At a young age, I have always had an interest in pictures. I used to go through every single box of
pictures in my mom and dad s closet. I would always go through them, remembering the moments

The term pop culture can be defined as The culture of the people a culture that flourishes through
social interaction and mass media that is most actively involved in by the public. Pop culture can
cover a wide range of materials and as such should be looked at as a topic open to discussion,
interpretation as to why it is popular and what makes it popular. Since pop cultureincludes an
expansive spectrum of subjects I am going to be focusing on one of those and that is Video
games. In this essay I will be exploring the ideas and theories of why I believe video games have
made a shift into mainstream pop culture.

Before I start discussing video games I would like to explore the ideas of how cultures emerge

The principals of operant conditioning, teaches how having certain coping techniques can
reward certain undesirable behaviors. Conditioning human behavior has been studied for many
years, Psychologists Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner, have dedicated the majority of their
lives to the study. Thorndike s theory Law of effect. Thorndike suggests that certain stimuli and
response become connected or dissociated from each other. His experiment worked by placing
a cat in a box, then observing its behavior as it tried to escape and obtain the food on the other
side. He studied several cats and plotted the time it took for them to escape from the puzzle box.
The challenge to get out of the box remained the same, but the amount of time to get out of the
box decreased, and while the animal may have not realized what it was doing, but knew what he

A Review of the Literature Growing up in today s society can be traumatizing for any child.
When it comes to growing up as a young girl, however, it can be downright devastating, but not
only for the child but the parent as well. There are so many decisions to be made when choosing
how to raise your child, assuring that you have instilled proper values to develop a healthy sense
of self worth and confidence. Upon reading the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from
the Frontlines of the New Girlie Girl Culture , by Peggy Orenstein, I was extremely captivated to
absorb the opinions that she had on raising a girl and all of the feminine influences that naturally
surround her. The author herself had stated right from the first page how she initially wished for
the child in her womb was a boy. My preliminary notion that joined this book to the course
material was assumed before I even began reading, as several obvious details it became apparent
that the book for sure had to be about gender roles and gender identity. The whole topic of
princesses in the title, as well as the way the books cover flaunted pink and shimmery glitter it
was just a telltale sign to have gender specific ties. That impression continued as I began reading

An Example of cognitive dissonance is that at my house, my cats can sometimes be tough to see
when you are walking, and thus people end up stepping on them or kicking them. The cognitive
dissonance here would be that people often like to say your cat walked into my path or your cat

theory often suggests that the brain wants to eliminate dissonance whenever possible. The brain

Examples Of Hyperbole In The Crucible
In 1951, Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, a play referring to the time in Massachusetts during
the Salem witch trials. The Salem Witch Trials was a time period when people were being
randomly accused of being witches by one another. The people who were accused of being
witches had to either give false confessions or were executed in terrible ways. In The Crucible,
the accused were sentenced to death by hangings, pressings, died in prison. In the play, nineteen
people were hung, about thirteen died in prison, and one died by being pressed. In the play, the
author Miller uses many examples of hyperbole and exaggeration as the characters are talking .
The author also used imagery to describe the settings in the play. In The Crucible, the author
wanted to give us a real life description of how that time period might have been. As the story
goes on, we see the craziness of the salem witch trials and how absurd it was. One literary device
that Arthur Miller showed in The Crucible was hyperbole. Throughout the play many parts are
shown where the dialogue shows examples of hyperboles. For example, this quote said by John
Proctor, Oh, Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer! (p.27). This quote by John is not to be
taken literal but at the time John and Elizabeth do not have a great relationship. This is due to
the fact that John Proctor committed adultery by falling in love with one of the local girls,

in the town. They thought that young Betty had been cursed by a witch and that she why she

The Time Machine Literary Devices
In the The Time Machine by H. G. Wells, the Time Traveller travels to the year 802,701 and finds
a divided world between a beautiful but simple race called the Eloi. He explores the world and
when he comes back to where he left his time machine, and finds that it is gone. At first, he blames
the Eloi, but he finds another race of disgusting humanoids that live underground and feast upon the
Eloicalled the Morlocks. He theorizes that the Eloi were a part of the upper class while the
Morlocks were the working class, and they split after years of separation. The Time Traveller
saves one of the Eloi named Weena from drowning and she becomes his companion, but she later
dies while the Time Traveller is fighting off the Morlocks. After fighting off the Morlocks with
fire and a mace, he gets his time machine back, and travels back home. During the Time Traveller s
journey, he experiences many emotions that Wells makes clear to the reader through the use of
tone. Hope, science, and disappointment are all common tones that Wells uses to influence the
reader s emotions at different times in the story. Wells uses the tone of hope to show that the time
traveller sympathizes with the Eloi and to motivate himself to get his time machine back. The
Time Traveller sees that even though they are not intelligent, some traits of humanity are not gone
