Non-interactive big-data analysis prohibits experimentation and can interrupt the analyst’s train of thoughts but analyzing and drawing insights in real time is no easy task with jobs often taking minutes/hours to complete. What if you want to put a interactive interface in front of that data that allows iterative insights? What if you need that interactive experience to be sub second?
Traditional SQL and most MPP/NoSQL databases cannot run complex calculations over large data in a performant manner. Popular distributed systems such as Hadoop or Spark can execute jobs but their job overhead prohibits sub second response times. Learn how an in-memory computing framework enabled us to perform complex analysis jobs on massive data points with sub second response times — allowing us to plug it into a simple, drag-and-drop web 2.0 interface.

Streaming analytics webinar | 9.13.16 | Guest: Mike Gualtieri from ForresterCubic Corporation
Business success relies heavily on taking the right action, at the right time, all the time. And actions are dictated by data. But the batch-oriented, collect-store-contemplate model employed by Big Data Analytics technologies is incomplete because it does not make use of live data in real time. Without live, real-time data insights gathered are not up-to-date, and cannot accurately inform applications and services that would benefit from continuous, real-time context for time-sensitive decisions.
To thrive, businesses need to be able to use both live and historical data in their applications and services, continuously, concurrently, and correctly and the only technology currently capable of handling it is streaming analytics. Streaming analytics computes data right now, when it can be analyzed and put to good use to make applications of all kinds contextual and smarter.
This webinar held in collaboration with Forrester, Inc., showcased how streaming analytics applications can be built in minutes, to:
- Aggregate, enrich, and analyze a high throughput of data from multiple, disparate live data sources and in any format to identify patterns, detect opportunities, automate actions, and dynamically adapt
- Easily ingest streaming data from multiple disparate sources to multiple sources, within and between cloud and on-premises environments
- Analyze and act on data as it arrives, without needing to store, eliminating unnecessary security risks and storage costs
- Enable real-time analytics with existing business intelligence and data assets.

Streaming analytics is about knowing and acting on what's happening in your business and with your customers right this second. Forrester calls these perishable insights because they occur at a moment's notice and you must act on them fast. The high velocity, whitewater flow of data from innumerable real-time data sources such as market data, internet of things, mobile, sensors, clickstream, and even transactions remain largely un-navigated by most firms. The opportunity to leverage streaming analytics has never been greater. In this session, Forrester analyst Mike Gualtieri explains the opportunity, use cases, and how to use cloud-based streaming solutions in your application architecture.
The world around us is changing. Data is embedded in everything, and users from all lines of business want to leverage this data to influence decisions. The trick is to create a culture for pervasive analytics and empower the business to use data everywhere.
The core enabling technology to make this happen is Apache Hadoop. By leveraging Hadoop, organizations of all sizes and across all industries are making business models more predictable, and creating significant competitive advantages using big data.
Join Cloudera and Forrester to learn:
- What we mean by pervasive analytics, how it impacts your organization, and how to get started

VoltDB and Flytxt Present: Building a Single Technology Platform for Real-Tim...VoltDB
Webinar presented by Prateek Kapadia, CTO, Flytxt and Ryan Betts, CTO, VoltDB.
Prateek and Ryan highlight the technology stack for Fast + Big data and iterative analytics using Hadoop and VoltDB. In addition, they will outline use cases for Big Data analytics with Hadoop, iterative analytics and machine learning using Spark and real-time analytics using VoltDB supplemented by Big Data + iterative analytics.
Dr. Michael Stonebraker will share his "one-size-doesn’t-fit-all" perspective when it comes to picking the right tool for the job. He will explain the fast data stack, why traditional RDBMS’s fall short and how a modern in-memory SQL, ACID compliant, database with a scale-out architecture is the right choice for enabling fast data applications. Then John Hugg provides the “proof in the pudding” with a step-by-step review of his Unique Devices application, which performs real-time analytics on fast moving data. It's a representative implementation of the speed layer in the Lambda Architecture with the logic captured in just 30 lines of code.
How to Build Real-Time Streaming Analytics with an In-memory, Scale-out SQL D...VoltDB
In this webinar Ryan Betts, CTO at VoltDB, explains why streaming aggregation is a key to streaming analytics. He will also address how SQL can be used in combination with streaming aggregation, and the benefits of up-to-date analytics for per-event transactions and insights. You can listen to the webinar here: http://learn.voltdb.com/WRSQLDatabase.html
First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.
Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standards. How can we improve this crucial process?
In this session we will cover:
- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools
By the end of this presentation, you'll have the knowledge on how to organize and improve your code review proces

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
