Mount St. Helens is a stratovolcano located in Washington state along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. It has experienced several major eruptions throughout history, most notably in 1980 which lasted several hours and rated a 5.1 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. These eruptions have caused widespread environmental destruction through ashfall, landslides, and lahars, in addition to social impacts like evacuations and economic costs including infrastructure damage and losses to the timber industry.
