrian footfall. To prevent this there were two options taken into account
the lateral stiffening and the damping; both were used in order to increase the natural frequency of the
structure so it did not match the footfall. In addition structures called fluid viscous dampers and tuned
mass dampers were installed to control both horizontal and vertical movements.
In Relation To Practical:
The visit influences our practical as we gain an understanding of how in the engineering industry
selection of materials is determined using indicators such as Young s Modulus. Young s Modulus is a
measure of stiffness that is independent of the particular sample of a substance. This indicator is very
vital as it determines the material s strength, toughness

AAnalysis On Probabilistic Risk
. Risk AnalysisEquation Chapter 5 Section 1 Probabilistic risk analysis is becoming more and more
important in long term damage estimation for structure. In 2010, American Society of Civil
Engineering (ASCE) defines Risk Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake ground motion maps
for the United States by explicitly targeting a probabilistic 1% risk of collapse in 50 years. Risk
analysis is used to combine with earthquake caused death, downtime and repair cost to estimate
seismic performance of bridges and other structures. For instance, according to [Bazzurro et al,2006],
post main shock risk is used to make a decision of repairing a building by calculating the probability
that aftershock ground motion (demand) will exceed the structural capacity. The goal of this chapter is
introducing a method to compute the probabilistic seismic risk for both main shock and aftershock.
Then we can use this to assess risk of specific structure in practice. The core of probabilistic seismic
risk analysis includes two parts: couples (1) ground motion hazard analysis for the site of interest; (2)
the fragility analysis of the structure (located on that site) with respect to potential ground motion
intensities. These two parts have been introduced in last few chapters, so the next step is to combine
all information about demand and capacity of the structure to compute the final risk results. 5.1. Main

Risk of understanding the market A successful approach to market orientation involves a systematic
approach to researching consumer behaviour. Missing the mark in this process creates a system
whereby the company uses ineffective data in its approach to reaching out to customers. Working with
wrong data is often worse than working with no data at all. In short, a company that is very small, lack
research resources or has high segmentation between its departments is at a disadvantage when it
comes to establishing marketing orientation.

Emily Dickinson Influences
Although Emily Dickinson was a complete recluse and was not recognized in her own time, she is
now recognized as one of the most influential poets in American Literature. Emily s work has left a
strong mark on today s writers. Dickinson began writing as a teenager with influences of her own.
Leonard Humphrey, principal of Amherst Academy, and a family friend named Benjamin Franklin
Newton, who sent Dickinson a book of poetry by Ralph Waldo Emerson, impacted and encouraged
her private works (Emily Dickinson Biography). While Emily s work was brilliant, very little of

While Emily s poetry often hinted at an unknown lover, her preserved letters give a sombre reflection.
Until Dickinson was in her mid 20s, her writing mostly took the form of letters. These letters she sent
out consist of a surprising number of those that she wrote from age 11 onward that have now been
preserved. She often sent to her brother, Austin, or to her own female friends, including Abiah Root,
Jane Humphrey, and Susan Gilbert. Susan would later marry Emily s elder brother, Austin. These
honorable communications overflow with humour, story telling, intellectual interest, and dark
reflection. Throughout her letters, one could infer that Emily Dickinson had given and demanded more
from her correspondents than she had received. She frequently construed that her correspondents lack
of response as confirmation of abandonment or even disloyalty. Nonetheless, the loss of friends,
whether through death or declining interest, became an underlying commodity for Dickinson. Much of
Emily s writing, both poetic and the form of letters, seems premised on a feeling of abandonment and
a matching attempt to oppose, overcome, or reflect on a sense of loneliness. There are very few letters
that remain today. Emily had previously asked that her

Fog Of War Film Analysis
The lesson that I personally found to be the most interesting was lesson one, which was to empathize
with your enemy. This is a lesson that should always be used, yet so rarely is. Throughout history it
could have prevented so much bloodshed, and when utilized correctly, it did successfully prevent
unneeded death. In the Fog of War film, this lesson is shown in two different ways. One way in which
it is successfully used and another way in which it is not used. Empathy was used in the Cuban
Missile Crisis. The President of the United States and his advisors attempted to get inside the head of
the Russians. By empathizing with them, they were able to come to the conclusion that no one wanted

Everyday we are tested as individuals to make the right choice. How we view ourselves as individuals

somewhat misleading. What might be a wrong decision for one person might be a solution to another.
So how do we define morals? Do we follow Gods moral rules because to do so would increase out
likelihood of obtaining salvation in the afterlife? Or is it simpler than that. Is God going to deny our
entrance into heaven because we have run a stop sign here and there? No. I believe our moral values

The Main Agents Of Change
This research aims to investigate the response of the main agents of change namely the educators and
administrators in Malaysia, to adopt the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It
specifically focuses on the interaction between the borrowed language policy and the agents
(administrators and educators) at the tertiary level of education and the ultimate aim is to investigate
how the macro level policy is acted out at micro level. To begin with, this research will examine on
how the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) has responded to overcome the insufficient level of
English proficiency particularly among graduates in Malaysia. Next, by drawing on various theoretical
resources on borrowed language policy as well as the concept of governmentality as a theoretical
framework of investigation, this research seeks to explore the extent to which this language policy is
embedded into the practices through the concept of governmentality. In addition, this research will
reveal the direction of localizing the global language policy that has taken place in the respective
institution by the administrators and educators, thus providing a better understanding on the
implementation of the policy. Finally, this research will also identify the challenges and advantages of
the existing language syllabus and institution s practices in line with the CEFR policy. In this first

The principles underpinning self directed support and how it differs to traditional support is as
follows:
Right to independent living If someone has an impairment they should be able to get the support they
need to live an independent life.
Right to a personal budget If someone needs ongoing support they should be able to decide how the

c. Support plan
Your Social worker will help you do your support plan and then it will be taken to a panel who will

d. Outcome focused review
An outcome focused review is part of the self directed support process. It is a way of carrying out
reviews that puts the main focus on the results being achieved for the person and his or her family. The
purpose of an outcome focused review is to:
Review progress in using a personal budget to achieve the outcomes set out in the person s support
plan
Share learning about what has been tried and worked or not worked
Identify next steps to achieve these goals
Update the support plan
Make clear if the person s support needs have changed, and
Help the council to check if the person is still eligible for social care.
The outcome focused review process is designed to be used for people who already have a personal
budget. However, it can work effectively for people who have not yet completed the self directed
support process, for example people who have an existing direct payment and those with a traditional
care package.
1.5 Outline the possible barriers to self directed support:
Some possible barriers to self directed support are as follows:
Self directed support is publicised insufficiently.
If the local third sector is not actively involved then practical and peer support for individuals may be
insufficient.
It is not always clear how

Human Mind Control
OCD is a phrase that gets to the existential core of worry, a clenched, demonic doubting that overrides
evidence, empiricism, plain common sense (Slater234). The meme theory states that a meme consists
of everything that is passed from person to person (Blackmore 37). In Strange Creatures by Susan
Blackmore and Who Holds the Clicker? by Lauren Slater both authors discuss the control humans
have over their minds. In Who Holds the Clicker Lauren Slater discusses DBS (deep brain
simulation), which is a type of psychosurgery in which electrical impulses are sent to certain portions
of the brain to control and change the emotions one feels. She discusses both the positive and
negatives of deep brain simulation through a specific patient named Mario and also presents the
control DBS can have over one s mind. Similarly, Blackmore in Strange Creatures discusses the meme
theory, which consists of any idea that is passed down from person to person. Both authors provide
information that allows people to draw conclusions relating to why people do not have control over
their minds. Even though some people believe that humans do have control over their minds,
Blackmore and Slater both successfully portray that in actuality humans do not have any control over
their minds because human thoughts and ideas are unoriginal products of external forces, many human
thoughts occur at deeper level of consciousness, and

senior living is actually a terrible place for the elderly. Especially, working at the Front Desk as the
receptionist, I have seen firsthand how these poor seniors are forced into these haunted luxurious

they suffer from various conditions and are just not safe in their home. Once adults become seniors,
they require a lot of attention and assistance, which is hard when running a whole household and a

Diagnosing Car Repair
If you are thinking of car repair, there are certain things you should know. For starters, you must
realize that the exercise can be divided into various categories in order to address different issues. For
instance, there are basic repairs, which can be carried out even by a beginner or anyone who owns a
vehicle. Then there are the advanced repairs, which can only be carried out by people with technical
knowledge. Things like oil change and changing tires can fit in the first category hence you can carry
them out yourself.
Another important thing to note is about checkups. Even though you might not intend to do any repair
work on your own, a huge percentage of checkups are your responsibility. For instance, you have to

When trying to address this, you should visit different providers to find out how they go about the
process. The best providers should diagnose the problem first before stating the cost. Remember, some
of them might charge for the diagnostic process, so this should be stated before they begin. Of course,
it would be nice if you find a provider who does not charge for diagnosing the problem.
Even though you might be interested in low cost providers, you should never compromise on service
quality. Most of the problems might have different fixes, but it is good to go for those that do not
compromise the safety of the vehicle and also offer a long term solution.
In most cases, you will find that the best car repair service will be offered at mid range prices. With
this in mind, you can be sure to get a good provider. Remember, regardless of your knowledge level in

What is art? Can it be defined in any single painting, or sculpture? Is it even something that can be
seen, or does it have to be experienced? The term quot;art quot; is so vague that it can be applied to
almost anything, really. Mostly, however, art should be that which frees our imagination. It connects
our conscious with our subconscious, putting into a visual form what we feel and think. It allows us to
explore our inner self and fill that urge to understand our minds and our universe. Art helps us to see
beyond the ordinary, to see what is in our hearts without being blinded by reality. When an artist

own interpretation, not mine. quot; Damien Hirst, whose display was also part of the show, said that
the mayor quot;may as well say, I only like Picasso and if you don t show it then I m going to cut your
funding. It s just pure censorship. quot; He may be right, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art sued the
city on September 28th, protesting the mayor s threat to freeze millions of dollars in funds.
To the relief of museum officials and art lovers across the country, the courts ruled on November 1st

Examples Of Nick s First Words In The Great Gatsby
What do you think makes a good first impression? A good handshake, eye contact, the way they are
dressed? Authors of books will often use first impressions to show personalities of a character. F. Scott
Fitzgerald is one of those authors. In his book, The Great Gatsby, he uses first impressions of the
characters presented to us to show their personality and how they may act or be portrayed as in the
book. Nick and Daisy both have impressions that are crucial to the story. When Nick, the main
character and narrator, speaks his first words in the book, his first words show the audience that he is
someone who doesn t let go of things as quickly as others and will always remember what you say.
Nicks first words are on the first page of the

Somatic Cell Cloning Blg Protein Milk
The aim was to clone a cow that didn t produce the BLG protein milk in its milk. Somatic cell nuclear
transfer (SCNT) is a technique of cloning used in Daisy the cow.
The steps taken in the process of SCNT cloning are: the nucleus, which contains the organism s DNA,
of a somatic cell is removed from a healthy egg after it has reached its dormant stage ( where cell
replication no longer occurs) and the rest of the cell is discarded. It is necessary for the cell to be in
dormant stage as dormant cells can stay in this state for long period of time, for this time period the
cell is inactive. At the same time, the nucleus of an egg cell is removed from another cow. The nucleus
of the somatic cell is then inserted into the enucleated egg cell. ... Show more content on

High School Sports Head Injury
Statistics state that it s a 47 percentage of high school football players receiving a serious head injury.
The article High School Struggle to Tackle Safety on the Football Field by Kendrick Calkins caught
my attention. The article started out as an assignment but ended up being something I was very
interested in learning more about. Three questions popped in my head the moment t I read this
particular article; what happens to the boys who end up having a head injury? Why does it happen?
And how does the family feel?
What happens to the boys who have the head injury? In high school football you never want to give up
or quit, so many boys who obtained an injury like that continues to play. But in some cases a lot of
young boys are dying to this head injury, because instead of stopping and treating the injury they
continue to play. There are rarely any players who actually stop playing because of one head injury.
For example there was a player who obtained a head injury and did not stop playing and the
consequence for that was his young life. One statistic stated 15.8 percent of football players who
sustain a head injury to severe enough to cause loss consciousness return to play the same day.
Why does this happen? These young high school boys joined this sport to better themselves, learn
discipline and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Families love the fact of their kids playing a sport, making friends, doing well in school. They rather
the kids be in a sport then out here on the streets. But as a parent you think of the good and the bad
outcomes to playing sports. Especially the mothers, a father knows and he expects his son to be tough
and never quit. So to the father it s just a simple sport but is it worth losing your son to something as
serious as this injury. A mother not knowing the sport, she still feels there are some down falls to the
sport but never thinks twice about it happening to her kid in particular. Families who will never get

School Schedule Change
The school I currently attend; Mckeel Academy of Technology, is in consideration to change our
school schedule. The hours of attendance would change from 7:28am 2:12pm with 7 periods to
8:45am 2:45pm with 6 periods. I have had mixed opinions about this idea of a schedule change, Is it
good or bad . I have asked around a lot, gathering other students opinion on what are school would be
like, Yes! We get to sleep in. or No, we get out later. After much thought I came up with the decision
that changed the bell schedule is a bad idea for this school and the students that attend it. The first one
thing that influenced my opinion was the topic of the time change to a later time. Many Mckeel
students are very athletic and competitive when it comes to sports at school.
Soccer, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Tennis are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mckeel is an A school, many students here at this school put their studies in the way of everything.
Studying and doing homework for hours every night to try to stay on top of work, taking AP and Duel
Enrollment classes to influence their college decisions and raise their GPA, begging the teachers for
extra credit to get their semester grade higher. A mass amount of students are looking for better
opportunities and classes to take. If their is six periods the amount of opportunities a student receives
now is less and students can t take a class they wish to take. I hope Mckeel Academy of Technology
will decline the decision to start and finish school later in the day and have only six periods. I would
rather have the schedule to where it is now then only go to school for six hours everyday. I do not like
this topic because students do not have as much academic choices as they do now and students who
participate in clubs and sports will play a sport later in the day and it will give them less time to do
different activities after school sports and

Critique Of The Kampung Nelayan Restaurant
The city of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah is known for its iconic tourist attractions and vibrant culinary
scene. While many of the visitors often miss out dining at an upscale restaurant here, they can never
miss to explore the seafood choices offered at many of the Kota Kinabalu s locally renowned
restaurants. Instead of trying western or fusion food in Kota Kinabalu, you should try the local cuisine
and seafood dishes. The town is popular for some uniquely flavored seafood dishes and sides.
Because of the availability of abundant seafood and fresh produce, the restaurant scene in this town is
dominated by local seafood cuisine. Let it be the spicy sambal flavored meaty seafood soups or crispy

Alpha Phi Interview Report

Interview
Interview of Madison Miles on how greek life and friendship go hand in hand.
What sorority are you in?
Alpha Phi
Do you think this is the best sorority on campus?
Yeah, because we do a lot for the community. We do our heart walk, which is coming up on October
28th. We also do a red dress gala in the spring. All the money that we raise we donate to womens heart
health. We also do things like go to nursing homes, soup kitchens, charity events. Our sister has a
lupus walk coming up. We also do a lot of things together like going to get food, hang out on the
weekends, shopping, and lazy days in.
What are your thoughts on greek life?

I began thinking who the best interviewee would be for this story and I thought the Student
Involvement Center would be the best bet. I thought if I could talk to one of their students then I could
get both angles of all the things the Student Involvement Centers does to help students get involved
and also how it helped them to make friends. Hopeful, I emailed them. I never got anything back. So, I
searched for a phone number with no luck and emailed them again. By this time, I knew I had to
change my story a little bit and get a new person to interview. My backup plan was to interview a
sorority girl about how going greek helped her make friends. I was going to go in the O (which is
where all the sororities and fraternities hang out and have offices) and ask if anyone would like to do
an interview for me. The more I thought about this the more I realized how much of an awful plan it
was. Instead, I remembered there was a sorority girl in my philosophy class. I asked her if she could
do an interview and she was busy until later that week. I had finally got everything straightened

Essay on Stress Management
Stress Management
Responses to stressors present different impacts on each individual. Stressors have a physical and
psychological effect on people although some people seem to be much less effected by stress being
able to withstand high levels of stress almost as if there daily lives depend on it. Even though it is
accepted stress is with us from are waking moment to the minute we sleep, almost all individuals
through time suffer physical or psychological illness. Individual responses to stress have been put into
to categories of personality type; a distinction has been made and put into a category of either type A
or type B.
Type A are said to be competitive and assertive high achievers, ... Show more content on

Here we will look at the different approaches plus the strengths and weaknesses of these methods.
PHYSICAL METHOD OF STRESS MANAGEMENT.
Drugs.
Strengths.
Prescribed drug treatment seems to be the strongest source of psychological stress control. Anti
depressants and BZs are prescribed to reduce the feelings of anxiety or depression induced through
stress induced illness. The effect of the drugs is simple; they suitably block or reduce the activity of
the brains neurotransmitter for release of serotonin, or directly reduce activity in the pathways leading
to the nervous system around the body, not allowing blood pressure or the heart rate to rise, as it is
these bodily systems that influence the feelings of anxiety. Once blocked or suppressed the individual
when faced with a stressor will feel much calmer and able to cope with the unwanted stressor
presented to them.
Weaknesses.
All drugs present side effects which are usually unpleasant. Most common side effects are nausea,
dizziness and stomach upset. Other side effects experienced are drowsiness and subdued awareness,
these are more serious side effects which can cause a threat to personal safety whilst driving or if you
are in a job that requires you to operate machinery. Drugs only treat the physical feelings experienced
from stress and not the psychological cause so also

  • 5. Nathan In The Poisonwood Bible 9) Share your thoughts on why the author never has Nathan Price narrate directly. Everything you know about Nathan must be derived from what others said about him. Consider why Kingsolver chose to omit Nathan s narration. Nathan Price is not given a voice in The Poisonwood Bible because the story does not revolve around him personally. The story revolves around his wife and four daughters, who are heavily affected by all of his decisions and actions. Nathan indeed is the center of all the tragedy and hardship that the girls endure, but Nathan does not suffer his own consequences, until his ultimate demise at the hand of the Congolese. Also, I believe Kingsolver wanted a precise image of Nathan in the reader s mind whenever he was found throughout the story. She wanted to depict him as abhorrent and repulsive, so the readers despise him even more. Nathan is the center of pain for the Price family. First, he forces them to leave their luxurious home in Bethlehem, Georgia, and move all the way to the Congo, isolated from their modern society. The sound absorbed, mirrored and transmitted depends on each of the thickness/thinness of the wall as well as the material on the wall. (Figure 1) Katherine Shonfield makes a case for this idea in her book Walls have Feelings within which she highlights that in Rosemary s Baby, Rosemary is lying awake in her bed, the noise from her neighbour is keeping her awake and once she sleeps the sound becomes her nightmare. This might be because of the poor sense of designing, the wall that is supposed to defend her has failed to guard her. One such poet was Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet of the epic narrative The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This poem is a lyrical ballad that accounts the story of the Ancient Mariner and his marvelous journey of suffering and redemption. The plot to the poem is so complex that it contains a plethora of literary devices the poet uses to convey his message, which is that sometimes suffering is the only way to change a person. Coleridge employs symbolism in his poem to explicate his message to the reader along with imagery to further enhance the suffering the Ancient Mariner endures. Through Coolidge s use ... For example, when the ship is stuck in the middle of the ocean the crew is stuck under the blistering sun And every tongue, through utter drought,/ Was withered at the root; (Coleridge 132 133). The image this description evokes is that of a person who has not had a drink of water in days and is dying of thirst. This creates the illusion that the reader should feel sympathy towards the sailors, however one must remember that the sailors are being punished for their sin of the Albatross death. In addition to the vivid description of a dehydrated person, Coleridge describes the utter loneliness the Ancient Mariner feels while suffering alone on the ship. At one point, the Ancient Mariner decides to pray to God however instead of God hearing his prayers A wicked whisper came, and made/ My heart as dry as dust (Coleridge 243 244). The Ancient Mariner s prayer being ignored by God shows the true gravity of his sin because God himself is choosing to ignore the Mariner s prayers. This implies that the Ancient Mariner must suffer to truly repent for his sins and learn to respect all of God s creatures. The last example of imagery Coleridge uses is when the Ancient Mariner s curse is finally lifted. After suffering for countless days, the unforgiving curse is finally lifted the Ancient Mariner after he recognizes the true beauty of God s creatures. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Apart from Govt s role to improve checks balances (besides reducing corruption) to develop growth potential through foreign assistance, internal security is prerequisite for foreign companies/vendors to undertake developmental work in Afghanistan. Another factor that may hinder the process is the fact that Afghan society has yet not recovered from the losses of wars during last 30 years that left 2 million dead, 700,000 widows orphans, and about one million Afghan children born in Refugee camps. This factor along with poor literacy rate provides limited skilled labour, middle managers, accountants, and information professionals. (2) Foreign Financial Assistance/Aid. Water quality can be anything that affects the benefits humans derives from water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is possible. Many invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the Great Lakes. The ecosystem and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion. I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the Great Lakes is to prevent the problem from happening before it already has. Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100 inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel from European waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes. The invading species began to attach itself to almost every solid thing in the Great Lakes. These can stick to boats, damage structures such as docks and piers, and they can clog water intake pipes, which are used for drinking and industrial use. Invasive species like the zebra ... Human trafficking is the commercial trade of human beings who are subjected to involuntary acts such as begging, sexual exploitation, or involuntary servitude. Human trafficking is an umbrella term used to describe all forms of modern day slavery. No longer is this a term from the past, but a horrific reality in our present and, unfortunately, our future. Some pimps even allow johns to murder the women and girls for an additional temporary sexual rush. The Lifetime movie, Human Trafficking , give many disturbing but accurate examples as to how people are lured into forced labor. Throughout the film, there are stories of five girls forced into prostitution. First is Helena from Czechoslovakia. Helena is brought to Vienna by a handsome stranger who says he wants to marry her, and then sells her to traffickers. Second is Nadia from the Ukraine. A modeling agency recruits her and brings her to the U.S. where they turn against her and force her into prostitution. Third is Annie from the U.S. While vacationing in the Philippines with her parents, Annie is lured away from her parents and kidnapped. Finally is Jasmine from the Philippines. She is a member of a very poor family and sold to a trafficker by her father. Although these examples are derived from a film, they are excellent examples as to the many ways young women are coerced into forced labor. Recruiting victims is effective when the potential victim s family members are involved (Bales 44). The bridge has also become a navigation site for many commercial and tourist traffic in the River Thames Waterways. Problems Occurred: Furthermore, when the millennium bridge opened within the first weekend around 100,000 people had crossed the bridge. Due to such heavy traffic, this lead to something called resonance. Resonance is when the input vibrations frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the structure itself, causing large deflections to develop. The issue caused the bridge to undergo a swaying movement; hence led to its closure. After extensive research and analysis, it was found that the movement was caused by synchronized pedestrian footfall. To prevent this there were two options taken into account the lateral stiffening and the damping; both were used in order to increase the natural frequency of the structure so it did not match the footfall. In addition structures called fluid viscous dampers and tuned mass dampers were installed to control both horizontal and vertical movements. In Relation To Practical: The visit influences our practical as we gain an understanding of how in the engineering industry selection of materials is determined using indicators such as Young s Modulus. • 26. AAnalysis On Probabilistic Risk . Risk AnalysisEquation Chapter 5 Section 1 Probabilistic risk analysis is becoming more and more important in long term damage estimation for structure. In 2010, American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) defines Risk Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake ground motion maps for the United States by explicitly targeting a probabilistic 1% risk of collapse in 50 years. Risk analysis is used to combine with earthquake caused death, downtime and repair cost to estimate seismic performance of bridges and other structures. For instance, according to [Bazzurro et al,2006], post main shock risk is used to make a decision of repairing a building by calculating the probability that aftershock ground motion (demand) will exceed the structural capacity. The goal of this chapter is introducing a method to compute the probabilistic seismic risk for both main shock and aftershock. Then we can use this to assess risk of specific structure in practice. The core of probabilistic seismic risk analysis includes two parts: couples (1) ground motion hazard analysis for the site of interest; (2) the fragility analysis of the structure (located on that site) with respect to potential ground motion intensities. These two parts have been introduced in last few chapters, so the next step is to combine all information about demand and capacity of the structure to compute the final risk results. 5.1. Three questions popped in my head the moment t I read this particular article; what happens to the boys who end up having a head injury? Why does it happen? And how does the family feel? What happens to the boys who have the head injury? In high school football you never want to give up or quit, so many boys who obtained an injury like that continues to play. But in some cases a lot of young boys are dying to this head injury, because instead of stopping and treating the injury they continue to play. There are rarely any players who actually stop playing because of one head injury. For example there was a player who obtained a head injury and did not stop playing and the consequence for that was his young life. One statistic stated 15.8 percent of football players who sustain a head injury to severe enough to cause loss consciousness return to play the same day. Why does this happen? These young high school boys joined this sport to better themselves, learn discipline and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So to the father it s just a simple sport but is it worth losing your son to something as serious as this injury. A mother not knowing the sport, she still feels there are some down falls to the sport but never thinks twice about it happening to her kid in particular. Families who will never get their sons ... The hours of attendance would change from 7:28am 2:12pm with 7 periods to 8:45am 2:45pm with 6 periods. I have had mixed opinions about this idea of a schedule change, Is it good or bad . I have asked around a lot, gathering other students opinion on what are school would be like, Yes! We get to sleep in. or No, we get out later. After much thought I came up with the decision that changed the bell schedule is a bad idea for this school and the students that attend it. The first one thing that influenced my opinion was the topic of the time change to a later time. Many Mckeel students are very athletic and competitive when it comes to sports at school. Soccer, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Tennis are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mckeel is an A school, many students here at this school put their studies in the way of everything. Studying and doing homework for hours every night to try to stay on top of work, taking AP and Duel Enrollment classes to influence their college decisions and raise their GPA, begging the teachers for extra credit to get their semester grade higher. A mass amount of students are looking for better opportunities and classes to take. If their is six periods the amount of opportunities a student receives now is less and students can t take a class they wish to take. I hope Mckeel Academy of Technology will decline the decision to start and finish school later in the day and have only six periods. I would rather have the schedule to where it is now then only go to school for six hours everyday. I do not like this topic because students do not have as much academic choices as they do now and students who participate in clubs and sports will play a sport later in the day and it will give them less time to do different activities after school sports and ... I began thinking who the best interviewee would be for this story and I thought the Student Involvement Center would be the best bet. I thought if I could talk to one of their students then I could get both angles of all the things the Student Involvement Centers does to help students get involved and also how it helped them to make friends. Hopeful, I emailed them. I never got anything back. So, I searched for a phone number with no luck and emailed them again. By this time, I knew I had to change my story a little bit and get a new person to interview. My backup plan was to interview a sorority girl about how going greek helped her make friends. I was going to go in the O (which is where all the sororities and fraternities hang out and have offices) and ask if anyone would like to do an interview for me. The more I thought about this the more I realized how much of an awful plan it was. Instead, I remembered there was a sorority girl in my philosophy class.
